Lionel Bart's wonderful musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic was the first London stage musical to be transplanted to Broadway with the same kind of sensation it received in Britain-- something that is now common in these post-Cats/Les Miserables times. Although no one from this British cast ever became enormously famous (future Monkee Davy Jones was in the second Broadway cast)--and Sir Carol Reed's film version receives all the critical accolades--this remains the better recording, featuring all the songs cut from the film, while excluding the film's musical interludes that simply seem annoying without the visuals. Just compare Bruce Brochnik to the film's Mark Lester in the title role. Or Clive Revill to Ron Moody's Fagin. Or any of the principals, for that matter--and the differences are remarkable. --Bill Holdship

4 out of 5 stars Food for Thought - Great for Productions.......2007-07-03

If you are considering a production of Oliver this is a great recording that has good background information. It does skip some of the overture music but the rest of that tracks are well done.

3 out of 5 stars Oliver is a classic and meant to be heard and seen........2007-05-25

Many of these numbers are well known. And the dark tone of the story being told is well represented by the choices made by the actors and their directors. But it IS rough and dark and mournful. Not a road-trip CD, rather a show to see in the theater.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE SIR! I WANT SOME MORE!.......2007-02-27

I starred in my local summer stock company's production of "Oliver," in the summer of 2005. I used this CD to practice learning the musical numbers, by listening to it on my iPod. It has some very memorable numbers such as "Oom-Pah-Pah," "Food, Glorious Food," "Who Will Buy?" "That's Your Funeral," and "Consider Yourself." The one Oliver song that gets on my nerves. But I just can't get enough of most of this music, after the great time I had in the show. I even listen to the soundtrack on airplane trips and car rides sometimes.

2 out of 5 stars Oliver-The Broadway Cast.......2006-03-17

As an original cast member with Florence Henderson's "Sound of Music" tour 45 years ago, I have a unique perspective about this recording. Even the musical director comments at the end that this version of "Oliver" was not particularly well sung but that the cast had a lot of energy.

Unfortunately,(in my opinion) this energy doesn't translate suficiently to the recording and I agree - it's not particularly well sung. Again, from the perspective of a former child performer singing with other kids, it actually is possible for a group of children to sing together and make pleasant-sounding music. The adults in this "Oliver" aren't up to musical snuff either.

Although I haven't heard it, I'd be willing to take my chances on the original London version before settling for this one (which, by the way, was recorded in an LA studio before it even got to Broadway.)

5 out of 5 stars spectacular Broadway album.......2006-02-15

The cast album to the 1963 Broadway premiere production of OLIVER! was actually recorded during the show's pre-Broadway run in Los Angeles. OLIVER! played to subsequent audiences in San Francisco, Detroit and Toronto before opening at the Imperial Theatre in New York on January 6, 1963. The show played 774 performances before prematurely ending the season to play a 9-month national tour, later returning to New York for a `farewell' run of 64 performances.

As she had done to rapturous acclaim in London three years previously, Georgia Brown played the role of Nancy, and earned similar praise for her performance in New York. Her rich, velvet-tinged voice is especially haunting with the chill inducing ballad "As Long As He Needs Me". Composer Lionel Bart wrote "It's a Fine Life" especially for Brown after learning she had been cast in the role in the London production.

Ron Moody had also scored heavily in London with his tour-de-force turn as Fagin, but with producers fearing his portrayal `too ethnic', the role was taken by Clive Revill for the Broadway premiere. Revill had just come from his celebrated role in IRMA LA DOUCE, and his interpretation of Fagin is every bit as valid as Ron Moody's. Bruce Prochnik is a winsome and wistful Oliver, and Michael Goodman is a delight as the Artful Dodger. Wisely-retained from the original London company were a handful of the first-rate supporting players: Hope Jackman's shrill Mrs Corney; and the up-and-coming Barry Humphries as Mr Sowerberry (Humphries would later graduate to playing Fagin before his beloved alter-ego Dame Edna unleashed herself on the world). The promising young belter Alice Playten was smartly-showcased as Nancy's offsider Bet.

But, the sound mix on the Broadway album has always been rather flat and dull, despite being recorded in the stereo format of the day. Voices and orchestra have no vibrancy or depth, and this was due to the studio in which they recorded it, where the ceiling was very low and the sound did not have the necessary acoustic projection. Nevertheless, the recording has a charm and energy which overrides the technical shortcomings.

This new CD reissue from RCA offers some interesting bonus materials including musical director Don Pippin sharing his memories of the show; Barry Humphries performing "That's Your Funeral" (from the London cast album but left off the Broadway album); and a live recording of Patti LuPone singing "As Long As He Needs Me" (LuPone played Nancy in a short-lived Broadway revival in 1986).

Good value.

4 out of 5 stars delightful studio "Oliver!".......2007-04-28

This is the 1962 London studio cast recording of Lionel Bart's OLIVER! The recording--featuring several famous British celebs--is a fantastic rendition of the score.

Alma Cogan, a famed British songstress, plays the role of Nancy; and the part fits her voice like a glove. Dynamic with "It's a Fine Life" and "I'd Do Anything", she also tugs at the heartstrings with a chill-inducing "As Long As He Needs Me". Ms Cogan could--and should--have been one of the leading singers on the world stage, had she not died of ovarian cancer at the age of 36.

Stanley Holloway, star of the Broadway, London and film incarnations of "My Fair Lady", plays the villainous rogue Fagin. He delivers a comic and sly performance with such numbers as "Be Back Soon", and "Reviewing the Situation".

Playing the title role, Denis Waterman sings a tender "Where is Love?". Tony Tanner ably-delivers as The Artful Dodger with a lusty "Consider Yourself". This recording also features the fondly-remembered character actress Violet Carson (who played Ena Sharples on long-running British soap "Coronation Street"), in the role of vile Widow Corney.

On the whole, this rendition of OLIVER! features enough top-drawer talents to help ensure it becomes an often-played title in your collection. Snap it up today!

Ok. I haven't bought this CD, but I've listened to samples and, well, as my title says..........

I would suggest buying the actual movie soundtrack instead. I've seen that movie so many times, it unbelievable. And it sounds good.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the best!.......2001-01-13

My high school is performing Oliver this year. To familiarize myself with the score I purchased all of the Oliver CDs I could find. I came across this one on Amazon.com. The score is brilliantly recorded by the National Symphony Orchestra of England. I wish I could say the same about the vocals. Julian Forsyth does a fine job in the role of Fagin, but Josephine Barstow, who is about 25 years too old for the part, does an amiable job as Nancy. She sounds OK, but she is just not believable, her voice is weak at some points. Richard Van Allan, who plays the villain Bill Sykes, is also just OK. He is trained as an opera singer, and it shows. You don't really hear him being mean or scary on this CD. Both Oliver and Dodger, on this CD, are what takes the ratings down. Both of them cannot carry a tune in a bucket. Also, Dodger sounds like he is twenty years old. It is scary. On top of all this, the numbering of the tracks on the back of the CD are one off for each track, so beware! But don't let me discourage you. This CD is still a pretty complete recording. If you enjoy Oliver go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Oh my goodness, Eran James is a star!!!.......2006-05-10

I have to say, this kid is going places. I saw his music video a year ago on an international sort of music channel, and lucked out enough to have a friend bring this cd back from australia. SO worth the effort! This cd is a classic that everyone should have! I don't usually listen to this type of music, but I was blown away. To this day, it's still one of my top five favorite cd's and the fact that a guy this young can do justice to "I'm so tired of being alone" is even better! Thank you Eran James, you're awesome!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Soul Voice of Eran James........2006-02-08

I discovered this guy in a local music store, did some research and Im impressed by his voice!!! He has that deep Black Soul/Gospel voice at the age of 15,and he knew how to use his pipes wisely. I LOVE this CD and can't stop listening to it. I think Eran James has an incredible voice. I discovered him on IMF (the International Music Feed Channel) and bought this CD and am SO glad that I did. He covers Al Green, the Isley Brothers, James Brown, FatBoy Slim and also sings his own music and has the smoothest sound. His voice is smooth and sexy. His band is amazing also. Buy this CD now!

5 out of 5 stars A brand new never-heard-before Sandie heralding the 80s.......2005-07-14

When Sandie Shaw released this, her fifth original album at the end of 1969, nobody quite knew what to make of it and so was probably for this reason ignored as a career aberration, coming so close after "Monsieur Dupont", her last big hit in the traditional yukky tucky ooopa mode. Sandie in an interview with Goldmine magazine some years ago even denied remembering how she came to record the album. Luckily, her memory has since returned and it turns out that she simply wanted to explore a little bit of the type of music she enjoyed and was more drawn to record in the past but wasn't given the chance to. The result in hindsight is startlingly fresh and impressive, paving the way for her successful comeback in collaboration with the Smiths in the 80s.

"Reviewing The Situation" is experimental and eclectic in the range of material presented, from Lionel Bart to Rufus Thomas to Bob Dylan, Donovan and would you believe it, Led Zeppelin ? Sandie was obviously also partial to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Bee Gees. Remember, by then she had already recorded "Satisfaction" and "Words" for her 1968 album "The Sandie Shaw Supplement".

The album opens with a feisty and energetic performance of "Reviewing The Situation" from the stage musical "Oliver" that suggests maybe Sandie had more range than she was generally given credit for. For at least three other numbers, notably Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay", Donovan's "Oh Gosh" and the Lovin' Spoonful's "Coconut Grove", she lays on her newly acquired light and breathy voice that somehow works and lends a certain poignance and charm to the songs, as does the Bee Gees' "Sun In My Eyes" which displays that attractive low part in her vocal range I love. The Latin-styled "Mama Roux" is an odd thing, not bad but a curiosity, while her slyly soulful and jazzy version of Rufus Thomas' "Walking The Dog" takes time to grow on you.

Good as these performances are, there is little that prepares us for the two songs that elevate "Reviewing The Situation" above the bravely experimental. "Love Me Do" is simply wonderful, a delicious slice of pop that's just right for Sandie. There's clearly more to what suits her than just Chris Andrews songs. Listen to that lilt in her voice at the end of each note. Simply gorgeous. But try suggesting Sandie doing a Led Zeppelin cover in 1969 and you'd be laughed out of court. Outrageous ? Well, that's what she did and the result is stunning. "Your Time Is Gonna Come" is the album's opus on which Sandie puts out an incredibly felt performance. But while she managed to skillfully transcend the heaviness of Led Zeppelin, she was clearly out of her depth on the Stones' "Sympathy For The Devil". Her voice is often reduced to a screech or a yelp on this one misstep in the project.

This EMI reissue comes with two bonus tracks recorded around the time of the original album. "Frank Mills", a song from the musical "Hair" is a lightweight but pleasant number with lyrics that's typical of the late 60s hippy era. "Junk", sung acapella, closes the set on a "lavatorial" note. Listen to it and you'll see what I mean.

"Reviewing The Situation" is the best of Sandie's 60s original albums. It's amazing it ever got made. A must-buy for fans and a revelation for those who think Sandie is all about 60s bubblegum pop

5 out of 5 stars REVIEWING THE SITUATION - Sandie Shaw.......2004-12-02

Set aside for a moment Sandie Shaw's successful and well-deserved early pop-based career and also the fact that she was already one of the most celebrated style icons of the time: `Reviewing The Situation' represents not only a marked departure from Miss Shaw's previous offerings, but also the pinnacle of her post-Eurovision development and is undoubtedly an eminently stylish presentation by an accomplished, consummate and visionary artist. Produced by Sandie herself in 1969, `Reviewing The Situation' follows on from `Love Me, Please Love Me' (1967) and `The Sandie Shaw Supplement' (1968) - (both of which remain outstanding albums and similarly worthy of checking out) and continues to chart her well-founded vocal confidence in tackling more artistically challenging material whilst confirming her credentials as a `serious' musician. On-taking a number of bravely chosen covers (given each composition's respective complexity) contemporary to the time, each track receives Sandie's unique vocal and arranging treatment and whilst certainly evoking memories of the late 1960's, `Reviewing The Situation' stands up easily to scrutiny by the modern discerning listener and benefits greatly from digital re-mastering. By re-issuing this album, EMI have afforded us an undisputed gem and a truly seminal work from that decade.
