5 out of 5 stars Mary Wells CD Review.......2006-03-15

Mary Wells Motown songs are hard to find. I was pleased to find it here and pleased with the CD itself.

4 out of 5 stars A solid basic Mary Wells hit collection of soul songs.......2005-03-21

In 1964, the year the Beatles led the British Invasion Mary Wells was Motown's biggest star and had a #1 hit with the classic "My Guy." That would end up changing, not because of the Beatles, but because of Diana Ross and the Supremes, who would have three #1 hits at the end of the year and become the second biggest hit makers on the planet. Then there was Wells' decision to leave Motown for 20th Century Fox, after which her career was nowhere near the same. Given she was only 21 when "My Guy" hit the top of the charts, this "20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" for Mary Wells cannot help but engender thoughts of what might have been.

Mary Wells became a star when Barry Gordy signed her as a teenager and she had her first Motown hit, "Bye Bye Baby" (#45 on the Billboard Pop charts, although most of her songs always charted better on the R&B charts). This collection includes three other Top 10 hits, all of which were written and produced by Smokey Robinson: "The One Who Really Loves You" (#8), "You Beat Me to the Punch" (#9), and "Two Lovers" (#7). In fact, Robinson wrote the first seven tracks on this album, which includes "Laughing Boy" (#15). "I Don't Want to Take a Chance" (#33), "Once Upon a Time" (#19) and "You Lost the Sweetest Boy" (#22) are also pretty good.

With her soft voice, Mary Wells was a soul singer who could sound both shy and sexy at the same time. However, with only eleven tracks this is a less than satisfying collection, because it is missing some hits, such as "What's the Matter With You Baby" (#17). The 2-disc set "Looking Back 1961-1964," put out by Motown, would be the much better choice for her fans. However, for the casual fan who would like to have more than "My Guy," this "Millennium Collection" certainly fulfills the minimum Mary Wells requirement.

5 out of 5 stars 20TH CENTURY MASTER = MARY WELLS.......2004-02-25

This soulful legendary lady was Motown's 1st Superstar who had hit after hit and this wonderful collection shows clearly why Mary Wells should be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!! Mary wrote her first hit the raw and gritty "Bye Bye Baby" which launched a career that built Motown in the early days and was quickly followed by classics such as "Two Lovers" and "The One Who Really Loves You". Mary continued turning out lots of hits and the variety of these were really amazing!!! From her sultry numbers to soulful rhythm cookers such as "You Lost The Sweetest Boy" and "What's Easy For Two Is So Hard For One", Mary Wells was a major hit maker who continued with this quality all the way through the eighties with her last major label release on Epic Records "In And Out OF Love" still timeless in its beauty and deserving to be released on CD!! Though for some strange reason radio seemed to refuse to play Mary's records after leaving Motown Records, "Gigolo" was a major dance hit from her last release and still sounds great today!!! The mega-hit "My Guy" sounds timeless today in all its glory here and could be a hit all over again today. Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells duet hit "Once Upon A Time" is another song of great beauty and this solid sampler shows that Mary Wells was a once in a lifetime classic whose talent still shines bright today. The music industry needs to give this lady her just due...it's overdue!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not quite 5 stars..........2001-07-04

This compact compilation comes so very close to being a 5-star collection in spite of its meager 11 tracks. The inclusion of just one more tune, Wells' duet with Marvin Gaye "What's The Matter With You Baby" would have put it over the top and made this a top-notch, no-filler CD. The omission of this top-20 song is all the more frustrating considering that it's B-side, "Once Upon A Time" rightfully appears here. That point aside, this is an all-hits collection of Mary Wells' Motown sides. Once Wells was teamed up with Smokey Robinson, their combined output catapulted Motown into the spotlight. Robinson's incredible talent with lyrics and production and Well's maturing style culminated in the all-time classic chart-topper "My Guy". While the Robinson-Wells combo produced some outstanding tunes, Wells was also able to handle the up-and-coming powerhouse writing talents of Holland-Dozier-Holland as evident in the pounding "You Lost The Sweetest Boy". While it is doubtful Wells could have ever surpassed the supreme accomplishment of "My Guy", with Robinson and the Holland-Dozier-Holland team behind her, there is no telling the heights she could have reached had she not bolted Motown at the apex of her output. But that was not to be and this collection does provide the cream of the Wells Motown crop. Sound quality is reasonably good exhibiting the sometimes typically muddy sound of Motown recordings with some tracks noticeably hissy. All cuts here except 9 are the stereo versions. Includes 8-page flopover liner notes booklet with a brief musical biography. For the hits-only purchaser, the best of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars SULTRY & SOPHISICATED VOCALS~BRAVO MARY!.......2005-05-18

Opening with cool finger-snapping accented by a bad bass tag, "Ain't It The Truth" is a smoldering and very sophisicated soulful classic that should have been a huge #1 hit and would have been if it weren't for the radio ban that is said to have been put on Mary Wells post-Motown work...this was really a crime as this smooth hypnotic classic clearly shows...engrossing songs continue on this wonderful multi-label Essential Mary Wells Collection from the 20th Century Fox debut album that should have been a huge success as the quality was there and I personally wore out several vinyl copies of this overlooked classic and at the time everyone that I knew loved all of the great songs on this superb release as none of them are filler! Minimal airplay was given to numerous great single releases from this solid 20th Century Fox debut and these easily surpassed Mary's great Motown output for their high quality production values plus wonderfully imaginative arrangements yet mainly for Mary's deeply soulful magnificent vocals which were at a wonderous new peak...listen to the beautifully haunting and lushly romantic classic "Never, Never Leave Me" and the very catchy and rhythmic "He's A Lover" and while these great songs were top-twenty R&B hits it is clear that they should have been huge chart-topping hits on the pop charts as well as Mary has never sounded finer. Mary Wells wonderful 20th Century Fox output still holds up today as the best from the great musical sixties as each and every incredible song is infused with great passionate vocals that go deep inside of the brilliantly diverse set of romantic songs that are filled with wonderfully inspired performances by alot of great musicians..."The Doctor" shows Mary in a new funkier groove on her Jubilee Records releases which are all her own original compositions that are a completely stunning collection of richly varied classics that would have been mega-hits with any exposure at all. Closing this essential collection for anyone who loves great once-in-a-lifetime singers are two great songs from the 1981 Epic album "In And Out Of Love" which sadly has yet to be released on compact-disc and is one of Mary's greatest ever...this major work is another that should have been a huge hit but again Mary received no support from radio and while "Gigolo" which is over five minutes of soulful bliss was a big dance club hit it was not enough to make this great "In A Out Of Love" album the success that it deserved to be given that it is a totally awesome collection of richly varied songs with Mary in peak vocal form giving the greatest performances of her brilliant career which spanned thirty years. "These Arms" closes this superb collection with Mary in a lush grandly orchestrated setting that beautifully showcases her magnificent vocal for us to be able to savor and enjoy over and over...this is a very moving and stunning collection and get it fast while it is available as this kind of greatness will never happen again!!! Thank you Mary Wells for sharing your great talent and gorgeous voice for so many years...they were sublime and you are missed!

5 out of 5 stars 20th Century Fox, Jubilee and Epic Winner!!.......2004-11-22

In addition to her Motown compilations, there are several excellent individual CD compilations that cover her work on 20th Century Fox Records (on the Ichiban label), Atco Records (also on the Ichiban label) and Jubilee (on the Sequel Records label).

For those wishing to discover what Mary's work was like after she left Motown, and yet not ready to invest in the individual label compilations mentioned above, this is a condensed version of some of her best work for 20th Century Fox (6 songs), Jubilee (7 songs) and Epic Records (2 songs); none of her Atco work is included on this CD.

Her work for 20th Century Fox utilized her vocal styling that had become her trademark at Motown (soft and sexy), even doing one song co-written by old Motown label mate, Barrett Strong, "Stop Taking Me For Granted"; the songs are well done and enjoyable, using producers like Carl Davis, but the only song from her stay at 20th to make a dent in the Top 40 was "Use Your Head"; a couple managed to do pretty well on the R & B charts.

For the Jubilee label, Mary went into a more creative and grittier vein; all of the songs here were written and/or produced by Mary and her husband, Cecil Womack (brother of Bobby Womack, for those of you not familiar with him). When Mary first began with Motown she was definitely more R & B than soft and silky and the songs here are all in a heavy R & B vein. The songs are also more personal, reflecting a more worldly, knowing Mary. Though none of the songs hit the Top 40 charts, several such as "The Doctor" managed to do quite well on the R & B charts.

Of her work for Epic, one song managed to become a dance-floor hit ("Gigolo") and her work for that label tried to re-establish her more in line with the style she had become famous for during her Motown days. Hopefully, one day, there will be additional material released from the Epic Records vaults; her only album release for that label, "In And Out Of Love", was actually very well done and showed a lot of promise of things to come; too bad there was no follow-up LP.

A couple of songs that she did for Warner Bros./Reprise have shown up on some soul compilations, but hopefully there is enough material in the Reprise vaults to warrant a complete compilation of her work for that label, one day.

If you haven't heard any of her work on Jubilee and/or 20th Century Fox, you'll be very pleased with this CD and perhaps be inspired to purchase the complete Jubilee and 20th Century Fox compilations mentioned earlier. You will find, like so many of us have discovered, that Mary's career definitely did not end with Motown. She proved that she was willing to try different styles and grow as an artist and this made her a "success" in spite of not having any more "hit" records.

I've enjoyed Mary Wells for years, but nostalgia buffs should beware. These are all remakes, and not terribly interesting ones, lite-jazz, bouncy-pop backings. MW's voice is still delightful, but buyers should shop around (excuse me Smokey Robinson) if they are only going to buy one of her albums.

5 out of 5 stars UNDISCOVERED SOULFUL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO MARY!!!.......2005-05-05

How this great masterpiece slipped through the cracks is beyond me...a classic production with Mary Wells at her soulful and sultry peak! Motorcity Records produced great classic 60's Motown acts with apparently no promotion or no support from radio and this is sad as these were great moments in music that should have been heard...Kim, Mary, Supremes, etc. in sublime settings! Many Motown artists have continued to do classic work after Motown but without support from radio...radio seldom appreciates real talent like it did back in the great muscial sixties when it had a much broader approach.
Mary Wells built Motown but did the unforgivable and left the label and was black-balled from the airwaves which was a too big of a price to pay...Mary continued to turn out classics after Motown but nobody would play her...this was strange and sad as she built Motown in the early days...the first Motown Female Superstar who was like a black exotic Peggy Lee who continued to do great and awesome things long after Motown...this is proof!!!! Listen to this superb collection that was recorded late in Mary Wells all too short life and witness a Superstar who was still at an incredible peak. This is a collection of classics that is a must for all who love great Diva's who are at the top of their game...Ms. Wells always was and this collection is a MUST HAVE!!! The original release "Keeping My Mind On Love" has a few second market copies available and if you love the classic legendary soul singers do not miss this one and grab it fast!!! Bravo MS. MARY WELLS for being one of the finest ever...you were the ultimate and we miss you!!! God bless Mary Wells

5 out of 5 stars The "Adult" Mary Wells keeping up with the times, super!.......1999-10-28

This collection is a must for every Mary Wells fan. It distinctly separates the "teenage" Mary Wells, whom I truly love from the "adult" Mary Wells who has and will always on my heart. Now, I am waiting for someone to do her life story in a MOVIE. Anyone listening? I would like to see her daughter(s) follow in her foot steps. Where are they? Also, TV footage and videos of Mary's performances would be a GOLDMINE if someone would put a collection together. I would be thrilled to volunteer my time to help. I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Mary, one of the highlights of my life. I cannot get enough of her.

3 out of 5 stars Mary Wells' very last recordings.......1999-09-05

British producer Ian Levine signed Mary Wells to his Motorcity label as one of the first in 1987, and the material on this album was recorded in the period 1987-90. Mary Wells would never record again. She died from throat cancer 1992. This re-issue opens with a remake of "My Guy" which is uptempo and fresh and in fact the best of the re-recordings as f.ex. the duet with Frankie Gaye (Marvin's brother) "Once Upon A Time" is very cheapsounding and not standing the test of time. The original material varies somewhat in quality too - "Walk The City Streets" is far too racy to do her much justice, "You're The Answer To My Dreams" is a much better dance track as is "Stop Before It's Too Late". The slower "Hold On A Little Longer" and the title track of the original 1990 album "Keeping My Mind On Love" is sultry and delightful. All in all, it's worth a buy and on this collection you'll find all the 12" versions included. (Søren Jensen)

        1 out of 5 stars Oh No...........2007-06-23

I did not find most of these songs that great. Either the CD recordings were bad, or the songs were never that good to begin with. One song makes the singer sound too much like someone who can never be faithful to just one person.

        1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2007-06-15

this cd was not by the original artist but a copy of her hits I was extremelly dissapointed as it was not advertised as such

        1 out of 5 stars This was a dissapointment........2005-10-23

The only thing that I found on the album that was by Mary Wells is the photo on the CD cover. All songs were re-makes and dissapointing. I would not buy this CD again even if it was listed for $.01. It's not worth the shipping cost.

        1 out of 5 stars Not Motown.......2004-09-09

These are not the original Motown recordings and were not produced by Smokey Robinson, Berry Gordy or anybody at Motown. They are not merely re-recordings but complete re-arrangements using discofied styles and synthesisers which were simply not around in the early 1960s, and probably date from the late 1970s or 1980s.
Buy a true Mary Wells Motown compilation instead for a just tribute to a late, great artist

1 out of 5 stars Skip this one.......2003-11-15

This cd was a real disappointment, as the songs are not the original versions. Yeah, I believe that Mary Wells is singing them, but they aren't the versions we've come to love. They sound slick and new. No thanks.
