Volume 2 of 12 looks at 1967 and 1968.......2005-09-08
Despite their limited impact on the UK charts at the time, many of these tracks are now regarded as classics and rightly so. Perhaps Brits weren't ready for them at the time or perhaps the quality of music around at the time was such that they didn't get the attention they deserved.
Anyway, the other tracks include the first hit version of I heard it through the grapevine - Gladys Knight's version was recorded at around the same time as Marvin Gaye's but was thought to be the best choice for release as a single. History shows they were wrong but I enjoy both versions. Marvin's two duets with Tammi Terrell (Ain't nothing like the real thing, If I could build my world around you) and the two Stevie Wonder tracks (I'm wondering, Shoo be doo be doo da day) are among the other highlights.
Nevertheless, it seems strange that Walk away Renee (Four Tops) is missing. It's not the only big Four Tops hit missing from this series - Reach out I'll be there and Bernadette are also missing - so I guess there was some contractual problem.
Despite the surprising lack of big UK hits, this is a great compilation of some of Motown's classic songs from the sixties.

Motown Floor Fillers.......2006-03-05
To this aim he has gathered up many rare and previously unreleased gems as well as some more well known pieces such as as Martha and the Vandellas' You've Been In Love Too Long and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's California Soul (actually Valerie Simpson depping for Tammi). From this collection it would seem that he favours the Northern Soul end of the Motown oeuvre.
As always one is amazed that so many top quality recordings have languished in a vault for so many decades and glad of the privilege to hear them now.
There are some discrepancies between Richard Searling's annotations and the factual information listed beneath, which one can put down to his enthusiasm, though in the case of the Temptation's I Got Heaven Right Here On Earth, he seems to be correct as the listing that follows describes a completely different song (You Make Your Own Heaven And Hell Right Here On Earth).
Stand out artists here include the Four Tops, the Velvelettes and the inimitable Brenda Holloway.

Club friendly choices.......2006-03-05
Northern Soul was something different, although there are overlaps. These are all highly contagious dance tracks, with clattery trebly beats, pumping bass rhythms and excited, passionate vocals, and some of the rarer items, such as Barbara McNair's You're Gonna Love My Baby, would have cost a small ransom to acquire. This compilation would make a good companion set for The Trojan Mod Reggae Box Set and any good original mod group anthology that contains the Who, the Small Faces, the Birds, the Kinks, Creation and others of their ilk.
All 20 tracks are in club speaker friendly mono.
Enjoyable Motown Compilation.......2001-11-08
This collection features tracks favoured by the Brit 'mod' scene and is by and large a good compilation of dancefloor fillers from 1962-68.
While I am aware that Spectrum need a few established tracks to get the casual buyer interested, do we really need an otherwise fine collection let down by the inclusion of such war-horses as the Four Tops' "I Can't Help Myself", Gladys & The Pips' "Just Walk In My Shoes", The Supremes' "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart" and Martha & the Vandellas' "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave"? This is why this release gets 3 instead of 4 stars from me.
However there are enough gems on here to delight any fan. Apart from proven greats by The Temptations, The Marvelettes and the under-rated Kim Weston, tracks like the Contours' stomper "Just A Little Misunderstanding", the silky "You're Gonna Love My Baby" by Barbara McNair, Smokey Robinson's fantastic vocal on "I Gotta Dance To Keep From Crying" and Junior Walker ripping it up as only he could on "Tune Up" all stand the test of time, sounding as vibrant and full on as 30-odd years ago.
However the real revelation is the last track "From Head To Toe" by the fantastic Chris Clark. One of the few white girl singers signed to Motown, she has been sadly neglected on previous compilations. But here, sounding a bit like the US's answer to Lulu, Chris takes this Smokey Robinson song and turns in as exciting a performance as any of her more acclamed labelmates. It's hard to stay still with this track which starts off quiet and builds to a frantic stomper! Hopefully one day a collection of her work might see the light of day as Spectrum have recently done with artists like Florence Ballard and Tammi Terrell.
Okay... lights off, push the furniture back and dance!

Product Description
With its high-octane rhythm, fiery guitar and undeniable hook, Joanie Leeds' "Bad Girl" is the exclamation point on an album that makes her strongest statement yet. In one 3-and-a-half-minute blast, Leeds displays her lyrical wit, her gift for memorable songcraft, and her ability to write compelling music in a diverse range of styles. Sure, it's tongue-in-cheek, satirizing the mock rebellion of manufactured teen-pop divas, but Leeds' bold and boisterous "Bad Girl" is an emblem of the confidence and promise that permeates her 2nd album, SOUL FROM MY FOOTSTEPS, and the signal of an exceptional rising talent. Adding "Bad Girl"-style power pop, along with blues and funk to her repertoire, SOUL FROM MY FOOTSTEPS builds on the gentle folk-rock of Joanie's previous album without sacrificing any of its sensitivity and warmth. After years of invaluable experience on the New York City circuit, Joanie has emerged with a fully fleshed-out sound and a winning sense of artistic direction and creative independence that separates her from her peers.

Album Description
Having worked the likes of The O' Jays, Johnny Nash, Three Degrees, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Billy Paul during his career at CBS (later re-named Sony) Greg Edwards ciriculum vitae reads like a `who's who' in soul/jazz music. When he finally left CBS to pursue a DJ career he became a disc-jockey at Capital Radio where the "Soul Spectrum" show was born. Obsessive's Soul Spectrum series recieves its inspiration from the now revered days when Greg was rocking the airwaves; these were the sort of shows that made the radio worth listening to.Greg was then, as he is now, a pioneer of Soul and Jazz music in the UK and back in the day the only place to get your fix was by tuning into Capital Radio where Greg, who created, produced and presented the show, was defined as "the man who restyled Saturday's". Now you can once again enjoy the heatwarming moments and free spirited times that only the sweet sounds of classic soul can offer - right here. Picks include Linda Clifford's gorgeous "Run Away Love", SOS Band's "High Hopes", and Billy Griffin's "Hold Me Tighter In The Rain". Essential listening that demands your attention!
