Stronger Than Pride - 4.5 stars.......2006-06-24
The songs just flow into each other so seamlessly that it is one of the discs that I can listen to from start to finish - the only song that kept me from giving it a full 5 is the last track - I like the music production but not the song as a whole.
My favorite tracks are: KEEP LOOKING - love this song, always encourages me to look to the positive side of life and not to let things get me down; LOVE IS STRONGER THAN PRIDE - love the spare beauty of her voice with the very low key music; NOTHING CAN COME BETWEEN US - very catchy; CLEAN HEART - again, the spare production of this song is perfection; PARADISE & NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY.
For those who are trying to build a Sade collection, I'd recommend this disc - the strong songs and excellent music production will have you reaching for this disc over & over again.

I love this album like, like an Italian.......2005-10-19
The other sensation this album evokes, also a hallmark of the Sade sound, is melancholy. Haunt Me, Keep Looking, I Never Thought I'd See the Day, and many of the other songs (save for the tropical and romantic Paradise) have a somewhat lonely, sad undertone. It reminds me of Eddie Murphy's comments in the movie "Boomerang." He tells Halle Berry that he is having the kind of sad day where he just wants to go home, stare at the wall, and listen to Sade. I'm sure he listened to Love is Stronger Than Pride quite a few times that day.
There are, however, two songs that stand out for me.
Love is Stronger Than Pride is almost a hymn. After the betrayal of a lover, Sade is opening her heart again, admitting that though she's not good at forgiving she may give her lover another chance because, after all, love is stronger than pride. And since this song seems to be a hymn to forgiveness, it always makes me think of "A Course In Miracles," the spiritual book that says we find peace through forgiveness. Love is Stronger Than Pride came into my life back in 1997 when I first found "A Course In Miracles." They seemed to be perfect companions. Love is Stronger Than Pride was my theme song for a car trip I took with my friend, Mary Jean, back in 1997. We visited Multnomah Falls and Bridge of the Gods, on the Columbia River Gorge outside of Portland. The mist of the falls seemed a metaphor for the mist of forgiveness.
But the song that haunts me most is Clean Heart. At first, it comes across as a suave mid-tempo R&B song. Sade's delicate voice is little more than a whisper, almost drowned out by the rhythm section. It's the kind of breezy song you can't help but snap your fingers to. I couldn't understand the lyrics, which was fine because they seemed inconsequential, but from the gentle melody and sunny, laidback atmosphere, I figured it was a simple love song. Perhaps a predecessor to Cherish the Day.
After a few listens, I decided to take a look at the lyric sheet. My intuition, however, told me that doing so might be against better judgment. It seems that every time I think a song is light and fluffy, I later find a darker meaning. Once again, my intuition proved correct. The lyric sheet reveals that Clean Heart is actually about a man involved in a life of crime, in an attempt to escape a life of poverty.
"He straightened his belt, and with a lover's touch, he said I'm gonna bring home the things that are out of your clutch."
But the line that really gets me choked up, the line that haunts me, is, "He loved his daddy, though he never told him. And how he loved his mother. He loved, he loved her like, like an Italian."

Customer Reviews:
Not their best work, but it's OK.......2001-06-09
I have difficulty pinpointing exactly what it is about this CD that misses the mark. It just seems to be minus that "edge", that certain special "King's Singers touch" that is evident in most of their music. Part of it might be that the majority of these songs have one person doing the lead vocals and the rest of the group subordinated to the role of back-up singers. Don't get me wrong, they still do it well, but I bought the CD to hear all of them, preferably in more or less equal amounts, not five of them singing "oohs" and "aahs" and one soloist. Mind you, this demerit is (almost) forgiven by the fact that Bob Chilcott's solo voice is gorgeous, and I have no qualms whatsoever about the gentle, lilting touch he adds to Lift the Wings and In Your Eyes. In fact, I believe his voice is the most redeeming quality of this production!
I suppose I would also prefer this CD if there were more a cappella items (I think there are only 2, possibly 3), and they would do well to lose the guest lead vocalists whom they introduced for four of the songs. While it's always nice to see artists collaborating, I would take the King's Singers over the others any day!
My favourite tracks on here are most definitely the first four but, although I hate to say it, the whole calibre of the recording goes downhill from there. Vienna is just strange, and The Lord's Prayer, the final song on the CD, is so woeful I could barely stand to listen to it right through! Everything else falls into the "yeah, it's OK I guess" category - pleasant to listen to but not overly inspiring.
On balance, I'm glad I purchased it, but for those who are just beginning to love the King's Singers, a word of advice: If you want to hear this group sing contemporary music, Good Vibrations is a far superior album.
