Best of West Coast R&B Vocal Groups.......2000-12-14

This is Volume 1 of the 3 volume Dootone Records CD set from Ace. Dootone was started in the early fifties by Dootsie Williams to take advantage of the fast growing popularity of Rhythm and Blues. Working with the most basic instruments and equally basic recording equipment, Dootsie brought raw local high school kids to the microphone at his primitive "enclosed porch studio", where they made some of the best R& B vocal group recordings. This compilation has some of the nicest of those recordings. The biggest hits are not here. the monster hit,"Earth Angel" by the Penguins and "Heaven in Paradise" by the Meadowlarks and "The Letter" by the Medalions are on other Dootone reissues. There is still plenty of good stuff here amid the 28 tracks. From the rousing "Buick 59" by the Medallions and "Zoom" by the Cufflinks to the very nice "Guided Missiles" by the same Cufflinks and the great slow sides done by the Calvanes, this CD represents some of the best of West Coast fifties R&B Group harmonies. Along with the music you get a booklet with some original promo pictures and text on the groups and songs. As with most of these issues from Ace you get your money's worth with well put together product. You won't be disappointed. It is a shame that the people who put out the best packages of "real American music" are Europeans. they seem appreciate this art form more than Americans.
