Seek & You Shall Find: More of the Best (1963-1981)

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
An interesting grab bag of cuts from Marvin Gaye's 18-year career at Motown. His Latin-tinged first single ("Wherever I Lay My Hat," later covered by Paul Young), the smoldering "No Good Without You," and a cover of the Four Tops' "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" are among the highlights of the '60s sides cherry-picked here. And that his troubled later years produced their share of beauties is made clear by the sweet "Praise" and self-knowing "Ego Tripping Out." Hope and despair were felt more profoundly in Gaye's music than in that of most other singers, and this intriguing package doesn't let us forget that. --Rickey Wright

Packed with Big Ideas about the future of mankind and dispatched with a distant, often icy veneer, Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence can scarcely camouflage its roots. It was begun by the late Stanley Kubrick in the mid-'80s; Spielberg collaborated briefly a decade later, bowed out, then inherited it upon Kubrick's death in '99. And while the late auteur's cold vision seems largely intact (if now infused with Spielberg's enduring Pinocchio fetish), it's safe to say that Kubrick's often challenging musical tastes would probably not have led him to composer John Williams's doorstep. Nonetheless, the acclaimed veteran again rises to the occasion, ably demonstrating that he's hardly been indifferent to 20-odd-years of minimalism and postmodernism and that, as always, the best film music is often a subtly crafted pastiche of sensibilities and styles. Setting the tone of the film's robotically enhanced not-so-distant future, "The Mecha World" crackles and glistens with Steve Reich's rhythmic urgency and John Adams's dense coloration, while "Abandoned in the Woods," "Hide and Seek," and "Rouge City" succeed by setting Williams's more traditional sense of melody against Phillip Glass's hypnotic arpeggios. There's also a sense that the composer has craftily evoked the ghost of Kubrick music past and 2001 in particular; "Replicas" and "Stored Memories" bring to mind Ligeti, while the mournful strings of "Cybertronics" seem a ghostly echo of Khachaturian's "Gayane Ballet Suite." David Foster's ballad "For Always" (in a solo rendition by Lara Fabian and a duet between Fabian and Josh Groban) seems twice-included strictly to enhance the album's radio allure. Completists should also note that Ministry's dark contribution to the film's Flesh Fair sequence, "What About Us?" is not included on this soundtrack, but is available on their Greatest Fits compilation. Arguably Williams's most musically adventurous score since his landmark Close Encounters, A.I. should take its place among the most distinctive of the composer's long and bounteous collaboration with Spielberg. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The music is masterfully composed with wit, majesty, and soul.......2006-06-19

A.I. means Artificial Intelligence. But there is nothing artificial about John Williams' organically emotional score and his 17th collaboration with Steven Spielberg. A.I. studies the unique fellowship between human and machine and John has woven a musical interface. John's score pierces the mystery of a robot (mecha) child's short existence. His name is David and he never had a birthday, but was engineered to give and revieve the love of the family he is placed in. The music underlines and then transports David on his jounrey of discovery from his inception to his tanscendence and John does this with wit, majesty, and soul. John's music is of our world and of theirs and finally of a world shared by both orga and mecha. And like so many of John's scores from Spielberg's movies, you really don't need the images to have the story told to you. He is the greatest musical storyteller of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful .......2006-02-20

This is a wonderful score. It features Josh Groban, Lara Fabian, and of course the master... John Williams.

I would definately say this is one of his best. It reminds me of some of the other Spielberg collaboration scores. Mainly, Empire of the Sun, and War of the Worlds. Lots of the score is wonderful emotional underscoring. It's very complex, and full of interesting scales and keys. Of course, there is plenty of gorgeous thematic material to make the score complete. Honestly, I have never heard a bad John Williams score. Come to think of it, I've never heard one that was less than brilliant and amazing. Really, give this a listen.

Please vote me helpful!

4 out of 5 stars John Williams does his best Minimalist Impersonation with Fine Results.......2006-02-05

If you're at all familiar with various work by John Williams, then you might be surprised at his soundtrack for the Spielberg movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Here Williams seems to shy away from his usual heroic, orchestral canvasses and focuses more on repetitive, rhythmic music with a much more subdued feel to it. Some people might be reminded of minimalist composer Phillip Glass but it's not always Glass that Williams emulates here, it's another major figure in the minimalist music movement, John Adams. Even if Williams emulates others at times, it's still pure John Williams throughout.

Of course Williams, just like Steven Spielberg, can't help but pour on the schmaltz once in a while. The main theme of the film is the one used for the song " For Always ". When this music is played by piano and orchestra it's quite beautiful. When the soprano Barbara Bonney sings it with wordless vocals, it's very evocative of the mood in the film. HOWEVER, I have no idea what John Williams was thinking when he basically turns this beautiful, simple theme into a corny pop song. Oh wait, I know exactly what he was thinking, he was trying to generate a pop hit! Ugh. When Lara Fabian sings " For Always " on track 5, you grind your teeth and barely make it through. When on track 13, Lara Fabian is joined by Josh Groban for a duet version of the same song, it becomes intolerable schmaltz at it's worst.

So yes, there is much satisfying work here by everyone's most lovable film composer John Williams, just don't listen to tracks 5 and 13 so your musical sensibilities won't be irreparably damaged!

The last word from me, A.I., terrific soundtrack that rivals Williams' best, sayonara!

5 out of 5 stars Will one day be considered among the best he's written.......2005-12-29

This score is a masterpiece. Although many critics found Steven Spielberg's film to be uneven, I feel that the score perfectly gives it heart. The score helps to understand what the film is all about -- a boy's love for his "mother."

This score by John Williams will one day be considered among the best he's written. Highly underrated, yet greatly poignant.

I agree with other reviewers who have warned that this is not in the Star Wars / Indiana Jones vein. If you're looking for big, bombastic symphonic music, look elsewhere. This is very sentimental, but beautifully done music. It demonstrates John Williams' talent for matching the music to the film's intention. As his resume' demonstrates, John Williams can write music for just about every film, including a misunderstood "Spielberg/Kubrick" collaboration.

"The Reunion" (final track) is one of the best tracks of orchestra/piano music ever written. The lullaby-like song is the same melody as was used in "For Always," and it is achingly beautiful.

Appropriately, this final track is played in the film while David being (finally) reunited with his "mother."

4 out of 5 stars Almost Impeccable.......2004-04-26

John Williams continues in the fine tradition of his previous work. This sondtrack is finely balanced, with delicate medleys, haunting themes, and some lullaby pieces that are almost enough to make one weep. Contrary to many of his previous works (Star Wars, Superman, et al,) Mr. Williams avoided writing loud, brassy fanfares that would have deeply conflicted with the dark, pensive nature of this film.
Several tracks stand out in this masterpiece. The twin versions of "For Always," one featuring Lara Fabian and the other featuring Josh Groban in a duet with Ms. Fabian are wonderfully pure. In solo form, Lara's voice is wonderfully smooth and has a subtle almost untrained quality that lends a genuineness to her singing. In the duet, Mr. Groban's silky smooth baritone perfectly offsets Lara's clear soprano. The penultimate song, titled "The Reunion" is a stunning, gorgeous lullaby of a piece that features a plaintive, almost childish piano theme. The simplicity is subtlely complex as the theme winds through an entire emotional range, from triumphant happiness to simple joy to black despair, and finally back into an almost heartbreaking lullaby.
Mr. Williams has displayed a wide variety of musical styles in this soundtrack. For fans of his that are desiring a "Star Wars" fanfare and overpowering orchestral pieces, this soundtrack is not for you. I personally prefer this collection to most of his other works.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What then is taste?.......2000-04-10

The very reason I purchased this CD was the fact that it used reconstructed Elizabethan accents; attempts at accuracy are always preferable to bowing to popular misconceptions (like in Shakespeare in Love--ack). I found this recording both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating--one can clearly see through this recording the branch-off point between the modern British and American accents, something which had always mystified me before.

Musically, this recording is full of little-known gems of the English Renaissance. This is a sample of what's on it, for Kenneth Melia: Sing a song of joy; Eliza is the fairest Queen; What then is love but mourning; Shall I sue; Heigh-ho holiday; I care not for these ladies; Mother, I will have a husband; Rest, sweet nymphs (a beautiful rendition with soaring harmonies on the chorus); and Sing we and chant it. Kenneth, if you still want a more complete list, just e-mail me (mitsuo@uclink4.berkeley.edu). But I insist that if you buy it now, without knowing all the songs, you will not be disappointed. They are subdued and genteel, with that hint of playfulness which one could say characterized the court under Elizabeth I. The vocalists are excellent, never succumbing to the operatic vocal style so popular with renditions of this repertoire, and, I think, the least authentic. Once again, Anne Azema charms with her supple, almost serpentine stylizations, and you also get a wealth of other talented vocalists who speak the Elizabethan tongue with convincing fluency. The instrumentalists play with passion and a feline subtlety that will catch you and never let go.

1 out of 5 stars Why no listing of the songs?.......1999-12-04

I'll admit, right away, that I haven't heard the music on this CD. What I want to comment about is the fact that it is impossible to FIND OUT WHAT MUSIC IS ACTUALLY ON IT! I thought Amazon would have the list of songs, because I couldn't find out what they were at the local music shop. I already have a good number of Boston Camerata CD's and I wanted to find out what was on this one before I purchased it. The local store even has a software program which normally allows customers to find out what's contained on a CD if it isn't on the cover. The only listing for this CD was "songs." This isn't the first time that a Boston Camerata CD has not had the musical selections listed on the outside. Why not ALWAYS have a listing of the music on the cover? Even if it's in small font it would still be worth it. So, as of yet I haven't purchased it. How does one find out what's on it? K.Melia

4 out of 5 stars Lacks that extra drop of refinement.......1999-05-23

This is a hard one to call. Brought up as I was on the ultra-modulated renditions of this and like material on Vanguard LPs by Alfred Deller and his consort, I find this Erato effort lacks that extra drop of refinement that is needed for the courtly music of the Elizabethan period. (The street and theater music might be another story, but beside the point here.) I know it is Anglophilic bias working here, but I found (for example) tenor William Hite's East Coast accent distracting. The women have accents that, while not all that appropriate, at least do not jar. It is of course true that Elizabethan English was closer to what Ringo Starr sounded like than Laurence Oliver. Play the track that contains "I care not for these ladies," which is indeed sung with a regional accent and you will see what I mean. However, in general "an Elizabetan Songbook" should sound at least what we accept today as British-sounding, if you follow. This said, I cannot fault the vocalizing or the playing. But I will still return to my Vanguard sets before playing this again. Still--who can dispute taste?

Composer John Ottman's ( X2 ) lush orchestral score also adds to the chills. For the main title theme, which runs throughout the film, Ottman incorporated vocals from Dakota Fanning. 'Dakota's singing can be heard throughout the soundtrack,' says Ottman. "She added wonderful, eerie touches.

    4 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-07-21

Personally, I loved the movie Hide and Seek. Both Dakota Fanning and Robert DeNiro are excellent actors and really deliver a smashing performance. Now, you all know the rule for really good movies: if there's a kickass movie, there's bound to be a kickass soundtrack. Now, there are exceptions to the rule (Titanic... eeww...) but thankfully, the Hide and Seek instrumental soundtrack isn't one of them. Composed beautifully by famed composer John Ottman, this collection of instrumental bits has an added bonus: the thrill of hearing Dakota Fanning singing to some of the songs... and her voice is one to be reckoned with. So why only four stars? Cause it isn't really the greatest instrumental soundtrack in the world (my pick for that: the Appleseed instrumental soundtrack [it's an anime movie,if you've never heard of Appleseed])- but then again, what is? All around, it's an awesome CD and completely fulfills what the movie presented to us on the big screen. Don't be surprised if you find yourself looking around warily as you listen to the final notes of Playing with Charlie.. then you'll be just like me.

5 out of 5 stars True to the music.......2004-04-21

In my constant search for music that represents the art of instruments & meaningful lyrics, Seek is a gem. Creative song writing, melody, soul, jazz, and everything that makes a song a SONG encompasses this CD. Come to find out, there are two previous CD's from Seek - 1999 & 2002! AMAZING! This is the best CD I've purchased all year. You'll pop this one in forever, finally music that is really music.

5 out of 5 stars Seek and Ye Shall Find........2004-04-01

Atlanta-based Seek's third album, "Journey into Day," is a fine disc of chilled underground soul featuring real instruments and gritty vocals. The group fuses old school vibes with nu jazz, and as a result, comparisons to the more familiar Incognito will be inevitable. But "Journey into Day" shows that Seek really does have an identity of its own. "Rise" and "Open the Way" are finely crafted with laid back grooves and flawless arrangements. They also stand out admirably on more mellow cuts like the relaxing title track and "Loving Heart," and they bring out the best in lead singer Lisa Terry's velvet-smooth voice. This is sensual and lively music that's a welcome diversion from the (sometimes) predictability of neo soul. The musicians (particularly bassist/guitarist Freddy Luster and drummer Brad Hasty) are on point, and the production is exceptionally classy. If you already have Sade, Incognito, and Maxwell in your music collection, then you'll love Seek's "Journey into Day."

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great CD!.......2004-03-24

Seek does a great job at melding jazz, R&B and dance rhythms coupled with life-affirming lyrics into beautiful music. The album begins with a head-bopping start with "Open the Way." Other notable tracks include "Something Real," the title track and "Loving Heart." The raw recording and production add to the album's charm. It's all about live, smooth-groovin' music here, not Pro Tools assembly-line fodder.

        5 out of 5 stars A True Musical Journey - - I love this CD.......2004-02-21

The music is simply beautiful. This CD takes you to a nostalgic place; it recreates as much as it recalls. Music lovers, add this one to your collection. It fuses soulful sounds, mid-tempo grooves, and dance rhythms that definitely stir your soul. This band has so much talent.

5 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Band --you've been waiting for this one.......2004-02-20

This album is their greatest record to date, and an instant soul classic! If you like Incognito, Brand New Heavies you will love Seek. This band has really come together wonderfully for this set -- hitting on all burners, from sweet smooth instrumentation to great lead vocals. The track "Journey into Day" is so eloquently composed, "Righ Here" dance remix is HOT. I love the rawness of their first album Venus and Mars, the dance and soulful jazzy sounds of the second album Surrender. This album is a combination of Seeks best work, a must have.

This record is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO Hot....i love it. I have been searching for solo projects by the vocalists on this record for about 1 year can anyone help? I love this album...it is chill, soulful and upbeat all at the same time....I can not explain it but this is the real deal...more of this..on the real....I love this album...they remind of another eruo band i love called "Liquid Loop"....there is good music out there!!!!....i have had this record for almost a year and I am still listening to it like I just bought it....

2 out of 5 stars Too Smooth for my taste.......2004-06-03

I'm not going to diss this album, but the direction beanfield has evolved in just doesn't interest me. Almost every track has vocals, very smooth soulful light R&B vocals. The vocals tend to be the main focus, rather than the interesting sounds or creative programming that made beanfield's previous albums catch my interest. The songwriting and arrangements are consistently non-offensive. and maybe a bit bland to my ears.

Great brunch music. Not very exciting though.

5 out of 5 stars definitely NOT worth the wait!.......2004-04-04

My original review: "Not as intense as HUMAN PATTERNS, which was an incredible, breakthrough type of new sound, but worth the five-year wait!" In retrospect, I was just being kind because I loved HUMAN PATTERNS so much. I've hardly listened to this CD since I first got it. HUMAN PATTERNS was SO incredible, SO groundbreaking, SO amazing, the type of CD you would turn off all the lights and blast it at top volume and just sit there being amazed!!! This is a "nice" CD. Some of the vocals are very "nice". But nowhere near HUMAN PATTERNS which is one of the BEST CDs I've bought in the last 10 years.
