The real deal is that this is not so much a hits package as a hyped collection of songs that made the charts, album tracks, and rarities like Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pipeline" duet with surf-rock king Dick Dale. (At least SRV completists no longer have to buy the God-awful Back to the Beach soundtrack.) Blending blues classics, rockers, and instrumentals was a signature of Vaughan's sets, but it doesn't work for these 16 tunes. Lesser numbers like "Empty Arms," "Shake for Me," and "Wall of Denial" seem filler between thrillers like "Telephone Song," "Scuttle Buttin'," and a version of "Leave My Girl Alone" that had been available only on a promotional CD. Remember, Vaughan's recording career lasted seven years--too short a time to merit two hits discs. Yet his guitar acrobatics and gut-deep vocal testimonials are never less than satisfying. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:

Two greatist hits were then released. This is Vol.2 you'd assume to get lackluster songs not quite as big as the glowing presence of Vol.1.If that is what you're guessing you're off(WAY OFF).Overall i think this is a much better interpratation of Mr.Vaughans true capabilities."Scuttle Buttin'" is a fast and short song resulting in an almost Van Halen "Eruption" solo feeling.Stevies accesability to make a song his own shows in a Jimi Hendrix song"Voodoo Chile"(later shown in 2001's "Black Hawk Down")as he did with The Beatles "Taxman" on the first vol..
Mr.Vaughans vocals are raspy and low and energetic. If you ever seen him live you'd know how much soul he poured into each performance. His beat up guitar is a trade mark. You will be able to hear this aura in the live tracks like "Shake For Me" and "Superstation".A crowd favorite "Lenny" is on the album, but not live.
Sixteen of Mr.Vaughans amazing songs shine hear and is worth more then what is asked for.

The Isleys Coasting.......2007-07-02
The previous album GRAND SLAM (also 1981) took longer than the previous eight albums to reach "gold" status. So on INSIDE YOU, the Isleys tried to reinvent themselves by incorporating lush string arrangements into their clavinet/guitar solo funk formula. For the most part, it works, especially on the title tune, the Doobie-ish "Baby Hold On", the lush Stylistics-like ballad "Don't Hold Back Your Love", and "Love Zone" in which Ernie's guitar soars above a comfy bed of strings. However, the pop leanings fall flat on "First Love", the soggy "Welcome To My Heart", and "Love Merry Go Round", a good idea that somehow fails to catch fire. INSIDE YOU stalled at #45 on the Billboard pop album chart, the Isleys first non-top 40 album since 1971's GIVIN' IT BACK.
After that pop/funk experiment failed, the Isleys brought the funk back to the forefront in 1982's THE REAL DEAL. The title track and "Are You With Me?" incorporate some Gap Band influences in the mix, while those darn strings rear their ugly head in the poppy "It's Alright With Me". "All In My Lover's Eyes" is well-sung but features lazy lyrics, while Ernie's guitar saves the funky "Stone Cold Lover" and the bluesy closer "Under The Influence". This album crawled to #87 on the Billboard Pop Charts.
After the failure of these albums, the Isleys came back with 1983's platinum BETWEEN THE SHEETS. These albums aren't the best representation of the Isley catalog, but they have their moments.

A fun mix.......2007-06-22
This album is a nice mix of several more obscure swing bands, and the songs are a good range of styles and material. If you enjoy swing, this CD should be satisfying. I bought it on a whim and have enjoyed it. Some highlights to watch out for: "Ruby Mae" by Indigo Swing, where the talented musicians from that now-defunct band create the musical sound of riding the rails on a cross-country train, and "Tossin' and Turnin'" by the Cigar Store Indians, a rockabilly romp reminiscent of Brian Setzer when he was still with the Stray Cats.
Indigo Swing's stuff is still available too, and is great. Their latter two albums, "All Aboard" and "Red Light!" are well worth a listen--or several. Enjoy :)

Silvertone Records has done a smart job of resurrecting Buddy Guy's career. When the label signed the Chicago blues guitar master in 1990, the 54-year-old legend hadn't had an American release in nine years. Silvertone introduced him to a new audience by having him play duets with such rock-star admirers as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Jeff Beck on the 1991 album, Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. In 1996 the label unleashed the hardcore Buddy Guy stretching out on vintage blues numbers in a live setting on Live! The Real Deal. The payoff is not only a terrific blues album but also an album built on the kind of financial foundation that will insure many more to come. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Good. Almost great.......2004-08-26
Guy's playing is strong and focused almost all the way through, and he gets superb backing from former Chuck Berry-pianist Johnnie Johnson, whose solo on the T-Bone Walker-like "I've Got News For You" is one of several instrumental highlights. Guy plays rhythm and lead guitar equally well (some blues guitarists, like B.B. King, literally can't play a chord), his voice is still powerful in spite of his advancing years, and he plays excellent renditions of "I've Got My Eyes On You", "Damn Right I've Got The Blues", "Let Me Love You Baby", and the Elmore James-single "Talk To Me Baby" in particular.
"Live - The Real Deal" may not be perfect (Guy's slightly erratic vocals are sometimes too low, something which should have been corrected in the mix), but it does show what an excellent guitar player that Buddy Guy is. It also features some of his best songs in good or even great live renditions, and if you're a fan of Chicago blues, you'll probably enjoy this album. If you're a fan of Buddy Guy you're almost sure to.

Rough-hewn Texas treasure Billy Joe Shaver is something like that old chunk of coal he once wrote about--except his "diamond" already shines through. On this self-produced effort, his first new studio release in three years, he strips things down to the basics in mostly acoustic arrangements that sometimes recall Hank Williams Sr. at his starkest and most vulnerable. The material--alternately heartbreaking ("Livin' a Lovin' Lie") and outrageously earthy ("If the Trailer's Rockin' Don't Come Knockin'")--cuts a wide path, including two reworked numbers: a hot-wired version of "Live Forever" with Big & Rich, who, led by Big Kenny, sail into an evangelistic romp near the end; and an invigorated solo rendition of "Jesus Christ Is Still the King." Shaver has been to hell and back on a pack horse in the last six years--his wife died after a long bout with cancer; his blazingly talented guitarist son, Eddy, died of a drug overdose; and his own health was threatened. But what a comeback, steeped in his faith in the Almighty and his own power of resurrection. The evidence is here in abundance. "Slim Chance and the Can't Hardly Playboys," a vocal collaboration with Kevin Fowler, showcases Shaver's renewed sense of humor, while "Valentine," an affecting duet with Nanci Griffith, does as much as his recent wedding to spotlight his belief in romance as redemption. There's not much to quibble with here, unless you're a grinch who wants to gripe about Shaver's meandering sense of pitch, his way of sometimes circling around a note before he finally lands. But if you are, there's a bonus track here for you--a sprightly accordion-laced version of "Feliz Navidad" with Flaco Jimenez. This is "The Real Deal," all right. And then some. --Alanna NashAlbum Description
It seems like Billy Joe Shaver's experienced everything a musician can--except that he has never self-produced an album. So Shaver hunkered down in a Pedernales, Texas, studio to record 14 out of 16 new tracks for The Real Deal. He explains, "It was great to be able to sing the way I want to sing. I could set up the arrangements how I wanted rather than having to fit someone else's." He was also joined by old and new friends, including the country superstar duo Big & Rich, who co-produced their duet with Shaver on his inspirational masterpiece "Live Forever." According to Big Kenny from the duo, "Shaver is a classic poet and a songsmith...the kind of person you can listen to for hours, with a spirit and soul that grabs your attention." The duet marks the first time the double platinum duo has recorded an outside song. Others who joined Shaver included Nancy Griffith (who sang on the song "Valentine"), Kimmie Rhodes ("West Texas Waltz"), Flaco Jimenez ("Feliz Navidad"), and Kevin Fowler ("Slim Chance and the Can't Hardly Playboys"). The album also contains Shaver's fervent reminder about the power of persistence, "Try and Try Again." The Real Deal follows the well-received Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver: Live, which featured such friends as Robert Earl Keen, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Guy Clark, Todd Snider, Cory Morrow, Bruce Robison, and Kelly Willis, among others. Shaver is truly one of the most respected living figures in American music today. Johnny Cash called him "my favorite songwriter." (He has written for Cash as well as Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, the Allman Brothers, and Bobby Bare.) The Washington Post noted that "when the country outlaws were collecting their holy writings, Billy Joe Shaver was carving out Exodus."Customer Reviews:

The songs are sharp. The lyrics are just daggers. The mood they create are stunning. "No Fool Like An Old Fool", "Livin' and Lovin" Lie" and "Just Ain't There For Me" will be classics!! The music and the emotion just make you stop and listen and become one with these songs.
The opener with Big and Rich is a nice step away for BJS. I've heard some complaints. I personally like ""Gonna Live For Ever". Great tune with a cool message. Might bring BJS to the mainstream fame he deserves!
There are even a couple of raunchy-ish songs on this offering. NICE!!!
Really..This is a 10 Star cd.

Album Description
The commercial and critical success of the "old-time"/bluegrass-drenched music in the 2000 movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou," its "Down from the Mountain" tour-film spin off, and recent "Cold Mountain" blockbuster proved that millions of Americans were eager to connect to their country's musical roots. This second solo CD by Tim Eriksen, already a burgeoning cult figure as one of the leading U.S. traditional folk balladeers, should be their next focus.Eriksen, featured vocalist on three "Cold Mountain" songs and arranger of two "shape note" songs on the soundtrack, sees music as a link between the past and present and between individuals and communities, which has led him to the ten traditional American folk ballads he reanimates here and the four haunting original compositions that comprise this view of pre-20th Century life and its 21st Century resonance. Tim brings sounds of the American past into the "now," starting with the first track, an original a cappella salute to sunrise in the strong, brave tenor voice that has won him awe. He follows with chilling accounts of the Civil War, the lament of a traveling preacher (one of two songs utilizing harmonic, "overtone" singing that imitates the buzz of nature), murder ballads, and sprinkles in a pair of instrumentals. Tim's has a scholar's instinct for uncovering obscure, often unrecorded folks songs, and his liner notes give a fascinating insight into their history and his own sensibilities. Tim's two other compositions are "A Tiny Crown," a tale of imagination, reality and sea monkeys, and the eerie, hovering title song.
Using the same minimal, live-in-the-studio technique as on his first CD, Tim performs alone here, cycling between guitar, banjo, and fiddle without overdubs, an approach in keeping with the direct connection between Tim, his music and his listeners.
Customer Reviews:
Another starkly gorgeous CD from one of the great ones.......2004-08-04
As usual, Tim's voice is arrestingly intense, sometimes even desperate, but always with that deadpan Appalachian affect that conveys a kind of weather-beaten optimism. And as usual, his guitar and banjo playing are intricate, driving, sometimes hypnotically repetitive, sometimes jagged, always lush and transporting. He makes self-deprecating comments about his fiddle playing in the liner notes, but it's becoming more confident, and its dry tone suits his hymnal material well. He's broadened his vocal technique in subtle ways as well, with more whistling, humming and overtone singing than on his previous recordings.
Tim always gets me shaking my head in awe at the little details in his music. The guitar arpeggio and hummed line that open A Tiny Crown manage to be ominously dissonant and delicately graceful at the same time. And that's the first three seconds - I've been listening to it over and over trying to wrap my head around the rest of it. In John Colby's Hymn, listen to the way he extends the word "share" into overtone singing. On Careless Love and other tunes, listen to the way he lets notes a half-step apart ring on adjacent strings of the guitar - it should be dark and conflicting, but like Thelonious Monk's chords, it's so wrong it's right. Listen to the spitting, thumping sound he gets from his fingerpicking. If ever an artist deserved a much bigger audience than they have, Tim is that artist. Anyone with the remotest interest in "folk" or singer-songwriter music owes it to themselves to listen to this CD and its predecessors. I'm certainly looking forward to whatever else this cat has coming down the pike.
beauty and terror.......2004-05-31
Eriksen's repertoire mostly eschews familiar titles from the American folk canon. Only "Careless Love," "Two Sisters," and "Omie Wise" leap to easy recognition, though his readings of each are distinctive. The first, however, is one of the rare moments that betray Eriksen's linkage to the modern folk revival. The languid arrangement brings to mind the work of the brilliant (though sadly no longer active) British ballad singer/guitarist Nic Jones. The original "A Tiny Crown" is slightly reminiscent of another British folk guitarist, Bert Jansch (or, for that matter, the early, Jansch-besotted Donovan, before he went all wacky). You need not have heard of Jones or Jansch to be moved -- or, more likely, unsettled -- by what Eriksen does with these songs.
In the purely technical or aural sense the sound is crisp as a gorgeous fall day. Yes, the album was recorded in the basement studio of my old friend, the Twin Cities guitarist and producer Dakota Dave Hull, but I would admire it wherever it came from. If 2004 ushers into the world a superior example of hard-core folk at its most brilliantly flinty, I will be very, very surprised.

The Winding Mystery..........2005-09-21
The "winding mystery" to those who have discovered this man's genius, is why he is not a big star...But like any good mystery, it is the road of discovery, the journey itself that is of value. Deasy's musical journey has been long and at times convoluted, but ultimately redemptive, and it's clear he is on the right road with this new album "Chasing Down a Spark."
Here we find a hotter, more worldly Bill Deasy, and the tunes overall present the writer's optimistic world view. Lessons learned, wisdom found, forgiveness realized...
From the bluesy rockin' "Wishing Well", to the quiet, plaintive "And I Wait" to the many songs with catchy, hook-filled choruses that compel the listener to join in (Until I Get it Right, Now That I Know What it Means,Turn your Light On), this album has a feel-good quality that refreshes.
Joined by friends in both the writing and the performing (Brian Webb, Teitur Lassen, Molly Bancroft, Jane McCafferty, Rachael Yamagata,Maia Sharp, Scott Blasey, Rob James and more...) Deasy's clearly found the spark and got the fire going...
Turn your light on!!!.......2005-07-30
It is silent and loud, happy and sad, dressed and "naked", powerful and weak at the same time. And you keep asking yourself "man - how can one cd do this to me?" I'm still impressed.
