Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim. The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin
Album Description
Exclusive UK version of Bocelli's third pop release includes the exclusive bonus track 'Tornera La Neve' and CD-ROM. The album also features 'L'Incontro' a duet with Gerard Depardieu. David Foster co-composes some of the tracks on this album as well. 2001.Customer Reviews:

Emotional therapy!.......2007-05-14
This album helped me process a lot of emotional residue affiliated with the strain of difficult dynamics between my mom and myself.
Don't get me wrong. The music isn't sad; it's pure heart and emotion, so it may evoke emotions. The last cut, "L'Ultimo Re" is gorgeous with the way his voice soars!

whoa! September rules!.......2007-06-10
the CD has about 10 songs on it---all good. the cd also has two videos on it, 'Satellites' and 'Looking for Love'. for the life of me, i can't figure out how to view them. i've tried every multimedia player known to man and none of them will work. it's frustrating to the max---you'd think they would've put these two multimedia files in a format Windows Media Player could recognize.
oh well. other than not being able to play the videos, the CD is awesome.
One of Sweden's best new imports........2007-01-09
This album has the disctinctive Swedish pop sound which I looove. At the same time she has a disco sound going on. The well produced beats and instrumentation provide great foil to Petra's powerful vocals. It's refreshing for a female singer to have a strong voice in dance music.
"Satellites" the obvious hit off the album is dance-pop perfection. Think A* Teens meets old-school Britney Spears but with stronger vocals. It is the strongest and might be the best track on the album but each track is a winner. Some tracks are growers but giving them time their greatness will sink in.
"Looking for Love" has a blatant disco sound but it's much better than the crap that permeates our ears and brains. The general American public has really bad taste in music. In Europe, namely Scandinavia. They know good music and know how to make it. I am thankful to have discovered this artist.
"Flowers on the Grave" is an above standard pop ballad. It's much better than what we are subject to day in and day out by American pop culture.
Other standout tracks include, "It Doesn't Matter", "Good Times" and "Midnight Tonight" It's nothing groundbreaking or necessarily new but it's not good. It's great.
the other side..........2006-12-13
I will try to never listen to this cd again. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because the production value is above average.
I can see why young girls like this. I may give it to my niece.
My new FAVORITE cd!!! .......2006-08-11
This CD has it all! Well produced, great lyrics, and fantastic voice!
Stellar dance pop.......2006-04-19
This album is really hard to dislike. It doesn't have the obnoxious, repetetive, neverending beats like Cascada, or the whiny voice of Edmee' in DHT. The beats and melodies are all blended rather well, and the singer's voice is strong and very very easy to enjoy. At no point in this album does September take themselves too seriously, and that is HUGELY important in any genre, but definitely in dance.
"Satellites", the song everyone should know, is more electro than anything else, but I could see where people would get disco and house from. It's very poppy, and a wonderful song. "Flowers on the Grave" is one of the slower songs, still beautiful, still a great listen. "It Doesn't Matter" is more of a disco song, featuring some guitars thrown in with the "shake your ass like you just don't care" dance beats.
A previous reviewer said that "Midnight Heartache" sounded familiar. This is because the song features a "Bette Davis Eyes" sample as the musical background. Also, Mylo used the same sample for his "In Your Arms" song. September treats the music as a canvas, and they paint quite a song overtop of it. "Midnight Heartache" is one of my favorites. "Sacrifice" is your typical dance-pop fare, but again those vocals are amazing and they drag you by the ear drum.
All in all, I highly recommend this to anyone with an ear for gorgeous female vocals, or for a penchant to dance. This will not disappoint.

Amazon.com essential recording
From the evocative cover painting to the impeccably chosen songs within, this 1965 album harkens back to Sinatra's great Capitol-era concept albums like In the Wee Small Hours and Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely. The theme revolves around a man approaching his 50s, looking back with a mixture of nostalgia, regret, and uncertainty; given Sinatra's age at the time (he was 49 when this was recorded) and the way he invests himself in the material, it's impossible to interpret the record as anything but autobiographical. Wistful numbers such as "Don't Wait Too Long," "It Was a Very Good Year," "September Song," and the title track all hit the emotional bull's-eye, but everything here is excellent. Unquestionably his finest Reprise-era achievement. --Dan EpsteinCustomer Reviews:
Words aren't enough praise for this one.......2007-05-09
This is one amazing, fascinating and incredible disc--for a man in or nearing the September of his years it is especially so.
Today I had occasion to think of this disc fondly as I was checking out some groceries at the market. There, at the register was a very beautiful young lady and briefly my mind wandered away to enjoy her stunnning face and sweet demeanor. Seconds later, reality took hold and I at once thought of this Sinatra disc.
All of these incredibly heartfelt songs touch on the fondest memories of a man's life in such a great way. It's hard to explain but these songs leave you in such a beautiful state of appreciation and indeed acceptance of your lot in life, even if life has not turned out completely to your liking.
If you like Frank, just buy this and listen. What more can I say. Words just don't do it justice. To me, it's so much more than just an album.
You'll find yourself smiling at beauty of all sorts with great ease.
Just don't try to explain your completely wholesome smile to the 22-year-old checker girl at the market. She won't get it.
September of my Years - Sinatra.......2007-01-12
For any man with a past........2006-08-16
It isn't just for the ones who heard it in 1965.......2006-01-10
When I began listening to Frank Sinatra at the age of 11(I'm 14, now), I obviously wasn't exactly ready for the ultra-melancholy despair of ''None But the Lonely Heart.'' My taste was more in the general category of ''Life's a Trippy Thing''(which includes ''Hello birdies, hello spring," in its lyrics), ''High Hopes,"and ''You're Awful" from ''On the Town''. But now I know very well that the true essence of Sinatra isn't ''Witchcraft'' and ''Learnin' the Blues,'' and that if that was the only type of material he was capable of singing he would now be known in history as the guy just a notch above Perry Como and Dean Martin. Some singers are out there to sing about accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative, but Sinatra....was not.
''It Was a Very Good Year'' ranks along with ''I'm a Fool to Want You'' and ''The End of a Love Affair'' as one of the most autobiographical songs of his career. It is four minutes and twenty-eight seconds of Frank Sinatra's life. THAT is what made Frank Sinatra different from any other singer. If what he sings about in his recordings did not at some time in some way happen to him, he was definitely the greatest actor in American music history. The ironic amusement in ''The Man in the Looking Glass,'' the aching remembrances of a love lost in ''Hello Young Lovers.'' And always an air of a sad, but not despairing, wistful look at life.
Apart from the emotional aspect, his voice is magnificent on this album. An interesting thing about Sinatra is that if you do not know the song he is singing, you can still track it down to the exact year by his voice. The texture of his voice-the quality that makes him never boring- is in ''September of My Years'' an essential part of the very atmosphere of the album; worn from hard living, drinking, and smoking, in itself a constant reminder that the man singing about ''Once Upon A Time,'' has had a million once upon a times to mark him forever.
The days of wine and roses and the days of Frank Sinatra are gone forever, but, in a way, they can never truly be gone. There will always be the memories of what they meant and mean to all of us, young or old- those songs of heartbreak and love and loneliness and the eternal Wee Small Hours of the Morning. And there will always be the moments when someone, somewhere, will hear the words,''When I was seventeen, it was a very good year...''

Album Description
As the eight-piece Brooklyn collective Hem releases their second full-length album, Eveningland, their reputation precedes them as one of the most distinctive and emotionally rewarding bands in American music. Hem's homespun blend of vintage Americana, country/folk and chamber music made its 2002 independently released debut Rabbit Songs a critical success, inviting musical and lyrical comparisons to everyone from Dusty Springfield to Randy Newman to Aaron Copland. On Eveningland, recorded during their brief tenure with the ill-fated Dreamworks label, the band shows how deeply they've matured as musicians and songwriters. Eveningland, produced by Messé and guitarist Gary Maurer, updates the rustic charm of Rabbit Songs as references to bygone folk tunes give way to sonic touchstones from another classic era. "These songs have more of a relationship to the `60s and early `70s. We're all in love with that Countrypolitan sound," Messé says reverently referring to! classics like Ray Charles' Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, and albums by Glen Campbell and even the Carpenters. Produced by Gary Maurer and Dan Messe.Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Exquisite!.......2007-06-19
I pre-ordered their album "Home Again, Home Again" specifically for the song "The Part Where You Let Go!" In the mean time; I also ordered their latest album; Funnel Cloud. It is an outstanding album, but; on reading the reviews for Hem, I decided to purchase Eveningland, and; am I ever glad I did! I like it best between the two. Anyway; treat yourself to some outstanding relaxing vocals and harmony, coupled with music that will lift you up!

Enchanting.......2007-01-13
From the delicately assembled "Fire Thief" to the more powerful "Strays" and "Redwing" to the haunting "Pacific Street" and the stirring "Eveningland", this album contains an array of emotions unmatched by many others, all conveyed in a beautifully understated, natural manner - no obvious synthesizers (perhaps none at all), no digital nonsense, no wannabe pop diva belting out lyrics. Only beautiful, soothing music that comes from the artists' hearts and invariably finds its way to the listener's heart as well.
I can't think of a better album to listen to while sipping hot chocolate and watching the snow fall.
Thank you to the people who do advertising at Liberty Mutual for exposing me to this band.

Jack Johnson is one talented man. When he's not surfing or recording laid-back, rootsy rock jams like those on his debut, Brushfire Fairytales, he's filming award-winning movies about surfing like the September Sessions. Oh, and naturally, he has a hand in its soundtrack, an eclectic and relaxing array of jam-band improvisation, bluesy licks, and jazz-flecked rhythms. Johnson's solo contributions, including a cover of Jimmy Buffett's "Pirate Looks at 40," are stripped-down acoustic numbers with as much understated grace as Jeff Buckley. Other artists opt for more adornment, like Ozomatli's percussive reggae/hip-hip fusion, the Bollywood funk horn rave-up "Ganges a Go-Go," and the hands-down highlight, Greyboy and Karl Denson collaborating on a hypnotic bite of modern jazz driven by funky, spring-fresh flute loops. Sublime may have been the forbearer of breezy oceanside atmosphere, but this fantastic soundtrack takes laissez faire vibes to new levels--and emerges as yet another building block in the foundation of Jack Johnson's rapidly emerging chill-out empire. --Annie ZaleskiCustomer Reviews:

some brilliant renditions, but can't quite all mix together.......2006-10-19
In all, there are some brilliant interpretations of Weill here. I am a fan of Cave's "Mack the Knife" and David Johansen's "Alabama Song," and how can someone NOT like Lotte Lenya herself on "Pirate Jenny" and the drolling of the immortal William S. Burroughs talking through "What Keeps Mankind Alive?"
But other tracks feel to be just too short of brilliance. I love that Lou Reed tries to turn "September Song" into a kind of rock ballad, almost a VU "It Was a Pretty Good Year," but the rendition seems a little short of energy and falls flat after a while. Elvis Costello, though magnificent as an overall artist, just doesn't bring new life to "Lost in the Stars."
Perhaps the problem in the end that the choices were a little too much of the Top 40 Weill (if there really can be such a term). These are songs that have for a long time been regarded as the best of Weill, and it might have furthered the purpose of his music to find new gems and bring them into the sunlight.
