This is one of his finest comedy discs, and it remains as fresh and funny as ever. Recorded at the height of his standup popularity, the master raconteur's 1968 album To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With is a fine example of the multi-talented veteran's effortless mastery. Cosby discusses "Baseball" and "Conflict" with his usual blend of impishly winsome insight and flat-out yuks. The 27-minute title track, a memorable meditation on the joys and terrors of childhood, is one of his most resonant achievements. --Scott Schinder
Customer Reviews:
I've Laughed for Over 35 Years.......2007-05-19
My mother gave me this album when I was two or three (because I inherited Dad's love of music, I was taught how to handle vinyl at a young age). Only years later did I appreciate how masterful the material was to draw out loud laughs from me as a preschooler, my friends and I as middle schoolers and me as an adult fussy about my comedy. That's multilevel genius, best demonstrated on the title track, which ranks among the greatest routines ever. But he also throws in The Losers, an account of early fatherhood I can't help thinking about and giggling at as I deal with my own perpetual motion two-year-old daughter (who has never seen the belt. But will hear about it.)
To Russell, my brother,Whom I Slept wiith.......2007-04-12
The funniest, truest narrative on sibling behavior I have ever heard. I loved it when it first released and was delighted to find it in cd. A gift to my nephews whose antics are mirrored in this album.
Bill Cosby's sterling performance, comedy without profanity, great man.
With laughter and Aloha Tracy McPherson
Bedtime Cosby.......2007-02-01
"To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With" (1968) was Bill Cosby's 6th live comedy album. From the 5 Bill Cosby discs I have, it's my least favorite. There are 5 tracks on it. Though it's interesting to hear Bill open a show, I don't really like "Baseball" or "Conflict" much. My favorite is "The Losers", which follows up on "Two Daughters" from Revenge (1967), about his baby daughters Erica and Erin. Adam and Eve's "The Apple" would be done as "It's the Women's Fault" on "It's True! It's True!" (1969) with more material about mothers, though "The Apple" version is a bit livelier. I don't listen much to the 27 minute "To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With" story. Don't get why it's so popular, but it's okay. It's more atmospheric than anything. I'd recommend "Revenge" for newcomers to the CDs.
Sleepover at Bill's house.......2006-07-30
There is no better way to get to "know" someone than by listening to their "remember when..." and "did I tell about the time..." stories. The "Russell" track brings you right into Cosby's childhood room; its like 'spending the night at Bill's house.'
Cosby is such a great storyteller, that after you listen to this CD, you will feel as if you know him and his brother personally. The other tracks, are good also but not as memorable as the Russell segment.
Of course you will laugh your head off. Highly recommended. Appropriate for most ages.
Good but dated fun.......2006-01-29
Got this for my wife. She wanted it because her tape of it had worn out. The fondness for her was her memories of her family listening to a record of 'To Russell,....' together. I listened to it and found it to be hilarious. My only criticism is that they need a brief glossary guide to some of the language, for example bread another name for money in the dialogue. Otherwise it was fun to listen to with my wife.

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.
Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
An underrated musical.......2006-03-16
This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.
I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.
Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26
I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.
Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12
I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.
What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.
All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.
a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26
i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.
off the beaten path.......2003-07-10
I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

real music returns.......2006-07-03
thanks for your help in getting me back to real music i enjoy the earlier music of my time.
early pop/smooth jazz.......2005-12-26
This disc is one of those rare gems you must own. Aside from being a great vocalist, Gino had a stellar cast of jazz musicians, and by
today's standards, this is one greatsmooth jazz record. Every track
is great. I had the LP and another thing about thing about this album is I always found the sound quality superb. It is a must for
your collection.
kerry warthen-mr. music.......2005-05-23
know one can go wrong with anything gino vannelli, writes he is one of the best and every album/cd that he has made is the best
and don't forget his brother joe vannelli, is super great his arrangements are the best and he is a great musician, the both of them.brother to brother is totally a great cd but if you are like me a long time gino, fan and all of his brothers just buy all of his projects and i know you will be very pleased. I have everything by Gino in my library
Gino's the man.......2005-02-24
I'd been a fan to Gino since I heard his singles "I Just Wanna Stop" and "Living Inside Myself" instantly. I actually love how he sounds. He just combined jazz-rock into pop music or he just combined jazz, rock, pop, a lil R&B into his music. Enuff said.
Ok back to the album I luv every song on this albums but my favorites are: I Just Wanna Stop, River Must Flow, Feel Like Dying, Brother to Brother, Wings of Life, The Evil Eye, and People I Belong To.
Those are songs I play back to back and sing along with. God bless Gino for a wonderful classic. This by far is my favorite album of all-time and Gino is still my top influence of rock history and music culture. Along w/ Steely Dan, Phil Collins, Billy Joel, Elton John, etc. are among my biggest influences in rock 'n roll.
Vannelli still sounds great........2003-03-05
I bought this cassette in the 70's. I just pulled it out, and went back in time listening to it. It still sounds as great as it did almost 30 years ago. Don't miss this one.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Louisiana native Tab Benoit has been slinging his swamp-R&B-blues-rock concoction for the better part of 15 years, and from the sound of this disc's opening two tunes, it seems that little besides his backing band has changed. But when the title track kicks in with sorrowful fiddle, crying pedal steel (also played by Benoit), and a lovely, lonely honky-tonk melody, it's clear the singer/guitarist has decided to visit some unique territory. Country stalwarts Jim Lauderdale and Billy Joe Shaver swing by to provide duet vocals for Benoit's versions of their songs. Even Hank Williams Sr.'s "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle" gets covered as Benoit finds the blues at the heart of the country standard. Those who are not county lovers need not be concerned that Benoit has gone all George Jones on them. He still grinds out slabs of tough bayou rocking in the crackling "So High" and the opening "Pack It Up." There's also a heartbreaking, loungey, slow blues ("Somehow") and a soul-seared cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" that shows how effective Benoit is as an interpretive vocalist. The funky Little Feat/Neville Brothers-styled "Can't Do One More Two-Step" truly brings it home on a diverse outing that stretches boundaries and adds depth to Benoit's already impressive roots. --Hal Horowitz

It's hot, it's cool, it's cajun, blues, soul, folk and country performed like no other can. Tab Benoit is a humble and unfortunately under-recognized artist who blinds you live and lights you up with his recordings. This is the kind of stuff we've been waiting for. No more bored musicians. Tab handles a guitar with the ease of SRV, the soul of Jimi and the heart of the Bayou.
very good.......2006-11-06
A morning jazz show (WRTC) played Pack it up, Bring it on home to me & Why are people like that and I bought this CD the next day. I love Sam Cook songs as those whom sing them. A little slower than most sing Bring it on home, it was brrillian! As is all of this CD! Reminded me of Chris Tofield but with a Louisiana twang & for certain our country influence! I'm 45 & thought they no longer make music this good. You'll like this!
Artists influence apparent.......2006-06-15
Tab's previous albums had acute cajun and root influence. On this CD the instrument choice and powerful deep vocals made this apparent. Blues and country fans alike will appreciate the artisty and song choice. This album not only keeps Tab's current fans, but also creates a possible new audience. Overall great sound quality and fantastic buy.
Interesting, if not misleading title!.......2006-06-02
Tab Benoit is one of my favorite blues artists and I particularly like it when he mixes the blues with a little Cajun flavor from the Bayou. That being said, I was taken by surprise at the lack of blues on this release. The CD consists of mostly hillside country music complete with pedal steel, banjo and fiddle. Something tells me that if he titled this recording to reveal its true contents, sales would be somewhat dismal. Tab's tip of the hat to the songs which he knew as a child will be better appreciated by some country fans but, it is sure to leave blues fans a little unsatisfied. Especially knowing that we may have to wait another year or two for a suitable new release.
Warning: This is not a blues CD.......2006-05-11
Don't let the title confuse you. This is not a blues CD. Its country. Tab Benoit writes in the liner notes this is a "special project" of all of his "early musical influences" "especially early country music."
It's well recorded. It has some nice music. It has fiddles, banjos and pedal steel guitars. But it isn't a "brother to the blues." It's only a distant cousin.

Customer Reviews:
A gift to us from the surviving Van Zant brothers.Excellent..........2007-04-10
This is a great sounding CD...the production is very good, meaning it sounds good at low or loud volumes. Musically, these two Southern boys have collectively done what I think the revamped Skynyrd has failed to do;record a CD in which every song is really good. Right Side Up is listed as being inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan for getting his life together. The brothers are only given credit for the vocals and writing the songs. Hat's off to the players that contributed to this effort. The guitar playing is VERY bluesy, while also sounding distinctly "southern".
I think Ronnie Van Zant would be extremely proud of his sibling's effort.
I'd buy this again...you should get you a copy yourself.
Keep the faith...
This would be an excellent choice.......2007-02-13
I do intend on ordering this cd to add to my collection and the price is the best available
What talent came from this one family wow!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-03
This is one of the best cds I have ever heard. There is not a bad song on the whole cd. I can say for sure that these two voices together blows me away. What talent this family has I would love to hear something that had all three of these Van Zant brothers together. This cd reminds me of a cross between the Marshall Tucker Band and Skynyrd. I just love it. I hope that they continue to put music out together like this cd. Cannot get enough of it.
Brother to Brother.......2006-02-22
This is an excellant CD! If you're a fan of Van Zant you already know how good they are, and if you haven't listened to them yet, then you're really missing out!
An attractive and melodic effort.......2003-12-18
Johnny Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie Van Zant (38 Special) joined forces and released the album "Brother to brother" in 1998. The musical approach is southern rock but it has a bit of a commercial touch to it. Songs like "Show me", "I'm a want you kinda man", and "Right side up" have the potential of becoming hits if they were included on the radio station's play lists. In "That was yesterday" you get a light feeling of Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and his way of writing songs, while "Black bottom road" reminds of Tony Joe White. Most of the time it's mid tempo songs, but the brothers had the good taste of including a real rocker by the name of "Downright and dangerous". There's also some ballads on this disc, but apart from "Can't say it loud enough" they are not thrilling, and neither "Brother to brother" or "Friend" stand out as something more than the ordinary. Over all, this is a melodic and attractive effort from the Van Zant brothers and the album is a good compliment to both Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special. But a warning may be raised; if you're way into southern rock of a harder kind you might find this album too soft.

Customer Reviews:
a worship experience .......2007-02-01
I, too, owned albums by both artists prior to the release of this one, and was intrigued by the combination. I've owned this CD for years and am re-discovering the beauty contained inside. The musicianship is superb; the music and lyrics are divinely-inspired. I've been a church-goer all my life, but I am hard-pressed to think of more than a handful of Sunday morning services that were as truly worshipful as this music.
Pleasing to the ears, soothing to the heart.......2005-05-15
I'm not all that familiar with the music of John Michael Talbot, but if you like the music of Michael Card even a little bit, then you must have this CD. In it, the two men sing each other's songs, at times singing together. I was especially pleased with the opening song, "One Faith," apparently one of JMT's songs. My personal favorite Michael Card song is "Love Crucified Arose," and I really wish it had been included on here. Also, JMT has such a fine, poetic voice that I think he would have complimented that song very nicely. Fortunately, my other favorite Michael Card song, "Come to the Table," is included on this CD, and they both sing it. It sounds wonderful.
Overall, this is a great CD to listen to for pleasure, or worship, or to simply reflect on the Word of God. I highly recommend it.
Beautiful.. It brought tears to my eyes..........2005-03-13
As a "born again" Christian who entered the Catholic Church 9 years by the leading of the Holy Spirit ,it brought tears to my eyes listening to these two men sing and harmonize together. It was like a foretaste of heavenly worship, when all divisions cease and there will only be the unified voice of the true worshippers worshipping God in spirit and in truth. I have enjoyed John Michael Talbot's music for years, but was not familiar with Michael Card. This album appears to be some of each artists' songs. The music is so beautiful and very stirring to the spirit. (My personal story: As I was driving to an evangelical church service, the Holy Spirit urged me to turn into the driveway of a Catholic church along the way. I continued on, arguing "No way - are you kidding?", but the resulting discomfort in my spirit caused me to turn back. I walked in and the service had just started. The passion and the power of the prayers blew me away despite the fact that the service was led by a elderly priest who read the prayers with the emotional involvement of someone reading the telephone directory. When I made a commitment to become Catholic months later, my greatest surprise - since my ancestors were probably Buddhist - was that entering the Catholic church felt like a homecoming to me.)
Wow! What a blessing!.......2004-12-02
I've known of the music of John Michael Talbot for many years, but have listened to Michael Card but recently. So I was surprised when I found this listed at Amazon, especially the price!
But Brothers and Sisters... It is worth it; every penny. I only hope that they re-issue it soon, I want to buy copies for friends and family.
Enjoy!
Great CD from two great songwriters and singers.......2004-07-21
I have been a fan of Michael Card since the early eighties and own most of his CD's. He is undoubtably one of the best scriptural songwriters, singer and musician. From his early works which deal with the birth and life of Jesus to his album of songs taken from the Old Testament "The Ancient Faith" and songs dealing with the end times "Unveiled Hope" he has covered most Christian subjects in his music.
I loved his introduction of the celtic sounds in this album, which he carried over to his album "Poeima". I thought that their voices blended magnificently and their choice of songs were outstanding.
After reading some reviews, I discovered, for the first time, that Michael John Talbot was of the Catholic faith and I was distressed by the views that this was a sell-out by Michael Card. People who think that just because the Catholic teachings on salvation, justification and santification are so different to ours means that there are no 'born again' Christians in the Catholic Church appalled me! Do they not know that there has been a huge evangelical movement amongst the Catholics? It reminded me so much of the many Christians years ago, who were of the opinion that the Communists were the Anti-Christ the bible talks about. Such narrow minded thinking is a sad thing in the Christian world.
If you want to listen to something different and uplifting, I would recommend this CD as being just that.

What progressive hip hop is supposed to sound like.......2007-07-03
This isn't futuristic space rap, and this also isn't your typical classic boom bap. This is the combination of the two: the best of both worlds. It's booming beats with a twist of future funk combined with mc Jael's in-your-face delivery of humorous and relateable lyrics. The fact that this more-than-solid ep can be purchased for as little as a penny should be enough to inspire everyone reading this right now to grab it while it's still so fairly (though unfairly to Brother Reade) priced. This is what hip hop is supposed to sound like in 2007. Too bad Brother Reade's the only group that realizes it.
