5 out of 5 stars None of the usual filler - a classic Motown outing.......2005-10-30

This album is one of those which critics tend to describe as "a pop confection." Most of it is light and breezy, and may not stay with you longer than the 32 or 33 minutes it takes to listen to it, but all of it is finely crafted soul from Motown's most underrated girl's group. The Marvelettes as usual do songs from a variety of producers/songwriters including Ashford and Simpson (the classic "Destination: Anywhere"), Smokey Robinson (the biggest hit "My Baby Must Be a Magician" and an upbeat version of "What's Easy for Two is Hard for One"), and some surprises like the UK-only single "Reaching for Something I Can't Have," and the Ivy Jo Hunter penned "The Stranger," a strangely dark and very sexy song about a one-night stand. You just know Berry Gordy wouldn't have let Diane Ross sing this one!

Wanda Young's voice was never better than on the last few Marvelettes albums and this was their last one to hit the charts even though they had two more excellent albums, "In Full Bloom" and the ironically titled "Return of the Marvelettes," which was actually a Wanda Young solo project.

I've had the album "Sophisticated Soul" in one format or another since it first came out and I never get tired of it!

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Soul, Indeed!.......2004-11-06

This album (pardon me, cd!) is one of the priceless "undiscovered jewels" in the Motown treasure chest! Wanda Rogers' husky, breathy, sexy vocals are brilliant; even more so when you consider that she and Smokey created this album without much help from the Motown higher echelon (which was more attuned to making Miss Ross a movie star at this point).
Ann Bogan (the last Motown hired Marvelette), rivals Wanda with a powerfull performance of her own.
Along with "The Return of the Marvelettes" (another wonderful Wanda-Smokey project unpromoted into obscurity), Sophisticated Soul is one of the BEST examples of the famed Motown Sound. Buy it today, you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars The most sucessful containing album they put out........2003-11-20

In 1968, Wanda led the now trio, with the guidance of Smokey Robinson. They now had changed their "girl-group-pop" sound to "fluffy soul" like the SUPREMES70s. Features tons of hits including the smash "My Baby Must be A Magician" (#17), "Destination Anywhere" (#63, "Here I Am Baby" (#44), "i'm Gonna Hold on As Long As I Can" (#76, features Anne Bogan, Gladys' Horton's replacement on lead) and "Don't Mess With Bill Two:You're the One for Me Bobby" this song and "You're the One" (#44 in 1966 not 8)were not hits or releases of 1968 like the others "For Me Bobby" was released as the b-side to their last release in November 1971 "A Breath Taking Guy". Others songs include "Stranger," "Someway, Somehow,""Reaching For Something I Can't Have,"Don't Make Hurting Me A Habit,"What's Easy For2", and "Your Love Can Save Me"

I love the cd, even if it got horrible reviews, I like it especially "You're the One...Bobby" is beautiful.
This poorly and quickly done horrible session of the Marvelettes does include some beautuful songs, so you must get it for your collection! Beautiful!

If ya can't find it here you can find it on Ebay IN cd OR lp formats.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling live performer.......2004-03-17

Seeing Earl Thomas perform over the weekend was a pefect complement to the Hi Records compilaton I have been listening to recently. Thomas is a compelling live performer, in the style of Al Green, and that alone should make people buy this album. He believes what he is singing and his intelligent conversation with the audience between songs was quite refreshing.Strong band, back-up singers. I'd go see him again.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific blues singer.......2003-12-21

I've been listening to Earl Thomas for many years now. This is his first album that has hit the big time. He has a very soulful voice with a great range. I've enjoyed all of his music, but this CD is one of the best by far. "I Won't Be Around" is one of my favorites. "Stronger Than My Flame" is a good sample song if you're looking to try him out. Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-06-21

I know you're interested in discovering great new Smooth Jazz artists. Otherwise you wouldn't be reading this right now. Read on, then, my jazz loving brethren... 'Cause I've got a hot tip for you: Mark Hollingsworth, amazing sax player, Chicago native now in L.A., featured with the Greg Adams band for almost three years, studio work and tours with more big names than you can imagine, plus TV, motion pictures, commercials... It's unbelievable. Did I mention that he plays sax? Whoa, does he play sax! This brand new debut solo release is ON THE MARK, literally and figuratively, with all of the ingredients you're looking for in a hit Smooth Jazz album. Great melodies, solid grooves, polished, top-drawer musicianship and production, plus that extra hard-to-define aura, that sense of passion and confidence that tells you that Mark really knows what he's doing here, and understands how to touch the Smooth Jazz listener on a visceral level. He's got it! No clinkers on this album... not a one. With nine sparkling originals that include keyboardist Dan Siegel as a special guest on one, and an awesome T.O.P.'esque cover of L.T.D.'s "Back in Love Again", ON THE MARK is what today's dynamic sounding Smooth Jazz is and should be all about. And since I'm dropping acronyms, allow me to encourage you to pick up a copy of O.T.M. A.S.A.P. This is as surefire a Smooth Jazz hit as you're ever going to find. ~Scott O'Brien

When I bought this CD, I listened to it 10 times the first day I owned it. Mark sure knows how to play the Sax. This CD inspires me to dust off my sax and start playing it again. Great job Mark! You are definitely "On the Mark".

5 out of 5 stars What jazz is all about........2004-01-20

I love many types of jazz, from raging European free music to contemporary post-bop to early swing and most things in between. But to my ears, you'll find the real essence of jazz on these two wonderful discs: short, _melodic_, enormously catchy tunes filled with great hooks and played with a masterful combination of elegant grace and hard-swinging soulful swagger.

Most of the tunes run in the three-minute range, so the solos are long enough to let the musicians say something individual, but you don't have to deal with the extended workouts found on many later jazz albums that tend to highlight players' failings as much as their strengths. I've heard a lot of later Cannonball, but for my money, this is some of his best material as a leader (though don't miss the classic Somethin' Else on Blue Note, featuring Miles Davis).

Fun, beautiful music--what more do you need?

4 out of 5 stars Tight, classy, swinging bebop unit of the fifties.......1999-01-18

This fine re-issue celebrates the complete output of the first Cannonball Adderley Quintet co led by brother Nat. Four LP's in total - To the Ivy League, Sophisticated Swing, Cannonball Adderley Enroute and Cannonballs Sharpshooters. Supporting players include Junior Mance(pno) Sam Jones or Al McKibbon (Bs) and Specs Wright or Jimmy Cobb (dms). Cannonball's greatest moments may have been with Miles Davis on SOMETHING ELSE(BLUE NOTE) or MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE(Columbia) but on this re-issue his punchy attack, fabulous swing, and distinctive sound are a real treat. If there's one thing that's memorable about this music it's the damn swagger, the sense of joie de vivre that this group had. It may be not as distinguished as the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet (there's no Parisienne Thoroughfare here)but it's in the same ball park. The supporting musicians are perfectly suited to this approach and if Jimmy Cobb and Cannonball wanted a night off from Miles' intensity at the time, this is the music I'd imagine they'd play for fun. There are 36 tracks(repeat 36 tracks) some as long as nine minutes all brilliantly remastered and this represents real musical value for money. Although the uptempo numbers tend to follow a format of Horn Chorus of the main theme, alto solo, cornet solo, piano solo, bass solo, drum break(maybe)horn chorus of the main theme, coda and out, there are tracks which just feature Cannonball (he brings to the ballad What's New an appropriate sardonic humour which exactly fits the lyric as interpreted by say Peggy Lee)but some of the arrangements are by genius Ernie Wilkins and there are some wonderful surprises like the medium tempo romp of Straight No Chaser which has a brilliant alto solo and a truly soulful beautifully expressed cornet solo by Nat, as if he's saying on the horn "Monk - I Love You." In summary, there's not a dud track on this double CD issue; the swagger and panache of a player completely in control of his art and craft is evident in every note Cannonball plays; brother Nat is a joy, and all supporting players hang in there with aplomb. One of my best buys of 1998.

Album Description

"I Used To Be..." is an artfully captured collection of personal insights and reflections spanning Gail's songwriting archives of the past 18 years. Her compositions range from rock, to funk, to country, and pop in it's purest sense. The album, in addition to Gail's stellar vocal, guitar and bass performances features Catherine Russell from the Bowie band, The B-52's drummer Zach Alford (previously of David Bowie band) and a host of renowned musicians from Gail's Woodstock, NY community. "I Used to Be" features two collaborations between Gail Ann Dorsey and Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears: "Be My Angel" and "Whether You are the One."

5 out of 5 stars look what the universe can do.......2005-01-29

This stellar musician moves deftly between different genres and bestows upon each song alternately delicate and rocking touches.
The woman has mastered the tools of voice and bass and keeps pushing them to further degrees.

MS. Dorsey is one of those rare musicians who brings such depth and new life through vocals and bass guitar. Someone of this exceptional caliber gives justice to the notion of being "touched by God." Genius permeates her work at almost every step.

This accomplished disc is diverse and multifaceted with infinite textures to be enjoyed over and over again. The songs are rich and enduring.

Those of us who have followed her through the years (for me it was TFF through all the Bowie years) have been won over for some time. It's nice to see her shine all on her own.

Gails new cd " i used to be" was so moving. I only have a few cd's and i am glad this is one of them. My favorite song is "Nether Land". I love it

5 out of 5 stars Gail is amazing!.......2004-05-26

I bought this record from the merch booth at the David Bowie tour and I LOVE IT! It has such a great vibe to it and Gail's music is so beautiful. "This Time" (track 2) is my favorite track. The song is so soothing and I play it in my car all the time on the way to work (and then bring the CD inside so I can listen at my desk). I definitely recommend this album to anyone who knows of Gail or has seen her at a Bowie show. Even if you haven't seen her yet, it is a GREAT buy.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Seventies music shows Aretha influence.......2004-01-04

Natalie has a long and distinguished career behind her but her seventies music, showcased in this collection, is sometimes forgotten. This is especially true in the UK, where Natalie only had one (minor) hit but even in the USA, Natalie's biggest successes came later in her career. Natalie's style back then was clearly influenced by Aretha Franklin. She could rock with the best but was also an excellent R+B ballad singer.

This particular compilation was originally released on the British MFP label but was later re-issued on the Dutch Disky label. With so many classics not charting in Europe, the compilers felt free to ignore some seemingly obvious songs (Inseparable, Mr Melody) although they have included most of the big American hits. Of course, there are other compilations that include the missing hits, but the absence of those hits allows for some quality album tracks and B-sides to be included, which may not be available elsewhere.

Inevitably, this collection of Natalie's seventies music opens with This will be, a top ten American hit that also made the UK top forty, but the rest of this set shows just what Brits missed out on. Oh daddy is a cover of a Fleetwood Mac song from their classic album, Rumours. Among the American hits that failed to chart in the UK, you'll find Sophisticated lady, Stand by, Be thankful and I've got love on my mind.

Natalie's brand of seventies R+B may not have appealed to Brits at the time (perhaps because Natalie didn't go after the disco market) but the music here has a quality that will last forever. If you enjoy seventies R+B, you'll love this collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Classic Natalie.......2000-10-29

Natalie Cole is one of the Greatest talents that i have ever heard.she covers so many styles with such ease&grace.our love,&the title cut are classics from her.she puts so much into her work&it shows.SHe makes it look so easy that i believe people sometimes take her talent for granted.but she is very much the real deal.i have followed her for the longest time.i can't wait to read her book. She is Amazing with all she has overcome.A Great Talent&a very Foxy Lady.

4 out of 5 stars So glad I brought this CD.......2000-09-05

I had almost all of Natalie's stuff on vinyl but years ago I lost my entire collection...I've been trying to rebuild ever since. This CD is a good start. It has many of Natalie's Capitol hits featured on it, songs I remember jamming to when I was a kid. My favorites are "Sophisticated Lady", "This Will Be", "Heaven Is With You", "Can We Get Together Again" and "I've Got Love On My Mind". I was glad to see "Our Love" included, because I really love that song. But it was only the short version, so that was a bit disappointing. I also wish "Just Can't Stay Away" was on this CD as well. That was definitely one of my jams. But this is a very good CD, though. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Rest.......2000-07-11

Natalie Cole could actually have a two-CD Greatest Hits set but this one showcases her earlier work quite well. Many of the hits and favorites are here from This Will Be to I've Got Love On My Mind. Missing, however, are Top 100 hits such as Mr. Melody and Inseparable. But, if you want more of her "hits" you can also purchase The Natalie Cole Collection. If you are a Natalie Cole fan wanting some of her earlier work on compact disc, I would purchase both The Natalie Cole Collection and this fine import - Sophisticated Lady. There are many great things about this compilation, mostly that it contains some hard to find "B" sides and great albums tracks including Joey, Good Morning Heartache, and Unpredicatable You. Unfortunately, it does not have the excellent early "B" sides How Come You Won't Stay Here and La Costa. You'll have to search for those elsewhere. But, the CD certainly makes up for its few omissions with an overall view of Natalie's best earlier work. Just wait until you hear her version of Christine McVie's (Fleetwood Mac) version of Oh Daddy. Wow! This is a must for Natalie Cole fans!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Greatest Hits Package.......1999-10-02

This greatest hits package imported from England is a must have. It contains hits from Natalie Cole's career starting with "This Will Be" and ending with "Stand By." Containing over 70 minutes of music, this CD truly shows Natalie at her best. From the rocking "Touch Me" to "Your Face Stays In My Mind," "Needing You," and the irrestible "You," Natalie shows she was as versertile then as she is today. Also included here are the classics "Our Love," "I've Got Love On My Mind," "Be Thankful," and my favorites "I Love You So," and "Stand By." So if you want to listen to some good classic R&B, order this CD now. You won't be disappointed...I promise.
