Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply...one of the 5 all-time greatest male Soul singers.......2005-11-07

Despite not having any national hits, Don Varner's records and voice puts him up on the same level as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and Percy Sledge. The first time you hear "More Power To Ya'", "Down In Texas", "Masquerade" or "Tear Stained Face" will make you fall out of your chair.

This CD contains 23 absolutely perfect 1960's Soul classics....truly amazing.

Just so you know....his recordings were made in Alabama by the same team that produced Percy Sledge's Atlantic sides.

Give this CD a try...you'll love as much as I do.

The only negative thing is that half of the tracks were mixed in stereo on both the 5 UK Charly LP's of the 1980's, as well as the 4 US Overture CDs. (The series were called "Rare Soul From The Quinvy/Broadway Sound Studio", featuring Varner, Tony Broders, Bill Brandon, Eddie Bradford, and Z.Z. Hill.)
