Four years after her return to recording after a much-publicized battle with drug addiction, Natalie Cole found herself unexpectedly experiencing a virtual reinvention as a bestselling artist and performer, thanks to a project she had longed to do for many years. Unforgettable with Love was the soulful singer's way of paying tribute to her late, legendary father, Nat "King" Cole, and marked her label debut for Elektra Records. Cole, Elektra, and the album's producers--including then-husband Andre Fischer and Tommy LiPuma--were rewarded with a multiple-Grammy-winning set that sold an astonishing 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Cole's selections varied from obvious choices like "Mona Lisa," "Nature Boy," "Route 66," and "Straighten Up and Fly Right"--all major hits for her father in the '50s--to more obscure parts of King Cole's repertoire, such as "Avalon" and "Non Dimenticar." The crowning glory was a "duet" with her father, electronically created using his original vocal, which helped expand Cole's audience dramatically and took her career to a new plateau. --David NathanCustomer Reviews:
The apple most definitely doesn't fall far from the tree!.......2007-06-20
Cole is very effective singing the standards made famous by her father and realizes that his stamp is emblazoned on most of them. She never tries to imitate him, just offers her own spin on such gems as "Mona Lisa," "Smile," "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Nature Boy," and "Our Love is Here to Stay."
Of course, no musical collection would be complete without the landmark and one-of-a-kind (at the time) pairing of father and daughter on "Unforgettable."
The song is just as the title says and worthy of the praise it has garnered since its release.
I can't believe that I didn't buy this album sixteen years ago.
Where was my brain???
Unforgettable.......2006-12-03
The CD starts off with the romantic "The Very Thought Of You;" this simultaneously suggests that Natalie is thinking of her father as she introduces the CD with this first song. The next two songs, "Paper Moon" and "Route 66" pick up the pace somewhat and Natalie does these songs to perfection.
Other great songs on this album include the Oscar winning, haunting ballad entitled "Mona Lisa;" the playful and joyous love song simply entitled "L-O-V-E;" "Smile," a Charlie Chaplin classic; a guy's romance song called "That Sunday That Summer;" the medley of "For Sentimental Reasons/Tenderly/Autumn Leaves;" "Our Love Is Here To Stay" and the closing grand finale, "Unforgettable," which features Natalie singing this as a duet with her late father using electronic mixing equipment.
The overall effect on your soul is guaranteed to be incredible. I also like the fact there are some of Nat King Cole's lesser known songs including "Avalon."
Look for David "Fathead" Newman to do a great sax solo on "Tenderly" and "Autumn Leaves;" Joe Sample plays piano on "Paper Moon" and "Orange Colored Sky." Great!
The liner notes include an informative essay by Roy Trakin who gets help from Natalie in her own words all along the way; and there are interesting black and white photographs of Natalie with her family when she was a young child. The liner notes also provide the song credits and there's a whopping four pages of acknowledgements and "thank yous."
This is one classy show.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals, fans of Natalie Cole and fans of Nat King Cole; fans of pop R&B and even fans of R&B/Soul.
ENJOY!!!
What everyone should listen to before entering dreamland.......2006-11-06
Heart & Soulful.......2006-08-29
Tender yet soulful, Natalie Cole brings us an updated collection of her father's songs from the 50's that he would have been proud of. For anyone who loves all of those great standards, this is a must for your collection. Natalie brings her own polished style to each one of these classics.
The opener "The Very Thought Of Your" is a sweeping ballad. "Smile" is a grand tribute. "Lush Life" is just that.....lush! "Avalon"s uptempo arrangement is the perfect backdrop for Natalie's vocal. "Nature Boy" is tenderly sweet. The duet of Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole is a classic that will live on forever.
Buy and enjoy!
MUSIC 101 FOR YOUNG "MAROONS".......2006-03-19
From the dreamy, shimmering strings that open this album, to the unforgettable duet between Papa Cole and his talented daughter, Natalie, which closes it, 'UNFORGETTABLE: WITH LOVE' is a gorgeous example of recorded art. It's hard for me to believe that anyone with any musical sense could still be unfamiliar with this hugely popular set, but if you are that someone, then STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT: Get your copy today because it's ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE!
Aside from Natalie Cole's expressive and clear as a Tiffany's crystal water glass vocals, the success of this album lies in Tommy LiPuma's production which flawlessly blends romantic ballads with flat-out joyous Swing numbers, and the updated arrangements of Nat King Cole's hits of decades past, primarily provided by Andre Fischer, Bill Holman, and the deeply soulful Johnny Mandel.
But returning to Natalie's voice: My, oh my, was this gal ever turned on by the concept of this emotional project. On the love ballads, her seductive voice takes you by the hand and pulls you down softly into a gently swaying field of clover and fragrant lavender (e.g., THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU; OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY; and my favorite, THAT SUNDAY THAT SUMMER). But that voice of hers is just as capable of kicking you right in the seat of the pants when it soars through the atmosphere on the energetic Swing tunes that blast off like rockets to distant galaxies! Crank up ORANGE COLORED SKY, AVALON, ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE, and THOU SWELL. You think your favorite "Alternative" band rocks harder? Think again! Yeah, it's driven by horns instead of electric guitars, but it's the same intensity, just far superior musicianship. Now you know why this Hard Rock junkie from the 1970s eventually turned to Jazz instead.
And speaking of instrumentalists: You've got Ray Brown on bass; Joe Sample on piano; Chuck Findley on trumpet; and Pete Christlieb and David "Fathead" Newman on saxophones. Folks, these are some of the best in the business!
And as if all this wasn't enough, you've got the beautifully haunting and philosophical, NATURE BOY on this set - a song that contains the poignant lyric that actually offers the true meaning of life: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to Love and be Loved in return."
HEY YOU! Yeah you - the doofus with the baseball cap on sideways and the untied shoelaces dragging on the ground (Gomer Pyle was the first guy to wear a cap sideways, and you look every bit as "cool" as he did).
You think "music" goes KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!? Wrong, dude. Sit down and give Natalie Cole a listen with your girlfriend beside you - the one with the gold bar through her eyebrow and the tattoo on her chest. (Man! She's uglier and more masculine looking than an AWOL sailor on a two-week binge!) This is what a soul sista with REAL talent can do, kiddies! (If I'm right, does it really matter that I'm also a music dogmatist?)
Recording her versions of her Dad's standards on 'UNFORGETTABLE: WITH LOVE' was obviously a very sentimental project for Natalie; the album tugs at my heartstrings, too. It was a birthday gift from my Ma (may she rest in Peace), and it contains the bittersweet, SMILE - the first song my Pa used to get my attention while he was "dying" in the hospital. Since his "death", he has contacted me innumerable times by using the music of Nat King Cole. (No, your loved ones don't really "die", and yes, they can reach you if you're paying attention with Faith.)
Accompanying the CD is a booklet with 8 neat photos and extensive liner notes that include Natalie's lovely acknowledgment of God's blessings in her life. [*Very cool, Cole!] I'd have given this album 5 Stars, but the great music comes to an end every seventy-three minutes and fifteen seconds.

An appreciable leap forward in almost every fashion from the group's first trio of albums, The Unforgettable Fire is its first with the production team of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. And while they take a strong hand in wrestling U2's music out of the mainstream and into a more individualistic area, it's the songs themselves that demand a more subtle approach. Moody gems such as "A Sort of Homecoming" and the entrancing "Bad" set the table for more explosive fare such as "Pride," "Wire," and the title track. This is the album that made U2 a career act, showing that their music could grow by leaps and bounds, even at the hand of another, without sacrificing its soul. --Daniel DurchholzAmazon.com
The Unforgettable Fire finds U2 caught between the taut angry rock of War and the kinetic, spiritual energy of The Joshua Tree. That's not a bad place to be, but like any crossroads it has its moments of indecision. "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "Wire", and the heroic "Bad" rank with their finest work. "4th of July" and "Elvis Presley and America" do not; hence this album's unstable foothold in their canon. Its strengths make it a must for fans, but its weaknesses make War, Joshua Tree, or Achtung Baby a better place to start. --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:
MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LAB HAS SUCCEEDED AGAIN BY ADDING NEW ADDITIONAL LIFE TO THE LEGENDARY UNFORGETTABLE FIRE ALBUM BY U2........2007-04-25
U2 will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most legendary all-time greatest sacred classic anthems ever. Following the extremely successful releases of both, the "WAR" and the live "UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY" albums in 1983, the band comprising of lead singer and frontman Paul Hewson A.K.A. Bono, guitarist David Howell Evans A.K.A. The Edge, drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. and bassist Adam Clayton, would still feel motivated in recording the ultimate Rock album. It would be during this period that U2 would head back into the recording studio and lay down the tracks for what would turn out to be the album I'm about to review for you now. When U2 came out of the recording studio with the finished and completed acetate and handed the finished product into Island Records, Islnds Records would release this album as the legendary masterpiece, "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" album in 1984. "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" album should definitely rank as one of the all-time greatest albums ever recorded in Rock n' Roll history. "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" album should also mark as one of U2'S many greatest contributions, achievements and accompliments in Rock n' Roll history. In my opinion, "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" is without a doubt, a true testament of the pure musical genius and creativity of four extremely talented masterminds. "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of U2 to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. The legendary masterpiece "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" album from 1984 begins with the fast soft hard Rocker "A Sort Of Homecoming," the blistering and firey hard Rockin' anthem dedicated in the name of love to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Pride (In The Name Of Love)," the incredible fast paced Rocker "Wire," the fast and beautiful soothing Rocker "The Unforgettable Fire," the slow and beautifully soft mild Rocker "Promenade," the mystical sounding, rugged and bass pounding song "4th Of July," one of the most beautifully written slow Rockin' anthems ever, "Bad," the breathtaking synthesized hard Rocker "Indian Summer Sky," the rare and mysterious sounding acoustic Rocker "Elvis Presley And America" and the beautiful slow song well sung by Bono, "MLK." May I also add add that Bono's strong and powerful lead vocals were in perfect form when he laid down the tracks for this legendary album. The Edge's legendary guitar riffs and licks were arranged brilliantly making his guitar playing the true stuff that is made of Rock legend. Drummer Mullen and bassist Clayton contributed their talents perfectly by combining, solidifying and complimenting the band's sound giving it a raw harmonizing feeling. With this sound, U2 would take their talents and creativity to another level unimagined.
Overall, this is one great legendary U2 masterpiece album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard U2 fan, a devout music collector or a music historian. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of U2, I would highly suggest to you in purchasing the first four albums before you purchase this album. Each of U2'S first four albums (One is live) tells stories with each album taking right where the other left off. If you do not want to go through the trouble of buying the first four albums, you may want to consider checking out and researching further into the many U2 greatest hits compilation albums that you might feel is right for you to purchase. Either way you choice, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own U2 music collection. You can do all of your researching and purchase as many of the U2 album(s) that you may want on either Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If possible, purchase this legendary masterpiece album in the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING series version by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, you'll be glad that you did in the long run.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" in the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING series by M.F.S.L. has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" treasure album in the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING / ULTRADISC II (The Gain System) format series by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is now out of print making it officially, a collector's item. You can still find this legendary masterpiece album advertised for sale from time to time on Amazon com. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan, devout music collector or music historian would want to be without.
In closing, U2's "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" would be released in 1984 to highly critically acclaim. Soon after, U2 would quickly embark on a new World Tour promoting the album in what would turn out to be one of their greatest tours ever. At this point in the band's career, U2 is rising faster like a shooting star than ever before. With this in mind, U2 has forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam. Thanks for the great memories with still many more to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. U2 RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

A Developmental Album.......2007-03-13
The results remain uneven to this date.
"Pride" is the showcase of this album and a staple today, a frank and specific showcase of Dr. King; the title track and "MLK" also are direct references to the civil rights leader. But the album's reamining tracks are muddy and seem to wander a bit. My feeling to this day is that the band's subsequent efforts such as "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby" would not have worked as well as they did without the commitment to experiment that is evident throughout this album. The results of their forays are not immediately apparent when you listen to "The Unforgettable Fire" - but it would be in the 20 years to come.

The title of this recording is doubly significant. While the late guitarist's interpretation of Irving Gordon's immortal composition is certainly representative of this collection of standards, it's Joe Pass himself who must be considered unforgettable. A master of technique, Pass first gained prominence as an industrious studio musician in the early '60s. After years as a sideman with George Shearing, Benny Goodman, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others, Pass worked as a solo artist until his death in 1994. This batch of classics performed on the acoustic guitar was recorded in 1992 and displays the man's accomplished fingerpicking technique and strength as a soloist. From emotive interpretations of "Autumn Leaves" and "Moonlight in Vermont" to his bopping version of Monk's "'Round Midnight," this is timeless Pass. --Mitch MyersCustomer Reviews:

Joe Pass is "Unforgettable" in this unique CD........2005-11-01
Seventeen tracks, ranging from 2:29 to 4:13 in length, showcase Pass's guitar technique as he plays his own versions of jazz and pop standards, from the romantic "Autumn Leaves, and the beautifully adapted "Unforgettable," to "The Very Thought of You," with the melody in the bass, jazz riffs in the treble, and a surprising change from a soft, slow pace to a jazzier, stronger beat near the end.
Of special note here is "Stardust," which, unlike several other songs here, truly benefits from the solo guitar treatment, associated as it is with Hoagy Carmichael on solo piano, rather than with big bands and big orchestral treatments. As Pass runs his variations up and down the scale, keeping his melody at the forefront, he gives an interpretation worthy of Carmichael's original.
Guitar students will marvel at Pass's talent, his originality, and his ability to make one instrument sound like a whole band, while those whose interest is less technical and more geared to the overall mood of the music will appreciate the quiet and interesting variations to traditional melodies. Pass's ability to be original without being loud and intrusive makes this a wonderfully relaxing CD to play in the background all day long. n Mary Whipple

Brilliant compilation of Vikki's music.......2005-04-18
Vikki's first significant success came with He's a rebel, which made the top ten in Australia. It should have been a huge hit for in Britain and America, but Phil Spector heard the song and arranged for the Crystals to record it and they had the British and American hit. Phil Spector and the Crystals were later on the wrong end of such opportunism when they were too late to record It's my party - Lesley Gore hastily released her version as a single, depriving the Crystals of a huge international hit.
Despite that setback, Vikki built a reputation as an albums artist before finally securing a major international hit with It must be him, a translation of a French song written by Gilbert Becaud. Sadly, this was Vikki's only major English-language hit although she had a few others, notably With pen in hand (written by Bobby Goldsboro and also included here).
Among the many other excellent tracks here are Mirror, How does the wine taste and Bye bye blackbird. Vikki shows that she is a brilliant interpreter of other people's song on By the time I get to Phoenix (Glen Campbell), Only love can break a heart (Gene Pitney), Unforgettable (Nat King Cole), Alfie (an American hit for Dionne Warwick and a UK hit for Cilla Black), Can't take my eyes off you (Andy Williams), Never my love (Association), All my love (Patti Page), Singing my song (Tammy Wynette), Sunday morning coming down (Kris Kristofferson), Yesterday when I was young (Charles Aznavour), Walk away (Matt Monro), If you love me (Kay Starr) and Poor butterfly (from the Broadway musical Big show, this is an oft-covered jazz standard).
Although this compilation is now out of print, it is well worth seeking as not everything here has been re-issued on more recent compilations.

Nat King Cole at his best .......2005-01-12
For the time being this is as good as it gets.......2005-01-07
Neither collection is complete however, and each has its pros and cons. When push comes to shove however, I would be inclined to opt for "Unforgettable Nat King Cole". Each of the 25 selections in this marvelous collection have been digitally remastered for your listening enjoyment. And while the remastering job is not among the best I have ever heard, the audio quality is still far superior to the tracks on "Nat King Cole: The Greatest Hits" which do not appear to have been remastered at all. Still if you are primarily looking for Nat's biggest and best then you might ulimately prefer "The Greatest Hits". But the selections found on "Unforgettable" are pretty incredible as well. You'll find many of Nat's biggest solo hits of all time including the title song, "Mona Lisa", "L-O-V-E", "Autumn Leaves" as well as my personal favorite "That Sunday, That Summer". There are also a number of tunes from Nat's days with the King Cole Trio including "It's Only A Paper Moon", the classic "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66" and of course "Straighten Up and Fly Right".
Add to that all of the great standards like "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Almost Like Being In Love" and "Our Love Is Here To Stay" and it is easy to see why this is the most popular Nat King Cole collection currently available. There are also some pretty interesting liner notes composed by Nat's widow Maria.
With all of the great anthologies being offered by the record companies nowadays it is clearly time for Capitol Records to step up and release a comprehensive and fully remastered 2 disc set of the biggest and best of Nat King Cole. After all, one could argue that Nat King Cole almost single-handedly built Capitol records back in the 1940's. He clearly deserves better. But for now, "Unforgettable" is probably the way to go. Highly recommended.

The first Glenn Miller Compact Disc........2006-04-12
I also bought the "Essential Glenn Miller" collection and I thought it suffered from too much noise reduction and the song selection was too heavy on Eberle ballads. The "Unforgettable Glenn Miller & His Orchestra" collection has just one Eberle song and it's biggest hit "Serenade In Blue."
I've since bought the 3 disc/60 song "Popular Recordings" collection. That too has some of those "scratches and pops," but they just don't bother me at all. Anyway, this disc makes a great starting point, in your Glenn Miller discoveries.
Finally, why can't these compilations of old 78's have a few more seconds between them? Essentially we have a bunch of singles all crammed together, so why not let them have some breathing room. As I recall, the British Beatles albums from 1963 to 1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like letting dust settle before being inundated with another song right away. It basically gives each song it's own spotlight. Oh, the days of one song at a time.
Don't buy this collection unless you prefer scratches and pops.......2006-01-22

A must-have!.......2003-11-18
Among the sixteen tunes are such classics as Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree. The liner notes are practically nonexistent, which is unfortunate, as I would really like to know who the female singer is on Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (her voice is wonderful!). So, if you are a fan of swing music, or just want a taste of that 1940s sound, then I highly recommend that you get this CD. It's a must-have!

This standards-based album is really no surprise: Bing Crosby was nearly as much a hero to Merle Haggard as was Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzell, and for decades Hag has blended classic pop into his onstage repertoire. These nine standards and three contemporary tunes, recorded over a lengthy period, constitute a joint release by Capitol and his own Hag Records. Lounge-style, easygoing arrangements complement his warm, knowing renditions of "As Time Goes By" and Nat "King" Cole's "Unforgettable." He swings nimbly through "Pennies from Heaven" (graced by Clint Strong's peerless country-jazz guitar) and "I'll Get By," and he cloaks "Cry Me a River" in a world-weariness light years from Julie London's sultry original. In this context, Haggard's own "What Love Can Do" seems too contemporary. By contrast, the Western swing ballad "Goin' Away Party," written by Cindy Walker, and "Still Missing You," penned by album producer Freddy Powers, reflect a classic pop feel that fits perfectly. While Rod Stewart came to pop standards late in his career, Haggard already knew this territory forwards and backwards--and it shows. --Rich KienzleAmazon.com

Not all that memorable but still a nice side trip.......2005-04-12
On the other hand, comparing Merle to numerous "legit" singers who have attempted to go "pop" or, for that matter, to Willie Nelson or Rod Stewart produces a far more favorable assessment. In fact, the reading of "Stardust" on this album strikes me as more deeply felt, affecting and natural than Willie's version. This is an album that kind of grows on you--not quite 4 stars but, in anticipation of playing it some more, I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. Moreover, he's revived at least a couple of good old songs--"I'll Get By" and "The Gipsy"--that even Sinatra never got around to doing.
It seems country and jazz don't mix.......2005-02-18

I absolutely love this new recording.......2007-01-24
Here's a short description from the CD Baby website:
"In this CD of all new recordings, produced by Jack Hale of Hale House Productions, Seals & Crofts were able to utilize the latest in recording technology, to breathe new life into the classic hits as well as new material. Now you can hear their music, as they always wanted it interpreted. Featured on this collection are Lua Crofts (daughter of Dash Crofts), and Juliet Seals (daughter of Jim Seals)."
So, go and check out the longer (2-minute) song samples over there. You won't be disappointed.

The Digital Sound & Production is a 10, the vocals of James Seals & Dash Crofts are a Stellar 11, AND the Talents of Lua Crofts and Juliet Seals (Daughters of Proud Fathers) are a Welcome Surprise.

the Voices, the Musicianship, the Songwriting, the Spirit !.......2006-06-08
The songs:
Summer Breeze - a hint of the mellowness of age comes through here; the joys described are more familiar now, and thus even sweeter because, yes, it can still be this good.
Get Closer - Lovely vocals by Lua Crofts and Juliet Seals are just part of the re-invention of this song.
Diamond Girl - a bit jazzier version.
We May Never Pass This Way Again - oh, but we hope they will, on tour, please? I'd love to go to another of their concerts. Their legendary harmony is evident here.
Hummingbird - awesome a cappella intro - then I'm tapping my foot, and by the end I feel like I've been taken on a spiritual journey.
Not Be Found - sung as if sharing precious secrets.
Change the Copper into Gold - a new masterwork with east meets west instrumentation and impeccable vocal intricacies.
Paint You - new, mature, gentle love song.
The Euphrates - what?! Hit the replay. Wow. Hit the replay.
Love Takes No Prisoners - a new song of love and longing. And then they run away.
An independent production by Jack Hale for Hale House Productions.
Each of their albums must be remastered and issued on cd. I'm waiting for that and the next work they hint at on these liner notes. Come back, we want more!
Excellent reworking of some of their classics!.......2005-11-19
"Traces" is a great improvement over their "Greatest Hits" CD release for the absolute absence of any tape hiss, the rich harmonies and perfect delivery of many of their 70's hits. "Traces" can only be found "new" on a small independent online label: [...], or perhaps once in a gray moon "used" here on Amazon. This CD release is of exceptional musical quality, having lush back up vocals by their own daughters, and a crystal-clear deliverance of many of their past hits. I am not a professional critic, nor a musician any more. But, I recognize quality when I hear it and this CD is a first class project.
I know you will enjoy this CD as much I do. I only wish they'd consider touring again.
