5 out of 5 stars Classic R&B That Grooves Like Crazy!.......2007-03-25

Aside from James Brown, "Wilson Pickett's Greatest Hits" is the funkiest CD in my collection (and I've got a LOT of funky CD's.) I'm a bass player and back when I started out I decided I wanted to learn how to really groove, so I decided I'd study the masters of classic R&B. This was the first CD I bought and I still listen to it regularly when I want to reconnect with rhythm. Check out the way Pickett rides Jerry Jemmott's stuttering bassline on "Man And A Half" and see if you can stand still! These are classic cuts that really belong in everyone's music collection and if you dig R&B/Soul/Funk, you definitely need this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Kick It, Wicked.......2007-01-11

Start with a heapin' helpin' of Otis Redding, fold in just enough James Brown, then add a soupcon of Little Richard, and you've got something approximating the Wicked One, Wilson Pickett - one of soul music's premier practitioners and standard bearers. Indeed, it would be hard to find an R&B/Soul singer with more raw authority and feeling. This music doesn't encourage you to get down, it commands you.

The hits you absolutely have-to-have are all here, and it's amazing how well they stand up. For a quick clinic in "The British Invasion," check out Everybody Needs Somebody To Love. The Rolling Stones may have gotten mileage from it, but Pickett's version lays the foundation, it's authentic and electrifying. Midnight Hour, Mustang Sally, Land Of 1,000 Dances, Funky Broadway, and many others have all been covered by countless lesser practitioners and frat house bands - hearing the original "reference" versions is an unadulterated thrill.

Like many Greatest Hits CDs, some clunkers flew in under the radar. I could have lived without the cover of Hey Jude, a song that was bad even when the Beatles did it. The appearance of Sugar Sugar is a mystery, the Randy Newman classic, Mama Told Me Not To Come, is equally out of place. These missteps, from later in Wicked's career, do not mar what is truly a superb CD that would be cheap at twice the price.

One song in particular set-me-a-thinkin', (an expression nobody would have ever used where I'm from), A Man And A Half. This song has the endearing braggadocio we all came to love when practiced by Bo Diddley who "wore a cobra snake for a necktie." It contains the memorable line, "Shakespeare wrote poems about me even before I was born." Like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett exuded an unapologetically powerful and charismatic male energy that is woefully out of fashion now. If you put Babyface and Pickett in the same room, Babyface would most likely die of fright.

Shame on me for skipping past the fantastic back-up bands, especially those funky horns! Required listening.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of good R&B.......2006-04-15

If you like Wilson Pickett, or traditional R&B, this CD has many good songs on it. Great value.

1 out of 5 stars quality vs quantity.......2006-03-24

I am very disappointed in the quality of this CD.
24 hits on this CD. But sound quality is poor and CD is not fluid.
Kind of skippy.

Don't wait "In the Midnight Hour" for this "Midnight Mover." "Mustang Sally" called "634-5789" because she knows that his "Engine #9" shakes it at the "Funky Broadway" on its way to his "Land of 1000 Dances." He's all "Sugar Sugar," the man to mix "Fire and Water." He's got Duane Allman playing killer slide guitar on "Hey Jude," and the finest Southern soul rhythm sections backing him: Stax, Muscle Shoals, American. It's Wicked Pickett. 'Nuff said. --Robert Gordon

Wilson Pickett is one of the best in soul music and this Cd has the best of his music on it. If you too like soul music this Cd is a must to have.

5 out of 5 stars Mustang Sally and others.......2006-07-15

Ooooo...this song and this CD rev my engine. This is the CD I play when I need to exercise or clean the house. Sometimes I listen to Mustang Sally three times in a row.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing...... The Exciting Wilson Pickett.......2006-05-25

This is just what you need to kick start your Wicked Pickett collection. The first five songs are his major hits and hearing them back to back like this is almost overwhelming!(be warned stero lovers, they are in mono because the orginial analog mono masters were used its actually what I prefer)The remastering is great thanks to Rhino of course and the songs are terrific. I can't believe how good they got "I found a love" to sound its not perfect but its much better than any other remaster of that song. There are other songs that one could argue about not being here but that's not the purpose of this collection for those who wish for more grit I recommend "A man and A Half." Wilson is truly astounding on these sixteen cuts, its a shame he wasnt as successful on the pop charts. His roaring, raspy delivery is so drenched in gospel it makes you wonder(gospel fans) what Archie Brownlee would have sounded like had he went secular. The annotation and sequencing are great and the music is outstanding. Exquisite Pickett! :o)

5 out of 5 stars Still Loving Wilson Pickett.......2006-03-07

I ordered this CD after the death of Wilson Pickett to have a lasting memory of him. I have several of his LP and 45 records. This CD captured the most popular recordings of "Wicked Pickett." The tunes are excellent for driving music or for just sitting back, patting your foot and remembering back in the day!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Wilson Pickett.......2006-02-23

After learning of Wilson Pickett's passing, my thoughts had returned to my teenage years and how his music had made me feel and other happenings during this period in my life. I remember the good times and decided I wanted to have something to help remember them. "Mustang Sally" was always a favorite with memories of those "hot" chicks of my youth and tight sweaters. "Land of a thousand Dances" was also a favorite for all the dances that I attended of which this was a favorite to dance to.

3 out of 5 stars great music, mediocre audio quality.......2006-02-20

Wilson Pickett deserves better. This was issued in the early 90s and since then standards for remastering of vintage R&B/soul/and rock have improved .... Worth getting in terms of the music, 2 discs packed with one great soul track after another .... but the sound quality lacks punch .... I am hoping that someone goes back to the Atlantic studio vaults and remasters this stuff to bring out the full wickedness of Wicked Wilson Pickett!!!

5 out of 5 stars Salacious and Soulicious.......2006-01-18

For those who want a truly worthy representation of the man's body of work, check out "Man and a Half." This compilation includes gems from Wilson's early days with "The Falcons" as well as classics such as "Land of 1000 Dances" "Midnight Hour" and the staple of all open mic nights "Mustang Sally." However, the songs I have loved the most from this compilation were those that never get airplay. Such songs as Isaac Hayes' classic "Toehold", or other finds such as "I found a True love" make my feet move. I've also discovered new favorites such as "She's looking Good", "Mini-skirt Minnie", and "She said Yes". If you like soul music that's gritty and raw, check out "Wicked" Wilson's music. You won't regret it.

James Brown may be the Godfather, but Wilson Pickett is the Arch Bishop.

5 out of 5 stars soul music's truest legend!!!!.......2004-08-21

wilson pickett is truly one of the world's greatest soul singers, frow his early days with the falcons band when "i found a love" was born on through his magnificent journey of foot stompin' hips shaking everywhere ,voices shoutin' do the "funky broadway" "in the midnight hour" " she's lookin'good" "i found a true love" "mustang sally" "i'm a midnight mover" "engine #9" "fire and water" mercy, mercy!! one little foot note if anyone is interested how wilson pickett got his nickname "wicked" is when he was on a plane years ago going to a show i believe, and some woman sitting across from him caught him trying to look up her skirt and just then she hollered ooh child you is "wicked" that's how i heard it one time on the david letterman show when he asked him about it,well that's all folks!!!!joey hoffman soulin' on !!!!

3 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTMENT.......2003-10-30

I was disappointed by sound quality of the CDs!
I still have most of the songs on tape and I'm sure
the sound is better than that from the CD-player.
And it was a great surprise to me because I play
CDs on High-quality "PHILIPS" player and I've
never had such problems with other CDs. Maybe it's due
to recording technology but anyhow it's a horrible
sound from "mono" recorded songs as well as from "stereo"
recorded.
Sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Wicked,wicked,wicked...and that's good!.......2001-08-14

Wilson Pickett had,and probably still has, it all. The church trained passionate voice in an eternal battle between the sacred and the profane. Evidence, based on "Mustang Sally" alone, suggests that the 'devil' usually got the upperhand, but in the context of great soul singing this is usually the case. No other soul man left the church behind in such a funky cloud of dust as "The Wicked" did. Thank you Rhino Records for putting this soul giant's greatest stuff (and it's all great) in one easy to buy package. From his neophyte gospel/doowop crooning with the Falcons, through the monster sixties soul standards with Jerry Wexler at the helm and the Stax musicians kickin' his booty, all the way to some of the greatest pre-disco hits Gamble and Huff ever had a hand in, this set is a soul fan's picnic in the park.Don't let the green grass fool ya in the midnight hour I found a love and she was a midnite mover on funky Broadway!Lord have mercy! Oh, sorry, I'm listening to it as I type this. I think you know how I feel.

This was one of my favorite 8-tracks as a teenager. It takes me right back to that time in my life

4 out of 5 stars Re-issue of Pickett Classic Could Use More TLC.......2004-08-01

Wilson Pickett's 1965 debut album, "In The Midnight Hour" covered in 12 tracks the various styles and settings the soul giant explored on numerous singles (for several small labels) during the first half of the decade, finally finding his mien, climaxing at Stax with the title triumph. "The Exciting" is the followup, and without question more consistant in overall sound and approach, covering sessions recorded at Stax and Fame Studios during 1965 - 66. Despite a needless re-run of "Midnight Hour," (same track in the same mix) the set is classic Pickett: funky, blues- and gospel-influenced, aggressive and intense. It is often forgotten that Pickett wrote much of his own material, and more than half of this set features Pickett's name credited as songwriter.
The main problem with this 2002 reissue is Collectables' indifferent treatment of a true 1960s gem: the front cover is reproduced, but that's it - no annotation or liner notes, let alone remastering credit, and the cover isn't even part of a booklet: what would normally be page 3 is a coupon for the label's catalog. This cheesiness extends to the remastering, utterly different from the Rhino remasters of a decade ago. The album sounds overly bright, harsh, metallic, lacking in the warmth inherent in the music. Too bad--I hope someone (Sundazed?for a revealing contrast investigate their Lee Dorsey remasters!) revisits the Pickett catalog soon and gives it the respect it deserves!

5 out of 5 stars Maybe his best?.......2004-05-23

If you could only own one Wilson Pickett record, this might be the one to get. And if you can own more than one, you certainly ought to have this one. Not so much because of the break-out hits, which are available elsewhere, but because of the less familiar tracks. If you love Wilson Pickett's singing for the things that make it unique, you should pick this up just for the sake of the astonishing "It's All Over." All over indeed; there's just nothing left after this.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Prime Pickett, - But Buyer Beware!.......2006-02-23

Wilson Pickett, who died last month at age 64, was one of the most dynamic, exuberant, and compelling soul singers of his generation. At his creative and commercial peak he recorded a dozen albums for Atlantic (including two hits compilations - and I'm not counting two various artist sets that each featured a pair of riveting Pickett live performances), released during 1964 - 72, when he left the label for a rather misguided period at RCA that, along with changing popular tastes, led his career to nosedive. But those Atlantic albums (which in the beginning included some earlier material, dating as far back as the Falcons' 1961 "I Found A Love") are all worthwhile, ranging from very good to classic. "The Wicked Pickett" is Pickett's third for the label, a terrific set mostly recorded at Rick Hall's Fame Studios in October 1966. As such it has a consistancy of feel lacking in some of the artist's more randomly compiled (but still worthwhile) sets, like the debut "In The Midnight Hour" or 1968's "Midnight Mover." With Hall and Tom Dowd overseeing a core band that includes Chips Moman, Roger Hawkins, Spooner Oldham, and Tommy Cogbill (the horn section includes Floyd Newman and Charles Chalmers) the emphasis is on deep Southern soul, slinky mid-tempo funk and the occasional rave-up. The hits include the immortal 'Mustang Sally' and a revved up 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love'. 'Sunny', the suave Bobby Hebb hit, is the wild card, but Pickett's version works, and as always it is a pleasure to hear the artist's distinctive, blistering take on New Orleans r & b (Jessie Hill's 'Ooh Poo Pah Do' and Gary "U.S." Bond's slinky 'New Orleans') - Pickett transforms the usually relaxed, laconic character that typifies the city's r & b and funk. Perhaps the most curious thing about Pickett's third Atlantic album is the lack of any original material - Pickett was a prolific and underrated songwriter - but as he'd soon be back to penning many of his own songs this fact warrants a mere aside.
"The Wicked Picket" captures Pickett in his stride, and the four star rating - as opposed to five - is for the questionable CD version listed first on Amazon. I bought it and found that this European import (not identified as such in the product information) contains a meticulous transfer of what must be an old 'fake stereo' master: dissatisfied with the less than punchy-sound, I isolated each speaker and discovered the left channel to be transistor-radio thin, with a blurry low end fog emaninating from the right channel. The unacceptable
practice of 'simulating stereo' mostly went out with the '60s. Fortunately, perhaps, Collectables recently reissued this gem and having just ordered a copy I can only hope the label used a true stereo - or mono - master. Collectables is hardly noted for its sensitivity to sonic nuance (or original packaging - you get the front cover and a coupon for the label's catalog, with no annotation, notes or remastering credits), but they have improved somewhat in recent years. The label seems to have taken over from Rhino in reissuing much of Pickett's Atlantic catalog. Too bad, for the best produced Pickett on CD remain Rhino's 1995 remasters of two classics, "I'm In Love" (1968) and "In Philadelphia" (1970) - both sound superb, warm and detailed, and feature excellent notes and worthwhile bonus tracks. Now out of print, these editions are definitive if you can find them at a reasonable price. With the tragic death of this great artist, we still don't have the state of the art restoration, with bonus material, and serious attention to quality that Chronicles has given (say) James Brown's sprawling catalog, or that Sundazed routinely gives its splendid reissues (the latter label's complete set of Meters albums on CD, or their 180 gram vinyl Otis Redding series, are exemplary). Amazingly, some of Pickett's Atlantic albums (and single sides) have at this late date still not been issued on CD, and that is truly a shame.

5 out of 5 stars the one and only.......2006-01-17

While there are some largely forgettable Wilson Pickett records out there - 'Pickett in the Pocket' and 'Miz Lena's Boy' for examaple- his entire Atlantic catalog is impeccable. This album features many of the seminal southern soul sidemen such as the great Jimmy Johnson on guitar and the equally superb Roger Hawkins, the drummer on numerous soul and R&B hits such as 'I'll Take You There'.
The obvious highlight is 'Mustang Sally' but the oft covered 'You Left the Water Running' is equally as good. Don Covay's 'Three Time Loser' is justly placed on his double LP greatest hits. Pickett also scorches 'Knock On Wood' and really nails the great Laura Lee ballad, 'Up Tight Good Woman'. Also his version of 'Sunny'is pretty cool. There's some filler on this but hey, it's still Wilson Pickett with a great band.

3 out of 5 stars Not Definitive.......2007-02-28

When Wilson Pickett died last year, it seemed his classic Atlantic catalog
- long overdue for a domestic upgrade - just might get the TLC it deserves. Death can either stimulate interest in a neglected legend's work (Ray Charles and Johnny Cash for two recent examples), or not if tragedy is compounded by indifference, and for Pickett fans there just isn't much available in the marketplace. The soul great recorded his most rewarding music for Atlantic from 1962 until 1973, and yet aside from some substandard (sonically and in terms of packaging) titles reissued by Collectables, all we get are the same old repackagings. A decade ago Rhino released two superp expanded editions of Pickett gems, "I'm In Love" (1968) and "In Philadelphia" (1970), both long out of print.
Now Pickett is victim of the "Definitive Soul Collection" treatment. This double CD set collects a mere 30 tracks, 15 per disc, and the selection is deeply obvious. For those who want a solid overview, Rhino's "A Man And A Half," released back in 1992, features 44 tracks including some rarities such as a pair of blistering live performances as well as a decent essay, annotation, a discography, and more. It remains the best Pickett compilation that is fairly easy to find. Of course there is much, much more, and I hope somebody sees that Pickett gets the posthumous respect he so deserved during the last decades of his life.
In short, this "Definitive" collection, designed for the casual buyer I suppose, is another travesty in the recent series, and should be avoided.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent argument for watching Shakespeare's plays.......2005-11-29

'Shakespeare's Musick' by Musicians of the Globe, lead by Philip Pickett is, like a similar recording, 'Songs and Dances from Shakespeare' by The Broadside Band' is a very nice recreation of what you would have heard at the Globe Theatre in London during or after the performances of Will Shakespeare's plays. I will also say that I believe it is just a bit better than the alternative recording if only for it's fewer 'Hey Nonnie Nonnies'. But, both recordings are not the best you can find of Renaissance music. Compared to excellent recordings of Renaissance dances and liturgical music, these seem to suffer from being out of context.

These are well worth the listen, but they will probably not set your toes to tapping as you might to performances by, for example, the Renaissance specialist band Piffaro.

5 out of 5 stars Elizabethan Surprise!.......2000-02-12

If someone had asked me before I listened to the music provided on this CD if I liked English music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I would have wrinkled my nose and said a resounding "Yuck!" I came across "Shakespeare's Musick" quite by accident at the local library. I was working on a project dealing with William Shakespeare and decided to take this CD home to see if it would fit into my theme. From the very first song to the very last, Philip Pickett and the Musicians of the Globe had me captivated. The sound is pure and lively and takes the listener on a ride that transcends time. It certainly made this listener a convert! I am now purchasing "Shakespeare's Musick" to add to my own collection and would highly recommend its addition to anyone elses. It will open your ears to a whole other world of sound -- sound that not only tickles the fancy, but enchants the soul.

4 out of 5 stars A Compromise Between "Essential" and "Comprehensive".......2002-08-09

The Essentials lives up to its name in that you get 12 of the Wicked Pickett's 16 Top 40 smash hits. Pickett was one of the defining voices of the Sixties. Who else could take a bubblegum hit like "Sugar Sugar" and make it soulful? While not as thorough as a couple of Rhino's earlier compilations, this is a concise collection of some of the best soul music ever recorded. Anyone who claims to be a fan of Sixties music in general--or soul music in particular--needs this music in their collection. RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Very Soulful&Rocking.......2002-07-15

Wilson Pickett is truly represented here. His voice is in full effect here.Mustang Sally,In the midnight Hour are songs that still can get a Party going.when you combine the Music&His Soulful Vocals you have a Winning Formula that is a Knockout everytime you listen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic Wilson Pickett edgy soul sound;.......2006-01-20

The "Midnight Hour" album put Wilson Pickett's rough, edgy, urgent soul voice right out front in the soul sounds of the mid 60's. His "from the heart" voice matched James Brown and Otis Redding in intensity and depth. Listen to "I Found A Love" for that deep feeling he was so filled with. Pickett died January 19, 2006 leaving the soul scene missing one of the icons of the 60's breakout soul sounds.
