5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Collection.......2006-08-16

Yet another compilation on the synth-funk band. However, this one is released to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of SOLAR Records. All the hits are here in their single versions except for the full-length versions of "Body Snatchers", "Hot Spot", "Love Song" and "Scientific Love". Like the Shalamar and Lakeside compilations in this series, the ULTIMATE COLLECTION does a really good job in collecting the most important r&b chart hits of Midnight Star's career. The most disappointing song on this compilation is that tacky remix version of "Freak-A-Zoid" complete with stupid James Brown-like yelps. The original single mix of this classic would have been nice.

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Album Details

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

4 out of 5 stars A good start for your Midnight Star collection.......2006-07-03

If you're looking for a complete Midnight Star collection, there isn't one. Each `greatest hits" compilation has it's own strengths and weaknesses. After much research, I finally choose this "The Best of" compilation as part of my strategy to own the ultimate Midnight Star collection.

Formerly a club DJ in the 80's, I was interested in only album or extended mixes. This CD included what I believe to be album cuts of Scientific Love and Engine No. 9; two must haves rarely found on other compilations. It also includes album cuts of Operator, Midas Touch, Headlines, & Wet My Whistle. Missing from this collection is Don't Rock The Boat and Electricity. One disappointment was the single mix of Freak-a-zoid.

With this CD I'll need to also purchase and download single mp3 extended mix versions of Freak-a-zoid, Electricity, Don't Rock the Boat, and possibly Operator to complete my ultimate Midnight Star collection. The best selling point about this CD is the price. At just $7 it represents a great value!

5 out of 5 stars Paganiniesque (is that a word?).......2003-10-21

O'Connor's virtuoso fiddling on this album is truly remarkable. I've followed his career for nearly twenty years now, and his playing was never better than what is presented here. The caprices are pure genius, combining classical styled arpeggios with rock/jazz/blues based riffs with a little fiddling thrown in for good measure. He even uses the bouncing bow technique (spicatto) in a similar fashion to Paganini's first caprice.

The improvised pieces further display O'Connor's musical brilliance and creativity. Improvisation #4 showcases his mastery of harmonics (no, it's not an electric violin you're hearing) and exagerrated vibrato (fiddlers might call it a shake). The liner notes say that this piece was recorded in one take in a moment of inspiration. Unbelievable!

The weakest cuts on this album in my opinion are the guitar and mandolin/mandocello pieces. When I first saw O'Connor he was playing guitar for the David Grisman Quintet on Austin City Limits. I was dazzled by his ability as a flatpicking virtuoso. It was only after I began collecting DGQ albums and reading up on the members that I discovered that he was known more for his world class fiddling than his picking. Later he came out with the False Dawn album where he composed and performed all of the pieces from a selection of over a dozen instruments. The picking on Midnight On The Water fails to live up to the first class playing he did in the 80s, however. (If you ever get a chance to hear the DGQ album Quintet '80 which is out of publication, or the live DGQ album with Stephane Grappelli you'll hear O'Connor at his best on a Somogyi acoustic guitar). It seems to me that as his focus on pushing the envelope for the violin has increased his focus on the plucked instruments has diminished. It's just as well, I suppose, since he reportedly has had to abandon the guitar and mandolin due to a case of bursitis. Still, the caprices alone are well worth the cost of this CD. We may very well not see the likes of this genius again in our lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance at work.......2003-01-26

Mark O'Connor has long proved himself to be one the greatest and most talented violinists out there, but this affirms that even more. He is an honest virtuoso - when I hear these recordings I am torn between giving up playing (I play the viola - mostly classical though) because I feel I will never have the technical capabilities he has, or running to unpack my instrument and start practicing. He is amazing, and has shown himself again and again as an extremely talented violinist, guitarist, and composer. If you like fiddle music in the least, or never experienced any, then I would definitely recommend this! It is amazing what he showcases on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably One of the Best Violin / Fiddle Recordings Ever.......2001-06-15

I've followed Mark O'Connor's career since his 1976 "A Texas Jam Session" LP and have watched him evolve into one of the best violinists / fiddlers in the business. This album, which represents the kinds of live one-man shows Mark has been performing for over a decade, is probably my favorite of everything he has ever recorded, and it has squarely established his reputation as a performer, improviser, and composer. Mark sounds better than ever, and these are some of his finest compositions, improvisations, and interpretations.

O'Connor's performance of his musically inventive caprices is absolutely hair-raising. His improvised tracks range from pyrotechnic displays to forays into the blues to ghostly explorations of violin timbres. Additionally there is some beautiful guitar playing on this album. Star-Spangled Banner is incredible; Amazing Grace is stirring, and the traditional Midnight on the Water paired with Bonaparte's Retreat makes for a satisfying high point of the album.

The album was nicely produced; the recording sounds as though Mark is standing right in the room with you- Sony Classical obviously put a lot of money into producing this one. The liners are extensive, informative, and even artistic (a Vanderbilt University poet has contributed a poem for each improvisation).

If you like any kind of violin music, fiddle music, or just sheerly virtuosic music, this album's for you. Even people who say they don't usually like fiddle music have fallen in love with this album.

5 out of 5 stars The solo hero.......2000-02-29

Is there anything this man can't do?

After paying tribute to his various sources of inspiration on Heroes - by playing duets with them - O'Connor began a journey into "serious" music. As a composer and performer, Mark O'Connor disappointed me on those early outings, even while I admired and respected his courage to stray from his roots.

It all pays off here. For not only are the master (Paganini) and mentor (Benny Thomasson) here, but all the other heroes as well: Stephane Grappelli, Russ Barenboim, Sam Bush, Vasser Clements, Pinchas Zukerman, to name a few. They've all become Mark O'Connor.

This recording demonstrates maturity in every aspect of O'Connor's craft - as composer, as classical violinist, and as pure fireworks fiddle player. The tone that defines O'Connor (for me) is here, but it shines through the other styles he's absorbed.

The album's title piece is simply the finest O'Connor recorded performance - so far. It pays tribute to Benny Thomasson - a man who felt it was unnecessary to compose new pieces because there were so many undiscovered, unplayed variations on the old ones.

This one's good enough to make you forget to ask "What's next?"

5 out of 5 stars Midnight on the Water.......2000-01-05

Listening to Mark O'Connor playing Midnight on the Water, I was certain I heard the Beloved. And, when it was over and I wasn't sure, I knew it to be so when Amazing Grace captured me. Mark O'Connor understandably speaks of Nicolo Paganini as his inspiration. I would suggest that Sir Paganini is dancing with the angels at this very moment listening to these *amazing O'Connor caprices.*

5 out of 5 stars This group was funky back then! .......2004-10-14

I bought this Midnight Star album several years ago and still love it! One funky song after the next! From Freak-A-Zoid, to Curious, to the very similar songs Wet My Whistle and Midas Touch, this band had it all with their series of hit songs. Loads of funky grooves and the smart balance of modern technology with a live band sound too. Don't Rock The Boat, Headlines, the heavy funk of Operator and Snake in the Grass--nonstop songs that had me dancing! Liked the last song they did live, Slow Jam--yes, they could be kicking it on the ballads too! I hope that this band considers making another album soon, because they could do well with it!

5 out of 5 stars Still a funky album and their best one to me! .......2005-12-12

Midnight Star had their best album in No Parking on the Dance Floor. They made you want to get up and dance! They keep a very live sound among the synthesizers that dominates the music. It is very challenging electro-funk as the opening funk numbers of Electricity and Freak-A-Zoid open the album off with a bang! The title song is rockin'! But the group slows it down on the smooth Feels So Good and Slow Jam, before getting right back to the funk! Slow Jam still gets requests on smooth R&B stations a good 20 years later! The overlooked songs that didn't get as noticed were Night Rider and the funky Playmates. This is a wonderful album here.

5 out of 5 stars MIDNIGHT STARR!! MIDNIGHT STARR!!! MIDNIGHT STARR!!!!.......2003-06-10

5 out of 5 stars Solid Gold old-school synth funk.......2003-04-08

I've had this album for about a year now, and I just had to add my five-star rating to the chorus of approval. I was a wee tiny child when this album was originally released, and I might have never discovered it if it wasn't for a really cool dance/disco radio station (that I can barely pick up!) playing "No Parking on the Dance Floor" (the single) one day when I was driving my car. I swear, my pupils must have dilated and my jaw dropped! I couldn't believe this totally awsome song -- I just HAD to own it. Thanks to the wonder of the internet, I found out that it was by Midnight Star, and based on the positive reviews for the band I decided to order the album, instead of trying to find just the single on an old-school compilation by various artists.

I am SOOO happy that I ordered this!! I listen to it all the time, and nothing makes people get up and shake their [thing] like the more up-tempo songs from this album blasting on your system! As soon as I heard "Electricity," I knew that this album ROCKED. The style is very electro, and many of the tracks feature the "computerized" vocals that only seemed to thrive in the early to mid 80s (which is a crying shame, if you ask me!) If you're one of those people who hates "overly synthesized" funk or R&B, needless to say this album isn't for you. (In addition to the nine members of Midnight Star, a tenth person, Wes Boatman, is credited in the liner notes exclusively for "synthesizer programming.") But trust me, this isn't the ... Debbie Gibson/New Kids On The Block "over produced" synth that was the bane of the late 80s (which I remember all too well.) This album is electro-funk to the core, full of fat beats and innovative funkiness. Of course, since it's so old-school, it's also a happy, positive album, with no swear words or the really juvenile "thug" [stuff] that pollutes the urban music of today. I feel really happy every time I hear this, and the songs are all about 5+ minutes long, real club music, so you can party on and on!

1 out of 5 stars Everything that was wrong with 80s R&B.......2003-02-21

This CD is an example of everything that was WRONG with 80s R&B after about 1983. Synthesizer banging replacing real instrumentation, weak soulless singing, and witless lyrics. Over- Computerized mess like this ran Soul music into a hole that it has only begun to get out of in recent times. If you associate these songs with fond memories if you grew up at the time, you MAY like this. Other than that, if you need a frisbee on your next picnic........

5 out of 5 stars Classic RnB.......2003-02-01

While "Freak-a-zoid" is probably its best known track, "No Parking On The Dance Floor" is an album that smacks of class from start to finish. Undoubtedly Midnight Star was a group with a lot of talent. Containing what I believe are three of the most underrated RnB singers of their time (Watson, Gentry, and Lipscomb), Midnight Star was able to produce an album with all key ingredients in abundance; grinding-groovin'-sweetness. For example, the dance numbers, "Freak-a-zoid" "Electricity" and the title track, are simple in construction, yet wickedly hypnotic with a decidedly "electro" flavour and thudding Zapp-like basslines. The mid-tempo songs are upbeat and thoroughly melodic, "Wet My Whistle" is a great example of laid back Eighties groove.
However, the 'piece de resistance' on this album has got to be "Slow Jam," possibly my favourite duet ever. The chemistry between Lipscomb and Watson is palpable and features the two fantastic vocalists at the top of their game; the melody is unmistakeable, unforgettable, and elevates an already great album into the lofty realms where "classics" dwell.
Only very rarely do groups produce an album where all the ingredients synergise to create something great. No Parking On The Dance Floor was "it" for Midnight Star; awesome vocals, great songs, banging grooves.
