Better still, select its companion volume as well, and you'll have the complete organ works of Jehan Alain (1911-1940). Here is music that repays repeated listening. You'll not find organ music that is mainly bombast, and special effects; you'll find the quieter, more subtle potentialities of a large pipe organ used in music that is full of intriguing harmonies and gentle colourings.

Alain should have been one of the greatest composers of the century, based on his early output. His style had incredible virtuosity to it, combining secular and religiously based concepts. Had he survived the 2nd World War (He was killed in 1940 by a Nazi bomb raid- a mere 29 years old) he would likely have surpassed his contemporary Olivier Messiaen and been the greatest composer of Organ music of this century.

Such bragging on my part has as its backing, the output of Alain's work that we do have to enjoy today. This volume (the 2nd of 2) released by Naxos features the excellent work of organist Eric Lebrun and the Cavaille-Coll organ of the Church of Saint-Antoine des Quinze-Vingts in Paris. As I explained in my review of Vol.1, this type of organ is exactly the type Alain wanted his pieces played on, and Lebrun, (who studied under Alain's sister, the famed Maire-Claire Alain) showcases his complete understanding of Alain's sonic world and does it absolute justice.

As with Vol.1, Alain's works are hauntingly beautiful, with his "3 Danses" being my personal favorite piece of his. The use of unresolved chords for effect is somewhat reminiscent of the opening movement of Beethoven's "5th" symphony, while its virtousity reminds me somewhat of Bach's "Passagalia and Fugue in C minor." Intentional or not, the effect is amazing. Also of note are the "Variations sur L'Hymme 'Lucis Creator.' Lebrun is at his best on these pieces, bringing a whole new life and vitality to them. Stunning.

Because it is a Naxos release, money is no excuse to not purchase this, and its companion 2 cd, disc. Other than Maire-Claire Alain, one will not likely find more competent readings of Alain's works than Lebrun's. Fans of organ music will love it, and I think you will, as well.

5 MINUTES OF TRUE ROCKABILLY.......2003-08-28

I loved this CD.Natures Goodness,Roswell and Maybe Baby are great rockin Rockabilly tracks,hard to believe this band is not from the 1950s.
They also play some swing tracks which are great.The lead guitar and piano play are a joy to listen to.
This is one of the best CDs that I have listen to.

It doesnt get any better than this. One of the best bands of this genre, these guys have nailed it! Here's the catch, they are from FINLAND! They play American music better than most Americans! The band is all top notch players, the recording is totally authentic and the singer has a great voice. I was skeptical of their cover of Trouble Bound (Billy Lee Riley)...but it is spot on! This disc is a must have for any fan of Rockabilly, retro or just plain old quility rock and roll!

Experience the music of a 20th century original.......2001-01-26

Jehan Alain was a French organist and composer who was tragically killed while fighting the Germans near Saumur in 1940. At the time of his death, he was only 29 years old. Despite his youth, he left behind a significant body of organ music that could be mistaken for no other composer. This two CD set, running almost two and a half hours, includes all his published works, including some that have only recently come to light. Unlike many French composers who wrote for the organ on the vastest of canvases, many of Alain's works run five minutes or less.

One thing is for certain: Kevin Bowyer has technique to burn. He also gets wonderful sounds from the Marcussen organ at Tonbridge School. In fact, the recorded sound is excellent and atmospheric throughout. With one caveat, this is a wonderful introduction to the music of Alain. There is much here that is readily accessible to lovers of organ music including, but certainly not limited to, the two Chorals, Dorien and Phrygien; the two sets of variations, on Lucis Creator and on a theme by Clement Jannequin (although that attribution is in doubt); and the mystical pieces, Le Jardin Suspendu and the Postlude pour l'Office de Complies. There are also works that do not make their wonders readily apparent, but are well worth coming to know. Then, of course, there is Alain's most famous work, Litanies.

And it is Bowyer's performance of that piece about which I have reservations. He plays it breathtakingly fast--again, no question about technique--but the tempo is so rapid in places that, to me at least, the music sounds hectic. Repeated notes at the beginnings of phrases blur together, so that unless you knew that the notes were repeated, you'd hardly be able to tell. When he gives the music room to breathe, the performance is fine; if only he had done so throughout the piece! This performance, although perfectly acceptable, does not rise to the same level as the rest of this recording. And if you like your toccatas astonishingly fast, this performance will not disappoint.

So, if you only want Litanies and have no interest in Alain's other organ works, you'd be better off to purchase one of the many collections that include that piece. However, if you want a survey of the organ works of this original master, there is no need to hesitate.

Ezequiel Viñao was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1960. At age 20, encouraged by the legendary American pianist Earl Wild, and through the auspices of the United Nations, he moved to New York City where he still lives. At the time, in addition to his activities as a concert pianist, Viñao immersed himself in the task of blending the classical instrumental tradition with computer generated sound worlds. In 1987 he was invited to the Festival d'Avignon to work with the late Olivier Messiaen. The result of these explorations was La Noche de las Noches. These "seven concentrated, evocative pieces, of austerely theatrical force" (The London Times), written for string quartet and live electronics, were selected by the European Broadcasting Union for over 100 broadcasts throughout the world. Other works from this period include The Voices of Silence, a four movement symphony for computers ("always beautiful, exquisitely sustained music" Express-News, San Antonio) and a series of works based on the twelfth century epic poem The Conference of the Birds. Scored for solo instruments and computers these pieces pushed the limits of man-machine interaction to new levels of virtuosity. Performances throughout Europe, in Japan and America were met with critical acclaim. The New York Newsday, reviewing a performance at the Museum of Modern Art, found the music "fascinating" and the computer manipulations as producing "a wonderful array of sounds." In 1992, the Boston Pro Arte Orchestra commissioned a work with live electronics to commemorate the discovery of America. But after El Sueño de Cristobal, "a hallucinatory vision of the sleeping admiral's dream voyage marked by skewed dance rhythms and accumulating textures of fevered intensity" (The Boston Herald), Mr. Viñao's interest begun to move away from the computer sound world.

In 1996, the composer's first monograph, at New York's Carnegie Recital Hall, was hailed by Jed Distler (Classical Pulse/Piano Today) for NCR: "what's immediately clear is the (music's) authority and sophistication", "the torrential energy", "there is nothing generic about this highly gifted composer, whose music, whichever way it turns, is always vibrant and alive."

Mr.Viñao has collaborated with major presenting organizations including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York; the Kennedy Center in Washington; the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society; the Aspen and San Antonio Festivals; the Musikverein in Vienna; the Almeida Theatre in London; the Scottish National Orchestra Centre in Glasgow; the Presences and Bourges Festivals in France; the Helsinki Biennale; the Diligentia Hall in The Hague; the Shobi Institute in Tokyo; with musicians such as Dennis Russell Davies and Joseph Kalichstein; with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the American Composers Orchestra; as well as with chamber groups like Da Camera of Houston; Speculum Musica; the Smith Quartet and the Brentano String Quartet. His music has received awards from the International Music Council in Paris; the Argentinean Academy of Fine Arts; the New York Foundation for the Arts; the Djerassi Foundation in California; UNESCO's Rostrum of Composers, as well as three consecutive prizes from the International Society for Contemporary Music. I wish there were more chamber music available by this terrific composer, but this is certainly worth having. The piano trio isn't yet one I've completely digested, but the piano etudes are wonderful - rich and seductive and the equal of any, including Ligeti's cycle as recorded by Aimard. Sumptuous, glittering, spectacular little jewels, they reflect Vinao's famously precocious gifts as a pianist as well as his compositional talents.

The powerful, evocative music of Argentinian-born, Juilliard-trained composer E.V. is a real find. His music consists of small packages of pungent, expressive ideas, concisely and intelligently laid out (. . .) The music on this disc displays the composer's ability to write idiomatically for the medium at hand (. . .) Vinao has created music that is intensely communicative without sacrificing invention and originality, which is no mean feat. Excellent performances and recording.

Historic Violin Recording.......2005-07-29

Although interesting from an historical point of view, I found these CD's almost unlistenable due to the quality of the recordings (old). There is also an unrelenting hiss in the background.

Violin History in Sound -- Always Interesting.......2005-03-27

It's always interesting to listen to old violin recordings. You
get violin history in sound bytes and can hear for yourself how
violin playing has developed. You can also see how fiendishly difficult violin playing can be even for the best representatives of their respective eras. But was it really fair
to the rest of the pack to include Fritz Kreisler? Once he arrives on the scene everyone else becomes a dark backdrop to his
effulgence. Even the modern violinists included suffer in comparison when all he did in this collection was to play one of his trifling ditties. The suavity of his performance make so many others sound like mechanical creaking engines. I would buy this just for historical reasons, though I already own most of the 78s already. Notably missing in this collection are Mischa Elman, Max Rosen, Efrem Zimbalist, Jacques Thibaud and many others. Vasa Prihoda, Tossy Spivakovsky, Ruggiero Ricci, Oistrakh the elder, and Zino Francescatti complete Kreisler's court and are worthy to bear his arms in this set. Buy it before it goes OOP.

A Valuable Item to Collect.......2001-03-10

This is an extremely valuable recording for anyone interested in the different schools of violin playing in the early 20th century. So many violinists are represented and it is awe-inspiring to realise you are listening to the great masters! The program notes by Tully Potter are very detailed and they make very interesting and informative reading, with equal dedication to each violinist (some smaller names are included with the bigger ones). On the down side, there are problems with some of the noisiness of the actual recording, but that is to be expected with such old material. I think some of the performances don't carry well in the recording process - seeing these people perform would have been very different. Nevertheless it makes for thought-provoking on how performance practices and styles have changed in such a short amount of time. I thoroughly recommend this historical document.
