Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14
Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.
The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)
The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.
"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.
"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.
"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.
When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.
To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it
The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.

Product Description
Gordon Titcomb's new album: THE LAST TRAIN is a CD that that will appeal to the discriminating ear of both Folk Music and Bluegrass Music fans alike. The supporting musicians on this record are some of the most well known in the World: Arlo Guthrie, Mike Auldridge, Bill Keith... all major artists in their own right. The 10 original songs on this CD were written while Gordon was out on tour with Arlo ( Gordon's been a member of Arlo's band for several years) From the soulful, introspective ballad: " If It Were Up To Me' ,encompassing such truth and depth that any listener will feel though Gordon had penned the song for them alone, to the "high octane",Bluegrass powerhouse: "Gold Plated Love. this CD is one of those rare, "no artificial ingredients, no fillers" albums that you can listen to over and over again. This is an album that takes you on a journey that is filled with life, love and laughter.Customer Reviews:
Gordon sings and picks with sincerity and subtlety so his tuneful stories and messages are easily remembered .......2005-10-25
Best known for his work on mandolin and pedal steel, Titcomb is also a solid guitar, dobro and banjo player. Fine examples of his picking pyrotechnics are found in the banjo breaks on "Gold Plated Love" and "Snake River." Gordon's high-octane mandolin break on "Snicker Doodle" would easily bring up prices at the pump. I was impressed with Gordon's all star musical guest list for the album: Arlo Guthrie, Mike Auldridge, Bill Keith, Mark Schatz, Frank Solivan II, Mike Munford, Jon Caroll, Stefan Custodi, Dede Wyland, Kip Martin, John Previti, John Miller and Antoine Silverman. It must've been a blast to see his large body of originals come to life in the hands of these artists. "Snicker Doodle" and "Snake River Hoedown" are instrumentals that require some nimble fingers from these masters. While not a defining voice of the time, Titcomb's baritone voice is pleasant. The strongest cuts incorporate Solivan's and Wyland's harmonies, and one nostalgic number with trio ("Take Me Back") is a yearning for eternal youthfulness that most of us can relate to. Presented in ¾-time, "The River" shows a deep appreciation and connection to nature and our environment.
By age 17, Gordon had left high school and was playing with Mike Williams, opening shows for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Over the years, he's played with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, Patrick Sky, John Herald Band, Woodstock Mountain Review, Happy and Artie Traum, Bill Keith , Jim Rooney, Rory Block, Eric Andersen, Kinky Friedman, Barry and Holly Tashian, Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Colvin, and now Arlo. Titcomb's also recorded in more than 2000 sessions. For the last 30 years, Titcomb's made his living recording and playing as a sideman. I'm sure that it was strange, albeit very rewarding, to show up for recording sessions and have to assume the leading role of callling the shots on what songs to record, how to arrange them, and who to feature for solos.
Based on his music, Titcomb seems like an amiable and genuine person. He's straightforward and easy to understand. That's primarily why I like his songs. Some come across as more meaningful and effective than others, but they're without gimmicks. Gordon sings and picks them with sincerity and subtlety so his tuneful stories and messages are easily remembered. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
