Arguably the most eclectically prolific artist since Prince, Ryan Adams continues his chameleon revivalism with his most straightforward country music to date. Having evoked the inspiration of bands ranging from T. Rex to the Grateful Dead on previous solo releases, the former Whiskeytown frontman here channels the likes of Faron Young on "My Heart Is Broken," while framing the shot-and-a-beer opener, "A Kiss Before I Go," with honky-tonk piano and pedal steel. "Seems like I'm always movin'," he sings amid the rockabilly kick of "Trains," as the album finds his restless muse ranging from a dreamy duet with Norah Jones on "Dear John" to naked vulnerability reminiscent of John Lennon on "Silver Bullets." Only Adams would cut a track titled "The End" and sequence it second on the CD, or a song called "Peaceful Valley" and inject it with so much emotion. --Don McLeese

Mellow and nice.......2007-07-25
More Like Rock'N'Roll, No I Am Not Kidding.......2007-07-02
What Jacksonville City Nights however actually accomplishes is similar to what Rock N Roll, an electrified blast of alternative rock, did, morph Adams into a certain type of performer at a certain moment in time adding another dash to the pallet of his career. That might be impressive artistically but the question is do you all of a sudden like raw country simply because the previous it boy jumps into the genre?
On Jacksonville, Adams actually runs away from his previous core sound and the results are both impressive and jarring. If you want the pop hooks that adulterated his previous records Gold and Cold Roses, then Jacksonville isn't for you. Instead Adams steps into Willie Nelson mode and when it works (The Hardest Part, A Kiss Before I Go) you get some raw pure country sounds. When it doesn't work (title track) you get all the whiney walling that may have pushed you away from the genre. Therefore if you liked raw country before hand, you'll probably like Adams take on the genre, if you're only listening because Adams has jump into the genre, you'll likely find all the reasons you didn't like country music throughout Jacksonville City Nights. Maybe if Adams had spent more time with this focus a more complete feel would overtake the record, however being a relative rookie when it comes to the raw country sound he goes for on Jacksonville, Adams actually sounds like a rookie performer putting out his first record.
Jacksonville therefore is a member of a growing group of Adams records that see him take on a genre and bring all of its strengths and weaknesses to the forefront. So the passion for the genre is there but the experience to pull it off isn't.
Missing the Point.......2007-05-13
I'm quoting an earlier reviewer, and it's eerie how those quick-capsule reviews mirror my own opinion of Adams' output. But I disagree with those who compare his singing to a dog's howl, or blame country music itself. Traditional country is deceptively difficult to sing, and Ryan Adams just can't do it convincingly. He's trying to bear down on notes like George Jones and misses the mark by a mile. While I wouldn't go so far to liken his voice to dog noises, it is surprisingly devoid of emotional weight. I say "surprisingly", because Love Is Hell showcased some fantastic, emotive vocalizing. This one just sounds like he's phoning it in, as if he hasn't truly lived what he's singing about... which breaks the first rule of classic country. Ryan, stick with the "alt-" prefix stuff... you're way out of your league here.
Define "Alt Country".......2007-04-26
This is by far the most country album he's put out since leaving Whiskeytown. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of country music but this doesn't sound like any other country music out there. What I can't stand is the country-pop-flagwaving-prothisprothat kind of crap out there now. I like real country. Real country is Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, etc. I guess it could be called "old" country. That's this album sounds like. Ryan's country stuff has been labeled "Alt Country." I'm not sure what the heck "Alt Country" is but if this is it then it sounds like REAL country. If you're a Rock fan you probably won't like this album. If you're a country-pop fan you might like this album. If you're a real Ryan Adams fan you'll probably like this album. If you're fan of good old fashioned country you'll definately like this album. Tracks 1, 4, 9, & 10 are probably the standouts on this album. It's not a must have but if you're in the mood, it delivers.
A little too country for me........2007-02-12

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulleyAmazon.com

Album Description
Set against the decadent glamour and escalating danger of revolution-eve Cuba, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights re-imagines the 1987 film phenomenon from an exciting new perspective. Havana Nights tells a timeless story of a young woman's discovery of love, sensuality and independence - but with a sizzling style and rhythm all its own. In planning this new chapter in a beloved franchise, Artisan Entertainment and Miramax Films have put together a team of creative dynamos from the worlds of film, music and dance. Among them: maverick independent producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting); executive producer Sarah Green (Frida); Academy Award. winning screenwriter Ron Bass (Rain Man, My Best Friend's Wedding); director Guy Ferland; screenwriter Pamela Gray (A Walk on the Moon); choreographer Joanne Jansen; music industry legend Clive Davis, whose hot J Records imprint will release the soundtrack; acclaimed actor Diego Luna, a rising star following his performance in the sexy sensation Y Tu Mama Tambiin; and, in what promises to be a breakout role, gifted young actress Romola Garai (recently seen in Nicholas Nickleby). The resulting film is certain to give audiences - from newcomers to those who cherish the first Dirty Dancing - the time of their lives, and then some!Customer Reviews:

A three-note horn blast, a disco groove calling from the dance floor, a woman's voice charging in to sing "never, ever do I feel discouraged." It's the '70s again. You're surrounded by freedom at its most complete, and trivial. This is how Boogie Nights, a film about the rise and fall of a porn star, begins. The soundtrack consists of dance and trash pop songs playing non-stop, forming a kind of historical narrative behind the action. Vol. I rescues some great nuggets of fluff, both black and white--"Magnet and Steel" and "The Best of My Love," for example. Then, it deliberately goes too far with Night Ranger's "Sister Christian." The song, defiantly candy-ass, challenges our capacity to recycle the pop culture past. Its earnest emptiness and lack of irony make it the most uncool, and fascinating, thing on the record. --Steve TignorCustomer Reviews:

This compilation project's official title is already long enough, but for true accuracy it should read, The Best of Ottmar Liebert's First Two Recordings, Volume 1. Barcelona Nights strings together the more upbeat and animated selections from his two earliest recordings, Nouveau Flamenco (his famed debut) and Borrasca (plus one track, "Festival," from Poets and Angels). The package serves as the first installment in a two-disc series; the subsequent Surrender to Love will patch together romantically inclined selections of those early 1990s recordings. It's the same music, but with different sequencing and different packaging. As such, it offers graceful and pleasant listening, though the similarity in tempos gives the disc a slightly homogenous feel. Many like-minded guitarists have traveled the path that Liebert originally blazed, and Barcelona Nights offers an appealing reminder of the qualities that elicited such a huge initial reception: nimble, articulate fingerwork; charming, uncomplicated melodies; and just enough flamenco authenticity to convince maturing pop listeners that they had discovered something exotic. Highlights include the beckoning cheer of the well-known title track, and the earnest, uplifting energy of another early hit, "Heart Still/Beating." --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:
Great High Octave Guitar Jazz.......2006-08-24
If you are looking for new sounds come and get it!.......2006-06-12
Among the most creative and imaginative musicians in the last generations, Liebert must be included in the most representative lists. His creativeness and above all his powerful vision in what it concerns to the necessary oxygen the Flamenco needed, was intuited by him and so dedicated all his energies in search of its renovation, achieving a remarkable success.
To my mind the most interesting tracks of this valuable album are: Heart still beating, Barcelona nights, Santa Fe, Isla del sol, Bullfighter's dream and La Rosa Negra, but there is not any minor track.
If you really are searching for new inspiration motives and creative sounds, this album is a must for you.

Cross-pollination angers Nationalists.......2003-09-30
In my estimation, Flamenco has always been an art form influenced by many different forces and subject to change and evolution. Why is there such a nationalistic pride among many of its fans that ends up precluding such visionaries as Liebert, who have devoted their lives to making wonderful music, from taking part? Is it because he is not 100% Spanish?
The same exclusionary mentality that wants to limit Flamenco works well in Bible music in the South. The irony is that a Latin talent is often more welcome in other genres than a Gringo's is to Flamenco. The entire genre of Flamenco suffers much more from exclusionary thinking than it does from cross-pollination. How sad that such a beautiful art form is tainted by control freaks. Those of you who bash the likes of Liebert bash one who is intensely accomplished and pays such homage and utmost respect (not to mention commercial attention and longevity) to the art form. Very sad, indeed. You should be bashing Ricky and Enrique first!
Those of you who are so close-minded (You're probably ignoring me because of my Gringo status, anyway) should check out a really cool blue grass band I know. You'll be made to feel much more welcome than Liebert has in the wild world of Flamenco "purists."
This album is a wonderful collection of soulful, technically masterful sounds from a true visionary who pays the highest tribute to Spanish guitar by infusing it with fresh blood and vouchsafing its wonders to the masses. And it's better quality Flamenco than lots of other stuff on the market! Oh, sweet blasphemy! This is no dilettante - this man lives and breathes his music.
Other genres should only be so lucky!

Amazon.com essential recording
Put simply, this is the Beach Boys at their mid-'60s prime. Ironically, the band's greatest evolutionary leap was spurred by its leader, Brian Wilson, who decided to drop out of the band's live performances after a December 1964 nervous breakdown to concentrate on honing the Beach Boys' studio sound. With Wilson's productions gaining a significant new depth and confidence (note the innovative modulations on "Dance, Dance, Dance"), the first half of Today seems a logical, upbeat step forward from its predecessors. But it's the album's second act that steals the show, setting the stage for the triumph of Pet Sounds. Indeed, it's easy to imagine gorgeous, introspective tracks such as "Please Let Me Wonder," "She Knows Me Too Well," and "In the Back of My Mind" intertwined with the best of Sounds. Set against that standard, the follow-up, Summer Days, feels like a step backward, despite the presence of another Wilson world-beater production, "California Girls," and the band's second No. 1 single, "Help Me, Rhonda." Ever pressured by commercial concerns, Wilson and the band created what was in essence the true follow-up to the All Summer Long album. Still, there's a level of musical sophistication to tracks such as "The Girl from New York City," the Phil Spector tribute "Then I Kissed Her," and especially "Girl Don't Tell Me" and "Let Him Run Wild." Reissued (with 24-bit digital remastering) in a long out-of-print twofer edition to mark the band's 40th anniversary and Lifetime Achievement Grammy, this set features several bonus tracks as well as the insightful notes of David Leaf (The Beach Boys and the California Myth). Bonus cuts include the spectacular "The Little Girl I Once Knew" and revealing outtakes of "Dance, Dance, Dance," "I'm So Young," and "Let Him Run Wild," along with a studio version of a song previously only available on the Beach Boys Concert collection, "Graduation Day." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Magnificent!.......2007-02-27
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.
Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).
I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.

In 1997, writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson boldly went where few other filmmakers have dared--America's multibillion-dollar pornography industry--and produced a clear-eyed portrait of '70s and '80s American cultural mores as lived out by an extened family of adult filmmakers and stars. Given the period, Anderson had a wealth of fond, cheesy pop to choose from (hence Vol. 2). Aside from a few shop-worn cuts (Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing," perhaps the most overexposed '70s hit of 1997), the remainder are notably fresh. The best: Sniff & the Tears' "Driver's Seat," Apollo 100's "Joy," and The Move's "Feel Too Good." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa."Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Woods also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall. --Jerry McCulley

A first - rate recital!.......2007-07-28
Mario Frangoulis, faithful to the Romantic traditin, this young raising talent made his international debut in the beautiful outdoor Theatre of Thessaloniki, with a vivd and charismatic presence, an absolute domain about every piece he sang, conferring them an imaginative lyric flight with that special candor and sublime expressiveness.
Particularly emotive was the nice surprise he had reserved the viewer and spectators when just in the final coda of Nights in white stain, he Justin Hayward, the original member of Moody Blues making with Mario a very emotive duo, loaded of vibrant emotion and rewarding memories.
The orchestra, support accompaniment, and enlightenment was superb. The repertoire included three recital!well known pieces of Mecano: the sensitive A la luna de Valencia, Hijo de la luna and Naturaleza muerta, sung with passionate ardor, but there were admirable entries such as Buongiorno Principesca from the film "Life is beautiful", the classic Luna Rossa and Night wants to forget was croned with a adaptation of Tosca "sometimes I dream."
The Italian people have a smart word when they are happy and wish you the best they can; they say Auguri , so I would wish from this humble position, the same hopes for this new promise of the song; Mario Frangoulis.
