While Gladys Knight and the Pips spent large portions of the '60s, '70s, and '80s on the charts, this smart CD is the first attempt to compile high points of their tenures at various labels (Motown subsidiary Buddah, Columbia, MCA). While Knight proved equally at home with smokin' church-bred R&B (the original "I Heard It Through the Grapevine") and uptown pop (an unfortunate medley of "Try to Remember" and "The Way We Were"), she was most effective on plainspoken tales of everyday people. That's the reason "Grapevine," "Midnight Train to Georgia," "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," and "Save the Overtime for Me," recorded over a 15-year span, sound so much of a piece. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

By now, the list of late-career standards-coverers stretches a mile long--in addition to Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Smokey Robinson, and a host of less-successful others, add Gladys Knight to the tally. Don't just lump her in, though, because Before Me differs from its forebears in ways that won't let you forget it. Here is a flawlessly selected and executed exercise in nostalgia for all the right reasons: Knight, in a voice entirely undiminished, extracts the elegance from each of these legendary numbers and smears it all over the surface, something most listeners would expect only from a master stylist on the order of Tony Bennett. Yet the former Pip leader presides with a light touch. Replacing the powerful pop-soul that launched her legend with the swankiest, most black-tie jazz imaginable, she whispers her way through George and Ira Gershwin's "The Man I Love" and the candy-sweet lament "I'll Be Seeing You." Elsewhere, she smokes up the Lady Day classics "Good Morning Heartache," "The Man I Love," and "God Bless the Child," unintentionally turning the latter into a master course of vocal restraint. If "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" is the disc's wild card--Knight plays it light--the Duke Ellington stunner "Come Sunday," made popular by gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, is its five-star clincher: Knight punches her way through tirelessly, with a true believer's fervor. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
Gladys What Happened?.......2007-05-17
Thank you Gladys!!!.......2007-05-16
It took a very long time for this gifted artist (who has always been one of my favorites from the Motown era and beyond) to record these great songs from the likes of Ella, Dinah, Billie, Lena, and so on. The title "Before Me" is a very fitting one indeed, and the music is simply magnificent!
KNIGHT SHINES.......2007-05-09
Gladys Takes On THE STANDARDS.......2007-04-28
Having said this, I must admit this CD takes a few listens to warm up to. Like all STANDARDS recordings by CONTEMPORARY artists (whether Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, George Michael, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Chaka Khan, Rod Stewart, Shirley Horn, Diana Ross, Herb Alpert or....WHOMEVER), the listener is required to LET GO of previous audio experiences with the singer at hand; YOU must surrender! These recordings don't often, or readily, "fit" with our sensibilities and expectations of the singer...
After one spin of this CD I too was ready to stop listening and sell it back on Amazon (along with the 100's of others who are doing so, starting at $3.99 !?*&$%). However, after a couple more spins I'm ready to embrace this recording for what it is...to LET IT SELL ME.
Simply put, Gladys is just too great a diva, and Tommy and Phil are just too good at producing. This is a very high quality recording, whether you're ready for it or not. Thank you VERVE!!!
Summary: I eagerly excuse Gladys for maybe confusing SOUL music for STANDARDS at certain points; I excuse her for OVER SINGING and UNDER SINGING in spots throughout; I excuse the singer and the producers for meshing Big Band with Jazz with Blues with Symphony Orchestra with Soul when you're not really ready for it at times. But, in the end, I'm just VERY ready to accept this CD for WHAT IT IS!
Buy this!.......2007-03-04

By far the best Pips set ever! All the hits in one place!.......2006-06-28
This chronological retrospective leads off with 1961's "Every Beat Of My Heart" (versions of which charted on both Vee-Jay and Fury) and its follow-up on Fury "Letter Full Of Tears" (written by the great Don Covay). A move to the Maxx label resulted in 1964's enclosed minor hit "Giving Up" (written by future disco star Van McCoy).
At this point Gladys & the Pips were major stars on the chitlin circuit, but mainstream success eluded them until they joined Motown in 1966. The collection includes 13 of their biggest Motown hits, such as the frenetic original version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and the lovely ballads "If I Were Your Woman" and "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)." It's a good overview of their Motown years. It you want more of their recordings from this era, I suggest you check out the 22-track Ultimate Collection from 1997.
In spite of their successes at Motown, Gladys and the Pips always felt like second-class citizens there (Miss Ross of course always got preferential treatment) and moved over to Buddah in early 1973 when their Motown contract was up. It was at Buddah that they made their most memorable music and this set includes (again) 13 of their biggest hits there, among them their signature song "Midnight Train To Georgia," the funky barnburner "On And On" (from the film Claudine), the heartbreaker "Part Time Love," and an effective live version of "The Way We Were" teamed with "Try To Remember." This is by far my favorite period of Pip music and it is nice to see every key Buddah track included here.
A jump to Columbia in 1979 resulted in a lot less hits than their tenures at Motown and Buddah reaped, but there were a few great moments, such as the enclosed Grammy winner "Save The Overtime For Me," the majestic "Landlord," and a version of "Hero (Wind Beneath My Wings)" that remains definitive. A move to MCA in 1987 brought Gladys & the Pips' last number one r & b hit - another Grammy winner - the call & response funkster "Love Overboard" and it's equally rowdy follow-up "Lovin' On Next To Nothin'." They're both here. The set then closes with Gladys' theme for the James Bond film LICENSE TO KILL as well as the two standout tracks from her Good Woman solo album from 1991: "Men" and "Superwoman" (the latter a collaboration with good friend Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle).
This strong, strong retrospective puts all other Pip sets to shame. It's all of the Gladys Knight that most people will ever need.

The genius of At Last...The Duets Album is in its matchups and cross-pollinations. If producer Walter Afanasieff weren't already a much sought after music man--check out his arrangements here if his talents are unfamiliar--he might have built a brilliant career as a modern-day cupid. These are covers with a what-if factor (what if Brian McKnight covers Wham!? What if Richard Marx covered Elton John?) you don't want to miss: LeAnn Rimes wraps Bryan Adams' anthem-y "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" in rainy-day heartache; Yolanda Adams reaches for the stars in a rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" as inspiring as the original; Barbra Streisand waltzes through "The Music That Makes Me Dance" like the years since her heyday haven't mattered; and Earth, Wind & Fire dig the depth out of Raphael Saadiq's "The Way You Move." This, of course, is to say nothing of the sensuality brought to these collaborations by the goldilocked sax man himself. As with all Kenny G projects, the music is smoother than a frappuccino and oddly suited to a soap opera living room set; its swirls, swells, and crescendos seem meant to fall on bejeweled ears in pretty, carefully appointed spaces only. All-instrumental tracks like "Don't Know Why" with David Benoit and "Pick Up the Pieces" with David Sanborn have a fun look-at-me-sharing-the-spotlight quality, but in the end Chaka Khan puts across her point most convincingly: She, not Christina Aguilera, should have sung "Beautiful" to begin with. -Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

If you appreciate great musicians coming together to produce some really listenable music, (and I do mean, over and over without ear fatigue), then this CD is for you! I only hope he doesn't stop here. I hope he comes out with more duet albums in the future. Maybe some Chicago, Rascal Flatts, Peter Cetera, Tower of Power, and any number of other great voices in the business!
My favorite is the remix of "The Way You Move"...nice grooves in there! If I had one complaint, it would be that the songs didn't actually line up in the order on which they were listed on the CD cover. Other than that, it's at the top of my favorites in my library of 3,000+ CDs!
It is OK ! Next time, team up with Anita Baker and Regina Belle !.......2006-05-28

Gladys Knight & The Pips- Greatest Hits.......2007-06-27
Gladys Knight & The Pips---their legacy will always shine brightly !!!.......2006-12-05
The CD boasts great classic hits including their number one hit "Midnight Train To Georgia;" this song is about a about a woman who follows her man to Georgia because she loves him and she will love him forever. Gladys and The Pips convey remarkable angst in the hauntingly beautiful "If I Were Your Woman" and "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)." The song "Letter Full Of Tears" deals with the pain of an unrequited love and Gladys performs this flawlessly with The Pips backing her up nicely. Awesome!
I like the joyful and upbeat song entitled "Friendship Train" and the touching "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me." "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" reminds me of my father and his unconditional love for me. Their delivery of this song is profoundly moving.
This is a great CD for people who want a sampler to become better acquainted with the fine art of Gladys Knight and The Pips. The total running time is only about 35 minutes and wow, how I wish Curb Records had included two or three more songs on this album. Unfortunately, this is often the way it goes with "budget" lower priced CDs. If you like this CD I recommend The Essential Collection by Gladys Knight and The Pips as well as their other albums. I also recommend this album for fans of R&B/Soul and pop/R&B.
Gladys Knight and The Pips remain one of the best groups ever in the business! I hope you enjoy this CD as much as I did! SMILE

This Motown release covers only this seminal R&B act's recordings for the company's Soul subsidiary well; don't look here for, say, the Buddah-label "Midnight Train to Georgia." But all is not lost on this supposed "ultimate collection." Especially when you get Gladys--easily one of the most underrated soul singers--and her Pips tearing through their church-drenched 1967 version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" or ripping into the peace and love anthem "Friendship Train" or the rousing, finger-wagging "It Should Have Been Me" (one of the greatest you're-gonna-miss-somebody songs of the soul era). With the Pips' seamless harmonies and Gladys's wide-open, no-nonsense vocals, these 22 songs are a great introduction to one of the most beloved R&B/pop groups of the '60s and '70s and well worth owning--even if it only tells half of the story. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

Heart and Soul.......2005-07-04
This comp is excellent. I was at a Mod/Soul DJ night in San Francisco in December 2002 and the DJ spun "Walk In My Shoes" off a 45Rpm and I was gassed instantly. I knew about her work in the 1970's, but this......this was good, danceable raw soul. I looked into Gladys's career and music before the 1970's and stumbled upon this comp. The music is danceable, and Gladys put every effort into what was provided for her, swooning harder, better, than any modern 'diva' could today. The backing by the Pips is stellar, always hitting the beat, and backing up "what she's talking about" and that was in itself something she should be proud of.
Clearly the best collection of all their great Motown hits .......2005-02-06
Originally released back in 1997, "The Ultimate Collection" features just about every one of the groups charted singles from their highly successful six year stint at Motown. While Gladys Knight and the Pips would achieve their biggest chart success during the mid-seventies at Buddah Records, a good many critics would argue that their best work was probably done at Motown. I would tend to agree with that assessment. Gladys Knight and the Pips were formed way back in 1952 after 8 year old Gladys was the weekly winner on the nationally televised "Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour". From that point on there was simply no holding her back. After a couple of highly successful records in the early 1960's Gladys Knight and the Pips arrived at Motown in early 1967. And before that year was out they had a monster hit with the original version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." Other Top Ten hits would follow including "If I Were Your Woman" and "Neither One of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" from 1973. As is so often the case some of my personal favorites were not necessarily the biggest hits. Perhaps my very favorite recording is the funky "It Should Have Been Me" which barely cracked the Top 40 in the Summer of '68. And switching gears completely, I was totally mesmorized by Gladys' heart wrenching rendition of the great country standard "Help Me Make It Through The Night". I had forgotten just how great a record that one really was. Add to these other familiar hits like "The End of Our Road" and "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" and you've got yourself a pretty darn good collection.
If you are in the market for the all the great Motown tunes then this single disc collection is still the best option around. I have been waiting for years for a collection that spans the entire forty year career of this legendary group. But for now, pop this one in and enjoy. Highly recommended.

Gladys brings down the house with "The End of the Road".......2004-02-20
That being said, I also liked "Our Love", a feel good track with great vocals. "I Don't Want to Know" was a sappy ballad produced by Babyface that received lots of radio airply.
Surprisingly, some of the tracks from big name producers like Babyface, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (Next Time), and BeBe Winans (I'll Fall in Love if You Hang Around), and George Duke (Somehow He Loves Me) were not that memorable.
For All Music Lovers.......2002-12-12
Maybe my prayers were answered, fact is this time she has teamed up with more contemporary and well-known writers and producers.
And it does a fat good to her.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis write and prooduce both NEXT TIME and the desperation lament of HOME ALONE; Babyface skillfully tells, produces and backs up on the final statement of a woman who finds out about her man cheating on her with I DON'T WANNA KNOW. I'LL FALL IN LOVE IF YOU HANG AROUND sees Rhett Lawrence and Bebe Winans behind the wheel.
OUR LOVE is a nice uptempo and CHOICE OF COLORS is Gladys covering Curtis Mayfield.
But the hot spot of the whole collection is a live medley of old and new classic standards almost 12.00 minutes long, something that gives the real stature of this woman on stage...
END OF THE ROAD MEDLEY is soooooo good.
