i saw fried for the first time in amazon.co.uk and it was 1,96£ so i bought it without thinking and now i understand that it was a big luck for me!This album contains great songs which goes between rNb and soul.Fried is group of 2 people -David Steele and the girl (whom he spent years to find!) named Jonte Short-
The sound goes between Lauren Hill and Macy Gray so this album is recommended for people who like RnB and soul.

I saw them on Jools Holland over Christmas and was very interested. I found the CD, which might be difficult if you're trying to find it in a shop, and it is absolutely stunning.

It all makes perfect sense somehow..........2006-04-19

I gave a great review to the original "Fried Glass Onions" collection, and Volume 2 doesn't disappoint either, there's just a little bit less originality since it's a follow-up.
The songs are VERY carefully selected - there's no "Yesterday" or "Hey Jude" here. They picked the bluesiest tracks off the "White Album" along with some others - the songs that would translate best into the Memphis sound.
Anyone can cover a Beatles song, but good performers find a way to translate them into their personal style - country, jazz, blues or whatever. The BEST artists make you feel like the song BELONGS in the new style. These versions of "Oh! Darling" and "Why Don't We Do it in the Road" made me realize those were blues songs to begin with!
I'm taking off a star for the covers of "In My Life" and "Here, There and Everywhere" which slow the album down a bit, and feel a little generic. Much better are the versions of "Back in the U.S.S.R.", "Lady Madonna" and "For You Blue", which basically re-work the songs completely from the ground up.
It's a great listen, and your toes WILL tap. There's lots of energy and fun.

In my opinion, the score to this film is superior to the film itself. It's the only motion picture score that truly captures the sweet melancholy of the Fall. Try listening to it with headphones and you'll hear a highly dimensional sound, delicate and subtle. Reflective and spiritual. Just close your eyes and you'll feel the brisk autumn wind against your face, you'll see orange and brown leaves falling from the trees, and you'll hear the sounds of children carving jack o'lanterns. It's a short score, but truly excellent.

The tracks " Visiting Ruth" and "Ghost Train" really make you think about the meaning of the film and what it says. The others add to the real flavor of Southern life which really is a unique characteristic. I love this film - I hope that if you haven't seen it and you do someday, that you will feel the same.

Listen to the samples, these are poorly reproduced copies. Electronic music especially is extremely hard to reproduce exact "voices" for the notes.

"Dr. Strangelove, The Shining & Spartacus ~ Kubrick".......2005-03-11

One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album "2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick", featuring just a handful of films and scores from writer/director Stanley Kubrick......but what an impact they have made on audiences everywhere over the years...his shoes are not easy to fill in the world of film making.

Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for three roles, which included a U.S. President in "DR. STRANGELOVE, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND LOVE THE BOMB"(1964), besides Sellers we have Sterling Hayden(crazed General) and George C. Scott(gum chewing insanity), but Slim Pickens steals the show with his wild ride on the "bomb"..."THE KILLING" (1956), "PATHS OF GLORY" (1957) and "SPARTACUS" (1960), an original true story of a gladitor(Kirk Douglas) who leads other slaves into rebellion against a powerful Rome in 73 B.C...actor and executive producer Douglas was magnificent in the film, with brilliant Kubrick directing...outstanding score by Alex North..."LOLITA" (1962), "2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY" (1968), "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" (1971), master film maker Kubrick pulled out all the stops on this one, Malcolm McDowell(sadistic punk is funny fierce psychopath) a cult following with memorable scenes..."BARRY LYNDON" (1975), adventures of an Irish gambler whose transition from innocence into the pit of aristocracy in the 18th Century...Ryan O'Neal stars, never better in a role..."THE SHINING" (1980), we know Jack Nicholson can go off the deep end, but in this film(he's completely off the charts), can think of no other actor that can pull this off..."FULL METAL JACKET" (1987)...quite a line up from one of the industries leaders in film making, and the scores that pulled them off.

Hats off to The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mark Ayres...Crouch End Festival Chorus, conducted by Bateman...James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer)...and the many soloist Tomas Lerst on fiddle, Vaclay Skyora on tin whistle, Zbynka Solcova on celtic harp, Gareth Williams on harpsichord and Jaraslava Eliasova on piano...and a big thank you to Silva Screen for keeping all of us "film-score-buffs" in a happy mood...gotta love it!

Big John.......2007-03-13

John Hammond was my first experience with white man's blues from his very first Vanguard albums. I followed his career closely for many years until he seemed to lose his way in the mid-70's. I think the high water mark of his career was the three albums he did for Atlantic in the late 60's and "Southern Fried" is the top of the pile. Great singing, great songs, great, great band of Muscle Shoals regulars (plus Duane Allman) and a vibe he hasn't been able to achieve since. I have all his early to mid-period stuff on CD and vinyl, many twice or thrice over, and reckon he's one of the best white bluesmen. There must be some enterprising record label out there than can gather together all John's Atlantic material (plus unreleased stuff) and put together a proper collectors retrospective CD. Then get a proper and sympathetic box set of his Vanguard material (the current re-releases of this material is a dog's breakfast) and finally pull together a double CD of the best of his Columbia, Capricorn, Rounder and other minor label material. Then we may be doing justice to this excellent bluesman who has done as much for the "originals" as any white boy could. With the current interest in him at an all-time high, there must be a market for his earlier, more traditional blues material. As a footnote, I think the cover of the original vinyl "Southern Fried" album (not the one shown here) is one of the top 20 album covers of all-time; snake-skin suit, Gold-Top Gibson guitar, F**k me pose and all the strut and bluster of a man at the top of his game.

A personal favorite of mine for 30 years.......2003-02-21

Something special occurred when John Hammond's powerful vocals, guitar, and harmonica were paired with the legendary Muscle Shoals "Swampers" -- studio musicians who had a magical ability to infuse all their recording projects with a terrific combination of soulful RnB and country-flavored blues feeling. For me, they are just as responsible as Hammond for why this album turned out so well. The added presence of their frequent guest collaborator, Duane Allman, on lead and bottleneck slide guitar for several tracks doesn't hurt either. If this album were to be recorded today, the production and sound quality would undoubtedly be fuller, but the feel of the players could not be bettered. (I've always thought of this album as a sort of a companion piece to Boz Scaggs's excellent self-titled 1969 solo album on Atlantic, recorded in the same studio with all the same people.) A solid rhythm section, tasteful supporting keyboard and guitar work, and judicious use of a potent horn section all yield marvelous results -- plus Hammond's vocals and harmonica work here are knockouts. The raw passion and energy of his performance offset the other musicians' more polished and relaxed approach so that things don't sound too smooth and laid-back. I should mention that this CD reissue is nicely packaged and sounds really good, but there are no added liner notes or bonus tracks -- and the listing of tracks and credits is marred by some embarrassingly stupid typos (like crediting the song "Nadine" to "Chuckr" Berry, and dropping the second "y" in the title of "Mystery Train"). Of course, what's important is the music, and it's great. I thought so when I first heard this album in the early 1970s, and time has not changed my opinion.

Deep Fried, Hot 'N Spicy Southern Boogie.......2002-12-03

At long last the CD debut of this sizzling hot John Hammond/Muscle Shoals Studio masterpiece. Hammond cranks it out, as he's accompanied by the deft rhythm section of Barry Beckett; keyboards, Eddie Hinton; guitar, David Hood; bass and Roger Hawkins; drums. In addition he is joined on four tracks by slide guitar virtuoso, the legendary Duane Allman. Those familiar with the Duane Allman anthologies (volumes 1 & 2) can attest to the sonic wail of Duane and John trading licks on Shake For Me and Cryin' For My Baby.

Southern Fried stands along side other Muscle Shoals great R&B classics like Johnny Jenkins Ton Ton Machutte and Boz Scaggs self titled Atlantic Records album with Duane Allman on slide guitar and doboro. Just check out the writting credits on this puppy...Willie Dixon, Chester Burnett (aka Howlin Wolf), Chuck Willis, Chuck Berry and McKinley Morganfield (shame on you if you didn't recognize Muddy Waters real name). Good live set from Bernard Allison.......2007-02-06

This is from a live radio broadcast and is about 58 minutes long. It features Allsion's brand of electric blues in a live setting with room for guitar solos and room to stretch out. He covers a few of his dad's tunes here, a Buddy Guy song, and others. If you're a fan of modern electric blues done at pretty high volume, this is topnotch stuff.

Before "Jaws" there was the "Doomsday Machine"..........2007-05-18

Steven Spielberg's Jaws has one of the most recognizable movie themes ever..the shark theme. But the "da-dum da-dum" music that made John Williams's career was already done ten years earlier...and is on this on this soundtrack.

The Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine featured an ominous machine was the sci fi equivalent of a giant shark: a silent, big, grey behemoth that swallowed spaceships whole. The tension was established via the soundtrack by a simple "da-dum" theme. Like "Jaws", it would start slowly and softly and gradually turn up the tempo and the volume.

I think "Doomsday Machine" is a great soundtrack by itself. "Amok Time" is a terrific companion...its a completely different sound with a sixties pseudo-spiritual approach. But the fight theme is a classic. Both of these soundtracks on a single CD make this one a winner.

Star Trek : Volume 2.......2007-01-17

Star Trek music is great if you like the television series. I grew up with Star Trek in the late 70's and 80's watching reruns and videos with my dad that he had recorded off of t.v. Two of my favorite episodes are featured here on "Volume 2". "The Doomsday Machine" and "Amok Time". These are classics of the Star Trek juggernaut. It is different just listening to the music. You understandably hear things that you otherwise would not hear while watching an episode. "Volume 2" sounds like it was recorded in the 60's. 1967 to be precise. What I mean to say is that when the music was recorded there were limitations as far as recoding equipment goes. It really sounds like a 1960's soundtrack but is unique in it's approach. As far as I know, this is not a remastered cd and I can tell. I wish they would have boosted up the levels and made it louder. A little more bass would make this a great sounding cd but don't let that stop you from buying it. It is a really great soundtrack that no sci-fi fan should be without.

Music composers Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried are two of the better music writers for television back in the late 1960's. Both were famous for scores for other things (Kaplan for "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" and Fried for "Gilligan's Island"), but showed that they could create music for a then new project: Star Trek.

Kaplan's score for "The Doomsday Machine" emphasized what was going on in each scene, underscoring how tension packed the episode was when it was made in 1967. (With the Special Effects that are available now, if they ever redo Star Trek, this is one episode that would seriously "amp up" the tension!!)

Fried, on the other hand, used his impressive Jazz training to show Mr. Spock in his "pon farr" state, and also to give the previously never seen before Planet Vulcan an alien atmosphere. Of course, the famous music for the fight scene between Spock and Kirk has been imitated often, but never topped.

An excellent CD for music and Classic TV fans.

Neil Norman(executive producer), just keeps cranking them out...take for instance "STAR TREK:ORIGINAL TV SOUNDTRACK("The Cage" & "Where No Man Has Gone Before")(GNPD-8006)...the legendary Alexander Courage shares his talent for scoring with his famous Sci-Fi opening theme, every cue has the Courage signature.

For this "Volume Two" from episodes "THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE"(Kaplan) and "AMOK TIME"(Fried), the creator of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry chose two veterans Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried...both composers use of full orchestra was both rewarding and beneficial to the plot and substance of the series...although Fried's cues were darker in nature, gave us a feeling transformation into another time and place...while Kaplan's composition showed the audience what loss and despair could do to any human being...a highlight is "THE PROCESSIONAL"(Track 20) and "THE CHALLENGE"(Track 21), memorable cues that leaves one remembering that particular episode of the series...both composers hit the mark...dead on.

You might enjoy other Star Trek albums from GNP Crescendo ~ "Star Trek:Original TV Series Sound Effects"(GNPD-8010)..."Star Trek:The Next Generation:Encounter At Farpoint"(GNPD-8012)..."Star Trek:The Next Generation Volume Two"(GNPD-8026)...all worthy of a good listen.

Tremendously inventive, totally surprising........2001-01-09

I was astonished to see this music actually available. Being somany, many years since the first production date, I would hardly haveexpected to find something preserved so accurately. This is, in fact aperfect recording. The music itself is really astonishing. Ratherthan an endless trundling out of the Star Trek theme, Sol Kaplan comesup with a collection of brilliant orchestral minatures in which hedisplays an absolute and total command of large scale orchestralwriting. I would guess his major influences would be Sibelius, Mahler,and probably Richard Strauss, but you would have to also certainlyinclude Edgar Varese and possibly Jacob Druckmann. Some of his ideasappear to spring from a probably uncatalogued collection of martialthemes, but his ability to paint vivid and powerful colours is likenothing I have heard before. Some of the themes reach really deep andwill endure for many decades to come. The way he ties in the StarTrek theme itself is very clever and elegant, making quite a trick inthe tail towards the end of the piece... What on earth has this dearfellow done since, or before? I am very, very impressed with this andwould absolutely recommend it to anyone, even classical music buffs.

Most of these interpretations have a definitive, identifiable Memphis twist. Daddy Mack Orr's "Get Back" is a stripped-down, blues rendition. Bob Simon & Eddie Harrison's "Two Of Us" sounds like vintage Sam & Dave from the Stax Records era. Most of these versions are either R&B or soul infused, although funk treatments of "The One After 909" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" take the groove a little deeper. The Memphis All-Stars version of "Drive My Car" is absolutely unstoppable and demonstrates the undeniable potency of a four-piece soul band. These 14 tracks represent a diverse pool of contemporary Memphis talent offering fresh versions of Beatles songs that will not disappoint even the most discerning Beatles fan. I received this CD as a gift and just two days into it I can't get enough of "Helter Skelter". I was not much of a fan of the original version but this one skoots! I'll be playing this CD for awhile..........!

Funking with the Beatles.......2007-04-21

I saw this band last night at the Gibson Guitar Factory Lounge in Memphis and was spellbound (and I am not easily entertained). I really expected to be bored but was awed. If you get the rare chance to see this collection of Memphis' best talent live, don't miss it, you'll have a ball. These selections are not note for note covers (and what good would that be?) but reworked Beatles smothered in Memphis funk. Some of the arrangements are startling innovative (ever heard a psychedelic flute or a gospel version of All You Need is Love?) and all are fun. The musicianship throughout is first rate. The cds are not the same as seeing Fried Glass Onions live but all 3 cds belong in any Beatle fan's collection. There are a few misses across the 3 cds--none of the cuts make you run to the player to skip them--but you'll return to the real jewels in these 3 cds for years to come. Get all 3, you won't regret it. By the way, I have no connection to this band and have never before bothered to write a review.

Happiness is...this take on the Beatles.......2007-04-10

Beatles fans are in for a treat when they load this disk into their CD players. Classic Beatle songs are sung & played as never imagined before. Listen to a soulful, haunting version of Blackbird by Jackie Johnson,or Two of Us getting the Sam & Dave treatment (by Simon & Harrison),a cool funked up rendition of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window (Matt Tudor)is lots of fun. Old Brown Shoe, The One After 909, and others are also all here on Volume One. In my opinion, there are a couple of misses. Notably Get Back is especially hard on the ears. Way overall though, if you love the Beatles, and can handle these twisted variations, by all means go for it. You won't experience a hard day's night listening to it.

Alas, I can't recommend Volume 2, but I haven't heard #3 yet, so there is still hope for more great music.

pleasant surprise.......2007-01-23

this CD would have been low on my radar except for some enthusiastic reviews from previous consumers. they were right that any beatles fan who likes good music would like this CD. having been to the rock and soul museum in memphis recently, i got the other two in this set, volumes 2 and 3. the first one is the best and the first to buy. i think this CD is a definite winner.

Most Are Great.......2006-03-15

Although there are a few cuts that I am not thrilled with, over all, this album adds some interesting cuts to my library, originally recorded by the best band of all time. It does have the Memphis feel throughout. Unfortunate that a few of the bands should have stayed in the lounges.

This is an outstanding recording that does full justice to the beauty of German pre-Bach song. Scholl is unparalleled in the subtle way he treats every single song. The listener gets carried away by the different moods the tunes carry: once brooding and sad, other times very exuberant and full of joy. Having grown up with the music of Schutz and Buxtehude in a northern German medieval town, I have heard many weak renderings of this music that do not do justice to its inherent pious beauty. Scholl lets it sparkle and shine the way it deserves to be sung.

This was my first Andreas Scholl CD, I purchased it immediately after hearing it played in a store. From the first listen over a year ago until now it still profoundly affects me. Alternatingly slow and brooding to more uptempo, the beautiful music and haunting voice are the perfect accompaniment to those moments of pensive introspection.

I loved Heroes, but this is my favorite Scholl collection so far. Alternatingly exuberant, forceful, and delicate, his enchanting voice is refined and controlled yet emotive. Countertenor fans will not be disappointed.

Sold out in the shops.......1998-12-28

This is a beautiful collection of pre-Bach German sacred music, which probably has the distinction of being the first such to break into Classical charts. Clever programming and marketing by Harmonia Mundi obviously hasn't hurt any there, but this still remains a great disc.

Most of the tracks are well known and oft recorded, notably by Scholl's teacher Rene Jacobs. Schutz features three times (SWV307,308,348), Buxtehude twice (BuxWV76, Jubilate), along with two standards of the genre: JC Bach's Ach dass ich Wasser's g'nug, and Tunder's Ach Herr lass deine lieben Engelein. The only discoveries are Philipp Heinrich Erlebach 1657-1714: Wer sich dem Himmel ubergehen, and a protestant reworking of Rovetta's Salve Regina into Salve mi Jesu. The disc also features two short instrumental pieces by Legrenzi and Albertini.

The only weak point of the package is exactly that - the packaging. The CD comes in a transparent plastic sleeve and then has a trendy (Made in Italy) 3-leave card case with the booklet (as illustrated above.. the cover has Herr Scholl looking dapper in a white tie) hidden in an envelope at the back. Novelty apart this is no improvement on the usual CD case. Also the sleeve and booklet err in getting Rovetta (original composer of Salve mi Jesu) and Tunder (as above) mixed up.

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
