Originally best-known as an Italian-born model who had affairs with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, Bruni has matured into a remarkably talented and self-possessed singer-composer-guitarist. Her debut album, sung mostly in French, could best be described as neo-chanson. Bruni's whispery, wobbly, husky voice, wryly deadpan delivery and introspective lyrics recall Francoise Hardy, Barbara, Jane Birkin and Nico. But unlike her forebears, who so often posed as waif-like child-women and doormat-like victims of passion, Bruni remains firmly on top. Her lyrics can and do celebrate true love but she also praises the delights of female sexual empowerment in no uncertain terms, as on J'en Connais ("I've Known A Few"). Musically, the tunes range from folk Français to echoes of le jazz hot to bluesy torch numbers. The spare, mostly acoustic instrumentation is unfussy and atmospheric, while the I-couldn't-care-less ambience is occasionally punctuated by chimes, insouciant whistling or an impudent, sly giggle. --Christina Roden

Album Description

V2 Records cordially invites you to a very special listening experience of Carla Bruni. Rarely does an album come along that touches everyone who listens to it, even those that do not speak the language in which it was recorded.

Quelqu'un M'a Dit, the first album from the acclaimed French singer-songwriter, Carla Bruni, captures you with the first note and leaves you humming the last.

The Franco-Italian beauty sings of love and loves lost with the ability to evoke powerful images across any language barrier.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The words, the mood. Fantastic! .......2007-07-17

None of the reviews have mentioned the words. I speak a little french but not enough so I googled the lyrics in french, and then copied them to babelfish and had them translated. THEY'RE SO GREAT! They're very smart and the philosophy is deep... really, they're not about how sad love is at all. If anything they're very playful and mischevious. Je suis le plus beau she sings that she's the handsomest man in the neighborhood and all the women swoon for her, so do their husbands. In J'en Connais she talks about how her poor mama throws up her hands and says What have I done wrong. In Le Derniere Minute she sings, in one minute, how on her death bed she'll be pleading with death for one last minute...

The thing that makes her unique is how she sets a mood. It's very different from Sade or Nora Jones. Like them, Her delivery and melodies are very intimate, as if she's singing in your ear. But what makes her sexy isn't fake sighs and the whimpers,it's the playful teasing tone. Like you're laying in bed with her, she tells you little fantasies and makes little murmuring jokes... What a sexy mood!

I'm besotted with her right now.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, but only 37 mins. of music .......2007-06-08

Great sound. I really like Carla Bruni's sensuous, natural voice. Perhaps a bit disappointing that there's only 37 mins. of music on this CD.

3 out of 5 stars good effort.......2007-03-09

This cd has some nice tunes, and Carla has a sexy, come-hither voice, making for a seductive album. But ultimately her songs all tend to sound mostly the same, and the monotone of her voice and style can tend to annoy.

5 out of 5 stars so beautiful it makes you want to cry.......2007-03-02

This album is so sweet and beautiful. The gentle nuances of Bruni's voice move you to fall in love with your surroundings. it really is so beautiful it makes you want to cry.

5 out of 5 stars King & Queen: Aces.......2006-11-08

Memphis has produced many great musicians. Sam Phillips' Sun Studio, launched in February 1952, boasted Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. Beale Street started BB King's career. And then there was Stax/Volt, home to Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Johnnie Taylor and Rufus Thomas. These Stax acts, ably backed by one of the greatest studio bands of all time, otherwise known as Booker T. and the MGs, have left us unmatched rhythm and blues. (Now, I'm not going to get into the argument of which had the greatest studio band, Detroit's Motown, Atlantic's Muscle Shoals, or Stax: I'm just not competent to do so, unfortunately. I'm just going to say that with Booker T and the MGs behind him, Otis Redding has to be on the short list for greatest rhythm and blues singer, greatest Southern soul singer, however you prefer to characterize his music.) "Sitting on The Dock of the Bay," "Knock on Wood," "Try a Little Tenderness," "I'm Coming Home:" the man had range. What he didn't have, on his own, was humor: that's where Carla Thomas, daughter of Rufus, came in. "Tramp" is an exuberant corn-pone-flavored duet: once heard, it lingers in the mind, or at least in mine. It's funny. The rest of this record, first released in 1967, lingers well, too: the covers of several rock and roll masterpieces like "Tell It Like It Is," "It Takes Two,"and "Bring It On Home to Me," are crisp, light-handed, and sure-footed.

People say that the late, great Marvin Gaye never sang better than when he was paired with Tammi Terrell; that's a matter of personal taste, and I wouldn't say the same about Otis Redding and Carla Tucker. I would say they sang superbly together: if you love 1960's Southern soul, you want to get this rare record before it goes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-08-05

I had to write this because I couldn't believe that none of the people that already reviewed it mentioned "Are You Lonely For Me, Baby?" Definately the best song on the album and one of the best Otis ever recorded. The rest kick ass too.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Duo.......2005-07-30

How can anybody from Georgia - even the South - not think that Carla Thomas & Otis Redding are sui generis. The song "Tramp" with their clever exchange of lyrics, and gold digger/dirt farmer jokes is a hoot. "Otis," says Carla, "you ain't nuthin' but country." Otis replies, "That's right, baby. Yes I is." She complains, "You can't buy me diamonds or minks." And he comes back, "Why, woman, I can buy you anything you want - rat, squirrell, frog, anything!" The romantic songs are as good as it gets, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Monarchy.......2000-12-05

Otis Redding & Carla Thomas recorded one album together, but it is an R&B gem. Motown started the duet album trend by pairing Marvin Gaye with Mary Wells, Kim Weston & most famously Tammi Terrell, so this was Stax/Volt's rebuttal. The album is made up of mostly covers, but Mr. Redding & Ms. Thomas attack the songs with a ferocity and verve that makes them sound all there own. Mr. Redding's smooth voice easily mingles with the sass of Ms. Thomas' and this is no better illustrated than on "Tramp" which is pure Southern Soul. They do a tender take on Sam & Dave's "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" and Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is" while ripping it up on Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" & "Lovey Dovey". It is interesting to hear them do the Gaye/Weston song "It Takes Two" as there is always was a rivalry between Motown & Stax/Volt. King & Queen was a boastful title and the two more than live up to the claim.

5 out of 5 stars King and Queen.......2000-11-02

A fairly swell collection of duets between Otis and Carla. They fit together like, well, King and Queen. If you like the Stax/Memphis sound and Otis Redding and/or Carla Thomas, you can't go wrong on this one. Their version of Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood" is an absolute classic. Great Album. Buy it before it goes out of print!

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD!!.......2007-06-08

It is always great when you hear a musician with such a unique style and beautiful voice. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars promises, promises.......2007-05-27

I saw this CD advertised in the windows of several record stores in Amsterdam. Bruni is a model-turned-singer, and here she's interpreting poetry as music. It comes across nicely, in chanteuse style...nice, light, and enjoyable. Great music for a dinner party, methinks.

4 out of 5 stars Poetry in music for folk guitars and smoky, sultry voice........2007-03-03

Auden and Yeats are among the finest English-language poets of the 19th and 20th centuries, endowed with rare insight and sensitivity.
Now W. H. Auden, W. B. Yeats and several others have taken on an unlikely new guise.
Their poems -- along with those by two other Britons, Walter de la Mare and Christina Rossetti, and two Americans, Dorothy Parker and Emily Dickinson -- are likely to enter the Top Ten in Europe.
Four years after her debut album after her first album, "Quelqu'un m'a dit" (Someone told me), which sold two million copies, Carla Bruni, the Italian former fashion supermodel offers a collection of music and poetry : 11 beautiful poems set to Carla Bruni's inspired melodies.
She gives a real personal interpretation of these poems with romanticism, melancholy which form a feeling of loneliness.
The album, "No Promises", has divided music critics between supporters hailing a new departure for Europop and detractors perplexed by haunting English verse half-sung and half-spoken in a sensual voice accompanied by folk guitars.
Although the writers have been set to music before -- the composer Benjamin Britten collaborated with Auden, and the singer Joni Mitchell has drawn on Yeats's verse, for example -- Bruni's work is a novelty.
In France , some newspapers wrote rave revues.
I personally like it.
It's different,it's delicate, it's elegant.
Have your say !

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough Norah Jones? Try Some Carla Bruni.......2007-03-01

This popular French/Italian singer delivers her first English language CD and it is a beauty, setting some American and British poetry to music in a manner in which the most accurate description is "simply lovely." With a honey-smoked voice like a young Marianne Faithfull, the songs exude a peaceful mood like being the last couple on the dancefloor in the backyard of a Southern mansion on a magnolia-scented sultry summer's night. The soulful, languid vocals build up a momentum as the CD moves along and, as a whole, are a lot less sleepy than Norah's latest effort. Try "I Felt My Life with Both My Hands," "Promises Like Pie-Crust," "If You Were Coming In The Fall," "Ballade at the Thirty-Five" and "At Last The Secret Is Out" and taste the musical delicacy that is Carla Bruni.

Quidam's music can best be described as both an eclectic and esoteric mix. It would be very difficult to categorize the music on this CD into any one genre. From the rocking Zydeko to the beautiful song Seisouso, to the eastern European sounding Rivage, this CD will have something for everyone. And it is a must have for anyone who has seen Quidam.

Cirque Du Soleil (Quidam) wouldn't be such a hit without it's soundtrack. You can recapture the experience of the dark but lively mood through the tracks on this CD. Definately a collectible.

I picked up a copy of this set very cheaply on Ebay [UK] with no big expectations about its quality, having been brought up on the old maxim that you get what you pay for. Boy, was I ever wrong. This edition surpasses my expectations big time and while my ultimate wish is to be wealthy enough to own a set of Solti's Ring Cycle I am beginning to enjoy this set more and more.

The vocals come through clearly and for a live performance the sound is very clean. My edition came with the lyrics in German only, so unless your German is reasonably good you will need to find an English translation somewhere to help you out, but this is a small quibble. If you know the storyline you'll be able to follow things reasonably well. Having caught the Wagner bug at age 15 I can once again feel the bug takingi ts effect:-)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording at reasonable price.......2004-01-26

In my view this recording is under-rated by Wagnerians, perhaps because they are a bit snooty about a conductor who doesn't have the same international reputation as Karajan or Solti. Don't be fooled! This is an excellent recording, with crystal-clear sound quality and some great performances from the singers. Neuhold moves the action on at a good pace and the fact that it was recorded live adds excitement. There is very little audience noise throughout. At this price I recommend this recording highly, particularly for newcomers to the Ring cycle who can't afford the Solti. Even seasoned Wagnerians will enjoy it too, I think.

5 out of 5 stars A Ring Cycle for everyone!.......2003-03-03

Such a bargain, this Ring cycle is. When I first wanted to listen to Wagner's magnum opus, I had to borrow from libraries and friends. While in college, I scraped up enough to by Furtwangler's old mono recording. Great performance but depressed sonics.

Now comes this excellent performance, live (all the better), with excellent sound! And at a price even poor students on a budget can afford. Better yet, have mom and dad spring for your copy. No family should be without one!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent complete Ring at a reasonable price........2003-01-20

I got this ... fairly cheaply and was surprised by the quality of the recording and the performance. This is a live performance that was digitally recorded (DDD), so the sound is quite good with almost no audience noise. The conducting is thoughtful and lyrical, and the quality and accuracy of the playing is quite good. The singers are not particularly world-famous as in the Solti or Karajan recordings, but the singing is clear and crisp, so that you can easily understand and/or follow the lyrics in the libretto. The fact that it is a live performance lends an immediacy and excitement that is lacking in the glitzier studio-recorded performances. Those who enjoy the 1953 Bayreuth recording by Krauss will find much to enjoy here. I have listened to many renditions of the Ring cycle over the years, and I would place this recording close to the top (after Krauss, Solti, and Karajan). It's a delightful discovery at a bargain price for a complete Ring cycle. I would highly recommend it, even as a first introduction to the Ring. The version I got did not come with a libretto, but that was no problem since I have libretti from other sets of the Ring that I own. In addition, several websites carry the German libretto with an English translation.

5 out of 5 stars Carla is my Queen.......2006-03-04

After hearing her in Charming Hostess, Tin Hat Trio, and seeing her play with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, it's about time that Ms. Kihlstedt tried going out on a limb and seeing what she could do on her own. The results? An eclectic mix of folk, jazz, klezmer, and avantgarde thanks to John Zorn's Tzadik label. She plays her strings as if she were discovering them for the first time, and uses her own voice as an instrument the way that Mike Patton has. Carla has an ability to sound both heavenly and creepily haunting at the same time (row your boat is scary) that I love. I try to collect everything that she has done, and I think that this is a tie (along with Charming Hostess) for being her best project.

5 out of 5 stars eclectic solo album from quirky lady........2004-08-30

Carla Kihlstedt is quite a remarkable violinist/vocalist in her myriad projects. She is one of the founding members of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (killer avant-rock band), the Tin Hat Trio (a chamber jazz trio of guitar, violin, and accordion), and is one of the singers in Charming Hostess (their album _Eat_ is a great blend of progressive female vocals, Eastern European motifs, twisted folk music, and avant-rock quirks). She has been a contributor to many others artists' recordings, including John Zorn, Tom Waits, and Mr. Bungle. She has made quite a name for herself in the San Francisco bay area as a classical performer and improviser. So what does her solo album offer?

Like the expanse of her career, Kihlstedt's solo album is quite diverse. For the most part it consists of Kihlstedt's avant-garde art songs as well as a few atonal instrumental musings. The writing is extremely strong, and given her background (especially with Charming Hostess) it is really no surprise that her vocal lines are ravishing. There's the catchy opener, "Empty Cupboard", which sounds like something Kate Bush might have done with more classical background. "Rooting for the Shy Librarian" is a feisty track with catchy "ooh"s and "ahhh"s over a repetitive violin figure. "Last Resort" opens with picturesque but sorrowful solo violin, then enters slow, elegiac vocal lines: "Before you cut my rotting tree find me a last resort." Then there's "Trampolina", which sounds like a bizarre nursery rhyme. "Patchen" is a mere two minutes, building on a minimalist texture of quiet but fast violin lines weaving beneath an elusive and graceful vocal.

The instrumental pieces are fewer in number, but they are also quite rad. First there is "World of Made", an insane pointillist array of string pizzicatos playing the hell out of catchy melody. "Far and Wee" is a beautiful duet for violin and viola where one plays a seductive melody and the other blitzes through scratchy runs. "When Will Tomorrow End?" is the last piece of the cd, with Kihlstedt playing "trumpet violin." I don't know what on earth that is (sounds like the two eponymous instruments being played at once, sorta), but its contemplative lyricism makes a nice ending for this great album.

5 out of 5 stars I want to marry Carla Kihlstedt.......2004-04-25

I write music myself. It is my passion. She is one of my new favorite composers. If I could, this is the music I would be writing.

The first time I heard her play was on Mr. Bungle's California release. Then, I saw the Tin Hat Trio and was completely blown away. Next it was Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, which quickly became my favorite band. Yesterday I listened to 2 Foot Yard and my first reaction was giddiness. I loved every minute of it and was left wanting more.

Now I will attempt the impossible - describing truly original music. If you have heard Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Tin Hat Trio, you can use that as a point of reference. Kihlstedt has an uncanny knack for creating hauntingly broken harmony and then finding just the right melody to gel it together. Her music is just the right mix of all sorts of popular music and modern classical. She is a fan (and so am I) of close, harmonies that are dissonant, but that have an almost consonant effect. It is truly beautiful music that constantly demands your attention. How about progressive, intelligent pop (and I use that term in the loosest way possible) meets Weil meets Webern.

5 out of 5 stars Everytime i hear it, I want to hear it again, a loop........2003-12-31

It is just amazing how a musician can get their music into you and make you feel it. Carla Kihlstedt does that and more. I hate it when people call her the next Tom Waits; she is just Carla. If you liked one song you heard on the radio and you want the whole album to be like that, you can go with linkin park, Cause diversity is the motto of this album.

This CD has so much variety one can't put a genre on it. Snappy songs like "Empty Cupboard" will make you think you are listening to Squirrel nut zippers for a while (which is not bad), but then it turns mellow. After that "World of made" an entirely crazy pizzicato song. "Peel" shows how a dissonance can be beautiful and funny at the same time. "Flinch" lets Carla's anger out as she screams with distortion on her beautiful voice. After hearing this you can say "screw slayer". "Trampolina" starts as a kiddy song, a really scary one and then evolves into a demonstration of cymbals, and then evolves again, and again and again. Until it ends on a really frightening note and goes to the kiddy song again, but now with a background noise that resembles an Angelo Badalementi Soundtrack. "Patchen" sounds like a war song, really thrilling and full of suspense and emotion. "On Walking" is a true masterpiece, it is so beautifully haunting, random, eerie, etc. It lets us see how skillful she is (not on a malmsteen kind of way), and how much sounds you can get off a violin. Her voice is phantasmagoric but beautiful; it is a song that will require a bucket to listen to, so you can drool all you want. This song literally shocked a friend, to the point that he used it for a short video for a university project. The final song "When will tomorrow end" is melancholic, the instruments are beautifully played here, they make it sound like it is an old vinyl, it is a perfect closing for a perfect album.

This CD tickles your spine, plays with your mind and touches your heart in a good way. I don't think it is an easy CD to listen to, but once you get hooked you just won't stop playing it.

I skipped some songs cause I can only do 1000 words on this, the only thing I can say to end the review is: if you see this CD elsewhere, at any price, get it at any cost.

Rating 5+++++/5 (This CD is too much for ratings.)

5 out of 5 stars Debut? Maybe. Stunning? Absolutely........2003-08-17

While violinist Carla Khilstedt has been an active participant in many bands and recordings (Tin Hat Trio, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Charming Hostess among many others) this is her first recording as a leader, and it's a doozy. Ranging from the sublime ("50 Miles") to the harrowing ("Flinch") to the delicate ("Another Day"), this album brings to bear all Kihlstedt's formidable range, highlighting the strengths of a musician of rare ability.

Voice and strings are served by small, often intimate arrangements, bringing you into the music. Songs have individual character, differing greatly in tone, content and style, yet all the music is of one basic nature, obviously from one mind and voice. To visit so many musics in one outing is remarkable, but doing so and still retaining such a strong sense of individual identity is exceptional, probably the best single word to describe this album.

For my money this is THE record of the year. Confident without being cocky, beautiful without being self-absorbed, skillful but not gratuitously so. Accessable to the casual listener but a wealth of depth for the discerning musician, I cannot think of a single thing I'd change. This is a stellar piece of work from one of the most interesting musicians working today.

Get it. Put it in your brain.
