5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-07-04

There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.

Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

5 out of 5 stars Pays music a complement. I love the classical pieces!.......2007-05-27

I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!

5 out of 5 stars the Notebook soundtrack (Audio CD).......2007-05-13

This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-03-30

I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping, emotional standout!.......2007-01-11

The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Rix

4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

The coming-of-age angle in the sports romance movie Love & Basketball is played up by this sharp soundtrack album. The music ranges from Al Green's eternal "Love and Happiness" to galvanizing late-'80s rap classics (Rob Base's "It Takes Two," MC Lyte's "Lyte as a Rock") to some of the best new-school R&B. Angie Stone takes Simply Red's calling card "Holding Back the Years" to church and then back to her softly lit pad, while alt hip-hoppers Black Eyed Peas team with Les Nubians for the atmospheric "Complete Beloved." The disc also boasts the welcome return of ex-Tony! Toni! Tone! frontman Raphael Saadiq with his new partners Dawn Robinson (formerly of En Vogue) and one-time Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad in the band Lucy Pearl. Their "Dance Tonight" is a spirited jam that no doubt plays well in the movie--and definitely does out of it. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD for an equally great movie!.......2006-07-07

The soundtrack to L&B really enhances the coming-of-age feel of the movie. I was about the same age as the characters in the movie when the various songs came out, and experienced many of the same things as Monica and Q. (I actually remember "It Takes 2" playing at one of my 1st college parties!) Pretty much every song on the L&B soundtrack is on point, but my absolute favorites are: "I Like" (Guy); "I Want to Be Your Man" (Roger); "Fool of Me" (Meshell Ndegeocello); and "I'll Go" (Donell Jones). The Donell Jones track in particular always brings a smile to my face - I suppose I just associate it the completely uplifting ending of the movie (and that adorable little girl that played Monica and Q's daughter!)

There is so much good music in the movie that naturally, all of the songs couldn't make it to the CD. "This Woman's Work" (Maxwell)--the to-die-for track that played during Monica and Q's poignant "first time" love scene--is not on the L&B soundtrack album :-( Neither is "Making Love in the Rain," which features Janet Jackson (one of my favorite artists of all time). But, the reality is, not every song that plays in a movie can make in onto a sountrack album. In fact, the missing tracks had the effect of introducing me to a couple of new artists, and new music from artists I already knew, since I had to go hunt down the missing tracks! For example, I found out that the inspirational song that plays while Monica is training her heart out and improving at USC is called "Our Destiny," by Hinda Hicks. To respond to someone who previously asked (I think?), the song is available on a limited-edition EMI archive re-issue of her album "Everything to Me."

In many ways, L&B made many of the soundtrack songs iconic for me. I can't help but think of Monica and Q's touching and steamy love scenes when I hear "This Woman's Work" or "I Like" (respectively), and the final one-on-one game between the two when I listen to "Fool of Me." The latter, in particular, seems like it was made for that final scene. Also, I always remember exactly what I was feeling when those tracks played during the movie, i.e., getting misty-eyed during the 1st love scene and bawling like a baby at the end when Monica and Q embraced after their game ;-) If you liked the movie, you absolutely MUST cop the soundtrack. Even if you've never seen the movie (and you really should!), you should still pick this album up if you like good music and ol skool/nu skool jams. An asset to any CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars amazing soundtrack .......2006-03-03

I can never get sick of this CD! I feel as though it makes me remember songs I didn't even know I loved. The old school tracks are not so hackneyed that you are sick of them, nor so elusive that you don't remember them. Some of my favorites are "You Made a Fool of Me" and the stunning "This Woman's Work" that I can no longer hear without thinking of the infamous love scene from the movie (which by the way is also quite commendable).

Buy it: You won't be disappointed!

Love and Basketball soundtrack...ONE OF A KIND.....BEST movie + soundtrack....Listen out for "I wanna be your man","Holding back the years" and "I'll go", those are my favourites although every song on the album is pretty much on point...100% for this album.

BTW why on earth isnt Maxwell's "This woman's work" on the playlist?....

5 out of 5 stars What I thought as a teen..........2004-05-09

Well in order to have a good soundtrack, has to be based and written with a good movie. When I saw the actually video I had to absoultely get the music. If i were you i would buy the CD and share it with somebody special for that special occasion. It's a great CD to have and to own...but its better if you had the movie to go with it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

Album Description

Remixers, DJs, and Bands from all over the world lend their passion and inspiration to further expand on the already diverse soumd of Collide. From chunky guitar versions, to slithering lounge stylings to delirium-esq versions that are sure to hit the dance floor. This CD also contains three new covers, including the very poinant "The Lunantics are taking over the Asylum" by Funboy 3.

Some very special guests including Charlie Clouser formally of NIN, Rhys Fulber of Conjure One/Delerium and Mike Fisher of Machines and Loving Grace/Amish Rake Fight, lend their talents to "VORTEX". COLLIDE performs an exotic hybrid of Darkwave, Cyber-Dance, and Electronic, with crossover appeal which will appeal to fans of Evanescence, Massive Attack, Curve, Dead Can Dance, Portishead, and Delirium.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18

Simply put, this collection of remixes, and a few artfully selected covers, is the highest quality collection of its kind I've heard.

Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.

I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.

Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.

To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Brilliant!!! .......2007-04-12

Collide must be one of the greatest bands ever to hit the gothic scene. The combination of Karin and Statik are explosive; indeed, Vortex is definitely their masterpiece of Remixes done right! As well as new songs that will demand your attention, highly note worthy!! Some of the best out there!

Listen to the samples on this site just so you can say "Yeah, I'm a smart consumer." If you like any combination of Collide, you're gonna end up buying Vortex, it is most certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Get lost in the Vortex.......2006-10-10

I really liked this album, while some of the songs are remixed more than once they're still able to keep a semblance of uniqueness. Then there are the little gems added to the mix "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" and "Feed Me to the Lions" are really fun songs that quickly moved their way into my top 10 lists.

These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome find!.......2006-08-20

You will all think I'm crazy, but I was looking for new music one day at work, came across Collide because it was "similar" to other music I like, and bought it without even hearing it! I wasn't somewhere that I could listen to the samples, so I trusted other user reviews, and couldn't be more pleased. This CD has become a staple in my collection, and frankly, hasn't left my CD changer yet! My boyfriend even added it to his iPod. My personal favorite is "The Lunatics...", don't ask me why. I always play it on my way to the gym...and sometimes before work...perhaps it's something Freudian. :)

I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.

Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).

5 out of 5 stars remixed to perfection.......2006-07-06

before picking up this two-disc package, i was not familiar with the works of Collide. i bought this item on a whim, and am very glad i did. the variety of style approach is refreshing, you really don't hear the same song twice, though there are a few mixes of a few songs. these are good cds to put in on a trip or chill at the house, and i've had the album for a few weeks now and am not tired of it. enjoy the haunting effects of a great band rearranged by great artistic minds.

Hailing from California, Berlin's early music was flavored with early '80s Europop. At the end of their career, the original lineup fragmented, and the band changed musical directions so completely, it rendered the group nearly invisible. Love Life fell in the middle, and represents Berlin's career peak, musically and commercially. Pop rock sex kitten Terri Nunn keeps it quiet during most of the album. Ballads "When We Make Love" and "For All Tomorrow's Lies" hover in a dreamy perk. Chart topping finale "No More Words" is an unforgiving rage channeled through Nunn's powerful pipes. --Beth Bessmer

excellent quality, fair price, quick delivery, was extremely satisfied to receive this very hard to find cd, thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Defining 80's Album.......2006-12-30

I am sure that I was one of many teenage boys who picked this album up and absolutely fell in love with Terri Nunn.

This album is sexy, fast, and exciting. Like driving with your girlfriend in a MGB convertible with the top down on a warm summer night.

Terri's voice is the only instrument that you really hear (or remember). But if you go back and analyse the songs (which I do not suggest), the sound is New Wave formula but very original and clear compared to the next Berlin album, "Count, Three and Pray".

This is the best Berlin album, period. But then I am quite partial to "Dancing in Berlin" as you would be if Terri had grabbed you to dance with her on stage to the song. During the concert Terri also sang a cover of "Suffragette City" which was incredible. I wish it was available somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Hitting the mark.......2006-06-08

With their second album, Berlin started to hit their stride. The production on "Love Life" has grown up a lot since "Pleasure Victim", and we are in full MTV-friendly territory. Now it may sound like a criticism when a band lose their edge and start sounding mainstream, but Berlin need to mature a bit from their first album, and this one does a fine job of it. The opening track "When We Make Love" is so good that it's almost too tough an act to follow. Soaring and swooping vocally, and with a strong rocky/synth backing, it sets a great energetic mood for the rest of the album. Sadly, the second track quickly became my least favourite as it sounded like a failed attempt to match the power of the opener. Luckily the third song "Beg Steal or Borrow" knows better and follows a slow tempo, with the result that this is much more fun. Then we come to "Now It's My Turn", which finally makes a fitting challenger to "When We Make Love", as it's a terrific rock song with a very bitter theme centered around revenge. But even this is topped, further down the list after a few light-weight tracks, by "In My Dreams", which to me is the most perfect Berlin pop-song - beautifully gloomy in mood and tune, and another dark theme lyrically.

Terri Nunn once again excels at wringing anger and bitterness out of the lyrics, the songwriting of the group really suits her singing style, and her later solo album was diluted by it's absence. The albums hit single "No More Words" makes good use of her vocal prowess - it's another anger-tinged number, although the backing music is a bit lightweight compared to some of the stronger album tracks.

This is a great album, and it's made even better by the inclusion of two B-sides that were not on the original vinyl - "Rumour of Love" (ok this is poor, and Terri does not sing on it) and "Lost in the Crowd" ( which is good - strong enough to stand beside the better album tracks). It's even got a great classy cover shot! So it looks and sounds wonderful in any collection.

4 out of 5 stars Polished second album for Berlin.......2004-02-21

Love Life finds Berlin honing their brand of upbeat synth New Wave into something more polished, and it's an improvement, although there aren't any songs that are risque as their notorious single from Pleasure Victim.

The raciest song by far is the leading one, "When We Make Love," from the POV of a stripper or performer in a risque act, or maybe a starlet in a triple-X movie. If it's the latter, that's quite a twist, as she labels the viewer as her fantasy. I detect influences from Blondie's "Atomic" here.

The extramarital affair on "Touch" tells it from the woman's POV, where she learns that her date's married, and asks him if he'll remember her, only not to hear from him. The casualness of the affair is given when she says "You can take me home and tear my clothes off." The rapid-fire synths and blaring guitar is something Quarterflash would appropriate on "Walking On Ice" on their Back Into Blue. One of the best songs here. A similar tempo and sound can be found on "Pictures Of You"

"Beg, Steal Or Borrow" is notable for having a synth rhythm which may have been taken from "Boogie Shoes" with a rhythm guitar like "Every Breath you Take."

Another standout tune comes with "Now It's My Turn." What does Nunn have to say about a lover who's deserted here: "Now it's my turn/You hurt me then/I'll never let you hurt me again." A further warning to the perpetrator: "Don't think you'll get away/The pain has just begun." This was included on their greatest hits album.

Giorgio Moroder's association with Berlin began here, as he and Richie Zito produced two songs. The first is "Dancing In Berlin" on the divisions between mysterious Communist East Berlin and open and free-spirited West Berlin, including the line "Please, there's no wall in front of you." The other is the Top 30 single "No More Words" featuring a funky bass synth backbeat while louder keyboards and electric guitars snarl. The concept of all words but no action backing those words leads to the title being sung, followed by "you're telling me you love me while you're looking away." Nunn sings of "looking for a long romance/not a picture of passion or one time chance."

"Rumor Of Love" is notable in its being sung by one of the male members of the band, and his delivery along with the rhythm section makes this like a Cars song.

The shakiness of people in love is behind the bittersweet and cynical "For All Tomorrow's Lies." Although the song extols pairs to stay together as one, but things aren't that easy: "They tell you 'try to have hope.'/And fight for all you can/these words, you've heard them before/so easy to believe." The version included on their greatest hits is a ballad remix that matches the gloominess of the song, and not the upbeat synth version here.

"Fall" is a low-tempo number of coming alive in love. The guitars here echo the sound Berlin would encompass in Count Three And Pray. The frantic, giddy tempo of "Lost In The Crowd" rounds out the album and it rivals the tempo of "Touch." It too, has the same hard guitar of "Fall" while remaining true to its New Wave sound.

The definitive Berlin sound is demonstrated here, with the last two songs a hint of things to come. Before that, Berlin would emulate Genesis, read "And then there were three." Guitarists Dave Diamond and Ric Olsen would leave, as would keyboardist Matt Reid leaving behind original members Terri Nunn and John bassist/synth-man Crawford, and Robert Brill (drums). All they had to was count three and...pray.

4 out of 5 stars Berlin's Best.......2004-02-03

After seeing Berlin on VH1's "Band's Reunited," I had to dig through my old tapes to see what I had on this great band. As it turns out, I had "Pleasure Victim" and this album, "Love Life."

I put on "Love Life" and was amazed at how good the music still sounded. It's hard for me to believe this album and its predecesor were released 20+ years ago; it still sounds fresh! And Terri Nunn's voice... man, I was reminded what a great voice she had. On every song, from the pop hits ("No More Words") to the ballads ("Fall), her voice is picture perfect.

Speaking of "Fall," I'd have to say this has become my favorite song on the album. It's not a song that many people single out on this album, but I feel it deserves merit. John Crawford's lyrics flow like poetry when sung by Terri Nun:

"Colors all around;
Smile, cry, then laugh out loud
Feel the autumn breeze
Come alive..."

But now I see it's out of print??!! C'mon. Well, at least there are some good deals on Amazon.com out there as far as used CDs are concerned.

If you've never heard Berlin before, this is a good album to start out with. You'll get hits like "No More Words," "For All Tomorrow's Lies," "Dancing in Berlin," and "When We Make Love," as well as hidden gems like "Fall." Whether you're in an 80's mood or just want something "new" to listen to, this is a great place to start.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Remember great soundtracks?.......2006-08-06

Seems like for the better part of the 1990s soundtracks were "the" in thing in music.

This was another one.

If you like any of the following in a great soundtrack, cop this one:
1) Music put on the LP that you actually recognize from the original motion picture.
2) A hot mix of contemporary, popular artists consistent with the time of the movie's release.
3) A nice number of contributions from budding, unhyped new artists that actually help make the soundtrack complete.
4) An overall musical selection that fits the tone of the movie.

Thin Line was a classic movie released my freshman year of college (1996) and every time I listen to this soundtrack it takes me back to that time.

That's a signature of great music, period.

Songs to check for on this soundtrack:

--Tevin Campbell's cover of Stevie Wonder's timeless love jam "Knocks Me Off My Feet"

--H-Town's soulful remake of the title track

--"Damned If I Do (Damned if I Don't)" by Something for the People

--"Just Beware of My Crew" by LBC which captures that '90s West Coast sound

--R. Kelly's "Freak Tonight"

And of course D'Angelo's masterpiece "Brown Sugar" (you already know!)

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Listening.......2006-01-17

I had to step and put my 5 in here, after seeing overall the Soundtrack received 3 stars. This is an EXECELLENT soundtrack with a variety of different types of songs. It has R&b, Hip hop, rap, smooth soul... I mean it's very well produced. My fav song is Tevin Campbells' "Knocks Me Off My Feat" (a beautifully intimate song about love and the imagination of love) and "Lets Stay Together" by Eric Benet' but the entire cd is great and I don't see how it could hve been any better. This is most definitely a classic! It still in heavy rotation with me.

4 out of 5 stars Love It Or Hate It.......2005-05-24

This soundrack from 1996 has some to love and some to hate. L.B.C. Crew started the soundtrack off well with the Zapp sample "Beware Of My Crew". Somethin' For The People came with a smooth track on relationships featuring Adina Howard to add to the effects of it. "Freak Tonight", a mid-tempo, bounce by R. Kelly was slept on as it may very well be the reason to purchase A Thin Line Between Love & Hate. The laid back gangsta groove by Soopafly tells us with a more lyrical, gangster twist of hardness. Ganjah K's "Love Got My Mind Trippin'" is okay at best, but nice to listen to. The best rap song on here is by the underdog Dru Down as he shows us he's a "Playa Fo Real". Roger Troutman brought another classic with the slow, seductive and nasty "Chocolate City". Eric Benet and Sandra St. Victor both delivered love tunes to make it altogether worthy. Don't be dissappointed you don't have to buy this new! But there's something on here you need to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Nice album.......2004-09-23

Honestly I only like maybe 5 tracks on this album. The opening song is tight, there is a lil variation between it and the version in the film. Come Over by Sandra St. Victor is hands down the best song on the album. My favorites: 1, 2, 4, 9, 10, 11, 13-15. Tevin Campbell's song is alright.

Okay, so maybe I like more than 5 tracks! I only got the album for the first song, but it really surprised me and I'm glad to add it to my collection.

2 out of 5 stars it's ok at best.......2003-10-06

the only reason why I was interested in this soundtrack was because of R.Kelly's "Freak Tonight" that Sampled Mtume's "Juicy Fruit".it works pretty good for the track.but for the most part this SOundtrack is pretty forgettable just like the film.
