A tempting treasury, but only a few performances are great.......2007-02-03

Ten discs of Berlioz is a sumptuous offering, and temptingly cheap at Amazon Marketplace. DG has used this occasion to repackage some outstanding performances. At the top of the list goes James Levine's electrifying Requiem from Berlin, with playing and singing to match the conductor's inspiration. Also exciting--perhaps surprisingly so--is Abbado's Te Deum, which has rawer edges and sharper focus than Colin Davis's on Philips, long the standard version.

Dropping down a notch in quality, we have an elegantly played Romeo et Juliette by the Boston Symphony, superbly recorded, that has few rivals for refined virtuosity. But after a while Seiji Ozawa's approach seems to lack depth and meaning; he's skating over the surface of the musical drama, however brilliantly. Sharp and brilliant also describes Myung-Whun Chung's contribution, a Symponie fantastique, two overtures, and the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, all with his well-trained Bastille Opera orchestra. Chung is to the manner born in Berlioz, but so are greater conductors in these works, including Munch and Markevitch.

At about the same quality level I'd place the Mort de Cleopatre, a dullish early vocal scene sung with plushness by Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa's Les Nuits d'Ete, which is ravishing in terms of sheer vocalism but otherwise vacant. Daniel Barenboim's slack conducting does the piece no favors, either, which holds true on a much larger scale for his Damnation of Faust. This is a typical Barenboim product, full of lush sounds, excellent singing, big-scale orchestral work, but leading to a meager artistic payoff. Barenboim's Faust isn't remotely competitive with Markevitch, Chung, Solti, Pretre, and others in this work. It's great to hear Domingo in the title role, but the conducting is so routine that I'm not sure the overall experience is worth it.

We get odds and ends of varying quality: the rarely recorded Tristia done superbly by Boulez, an uneven batch of songs that previously appeared in their own double-CD set (a chore to listen to in its entirety, despite the occasional gem), and a pedestrain Harold in Italy conducted by Lorin Maazel in Berlin, a performance that DG surely could have bettered by looking deeper into their vaults.

In all, I can't see investing in such an uneven collection except at super-budget price. If you do a little searching, all the best things here can be gotten separately, and the lesser recordings pale by comparison with classic Berlioz from Colin Davis, Charles Munch, and Igor Markevitch.

Berlioz with immaginative variety.......2003-10-30

This box makes a nice alternative to the Philips boxes under Colin Davis. Not to take anything away from Davis. His Berlioz cycle certainly ranks up there with the elite for recording achievements. But many will not want to invest in all 3 boxes, so Universal has brought us a great compilation of some of Berlioz' best works from a variety of performers with different styles.
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality. It seems cleaned up a little from what I remember of the CDs from the mid 80s; much more spacious, less muddy sounding. I especially like the chorus in the hushed night scene.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo; Yvonne Minto is probably not in the same class with the others, but she's more than acceptable.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum.
Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable, if not first-class.
The rest of the works are very commendable, if not top-of-the-class.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem.

Truly Magnificent!.......2000-05-29

When it comes to to Mozart, I am very picky, to say the least. Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of Saint Martins-in-the-Fields has, with the exception of 2 or 3 times, always come through with remarkable recordings. The Mozart Experience is truly wonderful. I particularly enjoyed the two piano concertos K.466 and K.467 (absolutely magnificent, BRAVO!) My 10 year old daughter enjoys the Concerto for Flute and Harp and, of course, Eine Klein Nachtmusik. Mozart would be pleased to hear his music treated so kindly. In that respect, he would most likely be quite amused by this world class conductor and orchestra using 21 plus minutes of recording time to perform his Musical Joke. I guess the jokes is on us. P.S. I love you Wolfie - I kiss your wonderful hands 10,000 times!

It's nice to hear men who can sing with or without music, they are like the singer from the old school, they seem to sing for the love of the music.Each of the members of Serenade are a joy to listen to and the harmony is wonderful,It's all in the name -Serenade.If you like R & B ,this is one album you must have!

Serenade - What an Experience!.......2000-04-07

I think that the gentlemen of Serenade have talent and skills that rival any contemporaries. To be quite honest, I cannot think of any contemporaries. Their harmonies are an exquisite blending of experience, knowledge and a genuine feel for the music. Each voice is uniquely different and yet, most are interchangeable. Each gentleman has his specific job and does it quite well. Zane offers a grittier sound while J-Luv brings more of an urban flavor. My favorite is Young Wil. I call him "the clean-up man". His range is absolutely stupid! And rivals most female singers out today as he has power in his natural soprano and his delivery is awesome! You can actually feel the emotion he is attempting to convey. Zane and J-Luv lay the groundwork and Young Wil puts you over the top! Most would probably compare him to some of the more popular male singers who sing falsetto, but Wil sings pure soprano! His voice ads the flavor on Moet and brings tears on Thought of Losing You. The remake of Where You Are sends chills down my spine and makes me want to find my loved one and hold on tight!

J-Luv is quite the rapper and I find myself singing along . . . "you don't know she's the Nemesis . . . could feel the bad vibe when she stepped on the premises". His flow is smooth and yet light.

Zane brings that "old school" feel to the songs, putting it down like Bobby Womack or even the faintest hint of Teddy Pendergrass. Takes you back. Takes you waaaay back!

The writing is fresh, the soundtracks are fierce! And I love the fact that the songs (excluding the remake) are original.

Definitely a group to watch. I'm predicting Grammies!

Much success to you, fellas! You've got something worth my money! What a pleasant change from all the reverb, dubbed, overlayed and sampled crap being put out every 5 minutes!

I would really like to hear Wil lead more songs on the next album.

On the negative, I didn't much care for the explicit lyrics in the narrative portion of the song about the woman coming in after staying out all night. I've seen you guys in person and your act is much too classy to be referring to women out of their proper names.

Other than that song, the album is worth the money and the group is definitely polished and one to watch.

I DIDN'T HAVE TO BYPASS ONE SONG. THIS WAS A REFRESHING BREATH OF AIR FOR R&B AND HIPHOP. THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HEAR, PERIOD.

Modular furniture and a little espionage.......2002-01-05

More than the actualised album I like the *idea* of this CD - an easy-listening concept album based around a romantic 1960's apres-ski lifestyle that evokes images of secret agents in mod ski-wear defeating their enemies on the Alpine slopes (then it's back to the ski-lodge in time for martinis by the fire). There's also nods to other James Bond style pursuits - St Tropez, sportscars, impossibly long white scarves etc, etc...

Well, that's basically the theme this CD aims for, but sadly the result falls a little shy of the mark. The elements are all here, orchestral arrangements (albeit a little lo-fi, recorded in "Sofasound" whatever that may be), the ba-ba-dee-da vocal choruses and titles like "Girl on A Snowmobile" and "Groovin' Happenin'" etc...

Overall it's a fun, fantasy excursion but maybe its self-consciousness lets it down in the end. That and a few really weak songs. Disappointing, but some will find it pleasing.

This is one of the most unique and creative CDs I've listened to in a very long time. Bravo!

absolute garbage.......2002-04-07

This CD was given to me for free, and after one listening, I could understand why. Don't be fooled by the instrumentation that sounds like it could be interesting. The compositions are mostly used-up ideas, tiresome colors lacking a process or purpose. My first thought while listening was that this sounded like a disc of works written by student composers from third rate music schools. Then I checked the liner notes and discovered that's exactly what it is. Even the playing is weak - while perhaps a few of the horn bleats were written that way on purpose, there is an exceptional amount of awful playing hiding behind the fact that this music is unknown. This is one of the worst classical CDs I've ever heard.
