One can't venture very far into contemporary pop without hearing the echoes of '70s-'80's soul, funk and r&b; decades once mocked have seen their vibrant, groove-savvy music re-embraced -- often without a trace of kitsch-savvy irony. This triple-disc, 58 track collection may come anthologized with a slightly cheesy conceit--retro-party-soundtrack-in-a-box, with discs devoted to flavoring your soulful soiree's beginning, middle and end--but its potent collection of vintage, era-evoking favorites can't be denied. Disc one/"Kickin' It Off" wends its way from expected jams like Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" and Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" through such funk-fueled grooves as James Brown's sweaty "Payback" and Donna Summer's urgent, torch-song-with-a beat "Last Dance." Disc two/"Getting' Into the Groove" does just that via Top 40 stalwarts like The Spinners, Four Tops and O'Jays, while making room for legends (Al Green, Isley Brothers) and newcomers like the Brothers Johnson and Kool & the Gang alike. The set's final act winds down into late-night sultriness via Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Heraling," Delfonics' "Didn't I Blow Your Mind," Pointer Sister's "Slow Hand" and other sexy charms. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars i own the CD.......2005-05-24

this CD is really good. i am only 19, so i had never heard these songs, but found the CD in a CD case that was in one of my brothers friends car, that was about 8 years ago. i have listened to this CD ever since. if that is the correct spelling.
i like almost every one of the songs, it is great.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2002-07-30

There were only a few songs that I recognized and liked. The rest of the songs that I never heard of weren't so great. I would have given lower ratings but that would be pushing it too far.

4 out of 5 stars Bumpin".......2001-09-26

4 out of 5 stars Before Flex Went Corporate Pt. II {4 Stars}.......2006-09-10

Why Flex calls his albums 60 minutes of funk when they're more like 72 minutes of funk is beyond me. Not that it's a bad thing though, Flex brings the noise on this album. There are plenty of bangers and club rockers on this album. It has a lot more meat to dig into this time around. His first album was good, but there was a severe drop off toward the end of that album. Flex does a great job of blending, scratching, and juggling on Volume 2. Jay Z freestyles, DJ Kool snippets, classic old school rap, it's all there for the taking on this LP.

The first problem I have with this album is the use of 70's funk. I'm as big a fan as anyone of classics like "Flashlight", "Outstanding", and "Rising To The Top", but they stuck out like sore thumbs. Simply put, they didn't fit on the album....and he didn't blend them very well either. Secondly, whoever told Mary J. Blige she could rap should be tied up and forced to listen to her horrid rapping for a month straight. Also, if you're looking for the 12" version of the classic "No Joke/Follow Me" (which is mixed and scratched 20 times better than the album version), then look elsewhere, it's not included on this album. I actually bought the single on wax before I bought this album and I remember being thoroughly disappointed. The rest of the album is pretty tight though.

The Mixtape Volume II: 60 Minutes Of Funk is the last great Funkmaster Flex album. Volume III is good, but it's where Flex starts to lose his street appeal and aims for the mass appeal. If you want to hear some dope stuff from back when Flex still had his ear to the street, then check this and Volume I out. Two thumbs up from this listener.

Standout Tracks: Boot Camp Clik Freestyle (My Favorite), Back To Like (However Do You Want Me), Clear My Throat, Nas Freestyle, No Joke/Follow Me, Sucker MC's, Tour, Jay Z Freestyle, Relax & Party, Puff Daddy & Mase Freestyle, Lil' Kim Freestyle, I'm Not Feeling You, and Lady Saw Freestyle

5 out of 5 stars This CD Is Hot.......2001-06-06

Me being a DJ myself this is probably one of the most impressive cds i have heard in a while. With flex you can always count on him beacsue hes got the beats and the top rap stars to make this cd a hit. it has like 45 tracks mosstietly freestyle but thats aight still got a t least 82 minutes of audio. so get this cd or any other funkmaster flex cd. Mix tape volume 4 is the best.

        3 out of 5 stars It's alright..........2000-06-14

The beats are alright but their nothing compared to the newest CD, The Tunnel. Most of the songs are alright, the best being the Busta Rhymes song.

        5 out of 5 stars Blowfly's Best.......2003-07-03

Straight out of my highschool days, this was the ultimate fantasy album (what we all wished that we were doing). Blow' has managed to put his quirky style and funkier lyrics together in a compilation of the best X-rated songs ever. My favorite little hard to find gem has always been "Prick Ryder", about women's lib in the bedroom.

3 out of 5 stars Lowgrade stuff that somehow works.......2002-07-24

The production, lyrical content, and delivery are all of low-grade quality. Clarence "Blowfly" Reid sounds like a street corner drunk trying to amuse his friends with dirty lyrics (one can imagine the young 2 Live Crew getting inspired by this). But somehow, like the best records of this kind, it somehow works.

        4 out of 5 stars So bad , it's good........2000-08-21

I have played this album for all of my friends and they all do the same thing, laugh and show a look of puzzlement. This songwriting is so bad that it's great. You will never hear anything like this anywhere. If you are into unique, get it.

3 out of 5 stars Nasty jokes rapped on a background of R&B........1999-05-24

Listening to this Blowfly album is a lot like listening to old Redd Foxx and Dol-A-Mite records. It is raw and nasty to the bone. Not many artist can pull off an album with this mix of songs. May be too rough for delicate ears. Most would consider sexist, homophobic and mysoganist.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun.......1998-12-05

If you like to dance, this album will MAKE you dance! It starts off with a bass pumping remix of the famous classic "Planet Rock". As the show moves on, the music gets wilder and wilder! Magic Mike then includes his own song "Work It Out" towards the end and tops the party off with "The Crossroad" by Bone Thugs and Harmony. You couldn't ask for a better dance CD than this!

5 out of 5 stars The BEST is still the BEST!!.......1998-08-21

DJ Magic Mike has always rocked the house with his own bass beats and mixing style. Now he has proven his work again by taking some classic jams and "pumping them up" a bit. Like DJ Magic Mike has always said. "This is how it should be done".

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding compilation.......1998-06-12

This is a classic grouping of great all time booty bass tracks. Seamlessly edited by DJ Magic Mike, once you put it on, you can't take it off!

Great sexy raps over some cold beats, reminds me of the pleasures hip-hop left behind.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best compilations EVER.......2001-03-12

Most compilations are spearheaded by a good single or two, maybe an alright feestyle here or there and a couple of skits of which you skip after the first time. Not this compilation. From beginning to end this is a treat to the ear. Combining classic tracks to get your head nodding like 'me so horny' and 'wild thing' with more obscure but equally phat tracks like 'electric kingdom'. Believe me this is a compilation you need to have in your collection. This ranks in my opinion right up with the soundbombing series and Anticon.A must for someone who likes not having to skip tracks.
