A bit of soul, a bit of folk, done with lots of warm jazzy touches. Strings and horns are very strong in the instrumentation with vocals compressed, floating along the pulse.. creating a sound that's compelling.

5 out of 5 stars The True United Future of Music Is Here... (Sorry, OM Records).......2006-09-19

This album has been, and will likely continue to be overlooked by the music community as a whole. But, as frustrating as it can be for us serious music listeners to watch an album so good sit in the bargain bin at your local Amazon.com or record store, it means those who do stumble onto it will be one of a chosen few. Although I realize people have extremely varying tastes in music, its still hard for me to comprehend how anyone could find anything wrong with this EP. This IS what I would consider neo-soul... if you'd describe neo-soul as new style soul, electronic soul, or, as I would prefer to describe this album - future soul.
With that said, "Michael and The Force" is extremely danceable, and should have followed with remixes by Basement Jaxx, Soft Pink Truth, Ben Watt, etc. Regardless, the most dissapointing part of this EP is the fact that it is an EP. Every track is a pure standout. Order a copy for yourself or risk missing out on the best underground EP in recent memory. Now we just need a full album!

5 out of 5 stars amazing original music..........2005-03-24

They have good musical vibes, excellent lyrics that are deeply spiritual and make you think and a really nice lead singer. Hard to put them in any one category to be honest... just good music. If you're into good independent music and powerful lyrics, I'd say you'd be glad to own this album.

1 out of 5 stars YUCK, AWFUL, UGHHHH.......2005-02-16

THIS CD IS AWFUL. IT'S NOT JAZZ, ITS NOT NEO SOUL. IT IS JUST GARBAGE. THERE IS A MUSIC WEBSITE CALLED WWW.DUSTYGROOVE.COM. THEY HAVE THIS CD LISTED AS NEO SOUL. IT IS NOT NEO SOU. JUST NEO GARBAGE. I DONT KNOW WHAT THE VIEWER WAS THINKING GIVING THIS CD 5 STARS. HE OR SHE MUST NOT HAVE TASTE IN MUSIC AT ALL. I DIDNT WANT TO GIVE THIS CD 1 STAR.

I simply love this group. I don't know a thing about them but I bought their demo and as soon as I learned that had another CD out a bought it as well. You will not be disappointed. The singer has the most wonderful voice and the songs are so melodic and smooth and just wonderful. Can't suggest you get it enough!!!!!

Newly remastered from a Voice of America mono off-line aircheck, one hears more detail and ambiance here than in previous reissues of this controversial performance taped live at Carnegie Hall April 6th, 1962. The conductor's infamous "disclaimer" disassociating himself from Glenn Gould's slow tempi is preserved along with a snippet from an interview in which Gould defends both his interpretation and Bernstein's actions. The first movement starts slow, but insidiously speeds up to a tempo not far from the norm. Flickering in and out of Bernstein's turgid orchestral backdrop, Gould downplays the music's fiery intensity, seeking to emphasize its meditative qualities and contrapuntal implications. If Sony wanted to issue a Gould Brahms D- Minor, why not the more incisive, and far better-engineered October 1962 Baltimore version? --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Gould beatified! Sanctification next?.......2007-05-03

With the re-engineered release of this 1962 recording, operatives of the Holy See have finally been enabled by Providence to determine that the noises in the background, previously assumed to be coughs and groans, were indeed snores. With this knowledge in hand, papal legates have searched for survivors of the historic concert and located two who remember precisely snoring during the occasion. Both were lifelong insomniacs, for whom doctors had given up all hope, yet both found themselves lulled into deep slumber, attributing their MIRACULOUS cure to Master Gould's profound lento. Another such intercession would surely qualify Gould for sainthood.

4 out of 5 stars Leonard Bernstein and Glenn Gould square off.......2006-11-10

I heard about this recording from a radio piece on NPR and immediately felt I had to have it. It is a unique piece of history. There is the introduction Bernstein gave the audience explaining why he almost refused to conduct the concerto, and an equally enlightening interview with Gould himself. Then there is Gould's unique interpretation. Whether or not you prefer a more traditional interpretation is no matter, this one is still worth owning alongside your own.

5 out of 5 stars GOULD...ONCE AGAIN I FALL IN LOVE..........2006-11-03

Once again Gould takes us to another dimension.
His version is absolutely romantic and unique.
Always the musical establishment fails in how to recognize real talent!! Having this version dieing for more than 25 years, is a clear prove of that...

5 out of 5 stars TRAGICALLY, ONLY OF HISTORICAL INTEREST..........2006-06-19

Yes, and it pains me to say so: this recording is of historical interest only. The realization is great: GG is a genius of art, and a wonder of digital ability. Lenny and the NY Phil are good as well. The problem is that the microphone used for the live broadcast from which this recording was made was placed away from Gould and his piano, and way out in the auditorium above the audience. GG is almost literally drowned out by the idiotic-tubercular-spazmotic audience which hacks away, choking and spewing, during Gould's most exquisite piano solos. (Although I must say that at the end of the performance, that same audience gave GG a rousing standing ovation.)

Lenny Bernstein was cool, as was the NY Phil. The whole rhubarb over Gould's reading was created by media journalists who got paid by the penny-word: stupid, inane cretins frightened by Art. What a waste of artistic time! Afterwards at the cocktail party following this performance, Lenny told Gould, "You played so beautifully in the cadenza that I almost c**e in my pants [!]" (as cited in Bazzana, Wondrous Strange: the Life and Art of Glenn Gould).

It's really a shame that a decent recording wasn't made miked close to Gould's piano. What a loss for Art!

4 out of 5 stars Mainly for historical reasons.......2006-04-08

Love it or hate it, the main reason for the release is for historical reasons. The performance, and especially Bernstein's pre-performance remarks, caused a huge controversy in the press, and the story has been relayed ever since.
This recoding, and the excellent liner notes, correct a lot of misconceptions: Gould was in favor of Bernstein's remarks; Gould's interpretation is no longer considered exceptionally slow by today's standards (meaning the Gould must have had some effect on a few of today's artists). It is fascinating to hear what all the commotion was about.
The most interesting part is that the critics fared the worst in the judgement of time: the critic from the New York Times absolutely seems ridiculous (in his review that was written in the form of a letter to an imaginary friend!) with his snide remarks that come off as a cranky senior citizen criticizing the youngsters on the stage. And the fact that so many other newspapers picked up the story as if it was a boxing match.
Reagrdless of recording quality (originally meant to be a mono radio broadcast), this is a fascinating performance that documents a very interesting concert in the history of an American conductor and orchesetra, and deserves this wide release. It shouldn't be the only recording of this Brahms concerto you should have, but it should sit right next to it.

5 out of 5 stars Live Klemperer Treasure from 1968.......2006-06-27

This extraordinary set of live Klemperer performances should be in the collection of everyone who cares about Klemperer and his marvelous style of music making. Massive and often slow but always vital and alive, they will not appeal to everyone. But it is astonishing how these CDs bring into sharp focus Klemperer's real magnetism on the podium. As good as his EMI recordings are, they are so very much the product of the recording studio one can be forgiven for wondering whether they represent what Klemperer was in fact capable of achieving in live performance, particularly near the end of his career when his various physical disabilities became almost overwhelming impediments to performance. Somehow, almost miraculously, Klemperer put it all together for a few weeks in the late Spring of 1968 in Vienna to produce truly incandescent performances. Not note perfect by any means, this is music making nevertheless for the ages. I suppose the Mahler 9th comes closest to failure as it offers some of the most ragged playing in the set. (According to the excellent liner notes, some of that can be attributed to Klemperer but more to the orchestra's unfamiliarity with Mahler's last great symphony and even downright hostility to Mahler's music in general.) But in the end that raggedness doesn't matter at all. Klemperer's trademark qualities as conductor are very much present in the Mahler as in all these performances: clarity of polyphonic texture; structural integrity; overall rhythmic coherence (even if ensembles are a bit 'shaky' at times). I was particularly moved by the performances of Bach and Mozart -- the 'Jupiter" symphony is positively incandescent -- as well as by the Bruckner Fifth which is, hands down, the greatest performance of that symphony I have ever heard, live or on record. But all these performances are well worth hearing again and again in spite of their foibles. All performances from the 1968 series are in good quality stereo sound; the single mono recording, a very decent-sounding performance of the Brahms German Requiem, is taken from a Klemperer concert in Vienna about ten years earlier. I don't recommend this set to the 'note perfect' crowd or to anyone who has a fixed idea about what is the "best" recording of the Beethoven Fifth or Mahler Ninth. But if you are prepared to hear the 'thoughts' of an old man who has struggled with this music all his life, for whom this music meant more than anything else on earth and for which he was willing to push himself past pain and infirmity for one last encounter, then I think you will be moved and enriched by this priceless set.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag, But Much Pleasure.......2003-10-19

This set is a curious 4-CD collection, containing a lot of Beethoven sonatas, recorded in 1949, Bach suites and inventions recorded in 1950, and Schumann recorded in 1951. Disc 1 is all Beethoven, disc 3 is all Bach, disc 2 is mostly Schumann, with 2 Beethoven sonatas at the end, and disc 4 is about half Bach, and half Hammerklavier Sonata, (perhaps the most jarring transition on the set, both musically and sonically!). The playing by Gieseking is characteristically excellent, always perfectly suited to the composer at hand, always insightful, spontaneous and surprising. The sound could be better, and the discs are possibly too full (74-78 min. each), but there is a lot here to like and get to know.

            4 out of 5 stars Guido Cantelli -- A Testament to Greatness.......2004-02-28

The Testament label has generally been associated with high quality reissues of classic mono and stereo performances languishing in the EMI or Decca vaults. However, this 4CD set featuring Guido Cantelli's NBC Broadcast Concerts (from December 1949 and January 1950) is something altogether new. Sure Testament has rescued many of Cantelli's vintage studio recordings from obscurity, introducing him to a generation of classical listeners not even born when the conductor tragically died at the age of 36 in 1956. But this partnership with the Estate of Guido Cantelli will provide connoisseurs with rare recordings for years to come, as many more releases are planned for the future.

But let's get to the title at hand. There are three things that I love about this set. First, because Cantelli left us with so few studio recordings, just hearing him play more music in the first place is a miracle. Second, many of the works featured here are earlier accounts of pieces he later did record in the studio -- Hindemith's Mathis Der Maler, and Mozart's 29th and Beethoven's 7th Symphonies in this case. It is delightful to experience Cantelli's multiple accounts of these works, something we take for granted with conductors like Furtwangler, Bernstein or Karajan. Finally, it is great to hear Cantelli tackle such diverse material with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, from Bach, Handel and Haydn to Stravinsky and Hindemith.

With that being said, there are also three things that keep me from giving this set a fifth star. First, the mono sound is very good, but certainly will not be of a high enough quality to please everyone. Second, each disc has been structured to include one day's broadcast performance, for example the four featured here are December 24 & 31, 1949 and January 7 & 14, 1950. The unfortunate result of showcasing each day on its own disc is that they each log in at (comfortably) under an hour. In fact, the broadcasts are short enough to squeeze this set on to three discs, but of course performances from different days would overlap on a given disc. Which brings me to my third and final point, when paying full-price times four discs for this title, surely many of us (yours truly included) would rather pay less and deal with combined sessions on only three discs.

In all, though this is a welcome release and I look forward to the issue of Cantelli NBC Broadcasts from later in the 1950s. In this era of homogenized collections, it is essential for a label like Testament to continue to save the future of classical by rescuing great music from the past.
