4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-08

I'm one of those The Sound of Music addicted, having lost the track of how many times I've seen it whatever the format is. Therefore, it was basically for curiosity that I've bought this CD. It's a fine recording that takes you to a typical, cosy family reunion. The male voices are not impressive and I wouldn't include the flute solos in the CD. But the final result is very pleasant, excellent to listen in the car while you're driving in the countryside (before lunch, of course).

5 out of 5 stars The original sound of their music. .......2006-01-15

The original von Trapp Family's twenty years of touring and performing internationally had finished, and Maria Augusta von Trapp had written their story in three books and begun several decades of missionary work in New Guinea by the time "The Sound of Music" hit Broadway, and Julie Andrews later sang about her favorite things in a top-earning film. I don't know if the original von Trapp Family benefitted from show and film royalties; they certainly deserved to, for they worked very hard perfecting, under their conductor Dr Franz Wasner, their natural ensemble and music-making talents.

The results may be heard in this first-class CD reissue of recordings they made in New York in 1952 and 1956. The family amassed a large repertoire, collecting items while touring, for example "Waltzing Mathilda" from Australia. The selection here includes a cross-section (loosely titled "Folk Songs") and some of their instrumental items involving recorders, cello and harpsichord. Perhaps the items from their rich Austrian culture are the most satisfying.

This is the second DGG CD release of their recordings. Duration 52 minutes. I recall from my LP collecting days, that there are enough Trapp Family recordings to fill a third CD. I look forward to it.

4 out of 5 stars Like being there live!.......2001-07-17

This is a wonderful compilation of live songs performed by Dan Fogelberg with various band members during the 90's. I had to the good fortune to see three of his shows during that time and always made a list of the songs played each night. Afterwards I would create a cassette of the songs available to re-live the concert. This record includes some previously unreleased material and it puts me right back into one of those seats again.

Dan's incredible versatility and power as a peformer is showcased here. In addition, his breadth as a musician is demonstrated again & again. Songs like "The Innocent Age" and "Make Love Stay" are unmatched in lyric and melodic composition. And then the power and raw emotion of "Don't Let That Sun Go Down" is indicative of a side of Dan's music of which the Top 40 listener is unaware. And then his tip of the hat to the Beatles in "Here Comes The Sun" reminds us of why we all were influenced by their sound.

For anyone who wants to experience Dan Fogelberg in Concert and glimpse the variety of his talent and his ability to reach out and hold an audience, then this album will put you right there! A definite 'Recommended Buy'

3 out of 5 stars nice for fans.......2000-10-24

Not a bad cd. Though I heard this was recorded in the early to mid 90's, I do not recall hearing many of these songs performed live. Dan's setlist does not change much period, so many of these must have been one offs. The inclusion of 'Changing horses' makes it worth the price alone.'Looking for a lady' and 'as the raven flies' only sweeten the offer. A few other surprises are when Timothy B. Schmidt joins the fun for old Poco nugget 'You better think twice.' And a "where did that come from" reading of 'Statesboro blues.' Mr. Harrisons 'Here comes the sun' ends the acoustic set nicely. I probably would have rated this higher if it weren't for the inclusion of a few tunes that need not be here.

I am assuming Dan knew this would be largely a "fans only" disc thus I do not see a valid reason for the inclusion of 'Make love stay' and 'Hard to say' which make their umpteenth appearance here. They could have, should have, been left off.

I would reccomend any of Dan's 70's catalog first. But if you are already a fan then this should do nothing to change that. One other thing is that this album is on a tiny record label (Chicago records) so it may be wise to pick this one up before it dissapears!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Live CD.......2000-07-18

Thanks Dan for all the great music over the years...this CD beats "Greetings From The West" for dollar-for-dollar-pound-for-pound showcasing Dan's music and especially wide-ranging talent. If you only think of Fogelberg as a "soft folk-rock balladeer" this CD will certainly change your mind.

5 out of 5 stars A real pleasure.......2000-06-27

This is the Dan Fogelberg CD you can put on when your friends are around! You needn't be embarrassed.

This album shows how Dan's career really does add up to something. Those old songs sound better than ever with a bit of grit in the throat, and the new song and blues covers are a treat. Playing with a live band seems to work magic too; Dan sounds to be having FUN, and that makes all the difference. So what if the recordings were made years ago?

This is well worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars A Truely Intense Experience.......2000-06-21

What a shame that this truely brilliant live album has only been released on a small label and will probably not receive the attention it deserves.

Dan Fogelberg - a brilliant singer, songwriter and instrumentalist who has survived in this business for almost 30 years now - released his first live album in 1991 (Greetings From the West), also highly recommended. But this new album, which is a collection of material recorded live between 1992 and 1995, sounds much closer to real thing.

No overdubs, the occasional glitch - it's really like being there in the concert hall. Unlike other reviewers I do think that Dan's voice has matured nicely over the years, and the live versions of his early classics sound even better on this disc.

Timothy B. Schmit, veteran member of Poco and The Eagles, provides some very nice harmony vocals on this record. There are a lot of as yet unreleased songs here, including some very intense and highly emotional Blues tracks as well - which all helps to prove just what a brilliant singer and musician Dan Fogelberg is.

This is certainly gift to his devoted fans but it should also extend beyond that loyal core of people. Beautiful, handmade music is a timeless treasure, and nobody does it better than Dan Fogelberg.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

I originally purchased this album in the 60's as an L.P. (vinyl to you youngters) then as a musicassette in the 70's. I've been waiting forever for it to be released in C.D.. Catherine has one of the sweetest voices ever, on par with today's Sarah Brightman, and the selection of these songs matches her talents perfectly. On this C.D. is her definitive version of "The Nova-Scotia Song" (Why do you think they call her the "Nova Scotia Girl"- She's from New Brunswick.) For an album recorded 40 years ago, it sounds superb on my 5.1 system.

        Album Description

Tubist, David Zerkel put a great deal of thought toward the selected works for the unique contribution each work held independently as well as collectively for this recording. The selected literature is by American composers and was originally written for the tuba. He also opted to include literature that was composed with the CC or BB-flat tubas in mind. We hope you will enjoy this recording.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is my Professor's CD.......2005-02-11

I studied with David Zerkel while I was an undergraduate at the University of Georgia, and I can say that he is a fantastic musician and human being. He is a great mentor and role model for his students and, during my 4 (...ok...5) years, I learned so much from him. It's great that he decided to record two pieces of standard repertoire for the tuba (Persichetti Serenade XII, and Hartley Sonata No. 1) that were previously unavailable on a digital format. He has done the tuba community (Yes...there is such a thing, believe it or not!) a huge favor. The more recent pieces (Cheetham, Woodward, and Gillingham) are in a more neo-romantic style and can be appreciated by listeners of any almost any background. Zerkel's sound is smooth and warm and, as you can hear on the CD, the musical line is always the most important aspect of any of his performances. Even if you don't play the tuba, you should get this CD. You won't regret it!

          Album Description

The Olympics only Mirwood album, featuring "Something Old" - six remakes of their earlier rock'n'roll and R&B classics, and "Something New" comprising six modern (for 1966) soul stompers in the Motown style.

The remakes retain all the energy and spirit of the originals - as well they might, having been produced by the same team who were responsible for their first versions. The soul cuts maintain the same level of excitement. Many were among the first big records in the early days of the Northern Soul scene, where the Mirwood label continues to be held in the highest regard.

This is not a `former members of the Olympics sing their hits and some other stuff' album - the personnel of the group on this set is almost identical to that featured on their original late-50s hits, with just one member missing - he had died in 1965.

Never previously available as a stand-alone CD, this latest entry in Ace's mid-priced Hip Pocket series in a cardboard replica of the LP is sure to appeal to R&B and classic soul fans alike.
