Originally recorded for legendary producer Bert Berns' Bang label, this collection documents the mid-'60s period when Neil Diamond was an emerging New York songwriter and apprentice pop star. Many of these hits have generated subsequent cover smashes--"I'm a Believer" (Monkees), "Kentucky Woman" (Deep Purple), "Red Red Wine" (UB40), "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" (Urge Overkill)--but the originals remain the greatest. Produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, sublime singles like "Solitary Man," "Cherry Cherry," and "Thank the Lord for the Night Time" kept Brill Building rock on the charts during the British Invasion. Diamond would go on to become a '70s megastar, but many believe he has never equaled these recordings. --Ben Edmonds

5 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond at his very best.......2007-04-23

These are the classic songs that established Diamond as the superstar he is.
Amazingy feel good jazz/rock. If you feel a bit down, this is a great tonic to lift your spirits. And the sound here is crisp and clear.
Features such gems as the rollicking Kentucky Woman, the get up and dance Cherry Cherry, the strum along Solitary Man, the rock n roll You Got To Me, the bluesy O Got The Feeling (Oh No, No), the hand-clapping Thank The Lord For The Night Time, the inspiring love song, I'm A Believer, the tender Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon, the song of loneliness and comfort, Shilo, the melancholy Red Red Wine and the emphatic The Boat That I Row.
This is Neil Diamond at his very best. What really established him as a star. And this is from a simpler and happier era in the world, when we appreciated people for who they were, and knew what was important.

5 out of 5 stars Solitary Man: Expanded Version Of Neil's Bang Hits.......2006-07-27

This review is for the rare & out of print European CD titled "Solitary Man." "Classics: The Early Years" is a great album, but only contains a mere 12 songs, while Neil Diamond released well over 20 songs for the Bang label during the late 1960's before joining UNI. The "Solitary Man" CD contains a total of 19 songs, 11 of which are out of print and otherwise unavailable on CD. This disc contains all of the songs on the OOP LP "The Feel Of Neil Diamond" except for "Hanky Panky" and most of the songs released on the OOP 2LP "Double Gold." These are: "Red Rubber Ball", "New Orleans", "Monday Monday", "I'll Come Running", "Someday Baby", "You'll Forget", "Shot Down", "The Long Way Home", "Love To Love", "Crooked Street" and "La Bamba." This CD doesn't completely replace "Classics", as there are a few songs on that disc that are not on "Solitary Man", so buying the "Solitary Man" CD in addition to "Classics" will give you nearly every song Neil ever recorded for Bang Records. The other songs are completely out of print("The Hanky Panky" for one)and have never been issued on CD. Hopefully someone will someday release a CD that contains his complete output for Bang records, but for now this CD does the job and since it's been forty years and no one has done this it appears unlikely. "Classics: The Early Years" is currently in print and easy to find, but "Solitary Man" is out of print and almost impossible to find, so grab a copy if you can find one!

5 out of 5 stars Neil Diamonds first phase........2006-01-20

These songs are all great, short Rock and Roll songs from the mid 60's. How about the complete Bang Recordings. I think there are less than 30 songs total. They would fit all on one CD. For the completests and the purists, Neil could release a 2 CD set with the mono versions on one disk and the Stereo on another. The only problem with this is there are multiple versions of some of the more popular such as Shilo (not including the version he did for UNI). It seems that every album release from Bang Records that contained that song had a different mix and different lyrics. Heck, just do what the Beach Boys did with Pet Sounds and have four discs and one disc would include just the instrumentals. Include a 60 page booklet with glossy pictures and song by song comments from Neil, Jeff, and Ellie.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2005-11-20

I finally bought the cd version of this great album and it is early-rock n roll heaven!

my favorite song is "I Got The Feelin' (Oh No, No)" (and interestingly,Neil includes a sample of that song on his new "Save Me A Saturday Night")."Shilo",The Boat That I Row","Solitary Man",etc there isnt a single bad song on this disk.

I hope Sony releases Classics:The Early Years Part 2,since there are much more gems from the Bang-label vault unreleased on cd.

5 out of 5 stars Early Diamond.......2005-11-03

This "Greatest Hits" CD, culled from Diamond's 1960s Bang label sessions, states on the cover "The Original Hit Recordings". This is not quite true; if it were true, they would all be the mono single versions. These are the stereo versions, often with a different vocal track. There is a compilation with the mono versions of most of these, but it is a multiple CD set. So this is still the only single disc collection available of Neil Diamond's great early rock & roll recordings, in my opinion, the most essential music ever made by Diamond.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-01

Polychoral music-music written for several groups of musicians separated spatially-was not peculiar to Venice, but it was associated with the Basilica of San Marco and ceremonial events in the Venetian cultural calendar.
Chordal writing reached its peak in the polychoral works of Giovanni Gabrieli(1555-1612), the principal church composer in Italy of the progressive development. He not only increased the number of choirs to four and the total pitch range to over four octaves, but also juxtaposed passages of conventional rhythm with strikingly jagged suncopated motifs. These dramatic contrasts were further intensified by occasional chromatic harmony and unusual dissonances and, more significantly, by the use of instruments that alternated or combined with the voices. All of these traits are well demonstrated in the music on disc 1 of this set. His music is wonderfully exciting!!!!
Upon his death, Monteverdi succeeded him, and took his own direction musically; much different from Gabrielli. It is not just that their styles are different, but the instrumentation is much different as you will hear upon listening to disc 2.
Two subsequent directors of music represented here are Legrenzi and Lotti, both primarily opera composers.
Vivaldi had no direct connection with the basililca; he worked at the 'Pieta', and his motet 'Clarae stellae' was written for a 'Signora Gertruda, a singer who sang at the Pieta. This is one of the most attractive pieces on disc 2, and is often recorded by countertenors (altos)but on this disc is sung by Randi Stene, mezzo soprano, who sings it quite well. Andreas Scholl has recorded this, and I do personally prefer Scholl's countertenor quality for this particular piece.
Monteverdi's 'Currite populi' is another favorite of mine, and its excellently performed herein.
There is just so much to enjoy on these two discs for the early music lover. The instruments are very skillfully played and the styles of the various composers are adhered to all the time. The balance between the voices and the instruments is perfect as one might expect from Parrott's performers. The soloists: Emily van Evera (soprano), Randi Stene (mezzo) and Jeffrey Thomas (tenor) all sang with the correct emotional investment. Certainly worth listening to!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review .......2007-01-09

Venetian Church Music?....never thought I'd be listening to that, anyway this music is for those who seek it out, If thats not you this probably won't interest you (but you can try some renaissance/baroque experimental listening to see if you'd like it!). If your into this though, this is a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional tone quality.......2006-03-28

When I purchased this recording, I had not yet had the pleasure of owning an Andrew Parrott/Taverner Consort recording. I was so impressed! Andrew really excercises an understanding of this genre, an understanding that I haven't often seen. In particular I was quite pleased with this rendintion of Gabrieli's "In ecclesiis" (although the Bass, I don't know his name, is too lacking in volume). Other than that, I just adore this CD set. I also recommend Andrew Parrot for anything predating Bach (*not including Bach!). There is a 5 CD of particular interest and quality called "From Monteverdi to Vivaldi" by this same ensemble that you might consider purchasing instead of this set (almost exact same price, and one of the CDs- the better of the two in this set- is included in the 5CD set).

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Andrew Parrott.......2005-08-04

Who else but Andrew Parrott?! The fabulous adventurer in the field of early music, Parrott has time and again unearthed unknown masterpieces, shedding light on their original luster through a keen sense of the historical settings, employment of the proper historic instruments & period vocal style, and his own inspired musicianship. Throughout the 2nd half of the 20th century music lovers like me knew the works of Gabrieli through the appropriations by well-meaning ensembles of modern brass instruments: Chicago Symphony Brass, Canadian Brass, etc. Parrott has been the first to perform and record many of these works with early 17th century instruments, providing a restored sonic image for the 21st century connoisseur. Bravo! Encore, please!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous introduction to Venetian sacred music.......2003-07-24

This fantastic collection of music is probably one of the best introductions to Venetian Baroque (early to late) on offer.
The first disc, devoted to Giovanni Gabrieli, is nothing short of amazing. Cornetts, Baroque violins, tenor cornetts, sackbuts and multiple organs (try the first track - the huge Dulcis Jesu patris imago à 20 voci) can be heard on this disc and they are all played with great panache, style and, most importantly, expression. I bought both of these discs when they were issued on EMI Reflex over ten years ago - and I have never stopped loving these magnificent and colourful performances.

If you want only one recording of Giovanni Gabrieli's music - then this might be the one for you! The other might be the Gabrieli Consort's 'A Venetian Coronation'? (if you want two Gabrieli recordings in your collection!)

The second disc contains a very tasty selection of music by Legrenzi, Monteverdi, Vivaldi and, again, Giovanni Gabrieli (the star of the show!).

If you want to know what 8 cornetts and 16 sackbuts sound like - then this is the place to go! The singing and playing from all concerned is excellent.

I love this CD and I bought this reissue because my old EMI CDs were getting a bit old!

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.

The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.

These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.

Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.

The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:

1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.

2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.

3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.

Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

5 out of 5 stars Early Childhood Classics - Old Favorites With A New Twist.......2007-05-26

We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24

My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Kid Tunes.......2006-02-18

I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28

If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19

I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

This might just be the Hildegard CD you're having if you're having only one. Unlike CDs by the better-known Sequentia and Gothic Voices--all superb and highly recommended--here we get Hildegard sung by one voice, that of the lovely Rosa Lamoreaux, whose natural, warm, unaffected, but dramatically involved presentation keeps the listener riveted. She is supported by Tina Chancey and Scott Reiss (known collectively as Hesperus), who entwine the vocal lines with music for recorders, hammered dulcimer, vielle, viola da gamba, and other instruments--as well as performing three solos. Recorded in a soft-focus acoustic, this disc surrounds you with delicacy, devotion, and elegance--much the way Hildegard might have wanted it. Highly recommended to all lovers of beautiful music. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Extraordinary Music.......2005-07-22

This cd contains some of the most beautifully crafted and "luminous" music that I have ever heard. The quality of the musicianship is exquisite; the vocals and arrangments are superb. Is it possible to give a product ten stars? If so, then this recording deserves, at the very least, that rating.

5 out of 5 stars Voice and spirit of the angels!.......2004-02-27

This CD is a most heavenly creation of voice and music with Soprano Rosa Lamoreaux having the voice of an angel. It was like being lifted to heaven on angel's wings. I took this CD with me to the hospital when I had serious surgery recently. When the pain was at it's worst, I put this CD in my CD-walkman and was peacefully lulled into a most calm state. This was one of two CD's that I listened to while in the hospital, the other was Hildegard von Bingen: Ecstatic Chants, which was truly a CD of healing voice and music as well and also one that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Work stress reliver.......2001-09-23

I have it on my computer at work. People come it and ask me 1) where's the music coming from and 2) what is that? It's gorgeous!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sonic/spiritual experience.......1998-11-20

Soprano Rosa Lamoreaux has the voice of an angel and takes the listener to another plain in this magical recording. Hildegards music is universal and combines the wonderful detail of medieval precision with the soothing elements of chant.

This recording should be bought by anyone who enjoys early music or chant or the lyrical tones of a beautiful voice.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual elegance and simplicity.......1998-11-17

This surprising CD may cause some raised eyebrows from Monteverdi purists, but they are sure to be taken in and convinced by the performances. Emmanuelle Haim is an early-Baroque specialist who believes in a full-bodied approach to the repertoire--no white-voiced, lightly-touching-the-music for her--and she makes it work without ever distorting or going against what is on the printed page. This recording is her boldest yet. Haim uses the warm-toned young tenor Rolando Villazon and soprano Patrizia Ciofi, both known for their roles in 19th-century opera, and Topi Lehtipuu, a fuller-voiced tenor than usual for Monteverd,i in some of the composer's most dramatic works, and each comes brilliantly to life. The long Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda is an exciting narrative of war, death, and forgiveness. With Villazon as the narrator and Haim's instrumentalists offering big-boned playing, the result is almost cinematic. The shorter pieces are just as effective, with Patrizia Ciofi's expressive "Ohimé" opening the mock lament "Ohimé ch'io cado" with remarkable emphasis and Topi Lehtipuu as involved and musical in his solos as he is duetting with Villazon. This CD will make early-music people appreciate operatic voices and opera lovers pay more attention to 17th-century music. A breathtaking disc. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and interesting.......2007-05-07

Villazon's voice is fine for this music and the combination of his beautiful sound, Monterverdi's music and Haim's band is wonderful. The accompanying DVD is very interesting and increased my enjoyment of the music cd. A great idea to include a DVD with the cd. Worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Great Perfomances.......2007-05-07

I bought this CD as a fan of Villazon. it is a remarkable feat and is worth buying for the Combattimento alone. Villazon narrates the story of the battle with amazing vocal ability. The other tracks are excellent too with Ciofi and Lehitpuu, the duet between the two tenors is wonderful a weaving of two different voices. A DVD issued with some CDs is interesting telling the making of the CD.

3 out of 5 stars You can't build furniture with a chain saw........2007-04-16

There are reasons for preferring lighter and more athletic voices for Monteverdi, and they have nothing to do with purism. The best way to make my case is to recommend a comparison. Get the Archiv disk of Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorida by Musica Antiqua Koln, Reinhard Goebbel director, or even better, any of the La Fenice recordings of "The Heritage of M onteverdi." To my quite impure ears, this disc under review sounds galumphing and un-integrated.

5 out of 5 stars Very beautiful.......2007-02-18

I bought the recording because it received an excellent review in the BBC Music Magazine and I usually agree with their ratings. I enjoyed it immensely. Subsequently, I read other reviews on the Internet and found that some people complained that Villazon and Ciofi do not have the "right" voices for Monteverdi. That may be true. However, I own a lot of early music recordings with "appropriate" voices and find that after a while they all sound a lot alike. So, I welcome Haim's fresh approach.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque music-who would have thought?.......2007-02-06

Being a huge, huge fan of Rolando Villazon I bought this CD just because I love him so much. I was surprised to find that this music is very good to listen to. It can't top the opera arias but there is something about it that sounds like Gregorian chant and being a Catholic I miss the latin so I found that I did really enjoy this. You should watch the DVD first that comes with the CD and you will not be so intimidated by it if this is your first foray into baroque music as it was mine. Rolando is a very funny guy anyway and his humor helps to qualm the stuffiness you would expect{but don't get} with this type of recording. You can almost imagine that you are in a great room and these madrigals are being performed for the first time in front of royalty or leading citizens of the day-what a feeling to be transported back to that time.

Product Description

Through our years of touring and performing, one of our biggest challenges has been concert programming-finding, rehearsing & presenting works that we and our audiences will find stimulating, enjoyable and entertaining. While we are always on the lookout for larger, substantial works, we inevitably come across smaller pieces that capture our imagination, little gems we feel deserve exposure. We have included these pieces in our performances to give our listeners a respite, a breather from the more challenging works inherent in the wind repertoire. This CD is a collection of some our most-played, most-requested, most-enjoyed shorter works. It is our hope that you will enjoy these pieces as much as we have over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Really Glad I bought this CD.......2006-03-11

I'm just getting into classical music at the tender age of 41 so I'm far from an expert here. Like another reviewer I heard about this CD (which had been nominated for a grammy) on NPR. It sounded interesting so I decided to buy it. And I'm really glad I did! The music is lively & playful in some parts and gentle & soothing in others. It makes perfect background music when I'm working. And the music sounds simply wonderful coming out of my new iPod Hi-Fi!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-02-22

I discovered this work while listening to NPR and could not wait to own it.

A wonderful CD, a MUST HAVE.....my ipod is smiling;-)

5 out of 5 stars Another Yazoo masterpiece!.......2006-07-17

This is not your usual blues cd. These aren't the typical blues artists you have heard about in books or television. Some of the guys only did 1 or 2 records, but they are KILLER! If you want a great introduction to the lesser known blues masters this is it!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of lesser-known Mississippi bluesfolk.......2004-06-11

If you feel like you've exhausted all the Delta and Mississippi blues from Patton to B.B., listen to this. This disc contains many of the only recordings by obscure, but no less talented, artists of early country acoustic blues. You may have heard Geechie Wiley's "Last Kind Word Blues" on the film *Crumb.* If you saw the film, the song has probably haunted you ever since. Worth buying for that track alone.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2001-09-30

Compared to the giants of delta like Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, the artists on this album are relatively obscure, but it is due more than anything of the random aspect of the destiny. With have Garfield Akers recorded as many sides as Chambre of wire (which did not record many commercial discs of pre-war period, but which appreciated a modicum fame during the rebirth the blue ones of years ' 60), it would have the respect which it deserves (I think it is better a guitarist than the Room). The same ones can be known as of any of the artists on here (not to mention many artists for the past several thousand years, but to think of that inserts too much). The inclusion of 6 ways above here by women cannot seem substantial, but it rather quickly becomes clear that the women were of importance equal for the men in the respect to blue of Mississippi (and, heu, of you know, the life and the basic rights and very which), and they more amply had been recorded, they would be regarded just as powerful of a musical force. Why the hell didn't record the value of hours of the airs of Geechie Wiley when they had the chance? How could they take it for granted? It is tragic, if you find this kind of tragic thing. If Wiley had just recorded a LP' S-value of material, it would be considered more significant than the evil of John, as single as the jump James, perhaps even while significant like Charley Patton. Ouais, I said it. I do not exaggerate. Unfortunately, it left only one handle on sides (the most included here) for the posterity, if the posterity exists in its case. The guitar playing and singing here is brilliant through and through, and the noise of these 78s is excellent (except, unfortunately, blue head of work "without mother of Elvie Thomas of child," which has the heavy external noise). The notes of covering are excellent, certain better notes of covering for an album of Yazoo. If you stumbled in this page for any reason, and clearly you have, you must buy this CD that you will not regret it. But if you regret it, do not carry not felt sorry for to me about it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Lesser-Known Bluesmen (and Women).......2001-02-10

I LOVE this CD! After you've been through all the Skip James, Son House, Charley Patton, and Robert Johnson, this is a great place to go. I was pleased to find the haunting Geeshie Wiley song "Last Kind Words" that was used in the documentary "Crumb". Also here is "Outside Woman Blues" covered by Eric Clapton in his Cream days. A great collection with great notes, Yazoo does it again!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overlooked early blues.......1999-03-31

This wonderful collection contains many relatively obscure but quite good examples of pre-war delta blues. Particularly noteworthy, in my opinion, are both tracks by Blind Joe Reynolds and the uniquely paced "Bullfrog Blues" by William Harris.

3 out of 5 stars needs just a few more rarities from the early 60s.......2004-10-11

i give early classics a 3 star rating only because it needs just a few more rarities from stevie's early 60s period.the hits like 'uptight'-'fingertips'-'i was made to love her'-'yester-me, yester-you,yesterday'-have been included in so many of his greatest hits compilations-we hardcore stevie fans would very much like to hear his lesser known or unreleased early material. for example, little stevie recorded a song in the spring of 1963 called 'lois' which is available on motown's "never-before-released masters:from motown's brightest stars-the 1960's"/songs like 'lois' and the ignored 'purple raindrops' should have been included in this collection along with other unreleased unheard classics in motown's vaults.but this compilation does makeup 4 that misstep by including 'little water boy'-a duet with his older mentor clarence paul- the very seldom heard 'with a child's heart'-from his 1966 lp 'uptight'-and also from the 'uptight'album is the upbeat track 'music talk'-and also from 1963 is the funny bright 'monkey talk'-this compilation also includes a few tracks from stevie's 1964 album 'stevie at the beach'-one of my favorite tracks from this album is the beautiful instrumental 'ebb tide'which is so calming and carefree with stevie gliding on clouds with his harmonica with the motown band's cool, calming relaxing groove.this instrumental is so good,i repeat this track over and over again... nonetheless this compilation of stevie wonder as a child genius is good 2 have in your collection...

5 out of 5 stars This was the beginning of a brilliant career.............2004-06-10

Stevie Wonder, or "Little Stevie" the name he went by in the early days of his career, was a musical prodigy (master of the harmonica, soulful singer with a personality, presence and command of songs that was beyond his twelve years). This wonderful little glimpse into the beginning of a R&B master's career contains the songs that made him famous ("Fingertips--Parts 1&2," "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," etc.). Every track on this album is soulful, and the beats range from upbeat and peppy to introspective and full of spirit. I was amazed at the versatility and range of this wonderful artist even before he reached his teens! This album can be enjoyed by people of all ages--from young kids starting out in music to those who have loved Stevie for years. A real treat!

5 out of 5 stars It's soulful Clarence Paul, my dears!.......2004-05-04

brnn64 asked about who that is duetting with Stevie on "Blowin'in the wind". It's his tutor and producer Clarence Paul!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious Stevie fan !.......2001-12-16

This is the only cd in the world that contains one of the most beautiful songs that Stevie Wonder ever recorded. The top 10 R@B hit titled "With a childs heart ". It is a pure soul classic and hasn't been heard on radio probably since it's release in 1966. I searched for this song on cd for 10 years or so. It was always never included on his greatest hits cd's released in America. Everythings great on this cd but it's worth it's weight in gold just to hear the song "With a child's heart " for it's truly, truly, a forgotten classic.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Find classic Stevie.......2001-08-01

Excellent compilation of Stevie Wonder's early period. Granted, he was not that much of a singer as a child, but he damn sure could make that harmonica smoke and inspired me to pick up this instrument as a youngster. Here we have the seldom-heard "Fingertips pt. 1" (most people are familiar with/pt. 2, with the "Everybody Say yeah," etc.). We have the followup "Workout Stevie Workout" where he really sets the mouthorgan on fire near the end, and the long-lost instrumental "Monkey Talk." Stevie gives Dylan's "Blowin in the Wind" some real justice (does anyone know who is singing with Stevie on that one)? But all in all, a treasure for hardcore R&B fans.

5 out of 5 stars Early B.B. King.......2006-11-05

This is a great CD! I had several of these songs on old 45 RPM records that I found in an ancient record shop in New Orleans many years ago. It is wonderful to hear this material with great audio from master tapes. I especially love the primitive distorted guitar sound as opposed to the slicker sound of B's later albums.

4 out of 5 stars A fine compilation of tracks from King's best period.......2004-02-13

"Do The Boogie" collects 20 songs from Riley "Blues Boy" King's 1950s heyday, which was arguably his best period, and certainly his grittiest.

There are plenty of classics here, including "I Got To Find My Baby", "Why I Sing The Blues", "Woke Up This Morning", "When My Heart Beats Like A Hammer", and King's take on "Crying Won't Help You", and his guitar playing is as gritty as it ever was. His style was always more urban than that of, say, Howlin' Wolf or even Muddy Waters, but there are certainly no overly slick blues ballads here, or hideous covers of contemporary pop songs.

This is great West side blues, and there are also a couple of alternate takes here, and a few tough-to-locate items ("Bye Bye Baby", "Dark Is The Night" parts 1 and 2, "Jump With You Baby"), and compiler Ray Topping has gone out of his way to include a number of songs which aren't usually found on B.B. King-compilations.

This album would make a fine companion to one of the many compilations that focuse on King's post-1960 recordings (like "Anthology 1962-98"), and if you add "Live At The Regal" to the mix, you'll have pretty much all you'll ever need from Riley B. "Beale Street Blues Boy" King.
4 1/2 stars - highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any serious blues lover!!!!!!!!.......2003-01-08

If BB King's entire recording catalog consisted solely of the 20 tracks found on this CD he would still be considered one of the greatest vocalist and guitarists ever. Buy this CD, select track 16 and listen to it over and over... then move on to track 17 and do the same. Good Lord!

5 out of 5 stars A Revelation.......2002-06-24

I bought this CD based on my admiration for B.B.'s contribution to U2's "Love Comes to Town." Guess what. I liked "Do the Boogie" better than anything Bono and his lads have done - they knew what they were doing when they asked B.B. to help out. Everything about this CD is great. The generous number of awesome tunes - each one unique and yet a fitting piece in the puzzle.

Frankly, I never heard anything quite like this before. I like Bobby "Blue" Bland's late 50s early 60s songs a lot. This early 50s B.B. sounds similar but even better and more modern. B.B. obviously had very high standards and not just for himself. The whole band sounds great and the other musicians show their very impressive chops. The production values are obviously all there. Yet B.B. didn't whitewash the songs. They still have quite an edge. Only one problem. What could sound as good?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Early B.B. Overview.......1998-11-29

This is perhaps the best single disc overview of B.B.s early 50's material, which also happens to be when B.B. King was at his very best.

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscent of the West Meets East Album.......2002-06-27

If you are only sampling Ravi then you may wan to buy the "West Meets East" Album. This makes a good second; yet it is still worthy of five stars. The mixture of eastern instruments and western structure show up in this album. This is as much Andre Previn as it is Ravi. It is soothing yet carries a predictable tune. Many hybrids as these pieces carry the plus from both cultures. And Ravi does an excellent job of bridging. If you are a purist then you may want to pass over this album. Personally I could keep it on continuous play.

Very satisfying! Great recording of an inspired piece of music. First saw it performed live and have enjoyed the recording since. This is not really getting you into Indian classical music. Rather this is a well-written, well-orchestrated piece of classical music for classical music lovers (not Paul McCartney-pretend or Billy Joel-pretend), but with the featured instrument and themes being based on traditional sitar style. Truly utilizes the characteristics and beauty of the sitar in combination with a normal symphony orchestra as a concerto should.

The music is engaging with much of it peaceful, even bucolic, but not boring.
