5 out of 5 stars Shagging down memory lane.......2001-05-31

This is one of my favorite CDs.(OK, so I'm getting to the age where I'm sentimental.) I loved Beach Music when I was younger, and that hasn't changed. If you ever heard these songs on the Carolina beaches, you can't pass this up. It's worth every penny. If you recognize some of the songs, but never heard of beach music, you've got some catching up to do; but it's never too late! This one is definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should own this!.......2000-11-29

This is a great cd. It really covers some of the great beach music that is out there! If you buy any beach music cd, this should be the one! I hope everyone enjoys as much as I have!!

The second set of Rhino Records' The Doo Wop Box includes such gems as Robert & Johnny's "We Belong Together," Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl" and the Robins' original version of Leiber & Stoller's "Smokey Joe's Café." The box set contains 39 Top 30 R&B hits plus such pop smashes as the Platters' "My Prayer," the Clovers' "Love Potion No. 9," Dion & the Belmonts' "Where or When," the Crests' "Step by Step," the Marcels' "Heartaches" and Don & Juan's "What's Your Name." Putting more emphasis on uptempo tunes than its predecessor, the new box includes both the Cadillacs' "Zoom" and the Collegians' "Zoom Zoom Zoom" as well as Frankie Lymon's giddy, boy soprano on the galloping "ABC's of Love." The first Doo Wop Box is still the better collection, for it had first crack at the widely acknowledged classics of the genre, but The Doo Wop Box II is full of historical milestones and dizzying music. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not too great.......2005-09-25

While all of the music is good, there are only a few well know songs so I feel it was a big waste of a lot of money.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Rhino Doo Wop collection........2005-09-21

The Doo Wop Box, Vol. 2 takes up where the excellent Box #1 left off.
For the most part the songs are great, with the notable exception of The Falcons "I Found A Love" which suffers from not being doo-wop (it's proto-soul) and having terrible sound to boot. But only one clunker out of 101 is a pretty good batting average!
The rest of the songs are great and the recording quality is excellent.
This is a must-have set for fans of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent selection & sound quality.......2005-08-27

Many of these songs are not commonly found on other CD collections. They are all the original versions and are of excellent quality. A couple of them are the same songs as on a Time-Life doo wop CD I bought over 10 years ago and the difference in sound quality is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes the second helping is better.......2005-05-25

Most of the great classics of the genre are on the first Doo Wop Box, so Volume II has far fewer readily familiar titles to its credit. But if anything, the relative obscurity of most of these songs makes the second collection fresher and rootsier than the first. It definitely reaches deeper into the doo-wop canon.

Although few of this collection's songs were hits, many of the artists were successful elsewhere in their careers. There are lots of one-hit wonders represented here with their non-hits, quite a few of which have held up better than their more famous song(s). There are also at least two great entries in the "before they were famous" category: "Bad Girl" by the Miracles (about two years before "Shop Around" put them on the map); and the delightfully lush "Dear One" by the Scarlets, featuring a pre-Five Satins Fred Parris. Speaking of the Five Satins, the less famous of their two hits, "To The Aisle," is also here.

The collection is a pretty good mix of ballads and uptempo numbers, but it's heavier on the ballads. There is a surprising number of jazz and pop standards from long before the rock era (it's easy to forget that doo-wop didn't start out as proto-bubblegum!), but some of these are among the collection's best. Standouts include The Larks' "My Reverie," The Moonglows' "Secret Love," and the album's finale, The Classics' "Till Then." A more uptempo entry, The Four Tunes' rendition of "Marie," is less convincing but a lot of fun.

Of course, plenty of the ballads are in the more familiar '50s rock and pop style: The Vocaleers' "Is It A Dream," The Hearts' "Lonely Nights," Robert and Johnny's "We Belong Together," and especially The Five Keys' "My Saddest Hour" are sure to conjure your favorite necking-in-the-backseat scene (as are dozens of other songs included here; those are just my favorites). There are quite a few fast songs thrown in as well, to keep things from getting too misty. My favorites among these are The Cleftones' "Heart and Soul" (did you know that song had words?!), The Falcons' "You're So Fine," "In My Heart" by The Timestones, and The Spaniels' fast but still silky rendition of "Stormy Weather."

And there's more where that came from in all of the above categories. If you liked the first set, don't be gunshy about this one just because you don't know as many of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great follow up.......2005-03-11

I loved the first Doo Wop Box (I); for those of us who remember the really early, great groups and singers, it was a thrill to play each cassette. To think that they were able to find enough of the old records to make an entire new box; II. As with Box I, it comes with a thick booklet, crammed with pictures and info on each group/singer. And, the remastering makes the tracks sound new and probably better than the old 45's they came from. Almost beyond belief..!

5 out of 5 stars I Found My Thrill~.......2006-06-23

I grew up listening to these oldies from our local radio station on a little transistor, (sister) luckily that my dad bought me in his travels, and my mom unplugged it from my ear every night!! This cd has some great oldies on it..."Bread and Butter" by the Newbeats is a classic!!!! I know my kids have gotten a kick out of that crazy, jazzy, falsetto, screeching blues voice on that rock and roll classic number as I sang along to the radio in the car~and thought I was nuts at the same time...it's in a league of its own. An early Brian Hyland is nice here, before "Illusive Butterfly of Love" fame~ My 14 year old who sings loves Paul Anka's "Put Your Head On My Shoulder"~and "Shake Rattle and Roll" was a classic Jitter Bug tune~ What is also interesting as I look at these top 10 hits is a social, cultural change...together on the charts was a beginning...people were together in their love of music. I know certain movies outlined this music era as a progressive sign of change and togetherness among people, teens, in their excitement with this music. This cd is such a nice mix with Buddy Holly's unique sound, The Teddy Bears live sound, Fats Domino's huge hit, (and used to the max on Happy Days) The Everly Brothers unforgettable harmonies everyone still loves, and all the others.... "Rama Lama Ding Dong" was the key song in "Grease" my teens know, but I want them to hear the original~As a child of the 50s and 60s, this music is as important to our roots as the newer oldies, such as the Byrds I just bought to enjoy and have my teens, who are playing guitar now, learn the roots of (my) Led Zepplin (cd they stole from me and love)~Each era builds on the last, and it's great when kids know that and enjoy the gems from each past era~I will be glad to add this to my collection as this cd is a gem~Luv to all~Keep On Rockin'

4 out of 5 stars Great oldies on this CD! .......2005-08-08

This is one of my favorite oldies but goodies CD out of the collection! It contains fantastic music from the 50s and 60s, but also has a small touch from the 70s with Before the Next Teardrop Falls by Freddy Fender. Here you have such classics like Sealed with a Kiss, At the Hop,Popsicles and Icicles, and two songs that hit the top 40 on the R&B charts!

4 out of 5 stars Oldies But Goodies Vol.2.......2000-06-16

I Think Oldies But Goodies Vol,2 is a classic oldies album with all the atmosphere and wonder that the 50's and 60's embodied . I would recommend this to any that loves the feel and passion that this bygone era was and ever will be.

A one star rating is too high! The singers covering the old classic music on this CD are so bad it's an insult to the great artists that originally cut these classic songs. Keep far away from albums like this that do not include ALL of the original artists.

    4 out of 5 stars I don't care if I die.......2004-08-01

This CD does a good job of covering Atlantic Records R&B output between 1952 and 1955. However, the track listing is messed up. There were two songs accidently left off the list, bringing the total number of songs to 26. Here is the complete track listing:

    2. Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean - Ruth Brown
    3. Good Lovin' - The Clovers
    4. Wild Wild Young Men - Ruth Brown

    4 out of 5 stars A golden age of Doo-Wop classic.......2000-10-07

This is simply one of the best mixes of original 50's Doo-Wop cuts. Just about everyone of these numbers is a classic. From the lush "Lovers Never Say Goodbye" by the Flamingos to the first great girl group The Chantels and the stirring vocal of Arlene Smith on "Maybe", through the 1956 recording of a "Thousand Miles Away" by the Heartbeats and ending with the best "end of the dance", recording ever, the Spaniels "Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight" this compilation will bring back those golden memories. If you are just begining to listen to Doo-Wops, you would be hard pressed to find a better sampling of these classics.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs of the 50's and 60's.......2003-09-16

As the previous reviewer stated, these songs don't cover the 20th century of American music. If however, you enjoy the music of the 50's and 60's, especially doo wop, you will enjoy this CD. It contains 25 songs which are readily available on other CD's, and if you don't have already have them, this would provide you with great songs from this time period. To call the CD "The Millennium's Greatest Hits", however, is a stretch, because it contains nothing of Irving Berlin or George M. Cohan who would most certainly have songs included if the CD was truly "the millennium's greatest hits." However, songs such as Sherry, Happy Together, Earth Angel, Little Star, The Great Pretender, Blue Moon, My Girl, You Belong to Me, and Come Go With Me are some of the memorable songs that are included. Songwise, you won't be disappointed. However, if you expect earlier songs than the 50's, it would be best for you to try something else.

4 out of 5 stars Forget the Millennium Hype; These Are Great Songs.......2001-02-10

If you ignore the "millennium" hype of the title of this (so far) two volume series by Collectables, you get nearly seventy minutes of some of the best songs of the early rock 'n' roll era. [The earliest is 1954's doo-wop classic "Earth Angel"; the newest song is The Turtles' million-seller "Happy Together" from 1967.]

Like Volume One, there is a heavy emphasis on doo-wop, including such memorable songs as "Since I Don't Have You," "Little Star," "You Belong To Me," "There's a Moon Out Tonight." In fact, except for a handful of songs, these are all pre-Beatles Invasion hits. But that's not to diminish the power of the music included here. Just how great are these songs? In music critic Dave Marsh's wonderful book The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made, he includes seventeen of these songs (tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 23, 24 and 25). If these songs are missing from your collection, this is a terrific disc to remedy that. My only knock on this is Collectables' lack of any meaningful liner notes or recording information. All you get is a track listing, the artist name and the label Collectables licensed these songs from. But what terrific songs! RECOMMENDED

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album!.......2007-04-09

I had this (and Vol. 1) on cassette 20 years ago and listened to them all through high school and college. Somehow I lost them between Ohio and Tennessee, but was so very thrilled to recently re-discover them on CD! I still enjoy them as much as I did then and have had the pleasure of introducing some fantastic songs to my husband!

There isn't a bad song on the entire album... in fact as I'm typing this up I have some of my favorites from it making my toes tap along to the typing!! Not one to miss if you like oldies or if you want to start an oldies collection (like I did so many years ago...)!

5 out of 5 stars Forever and ever doo-wop!.......2007-01-12

DOO-WOP FOREVER VOL. 2, issued by EMPIRE in 2006, is a great anthology of 1950s and early '60s music. The songs (even the "cover" versions) all have a fresh and vivid sound. The majority of sides here, although little-known to the casual fan, are fine examples of vocal group harmonies. An accompanying 12-page booklet is packed with details about the performers and their works.

If you're curious about this genre, DOO-WOP FOREVER Vol. 2 is a great place to begin your explorations. And for those already familiar with the vocal group "classics," this set provides different takes on several, plus some rarities seldom found in such compilations.
