Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Waters never managed to build on the crossover success of her first single, "Gypsy Woman," though her efforts this time around suggest she's still up to the challenge. The sing-song, nursery rhyme-patterned "Mamma Told Me" is a catchy tune, and the lingering buzz in the clubs from her Dennis Rodman collaboration "Just a Freak" (included here) could be extended to "Body Music." A too-literal cover of Prince's "Uptown" isn't a high point, but her NBA At 50 anthem "Say ... If You Feel Alright" is a blast. --Jeff Bateman

This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars rhythm music.......2007-06-08

I bought this for a friend after I bought it for myself. Great variety of songs. Wonderful for parties. Would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars red hot and best!.......2007-05-14

of the many red hots i've listened to, this one is the best!

the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.

among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.

the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.

4 out of 5 stars New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30

Now, mind you, I can't tell the samba from the bossa nova from...some other type of music that might be played in Brazil. But I still have an interest in hearing the quasi-tropical cocktail lounge-style pop tunes of this mighty South American giant. They speak Portugese there, you know. And are known to launch at a moment's notice into the lamabada, which is a forbidden dance.

Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).

Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".

The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.

Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.

4 out of 5 stars Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO.......2004-03-03

I enjoyed 1.Used Your Head by Money Mark, 2.Corcovado done by Everything but the Girl, the funkie beats were great, 3.Desafinado done by Astrud Gilberto & George Michael was soothing and relaxing, 4.Non-Fiction Burning was enjoyable 5.Crystal Waters' version of The Boy from Ipenema, LOVED IT!! the music makes your body want to move, it will be favorite, 7.Seguranca (Security) done by MAXWELL with that sultry soft voice of his & the music, this is a favorite, 8.E Preciso Perdoar done by Cesaria Evora & Caetano Veloso w/Ryuichi Sakamoto on the keyboard, Damn I love Cesaria's voice, she got off, this is definetly a favorite, 10.Water to Drink by Incognito w/Omar & Anna Caram was nice, 11.Dancing by Milton Nascimento was enjoyable, 12.How Insensitive done by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Sting, I didn't care for Sting singing this song, I do enjoy Sting's music but not this, he wasn't the man for it. 13.Water of March done by David Byrne & Marisa Monte was okay, but I enjoy Al Jarreau & Oleta Adams rendition on "A Twist of Jobim" better, 15.One Note Samba/Surfboard by Stereolab & Herbie Mann, I didn't care for that techno or computer sounding stuff, it sounded like the music on The Wiz when they were trying to get away from the trash cans, it will get a skip, 17.Black Orpheus Dub by Mad Professor, it had sort of a Rasta, funk, techno flair which was okay, 18.Chico Science & X DJ Soul Slinger, I couldn't get into that either, that will get a skip too, 19.Funk'N Lata's Sambadrome, was short & funky, 20.Giberto Gil's Refazenda, his voice went well with the song, 21.Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo done by Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto was nice, but the sound was off, it sounded like they were singing in a tube. I manly purchased this CD because it had my 2 favorite singers Maxwell and Cesaria Evora & I enjoyed both of their songs immensely. I am totally satisfied with this purchase and it will be one of my favorite CDs which I listen to often.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16

If you like Bossa Nova, particularly Antonio Carlos Jobim, you will love this CD. It has covers by many current artists of his songs, as well as some other Brazilian music. I like how the liner has the lyrics in English, but almost all the songs are in Portuguese. The David Byrne Waters of March in an exception, where he sings in English, and a woman is singing in Portuguese, but it works out very well.

An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

Crystal Waters's run of hit singles captures an eclectic but essentially pop side of the house-music experience. Whether hymning a "Gypsy Woman" in the infernally catchy debut hit ("La da dee, la da da") that allowed this diva to quit her secretarial job, investigating life "In de Ghetto," or simply celebrating "100% Pure Love," her laidback persona marks each song: these aren't just her producers' triumphs. This best-of mixes radio-length versions with dance-floor epics (both, in the case of "Gypsy Woman") and also features her "Boy from Ipanema" from the Red Hot + Rio compilation. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Dance and Dance again ladadeeladadow.......2007-03-05

For awhile in the 90's it looked like Crystal Waters was set to take over from Donna Summer as 'Queen of Dance' - and this compilation of her hits bears testimony to her undisputable knack for catchy lyrics and hooks bound to make you move your feet. Undoubtedly her biggest hit is the almost 'socially aware' Gypsey Woman (She's Homeless) and there are two additional remixes included here; The Stripped to the Bone Mix, and the awesome 1998 remix. Other standout tracks include Just A Freak, Making Happy The Boy From Ipanema, and 100% Pure Love. Waters has a good voice but unfortunately after awhile it becomes monotonous and a bit same. But crank up the volume, turn up the bass and dance and dance again.

4 out of 5 stars Hopefully a remastered greatest hits will come.......2005-11-02

Hopefully, Crystal Waters Greatest Hits will be re-released one day in a remastered edition. These tracks sound "quiet" and not quite as amplified as they could be when played in a MP3 player like an IPOD. The good songs are here. Crystal is best known for her hit "Gypsy Woman," but songs like "Surprise" and "Good Lovin'" were fan favorites. It's a nice set list and as mentioned it deserves the remaster treatement.

    4 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite get 5 stars.......2003-01-05

House diva Crystal Waters gives us basically a trip down memory lane with this greatest hits compilation. You get 3 versions of "Gypsy Woman"(the original version, the 'Strip to the Bone Mix', and a special 1998 remix; why it wasn't put as a separate track, I don't know.). You also get "100% Pure Love", "Just A Freak"(all three were her biggest hits), "Relax", "Say...If You Feel Alright" (not as big, but still memorable), some of her not-so-great releases, and even some unreleased tracks ("Spin Me", "The Boy From Ipanema"). Now after all of that, there still feels like something is missing. First of all, her radio mix of "100% Pure Love" was much better, second of all, the remix of "Makin' Happy" is just too long. Third of all, one of her releases ("What I Need") isn't even on the CD, and that was a tight song. Those are the only things that keep me from giving the Cd 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Just try NOT to dance when you listen to this album.......2002-10-21

Crystal Waters has a great voice and great producers to have made such a wonderful body of work that is all highlighted on this Greatest Hits album.

The album gets you dancing and singing for over an hour, all the while, broadening all musical horizons. She creates great songs for the dancing fool and making the sad happy again. These songs lift up the weary soul. Just try and NOT dance and sing when you listen to this album. It's lots of fun.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits from Miss Waters.......2002-06-04

This solid collection from Baltimore's own Crystal Waters compiles her hits duirng the 1990's. Never mind that she lacked a great voice: what mattered were the slammin' house BEATS, provided by Maryland-based DJs the Basement Boys. It's tempting to dismiss Miss Waters as a one-hit-wonder, but the truth of the matter is, she released a string of radio/club hits like "Makin' Happy," "Gypsy Woman," "100% Pure Love," and so forth. Crystal Waters was one of the few club/dance divas that mattered, and this CD will make a nice addition to your collection.

These remixes are brutal. They are useless, the vocals have all been stripped from the mixes (except for the "Club Mix" and "Radio Mix"), and the only mix that has vocals ("Trance Vox"), only starts out with the a cappella, and then loses any vocals when the beat comes in. Club-friendly mixes these ain't. Stick to the original version.

5 out of 5 stars Spirit Lifting CD.......2005-04-07

I was blessed to see Ms. Waters in Dallas TX at the Potter's House when she came as a guest of Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers. He introduced her as a close friend. She sang 'Uzziah'. He then encouraged her to sing 'Victory'. The song resonated in my soul so I was sure to find the CD when I returned home. This CD has blessed me for the past 3 years. Every song takes me one step closer to the Father. I've listened to the CD on the way to work and at my desk. I was led to listen to it last week. Later when reading my e-mails, I learned that Brenda has been gathered to her people. Her voice is indeed a gift to all of us who have heard her and continue to be fed by her CD. If you don't have it, I would get it while it is still available. It will lift up your soul whenever you are afflicted with the spiritual blahs. I thank God that I was blessed to see her sing in person and I thank him again for the CD.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS BRENDA'S LAST CD SO PLEASE GET IT.......2005-03-23

My condolences goes out to Hedrick (Brenda's daughter) and to the family of Mrs. Waters, who passed away March 17,2005 which was 2 years to date from my father's death. The gospel world is saddened at the loss, but Heaven is overjoyed to gain a soldier winning the battle. I remember Brenda when I was in my early teens. She used to come to North Carolina and do workshops as well as just come to visit a group that my father sang with called the Bethel Male Chorus who, in their time, was one of the local elite gospel groups. I remember her sense of humor, yet seriousness when it came to singing for Lord. I remember one time I was in a rehearsal she was teaching. I was talking and not listening and she called me out...my father's name was Eddie and she would refer to me as "lil eddie" Being so young, I was embarrassed and a bit upset at her for chastising me in front of all those people, but she never apologized. Later that night when it was time to perform she saw me and gave me a kiss on my cheek and said "lil eddie I know you mad at me but I would rather that than God not being pleased with us. He deserves the best that we can give him and that's what I want you to remember baby" Now that was atleast 20 years ago and to this day I'm thankful for that influence which helped me as a gospel writer and minister of music. I advise everyone to get this cd. She not only was a good singer and musician, but she lived what she sang about in her songs. I love you Brenda. Hug my daddy for me and I'll see yall one day....

I am greatful for this ministry. BW has an awesome CD and I encourage ANYONE that loves JESUS and MUSIC to purchase this CD. You won't be disappointed. BW blessed Kansas City in 2001 with her sense of humor and her lovely voice. We won't forget that experience. From one music lover to another your CD collection will be greatful.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2000-07-23

Ms. Waters you are great..I got a chance to sing in the COGIC AIMS 2000 National Choir in Houston, Tx, inwhich you taught us VICTORY. I was so amazed of your talent at rehearsal Sat morning 7/8/00 and then that night WOW! again, you are great. I came back home hoping to find you on BlackGospel...indeed I did and guest what...it's a must have.

    Thank you

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Old and New Sounds of Gospel.......2000-06-28

Brenda Waters-Belivers and Friends is a fine addition to your gospel collection. She infuses the best of the old and new sounds of gospel. She has learned well from the old masters, James Cleveland and " The Mastro" Thomas Whitfield. "Victory" is the return to the traditonal gospel sound of the Donald Vails Choralers and James Cleveland and is this CD's signature song. It has a rousing, driving chorus that will make you get up and shout "Victory"! Another standout tune is "Absent from the Body". This song brings you into the prescene of the Lord and is a must while driving to work or on long trips. It is soothing and uplifting. "First Giving Honor" is a toe tapping, hand clapping, get up and shout Halleluia song. You just can't keep from giving God praises while listening and singing. "Stand" features the well trained choir, trio and a phenomenal solist that hits glass-shattering high notes and the choir and soloist, Brenda Waters sing an impressive choral round. This CD is a must for any music collector who wants the best of the old and new. It does what gospel music should do: Bring the good news of the gospel in song. Brenda Waters sings, plays and directs the choir on this CD. She is a mastro in the tradition of Thomas Whitfield and Richard Smallwood and she is at the top of her craft. Brenda is the consumate artist. She does it all and she does it all very well. I think the greatest testament to this CD is that it blesses me and brings me into the prescence of the Lord everytime I hear it. This CD is not to be missed!

I love 100% Pure Love and a couple of others, but I was very disappointed that they didn't have the version of "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" that made her blow up. For me it's about the whole quality package, not a quantity of songs on a CD, which explains why I rated it as low as I did.

This collection YUK!, why do they include non-hits that aren't that good!, I would recommend better the 1999 collection "The Best Of Crystal Waters", but I'm waiting for a real collection that includes "What I Need" , the new dance club hits "Come On Down" and "My Time", and the fast version of "Relax"(Lorimmer Remix Edit), I Know Gypsy, 100% Pure Love are her greatest hits, but this collection do not showcase her supreme dance queen title, I dunno know this collection just sux...not worth even the great cheap price. Not worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Solid dance collection.......2004-01-26

I know the 20th Century Masters collections get a bad rap but I rather like them. They happen to be moderately priced collections with excellent remastering with a handful of the artist's most popular hits. This collection of Crystal Waters features her biggest hits ("Gypsy Woman", "100% Pure Love") plus lesser known songs ("Just A Freak" and her remake of "The Girl From Ipanema" reworked into "The Boy From Ipanema"). It doesn't include two of my favourite Waters tracks, "Relax" and "Say...If You Feel Alright", but this is still a good collection especially if you like '90s house music.

4 out of 5 stars classic stripped down house........2004-04-20

You either really love this album or hate it. This album was a true testament to how House music was begining to gain some respect coming from the underground in the early 90's. Crystal was not the best singer but her idiosyncratic vocals, the seriousness of her songwriting, and the stripped down house production(with a touch of jazz) was a winning combination. Whether musing on the abandonment of a child(Small Cry), the freakiness of sex(Makin' Happy), spouse abuse(Surprise, Deepest of Hearts), or the observance of the homeless(Gypsy Woman) it's club music with a consience. I actually thought this was better than her follow-up "Storyteller".

    5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating.......2004-01-09

When I first moved to NYC, Gypsy Woman was playing all over the place in the early summer of 1991. You couldn't escape.
Hot97 used to be a dance music station in NYC, and it played Gypsy Woman 50 times a day. The Puerto Rican boys blasted it out of their cars. I didn't go to clubs then, so I guess I was missing a big deal of Crystal Waters, but the song got me anyways. It was a HOT summer and Gypsy Woman reminds me of that summer forever.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Grace Jones or Madonna , you'll love this!.......2003-04-29

This is a satidfactory debut album. She is very unique which makes her interesting to listen to. Highlights here include "She's Homeless", "Surprise", "Makin' Happy" & "Good Lovin'". The remaining tracks are pleasant. A worthwhile album by a intensely creative artist that should be highly regarded like Madonna. The besy introduction to Crystal Waters is her more accessable 1997 self-tittled release.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2003-04-27

After the hype and over-hype of "Gypsy Woman" dies down we still have a good album in "Surprise". This has an interesting mixture of House and R&B tracks which makes it a strong album. The fact that Basement Boys produced it helps out as well -- Basement Boys is now a world-wide phenom! Baltimore was very well represented.

    5 out of 5 stars Still Powerful.......2003-03-08

This Lady's stuff is awesome house music which can be listened to. A lot of those who despise this were angered by its domination while thier favourites fell. Its still the best of its kind, and its current price in UK shows, still selling at twice the price of many of today's music. If only she had not changed her style and stuck to this stuff. I am saving money to get one even in this new era.

You know that skit from Saturday Night Live, the one where the two guys stand around a nightclub bobbing their heads and trying in vain to pick up women? Right, well this is the perfect disc for their head-bobbing. A slick dance-popper in the same vein as, say, Culture Beat or Haddaway, Crystal Waters kicks off Storyteller with her dancefloor trump-card: "100% Pure Love," as sure a club hit as was released in 1994. The rest is a bit less easily typecast--a few organs and ballads amid all the cow-bells--but it never strays too far from the basic formula: Unabashedly cheesy, and generally better off for it. Ain't no one gonna confuse this with Aphex Twin anyway. --Keven McAlester

      4 out of 5 stars 100% PURE JOY!.......2003-10-10

Storyteller is the fution of r&b and dance music well crafted. Crystal Waters was never reconigzed as a great talented writer and performer, although she well deserve the honor, Waters voice is enchanting and the dance sounds are not just crazy bumping beats, they also include great lyrics to it. "100% Pure Love" charted at #11 back in 1994, this is a undoubtly club classic, "Ghetto Day" mellow, mellow, great meaning, not usual for a dance oriented act, "Regardless" filler, "I Believe I Love You" soulful funny song!, "Relax" smooth dance joint, so fresh to enjoy, great track, bubbling under back in 1995, "What I Need" a plead song!, what I need is another great Crystal Waters album, this song resembles 100%, is great, saussy, "Storyteller" smooth song, great coffee shop type, "Is It For Me" jazzy joint, snappy, and fast. "Listen For My Beep" kind of boring, but manages to end it great. "Daddy Do" story about family violence, in a danceable way, great track. "Lover Lay Low" forgeattable song. This album should fullfil your needs for great dance music and chillout joints, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Sophomore Effort.......2003-04-27

Here we have more mixing-it-up with House tracks, R&B tracks and a couple of ballads. The result is another great album. Baltimore is still well represented!

      4 out of 5 stars A "story" worth telling.......2002-10-27

Crystal Waters is forever to be linked with her monster 1991 smash "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)", a song that was evenly praised and condemned. Who can forget Kim Wayans's highly hilarious parody featured on "In Living Color"?

Based on the strength of this album's hit single "100% Pure Love", a disco dynamo, I purchased the disc. Well, some eight years later, I see the songwriter behind the throbbing beats.

Waters displays versatility in her writing that others work a lifetime to achieve. The songs range from the playfully erotic (the previously mentioned "100%" and the equally suggestive "What I Need") to a 90's version of a "torch song" in the title cut, along with a tune of social commentary ("Listen For My Beep"). She throws in a little inspirational ditty with the dance-friendly "Relax".

The best cut, however, samples heavily from the Fifth Dimension's "Stone Cold Picnic." "Ghetto Day" allow Waters to deftly explore the balance between the sadness and joys of life in the urban jungle. It may be dark, at times, but the sun does eventually shine.

And Waters, herself, gives off many "rays" on this above-average album.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest dance cd ever!!!!.......1999-04-05

This is a must have for anyone who is into house,or dance, music! Every song on here is a winner, including the mega-hit "100 % Pure Love". Trust me-Buy this CD!!!!!!!
