When who you are meets who you want to be, the occasion is sometimes unexpected. The journey to this point may elude you but when you think about it for a moment, it all seems perfectly clear. For Lizz Fields these are both true statements. Her own journey to becoming a singer/songwriter has been just that. On stage or in a living room on a sofa, Lizz Fields has an energy about her that is infectious. Most would say it is her girlish charm or down right silliness. Others would mix that with her sexiness or is it her sensuality? Regardless of either or and both, her smile does give much of her away but in the end it is her voice that makes you gasp. ByDayByNight is the title of the independent album by a very independent singer and songwriter by the name of Lizz Fields. It is also the process she took to become this person.

ByDayByNight is an album made up of instrumental sounds, rhythms and strong vocal riffs that are at once extremely jazzy but at the same time original in tone and cadence. As Lizz relates her own tales to the listener, you feel at once a part of the song and also realize that you haven’t heard anything like this with a voice so sultry and smooth. You might suspect this to be a Billie Holiday and A Tribe Called Quest collaboration but no, you just heard Lizz Fields’ debut album, which is to be released October 26, 2004 via ABB Soul, a division of ABB Records. The North American October release will feature four new compositions and remixes of favorites like "I Gotta Go" by DJ Spinna (Beyond Real Productions) and "When I See Love" by ColdFusion (G-Unit, Skillz, Musiq). The new songs will be added to crowd approved composures like "Star Gazer," the bass heavy "Hey," and favorites like "Say the Word" and "Selfish Tendencies". These twelve tracks will be new to most but, loved by all.

To begin to understand ByDayByNight, you should understand what Lizz Fields likes musically. "I like big heavy beats, dark heavy bass. I like crazy ambient ethereal sounds. Sometimes I liken it to these crazy sounds you hear from Tricky, Bjork, or Portishead with hip-hop beats [but] at the same time I like it to be musical [with] changes that aren’t always expected," Lizz notes, "I like minor chords and challenging music, music that’s difficult to sing [like] Say the Word. That song is hard because I am the only one singing what I am singing. The melody I am singing, no one is playing that."

But to truly understand her as an artist, you have to understand her position on being an artist. She envisions herself as a quintessential artist judged not on one mega hit but a body of work that improves and grows as she does as an artist perfecting her craft. Her music is an original blend of jazz over dark hip hop beats and has been capturing hearts, dollars, euros and yens with songs like "I Gotta Go", "Selfish Tendencies" and "Say the Word". Even as she brings forth these melodies and phrases, Fields smiles to herself because these songs that are selling are the same songs that established producers and record labels questioned and didn’t think would take off when she sent them as her demo.

Before becoming the artist known as Lizz Fields, she had to first conquer her fear of singing and find her voice as the student, teacher, set designer and thespian known as Lizz Fields. She was a vocal major at the Philadelphia Creative & Performing Arts High School. Her soprano voice, which we know now to be strong, jazzy, and well controlled, was the same but in high school; she knew that her voice wasn’t like the voice of the shining stars in her high school like Boys II Men or Amel Larrieux. She opted to become the charismatic individual that we see on stage - infectious, silly and honest. Fields knew she loved jazz; Duke Ellington’s Mood Indigo was her anthem. "The song was real smooth and kind of sensual. I thought songs like that were cool. Why doesn’t everybody sing like that? I never forgot the song, that was the Lizz song, but I sang it until I wrote my own songs" Fields recalls. When she found her voice in the church choir it was an epiphany. Lizz made the song fit her but she had other struggles to conquer before she was ready to be who she is now.

The evolution from trepid singer to full-fledged artist wasn’t as clear and paved a path as one might think. ByDayByNight began as a demo that was never intended to be an album. It was intended to showcase the singing and songwriting talent. It became an album when she realized that the patrons of her part time job liked, commented and asked if what they heard was for sale while she played her demo songs. The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

A very complete selection of ceremony music!.......2005-02-02

I am getting married in several months and we couldn't decide what music we wanted at our wedding ceremony. This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!

Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15

I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.

Just one note..........2003-06-07

I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

Poor Quality.......2005-12-05

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

falls short.......2006-08-06

Sure I love the Beatles. And while I don't have much of an ear for classical, there is a lot I like. And I'm a sucker for rock music with real string sections. But this CD just doesn't hold my interest; it sounds like elevator classical. Who'd've thunk that one could make a string arrangement of Yesterday or Yellow Submarine that would bore me?

Perhaps if I could discern the "wittily chopped up [variations comparable to those] which Mozart and Beethoven wrote on the well-known songs of their own day," I'd like it more. But my wife (who plays in a local symphony, and does have an ear for classical motifs) also finds the songs uninspiring.

The only tracks which held my interest were Help and Can't Buy Me Love.

Okay, I have no idea why people are judging this based purely on lablings: quite frankly, it should be about the music, and nothing else.

Now, with that said, I have to say this is one of the most beutiful arrangements for a Band I've ever heard. The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Phil have done a phenominal job at creating something amazing and new out of something amazing and old. I have to say that this is for any fan of the Beatles, classical music, and anything cello related. I'd deffinately suggest the buy, as the entire album is gorgeous.

Oh, and Cello Choirs are probobly the best string ensembles in existance (biased, yes: but that's okay, because cello deserves my bias)

First of all, I LOVE the Beatles, and I LOVE Classical music. Personally I do not care how Amazon lists this CD.
That being said, I have played many arrangements of Beatles songs (mostly for string quartet) and they all leave something to be desired. These arrangements are bright, colorful and imaginative. Some of the songs have quite lengthy introductions that can have even the most devoted Beatles fan without liner notes in hand skipping forward to find out exactly what song they are listening to. I especially loved Norwegian Wood (I almost like it more than the real deal!). I have long been a fan of cello choirs, and for those who can't get enough cello this will be like a trip to heaven! If you like this CD, also try out the London Viola Sound

This is the title of a CD I have by the 12 Cellists Of The Berlin Philharmonic.Obviously the same one with a different sleeve.
Yet anyone who claims to know anything about the Beatles knows that "Lennon/McCartney" was agreed on at the beginning whoever wrote the song

While I am sympathetic to the concerns of the other reviewers' issues with the song credits, with all due respoect to Beatlemanics, they can get a little carried away with Beatles trivia and forget that we're talking about MUSIC, something they neglected entirely. I found this CD to be filled with very creative arrangements, that were beautifully and flawlessly executed. This "Dandy Dozen" puts a spin on the Fab Four that takes them into a different dimension, artistically speaking, far from the dad-whistled muzak that another reviewer mistook it for. My only objection was that the recording quality was not the highest quality, and a little "noisy".

She's Just a Fantastic Singer.......2007-01-18

I have 14 CDs by Doris Day, the equivalent of 25 records. I've heard her in person, and she has one of the purest voices I've ever heard. There's no electronic gimmickry to make her sound that good, no matter the song.

She has an amazing range, and her interpretation of songs is impeccable. I realize that music is subjective, and I'm so old that I think most of what I hear outside of country (omg,did I say that?) is screaming, but if Doris Day isn't the best, she's certainly in the league with the greatest from the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

THIS album takes the place of two of her records that I had, "Day by Day" and "Day by Night." It has the best overall collection and really shows off her natural talent.

And unlike other singers of her era, she knew when to quit. Her voice was even better in the 70s than in the 40s.

I picked up the lp's some three weeks ago of both titles. If you need to go the cd route then I believe you will get more than your money's worth. This lovely woman HAD TALENT! So do your nerves a favor and get back to some time when life was peaceful.

These recordings are wonderful, but the manufacturing is apparently poor. I bought a copy from Amazon and returned it because the right channel in track 17 was obviously distorted. I exchanged it for another copy but it had the same problem. For that to happen there must have been a run of defective CDs.

Many of you will remember Doris from her (silly) movie days. This cd is pretty much prior to that. I love to listen to her syrupie sweet voice serenade me while I have a cocktail after work. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

I listened to the album "Day by Night" years ago when my mother played it on her record player. To me it epitomized all the romance and subtle sentuality that this era stood for. Day by Night is, in my opinion, the most dreamy and best work of Doris Day. Don't miss the double collection, it is sure to send you into a dreamland.
