There's no question that Jesse Powell's got one of the most magnificent sets of pipes on the male side of today's R&B game. With a four-octave range that delivers acrobatic leaps and bounds with unfettered ease--especially in his angelically crystalline upper range--Powell serves up a few spine-tingling moments on his third release. Especially when he stops employing R. Kelly-type methods (on lukewarm bump-and-grinders like "Go Upstairs" and "After We Make Love"), and just lets his vocals soar into the stratosphere, as on unabashedly gooey heart warmers like "It'll Take the World" and "If I." As expected, most of these sublime moments are blandly wrapped up into minor key ballads made to fit the format of Quiet Storm radio airwaves. But Powell's voice remains a wonder throughout, capable of rising above his material's schlocky melodies and hackneyed pillow talk. --Sylvia W. Chan

This CD is off the chain, this cd is an orignal. In my opinion NOBODY is on Jesse's level of vocals....This Is Real Music!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer - Great Music.......2006-02-04

Jesse Powell is from my hometown. I remember him performing for local shows, which developed a local following. This cd is no exception. His voice is one that reminds you of what R&B singing should be. His voice is like that of lead singer of "Enchantment". (He also does a great cover of "Gloria & It's You That I Need". This cd is great music with a great singer.

5 out of 5 stars Easily one of the most underrated R&B singers of his day.......2006-02-02

Jesse Powell is and always will be one of the most underrated singers in R&B.The inherent irony of JP is that although R&B crooner Jesse Powell presents himself as a mack daddy of the first order--complete with invitations to disrobe and offers of extreme carnal satisfaction--you know there's something more to the story. There's a disarming airiness to Powell's voice and delivery that's ingratiating enough to suggest more depth to his persona than he's willing to admit. Unlike dyed-in-the-wool lotharios like R. Kelly, whose love-'em-and-leave-'em ways are in little doubt, Powell sounds like the type whose big talk might just hide a nice guy with more on his mind than jumping in the sack. In any case, the slow-jam arrangements, vintage analog synths, and hip-hop beats are crafted to please any fan of contemporary R&B, whether one takes Powell at face value or not. Stand out tracks include the sentimental It'lll Take The World,Take My Breath Away and the baby makers Go Upstaris and After We Make Love. Mr Powell also really shines on his cover of Something In The Past.

I saw J.P. Fraley with his daughter and son-in-law on back-up instruments at a U.U. church in Tampa back in 1998 or so. He was getting along in years and wasn't always on the mark, but his sweet strains on fiddle made up for that many times over! If you are an old-time music fan, contra dancer or are new to this genre and just curious...this is a wonderful CD.

Album Description

Called "one of the best songwriters in the indie world" by Independent Songwriter Web Magazine, JP Jones is a prolific and genre bending artist whose previous releases have charted on the folkdj-l and New Age Voice Airwaves Top-50 lists. Most recently, Back to Jerusalem was named one of the "10 Best Folk Releases of 2000" by Hugh Blumenfeld's about.folkmusic.com website. Jones' newest release, Salvation Street, is an ambitious (70+ minute) folk/rock album that strikes an elegant balance between spontaneity of performance and polish of production. The disc was recorded live in the living room of Jones' Newport, RI home and features his touring band Rite Tite (Kurt Meyer; bass, Dave Lang; drums, Mike Barrett; electric guitar and Matt Niebels; percussion) and special guest appearances by Barb Schloff-Arietta, Les Sampou, Lloyd Salisbury, Vinnie Pasternak, and Mike Fishman. Introspective at the core, Salvation Street is an honest and intense examination of Daemon and purpose. The primary subject matter is songwriting itself. After a 30-plus year career, Jones takes this stuff seriously. What's most remarkable, however, is that he manages to have so much fun along the way.

4 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2006-02-24

How come I never heard of this guy? Virtually every song has merit. Excellent production, playing and singing. Great lyrics, great sense of humour, great entertainment. I will definitely give this multiple listens.

5 out of 5 stars New to me, but glad I heard this........2002-05-05

Every once in a while, I hear music from some one that is really set apart from all the others. The craft and artistry in this CD are the result of a mature and skillfull performer. It is refreshing to hear from someone with vison rather than imitation. I had never heard of this artist until he was the opening act in my small local flok music club. I felt like I was hearing a combination of Bob Dylan, John Prine, Bill Morrisey and Bruce Springsteen with a whole lot of parts that I could not identify, except that it was very good. Buy this CD and others from JP Jones, see him if you can. IT will register as a very memorable evening.

              Album Description

Accompanying himself only on guitar and rack harp JP Jones is back with his 10th CD release on Vision Company Records. Featuring ten originals, one traditional song and the mythic spoken word piece Abu, Jeremiah is at once a return to Jones' roots and a radical affirmation of the artist's relationship with God.

As a young man Jones received a Fundamentalist Christian education at Baptist Bible Seminary in Clarks Summit, PA (and earned a BA degree in music composition from Amherst College in Massachusetts). His previous album titles include Angels on the Road, Back to Jerusalem, Salvation Street and Life and Death, but Jones doesn't write Christian music. "There is a place in all of us where we transcend our regional/religious factionalism and are redeemed in our celebration of life. Reconciling these differences, that sometimes seem so huge, so important, so intractable, offers a vision that completes an otherwise impoverished view of what it means to be human," says Jones.

Recorded in January 2004 in his one-bedroom Newport, RI apartment, the songs on Jeremiah cover a broad spectrum of human emotion and circumstance and come from all corners of the songwriter's 30-plus year career. So Early, Early In the Spring is a traditional song that has been in JP's repertoire since he first heard the Judy Collins version and learned to play acoustic guitar in the late 1960s. Still Life, a previously unrecorded song, dates to the early 1970s. The disc's signature tracks, Prophet in his Prime and Jeremiah were written in the months preceding recording. Working with a PARIS digital audio workstation Jones recorded and mixed all tracks himself. There are no overdubs.

5 out of 5 stars Opened for Jann Arden.......2007-04-13

I took my girlfriend to see Jann Arden last night, and it was awesome. The WHOLE show. Her opening act J P Hoe, received little applause when he opened, but when finished, received a half room standing O.

J P hails from Manitoba, Canada, and he is the lead vocals of Jp Hoe & the Truly Richards. His set was Stellar and the audience knew that. From his random radio play, to songs sang strictly for his friends wedding, he knew how to rock the show. Every song went full, no " because I'm live, I can change it a bit." Not once. Passion, intelligence, and humor exuded J P Hoe, and Halifax was ready for it. Confident and graceful, his c.d. sounds exactly like his live show last evening, and THAT IS A GREAT THING.

If you can buy this album, I strictly believe you should. It is the perfect c.d. for your entire day.

              Thanks.
