After his departure from the Temptations, Eddie Kendricks made some key records in the transition from the smooth soul of the early '70s into disco. This disc presents kickin' long versions of the essential "Keep on Truckin'," "Boogie Down," and "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" ("I'm for women's rights, I just want equal nights"), with Kendricks's voice floating confidently over funky tracks. A few other songs here don't measure up, but those three songs assure the post-Tempts Kendricks of his place in history, and tracks like "Goin' Up in Smoke" are fine period music. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Keep on Truckin': The Motown Solo Albums, Vol. 1

Product Description
As Motown groups such as The Temptations and The Supremes moved into the Seventies, their lineups proved to be fluid, and members left to establish solo careers. Three years after David Ruffin was gone from the Temptations lineup, co-lead singer Eddie Kendricks followed him into a solo career. His departure was certainly less acrimonious than Ruffins had been, as evidenced by the fact that all the Tempts gave warm testimonials on the sleeve of All By Myself, his solo debut. Keep On Truckin: The Motown Solo Collection, Vol. 1 collects four of Kendricks early albums All By Myself, People... Hold On, Eddie Kendricks, and For You produced by Frank Wilson. All of them feature both Eddies classic high tenor and his natural voice in beautifully sympathetic settings. Its part of a plan to see all of Kendricks catalogue reissued; these albums were digitally remastered in 2005 from the original master tapes to bring out every last measure of soul goodness. Incredibly, only People... Hold On was ever issued on CD a disc that has long been out of print. This set contains not only Kendricks pop- and R&B chart-topping Keep On Truckin, but also his No.1 R&B smash Shoeshine Boy and the influential dance cuts Date With The Rain and Girl You Need A Change Of Mind. Other treats hidden in the middle grooves of these records are some unexpected surprises, such as covers of Breads classic If, and Jim Croces Time In A Bottle. Less unusual, perhaps, but beautifully rendered, is his cover of Chuck Jacksons Any Day Now. Like his former Tempts partner David Ruffin, Kendricks exited the scene far too early, dying of cancer in October 1992 at the age of 52. Fortunately, he left behind a rich legacy of recordings. As liner note writer Brian Chin observes, In these four albums, a great artist, surrounded by other great artists, is called again to greatness, and responds like a champion.Customer Reviews:
R.I.P. Eddie...Thanks for the great memories!!.......2006-08-29
ALL BY MYSELF, released in April 1971 (#6 R&B, #80 Pop) was Eddie's first solo album after leaving the Temptations. LET'S GO BACK TO DAY ONE is a funky opening with Eddie's vocal multi-layered ala Marvin Gaye! THIS USED TO BE THE HOME OF JOHNNIE MAE was the B-side of IT'S SO HARD FOR ME TO SAY GOODBYE (#37 R&B, #88 Pop) and I DID IT ALL FOR YOU, a popular Quiet Storm tune, was the B-side to CAN I (#37 R&B, #101 Pop), another popular Quiet Storm staple also performed by Brenda Holloway and most recently covered by Phil Perry. SOMETHING'S BURNING starts off slow and ends with a funky ending and the Jimmy Webb composition, DIDN'T WE close this set! What's wonderful is that the Temptations' notes to Eddie originally printed on the back of the album are reprinted for this release!
PEOPLE...HOLD ON, with its eye-catching photography by Weldon A. McDougal III, was originally released in May 1972, which fared better on the charts (#13 R&B, #131 Pop). According to the liner notes, Frank Wilson said in an interview for Eddie's ULTIMATE COLLECTION (1998) that it was a concept album dedicated to black America. It opens with IF YOU LET ME (#17 R&B, #66 Pop), originally performed by Jimmy Ruffin. LET ME RUN INTO YOUR LONELY HEART is the funky B-side to EDDIE'S LOVE (#35 R&B, #77 Pop) while on DAY BY DAY, Eddie's vocals are once again multi-layered. GIRL YOU NEED A CHANGE OF MIND is the biggest hit off here (#13 R&B, #87 Pop) with its innovative use of multi-drums throughout the track and still a favorite among club goers. SOMEDAY WE'LL HAVE A BETTER WORLD has a gospel feel to it and reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's HEAVEN HELP US ALL with Eddie singing in his natural register. MY PEOPLE...HOLD ON is a major highlight here with African drums opening the song and on the break and DATE WITH THE RAIN is another dance favorite among today's club goers. I'M ON THE SIDELINE has Eddie's voice once again multi-layered throughout the song and the album closes with JUST MEMORIES, the B-side to IF YOU LET ME and with it's operatic opening, remains another highlight to this album.
EDDIE KENDRICKS (#5 R&B, #18 Pop), released in May 1973, charted higher than the above, especially on the strength of the #1 R&B/Pop hit KEEP ON TRUCKIN', most recently resurrected and remixed by DJ Spinna for the MOTOWN: REMIXED compilation (2005). ONLY ROOM FOR TWO opens the album and the Caribbean-sounding DARLING COME BACK HOME (#26 R&B, #67 Pop), was another hit off here. EACH DAY I CRY A LITTLE is IMO Eddie's finest performance and also a Quiet Storm favorite while CAN'T HELP WHAT I AM is a light tune on being who he is. ANY DAY NOW (originally performed by Chuck Jackson) and NOT ON THE OUTSIDE (originally performed by the Moments) are underrated remakes of soul classics and Eddie makes it his own on both selections and the album closes with WHERE DO YOU GO (BABY), a beautiful Pam Sawyer/Gloria Jones composition about Eddie wondering where his woman is when he isn't there.
This compilation doesn't include BOOGIE DOWN which followed EDDIE KENDRICKS, but according to the liner notes, it will be released in another double-disc set! In the meantime, we get to hear FOR YOU, released November 1974 (#8 R&B, #108 Pop). It opens with the laid-back PLEASE DON'T GO AWAY, while ONE TEAR (#8 R&B, #71 Pop), originally for Marvin Gaye and SHOESHINE BOY (#1 R&B, #18 Pop) became the biggest hits off of this album. DEEP AND QUIET LOVE is an underrated Quiet Storm performance while LET YOURSELF GO is another underrated funk performance. I played this one at one of my parties and the response was amazing! IF YOU THINK (YOU CAN) has great word play throughout the song. IF is a great remake originally performed by Bread and TIME IN A BOTTLE is just as good, originally performed by Jim Croce, which ends the album.
Folks, if you are not by now, this wonderfully packaged 2-CD set will make or renew your interest in Eddie Kendricks, IMO the greatest tenor that ever graced a record!
More More More.......2006-05-11
In a word - EXCELLENT!!.......2006-03-12
But finally, after so very long, some of Eddie's original albums are now available on CD. In this collection, we have four remastered EJK CDs from the 1970s:
ALL BY MYSELF (1971)
PEOPLE...HOLD ON (1972)
EDDIE KENDRICKS (1973)
FOR YOU (1974)
These four albums are chock full of quality material by Eddie, all produced by the team of Frank Wilson and Leonard Caston (except Eddie's debut LP, which was produced by Wilson alone). Looking for early popular cuts by EJK like "Can I", "This Used To Be The Home Of Johnnie Mae", "If You Let Me", "Girl You Need A Change of Mind", "Keep On Truckin'" and "Shoeshine Boy"? Well, like the compilation of hits CDs that Motown has issued previously, those songs are all here...but these are the albums where those choice cuts came from. Chronologically, the album BOOGIE DOWN from late 1973 - early '74 was completed and issued before FOR YOU. But due to the timing of the tracks on that album, BOOGIE DOWN couldn't be included here...but it will be in the next volume of Eddie's works, which will be released later on in '06. Be on the lookout for it.
I am very happy with this collection, and the remastering is nearly flawless. Only complaint I have is the remastering of the exquisite ballad "Each Day I Cry A Little" from the EDDIE KENDRICKS album - a song so hauntingly beautiful, it has to be one of the very best in the entire EJK catalog. However, the way it's mixed here has too much echo, the background singers' vocals are brought so far to the front at times you don't hear much of Eddie, and the strings are a bit overpowering, especially halfway through and towards the end of the song. I have the original vinyl LP and the mix is somewhat different. But other than that, this is a perfect collection of four of Eddie's excellent Motown solo albums. For anyone who has only brought Eddie's greatest hits CDs in the past and craved to have more, this is an absolute MUST for you to own!! Want to know why Eddie is one of the greatest R&B legends of all time and why he will never be forgotten? Song after song on this set shows the listener that this was no ordinary singer - here's the proof. Listen and enjoy.

[...].
You can buy it if you want, but it'll really leave you wanting more. It's mainly a repeat of the Ultimate collection and the Essential Collection. Lucky for me, my copy was a gift from the EJK Memorial Foundation when I attended this year's EJK Day. Any Eddie fans in the Washington DC Metro area should really try to go. It's a great tribute put together by Jimmy Dougans of the Young Senators, Eddie's traveling band.
I give it five stars for Eddie, but not for the Millenium part of it.

Eddie is addictive.......2003-02-21
Because this is a budget-priced compilation of his biggest hits, there are some cuts that aren't here, however it justifiably covers his most successful works: "Boogie Down (single version)", "Happy", "He's A Friend", "Goin' Up In Smoke" and the unedited version of "Girl You Need A Change Of Mind", a club classic (which should ONLY be listened to in its unedited form -- that's how magnificent it is!) to name a few. I was glad to FINALLY get "Son of Sagittarius" and "One Tear" on CD after all these years (never understood why these songs didn't make the ULTIMATE COLLECTION, those songs were big R&B hits).
Also included by obtaining the licensing from RCA was the 1985 live performance of Eddie and David Ruffin at the Apollo Theater with Hall and Oates...I hadn't heard it in years and it brought back so many good memories. Just to hear this was worth the price of the CD!
Although the liner notes were so-so, I enjoyed this CD immensely and I highly recommend it to anyone. But I have to warn you, that once you hear the golden-throated tenor/falsetto vocals of Eddie Kendricks, you'll be hooked. You're bound to want to hear more!

Product Description
Our Motown In Japan trilogy continues with a 1973 Temptations concert that has never before been released on compact disc anywhere in the world. For those keeping track of the ever-changing Temptations lineup, at this time it consisted of Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, Damon Harris, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. This lineup came together in 1971 after the departures of Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams and had a monster smash the following year with Papa Was A Rollin Stone. This tour, they were out in support of the modestly-titled Masterpiece album, and while they played about half the songs on that record in the concert, they didnt forget to pack in the hits. Also included was a gorgeous cover of Ewan Maccolls The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, which they had recorded in the studio for the All Directions album in 1972. Once again, we have included the original Japanese/English liner notes from the original LP release. As you might expect, the translations may be somewhat... inexact. Just ask Melbourne Franklin. But when you break open the shrinkwrap and pop it in the CD player, you will absolutely be transported to a great Temptations performance on a magical night far, far away.Customer Reviews:

Thank you, Motown..........2007-04-16
This three CD collection picks up where KEEP ON TRUCKIN': THE MOTOWN SOLO ALBUMS, VOL. 1 left off. It features the remainder of Eddie's Tamla material: BOOGIE DOWN (1974), THE HIT MAN (1975), HE'S A FRIEND, GOIN' UP IN SMOKE (both 1976), SLICK (1977) and eight "new" cuts that have been in the vaults for years. Plus the photos, individual LP info and the liner notes are packaged very well, so as you're listening, you'll be sure to be looking through that booklet.
BOOGIE DOWN, in my opinion, is probably the best of all the Kendrick LPs recorded on Motown, with PEOPLE...HOLD ON (featured in VOL. 1 and my personal favorite) a very close second. With tight lyrics, consistently beautiful and romantic melodies - and not to mention hot dance jams, this is the album that defines the easy-going style of the former Temptations' lead vocalist. He effortlessly goes from crooning warm and heartfelt ballads to laying down his silky falsetto tenor on fun, deliciously infectious disco/funk tracks. Frank Wilson, who had produced all of the Kendrick Motown albums except for three, certainly knew how to utilize the best in the late singer. If you had not had a taste of Eddie's work other than "Keep On Truckin'", then this is a CD worth hearing.
THE HIT MAN is one of Eddie's less stellar efforts on Motown, but the songs which were the hits from this album ("Happy", "Get The Cream Off The Top"), plus the soothing "Skippin' Work Today" more than makes up for whatever else is lacking.
HE'S A FRIEND is excellent, from beginning to end - not a bad cut in the bunch. The pairing of Eddie with the Philly Sound was truly a match made in Heaven, and apparently I was not the only one who felt this way - they went back and hooked up again for the follow up, GOIN' UP IN SMOKE. Although most of GOIN' UP IN SMOKE sounds like outtakes from the HE'S A FRIEND sessions, it is still pretty solid.
The SLICK LP, Eddie's final for the label was released in 1977 - but was actually recorded two years before and was put in the vault. Apparently the people at Motown didn't feel like this album was in the same league as the ones produced by Frank Wilson, who had left the label by then (SLICK was produced by Leonard Caston, Wilson's partner) and put it on the shelf. In its wake, the "Philly connection" was made. However, the highlight of this album is the seductive ballad, "Intimate Friends", which was yet AGAIN sampled - this time most recently by Alicia Keys in 2005 for her song "Unbreakable" that was on her UNPLUGGED CD. Being biased, I have to say that I would rather listen to the Kendricks' original.
For me, a Kendrick completist, the best part of this collection are the eight never-before-released tracks, which were all recorded between 1971 and 1975, my favorite being "That's All Behind You". This set is a bit pricey but well worth the purchase, one you will not regret putting money down for.

"... I could capture for you a star. But, these are meaningless things."
Oh, do I remember.
PEOPLE...HOLD ON is Eddie at his best.......2003-07-09
Produced by (now the Reverend) Frank Wilson and Chess Records alumni Leonard Caston, Jr., PEOPLE...HOLD ON was a concept album that was specifically geared towards Eddie's largest fan base --African-Americans -- and sold well among that market (as would all of his solo works). It featured cut after cut of songs that made the Thin Man from Birmingham get back to his roots: gospel-drenched ballads ("Day By Day", "Just Memories"), ballads with a funk/reggae-tinged edge ("If You Let Me", "Eddie's Love", "I'm On The Sideline"), hot dance cuts ("Girl You Need A Change of Mind", "Date With The Rain") and soulful message music ("Someday We'll Have a Better World", "My People...Hold On").
The title song, "My People...", is an absolute triumph, an adventurous, hypnotic tune that features African drums, chants, hand claps, and dramatic spoken passages. Talk about going back to your roots? Well, Eddie really put it on us here, taking us all the way back to the Motherland, with an almost revolutionary message. Particularly worth noting is the full version of the brilliant arrangement of "Girl You Need a Change of Mind", a song that addresses feminism, which is included here in its full glory. Relentlessly coming at you, it has a couple of breakdowns in the song that were similarly used with great success on Eddie's later hits "Truckin'" and "Boogie Down". "Change of Mind" has been documented by many to be the first disco record (playing time: 7:30), and it is still very popular in club circles and on classic soul radio. It stamped Eddie with the reputation for waxing some of the tightest dance tracks to ever come out of Motown in the '70s. His falsetto sounds wonderfully seductive, with the male voices in the background encouraging his rap...convincing an independent woman that he's in her corner, but he's asking her not to get so caught up in being a superwoman that she puts making love to him out of her mind ("Now I'm for women's rights, I just want equal nights"). Whatcha say to that?
Also worth mentioning is the the opening tune, a Frank Wilson composition, "If You Let Me". Eddie's pristine natural tenor is the focus here, and it is one of the best vocal performances he has ever turned in -- in or out of the Temptations. Pouring emotion into each lyric, you kind of get the feeling that the song indeed held some deep personal meaning for him. When he sings "Just tryin' to make ya see, my mind done all but left me"-- you honestly believe it. It was also Eddie's highest charting R&B single since his departure from the group, and signaled that something huge was on the horizon.
IMO, the only flaw on the album is "Let Me Run Into Your Lonely Heart", which is a raw, funky little cut, but the arrangement of the song is a bit too discordant for me to fully enjoy. But aside from that, PEOPLE...HOLD ON is something definitely worth "holding on" to, a true soul classic. Once you get this in your hands, you'll never want to let go. Motown, you know what to do -- get it back out there for us to enjoy on CD! This is, without a doubt, EJK's masterpiece.

A DAMN GOOD SONG!.......2005-11-05
Although I never liked the song "We Are the World," I fully supported the artists and rationale behind it. I didn't like that one because I felt the melody was maudlin and I didn't like the way it made me feel.
"Sun City" on the other hand is in-your-face politics and a rallying cry and banners being waved. It is a demand for the end of Apartheid in South Africa and a refusal to play venues that support Apartheid beliefs. Apartheid was notorious for the white-minority government, which was established in 1948. A myriad of talented artists including Little Steven, Ruben Blades, Bruce Springstein, Ringo Starr, Pete Townshend and many others poke their finger in the Apartheid eye with this in your face, militant anti-war and pro-humanitarian rights cry. This is a very serious, intense song that will make you want to dance as well! It will certainly arouse your social conscience!
The three versions of this wonderful song all stay true to the core melody. There are variations in the lyrics and one version alternates with verses of "we are the world," which I don't feel is as good as the other versions of this intensely stellar song.
Be sure to check out "No More Apartheid." Peter Gabriel's strong vocals ring out deep and pure and the message could not be made plainer. "Revolutionary Situation," is a musical montage replete with news clips; excerpts from songs and other revolutionary anthems. You can also hear police dogs barking, which brings to mind the Jim Crow southern United States during the Civil Rights era. "I am an Afrikaaner" brings home the message of terrorism and oppression under the Apartheid regime.
"Let Me See Your ID" is an outraged outcry agains the oppressive regime. Miles Davis' impressive trumpet playing underscores just how serious a matter this really is.
"Silver & Gold" is a hard, cutting edge piece about mining in South Africa at the expense of people. Bono lends his voice to this one along with Rolling Stones Keith Richards & Ron Wood. You can hear and feel the anger, so palpable in this song as to gain a better understanding of the issues this is about.
Sun City was more specific and more focused in its effort to call attention to social ills and injustices. Other efforts, such as Live Aid, Band Aid and USA For Africa as well as Farm Aid were much more global. Sun City is the demand for the release of Nelson Mandela and the UN boycott of South Africa.
In 1990, Mandela was finally released from prison and became President of South Africa, the first black person to hold this office. (Kind of reminds you of 1989, when Lech Walesa, a shipyard worker who was jailed in the 1980s for his direct involvement in Solidarity and the push for reforms on the shipyards; in the factories and in government. On June 4, 1989, Lech Walesa proudly voted in a free Polish Election, the first held since the end of WWII and was elected as leader of Poland)!
Music does have power to change the world. Go out there and listen to this one and it will certainly motivate you!
I AINT GONNA PLAY SUN CITY!!!!!.......2004-09-20
I AINT GONNA PLAY SUN CITY.
We ain't gonna play Sun City!.......2004-02-03
There are three versions of the title song, of which the opening track is the original. "Rockers and rappers united and strong" take turns singing the verses a la We Are The World, condemning Reagan's "quiet diplomacy" and phony homelands like Bophuthatswana. Pete Townshend's guitar, Ringo Starr's drums, Clarence Clemons' saxophone, and Miles Davis's trumpet contribute to the backing instrumentation.
The droning guitar and Peter Gabriel's wailing vocals form "No More Apartheid." That is followed by "Revolutionary Situation," a collage of music, bits of audio from press statements, and other revolutionary anthems compiled and edited by Keith LeBlanc and the News Dissector. Sounds of barking police dogs, protesters calling for both peace and violence, audio bits from Nelson Mandela, Piet Botha, and Ronald Reagan are put together. The ominous voice of "I am an Afrikaaner" demonstrates the powerful aura of oppression dominating the country.
The alternately energetic and laid back "Let Me See Your ID" is a series of righteously enraged raps, with even Peter Wolf and Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett contributing, with some musing, biting ironic commentary by Gil Scott-Heron, such as getting vocabulary from the media, such as Third World or casualties. On the latter, he says "nothing casual about dying, nothing casual about standing for freedom". Miles's magical trumpet-playing can be heard.
The instrumental jam "The Struggle Continues" was the first time I heard Miles Davis and this fits squarely in his post-fusion era, with support from drummer Sonny Okosuns, guitarist Stanley Jordan and keyboardist Herbie Hancock, whose instrumental solo bit is a highlight the same as Davis's trumpet was in the beginning moment of the jam.
"Silver And Gold" began life here before its inclusion on Rattle And Hum. Bono sings here without U2, aided by Rolling Stones Keith Richards and Ron Wood, about mining the above metals. The U2 frontman's voice becomes a barely contained whisper in parts, intense angst and anger in other places.
While benefit group collaborations like Band Aid, Live Aid, and USA For Africa, formed the basis of mass culture, the global village, and cultural crossover in a corporately-sponsored world, Sun City was more serious in its intent, calling for the release of Nelson Mandela and supporting the UN-sponsored cultural boycott of South Africa. Eventually, in 1990, five years after the Sun City album, Mandela was freed and became South Africa's first black African president, and I can't help thinking that Steve Van Zandt and the musicians here had a hand in that.
