Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson

4 out of 5 stars Different from House Party.......2007-05-14

I ordered this CD along with Dan Zanes House Party CD. My daughter loves the fun songs from the House Party CD better than the Night Time CD. I can't get her to listen to the slow songs on this cd although I really enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars We love this cd.......2007-02-11

This is in our babies room. Each night when we get ready for bed we listen to this cd. It winds her down a little and makes diaper changing a little more easier for us.

4 out of 5 stars children's music.......2006-10-29

This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars great music!.......2006-08-05

Our 22 mo. old loves this music much more than the kiddy tunes that mom and dad can hardly bear to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Dan Zanes Nightime is "Happy Music".......2006-07-27

I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

Saxophonist Karl Denson makes no bones about the fact that he plays a funky jazz tailor-made for people to get their groove on--and never more so than on The Bridge, an album that strays far from his jazz roots. Already known for his love affair with funk, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Greyboy Allstars, Denson adds some other interesting nonjazz wrinkles. A strong Afro-beat influence manifests itself in some slamming horn charts and percolating rhythms, particularly on "Elephants" and "Because of Her Beauty." Denson gets soulful on Curtis Mayfield's "Check Out Your Mind," doing a passable job with the vocals (several tunes here feature Denson singing) and embellishing it with sitar and surreal psychedelic production touches. The album also benefits from a hot production job from Erik Newsome, who captures the nearly rock & roll energy and intensity of the KDTU live experience. This is definitely one for the fans who like it when Denson does his high-energy groove thing. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars The Answer to your question is I never get enough.......2005-05-30

I have to be careful how often I play this album, because it hurts too much when it stops.
These guys are really good, the vibe fills you whether you know it or not. And when it stops... you become hollow inside, with cat-tongue scratches assaulting the pleasure centers of your brain. It's a painful Jones, but it's worth it. The answer to your question is I never get enough. Seriously, these guys have a great sound. Tranquil, yet insidiously agitating.

If I had to think of a criticism, I would say it's a touch too brassy. But since Karl Denson is a sax man, I think it just comes with the territory. I would like to hear a little more of the guitar and keys, and tune down the brass just a touch, but that's just me.

Trust me. Have I ever let you down?

Blown away!!! THE best thing on the block!!!!

totaly unique,...found this gem of a talent by freak coincidence,i have always found my best stuff by spontinaety .
Here in uk except for specialized "jazz watchers" Denson is easy to miss to the untrained eye,but found dance lesson played it and the rest is history!!!!!
I an wishing i had enough money to entice Karl Denson and his band over to gig in the uk!!!spread the gospel this man does for this muzak genre what Donny hathaway does for soul

5 out of 5 stars R&B Heaven.......2004-03-04

I wish that I could categorize this is as jazz or R&B but it combines the best of both musical worlds. Karl Denson has put together a collection of songs that are inspired by old school R&B guys with great sax solo's inspired by the likes of John Coltrane. It's really that good. The songs are fun to listen to and while they have that 60's and 70's charm, they are also refreshing and new. It's as if you were to discover an album from thirty years ago that you never listened to. This is the best cd I've heard in years. If you like funk, R&B, and jazz, this has it all for you. Buy it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Live???..more like A-live!!!.......2003-11-07

After purchasing "The Bridge" while listening to "How Fine Is That"(The cut was still playing!!) I actually stopped traffic when I saw a flyer announcing they were going to be in my home town of Ann Arbor, Mi.
After pulling a few strings so I could take off work I HAD to see them live. Needless to say I'm a member of the legions of fans that'll follow them wherever they play!
I grew up listening to Tower of Power, Sly & The Family Stone, War, Earth, Wind & Fire, just to name a few..and have seen them in concert...let me tell those who haven't seen Karl..they're right there in the pocket..one of the most energetic live performances I've seen in YEARS!! Two days later I'm still hoarse from cheering, yelling and partying..these guys aren't live...they're A-live!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Because of its Beauty.......2003-08-29

This album is, in my humble opinion, the pinnacle of Acid Jazz. The tracks are melodic, groovy, and highlight many styles and themes. When giving "The Bridge" a good listen, you are reminded of Curtis Mayfield, Lenny Kravitz, Nelly, and many others. If you are into Groove Collective or Liquid Soul, you will find this album somewhat legendary.

Highlights include "Because of Her Beauty"-- an incredible groove with an excellent 'call and response' melody. "Groove On" is the penultimate groove. Bass chords and great percussion highlight the track. I can't really put much more into words-- but I can say with certainty, you want to buy this album!

3 out of 5 stars Falls Short of Amazing .......2006-06-13

Ok. And so I've had this album on my Amazon.com Wishlist for over a year and a half now, and I just got this 2 weeks ago. So I probably don't have to explain the extreme anticipation I was experiencing prior to popping this one into the stereo.

But ah, the sheer disappointment I have suffered with this record since then is difficult to put into words. And that's because I'm such a massive fan of Lighthouse Family that I don't feel like writing a single bad review about them. In fact it pains me - so I won't.

All I will say is that you're better off not buying this one. A couple of remixes are good and most of the acoustic versions are nice... but all just fall short of being amazing - as should be (and has been) with all (the other) Lighthouse Family releases.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, soulful collaboration.......2004-10-27

"Simpatico" is the one word that I think best describes Willie Nelson and Kimmie Rhodes, two Texas crooners whose voices and musical inclinations meld with startling beauty. Either singer can crest to the top or fall back into humble harmonies in this set of ten fine duets. The songs are mostly Kimmie Rhodes originals, though Willie contributes two ("Valentine" and "It Will Always Be") with the remainder of the set coming from sources as disparate as Tom Waits (the wrote title track), Rodney Crowell and Rhodes' partner, Joe Gracey. For folks who like understated, well-crafted American music with deep, deep roots and perfect emotional pitch, this record is the real deal. Highly recommended!

In the 1990s the junction of jazz and funk has become quite a popular destination. Of course, soul-jazz was prominent among serious jazz cats throughout the 1960s and 1970s, but in the 1990s, the bug has spread to rock audiences who want extended jams and some space to dance. When it comes to blending danceable grooves with well-executed and thoughtful improvisation, San Diego's Greyboy Allstars are state-of-the-art, and as with most jam bands, the live stage is the true proving ground. Tenor sax player Karl Denson is the one with the serious "jazz cred" and he proves it here in abundance, but the remaining four are as tight as your old bar-mitzvah suit. As a whole, the quintet tends toward a smoother, more melodic brand of funk, one with dollops of real "soul music," making this live record a treat for both your brain and your behind. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars question.......2006-04-05

is it really necessary to take minute-long solos in every song? Really? If you like your solos long-winded and lacking in destination, and your lyrics trite (Get a Job???), check these guys out. If you actually plan on listening to the music you buy, skip it.

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes it gels, sometimes it doesn't.......2003-10-09

The Greyboy Allstars come out with a take no prisoners, old school slab of funked up jazz on Hot Dog, which allows everyone a chance to be front and center. This almost perfect opening sets a high mark, too high it turns out. Freshman 10 takes the quintet down a more soulful avenue, highlighted by sparkling keyboards.

The first signs of trouble crop up in Get a Job and daunt the overall recording in the excesses of Tenor Man and an awful adaptation of Check Out Your Mind (perhaps explaining the stunning remake of the Mayfield gem that Karl Denson throws down on "The Bridge").

Happy Friends goes on for too long without ever getting exactly where you want it to, but for the most part the rest of the tracks perk along nicely, punctuated by cool solos, classic riffs and snippets, and underpinned by a solid rhythm section.

There is plenty of energy and talent here, but sometimes the jamming and stretching get too thin for the material.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Karl Denson fans-.......2002-11-08

I recently went to a Karl Denson's Tiny Universe show at the Alabama Theatre, which in my opinion is one the most elegant venues in the South East. It was the best concert I have ever been to. Even if the Derek Trucks Band, one of my favorites, hadn't played at all, it still would have been at the top of my list. For those of you who do not know, Karl played the saxaphone and flute in Greyboy Allstars. I did not expect the concert to be half as good as it was, mostly because Karls Studio albums, which i have, aren't half as good as the show. Don't get me wrong, the studio albums are amazing, but seeing Karl Denson live is like having a religious experience. After the show I had a hard time listening to his studio work. Although his recent release The Bridge hints at what the show is like, it doesn't quite cut it. That's when my friend turned me on to the Greyboy Allstars. This is as close as it gets to a Karl Denson show (since he hasn't produced a live album). This CD is still a small step down from seeing them live, but it is as good as a CD could possibly get.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad track to be found........2002-07-11

If you like the Allstars, you'll love em live. Less produced and more engergy. If you like Grant Green, Funk, Galactic, etc. you will love these guys.

2 out of 5 stars Greyboy????.......2002-01-11

Listening to this album puzzled me. I went into it ...backwards, I liked Greyboy's later stuff, so I figured I'd check out this band. I was disappointed. This is really groovy and the musicians aren't bad, but it's like one of those Jam band things. I don't mind jam bands, but their sound is too loosely wrought for me. And there is a little too much noodling with instruments that seems a little aimless. If you like the Greyboy Allstars, you will probably like this. But if you are buying this for Greyboy, don't.

Recent success as a songwriter allows Bruce Robison to record on his own terms, as this self-produced, self-released collection attests. Rather than striving for radio hits, the writer responsible for Tim McGraw's smash "Angry All the Time" showcases his plainspoken, subtle, and droll songcraft with a minimum of production trickery. He collaborates with wife Kelly Willis on "Friendless Marriage," which sounds like a George-and-Tammy update, while other writing partners include Allison Moorer and the Dixie Chicks' Martie Seidel. Gary Allan has already covered the album's standout anthem, "What Would Willie Do," a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the messiah of progressive country, while Bruce's brother Charlie previously recorded the album-closing "Tonight." For other artists searching for quality material that transcends formula, the balladry of "Blame It on Me" has hit potential, though "Valentine," one of the best songs here, sounds so personal it's hard to imagine anyone singing it better than the reedy-voiced Robison. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yet another masterpiece from a master singer/songwriter........2002-11-18

Here is the power of Bruce Robison: He can take eleven songs, all low-key, most rather mournful, and turn it into a brilliant work of art. If any other artist had recorded a CD like this, they would be criticized, downsized, and shut out. But Bruce Robison, by some twist of fate, was born with a talent for tellign stories, and a voice to tell them with.

"Country Sunshine" is full of personal, intimate ballads. "Can't Get There From Here," "Blame It On Me," and "Anyone But Me" tell the stories of men who know their love life is ruined, and who accept the fact. On the flip side, the heartwrenching "First Thing About Mary" shows us a man who is grasping at straws, not sure whether or not to believe his beloved is returning.

"Friendless Marriage" features wife Kelly Willis, whose voice blends well with Robison's in this tale of a couple stayign together out of habit. "Devil May Care" and "What Would Willie Do" (and there's only one Willie, people) are the only two songs on here that offer something obpimistic...and they are the only two that don't deal with love. "Valentine," "Sixteen," and "Tonight" offer glimpses at loves past, compared to loves present, and are given with a remorsful and personal air (for example, Valentine mentions "Did you hear about big brother/He's the next big thing," a possible reference to big-brother Charlie?). Even "Bed of Ashes," a flat-out, traditional heartbreaker, captured my immediate attention.

There is no doubt that Bruce Robison is the best singer/songwriter working today. His albums may not be best-sellers...but then, if you look at what DOES sell, and compare it to what DOESN'T, you will see that sometimes the best albums are those that the public doesn't readily eat up. This is one of them. If you want radio friendly, airy, all heads-in-the-clouds-balloony songs, go somewhere else. If you want honest, real music, music that speaks to the heart, the soul, and every other part of your body, then buy Bruce Robison's "Country Sunshine."

4 out of 5 stars Low-key return to songwriterýs indie roots has subtle charm.......2001-09-24

Having been one of the first to sign to Sony's Lucky Dog imprint, Robison now becomes the first to voluntarily return to indie releases. While his brother (Charlie) and others (Jack Ingram, BR549) contemplate Lucky Dog's gentle nudge towards a more commercially viable presentation, Robison's taken his leave to concentrate on songwriting and to follow a musical muse who's unfettered by starmaking machinations. The success with which his songs have been recorded by the likes of Lee Ann Womack ("Lonely Too") and Tim McGraw ("Angry All the Time"), has afforded him the freedom and direction.

His latest collection of tunes continues the thoughtful, songwriterly work of his three previous LPs. The production, however, takes an even more decided turn to a homegrown, understated sound that gently underlines Robison's vocals. It's not as whispery as Bill Anderson, but it has the same quiet strength that causes a listener to lean in. Drummer Kenny Malone provides the same sort of easy groove he laid down for Don Gibson and others.

Standout titles include a new duet with Kelly Willis, "Friendless Marriage" (sure to be appearing on a Tim McGraw or Faith Hill album near you), and the tongue-not-completely-in-cheek tribute to Willie Nelson, "What Would Willie Do." "Bed of Ashes" (co-written with Sean Michaels) sets tight, traditional harmony singing against fiddle, steel, and Ian McLagan's Hammond organ. Co-writes with Allison Moore and Marty Siedel further complement Robison's solo works.

Like Robison's earlier albums, this one has a few standout performances, and a host of songs waiting to be magnified by others. The high quality of Robison's songwriting can outstrip his understated, highly-personal presentations. But with such potent songs, the songwriter's subtle singing charms are a good place to begin one's appreciation of his words.

5 out of 5 stars This a rare gem - An absolute pleasure for the jazz lover.......2000-08-27

Discovering this album was like finding a beautiful old novel in a 2nd-hand bookshop - a rare gem that you certainly won't let go of once you've found it.

Some of the jazz greats - Hazell Scott, Charles Mingus and Max Roach - combine to give us an album of relaxed, satisfying jazz standards you can sit down with a scotch and a good book to listen to and enjoy.

Sadly much of Hazel Scott's works seems to have been left behind in the transition from LPs to CDs. Finding any of her albums on CD is hard - this taste of a great jazz pianist at work is one of the few available.

If you've enjoyed listening to Buena Vista Social Club of Dave Brubeck's Take Five, you are certain to find this a very satisfying album.

Album Description

From the time of Pythagoras, about 2600 years ago, music has been played on glass in various ways. In 1761, Benjamin Franklin invented the `glass armonica', which works on the same principle as running your finger around the rim of a wine glass. On Songs from Earth, William Wilde Zeitler has used the glass armonica's haunting, ethereal sound to create a moving collection of peaceful songs for yoga, massage or relaxation. Accompanied by harp, wine glass chorus, and other instruments, this music has a melodic spaciousness that is balm for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars New life for an old instrument........2007-05-17

The instrument that is central to this CD was first invented by Benjamin Franklin. It's a series of graduating glass bowls connected in the center by a rod of some kind. The whole thing turns and the edge of the bowls are played by hand. At least, that is what I understand of the instrument and it's history. Reagardless of whether you understand the mechanics of the device or not, the music is wonderfully restful, enjoyable and tranquil. I use it for my yoga sessions. I'm really pleased the insturment has been found is being played again.

What wonderful melodies. Ethereal really. I am a teacher of primary students. They enjoy these sounds because of the calmly and thoughtful feelings they exude. I am a Christian and stay away from mystic items. I don't consider this music or style a mystic/dark genre. It is truly heavenly and peaceful. So welcome in this world. I have several of William Zeitler's music and other armonica artists. Being a lover of history, it was a wonderful discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Music from the Astral World!.......2005-07-21

I love this CD! It has bcome one of my favorites! Haunting melodies that stay with you for days....although the title is Songs from Earth, I feel a more appropriate description is music from the astral world. Wlm Zeitler has done a superb job with this CD!

5 out of 5 stars relaxing and beautiful music.......2004-10-25

My daughter (then 8 years old) bought this CD from Mr. Zeitler at a New Age fair. She wanted something to listen to at bedtime, partly to "sing her to sleep" and partly to block out sounds from the rest of the house. We both fell in love with this CD - I wish Amazon had samples to listen to - the glass armonica has a hauntingly unique, sweet, almost echoing sound. Imagine the music of the harp played on wine glasses (rubbing a wet finger around the rim.) The songs on the CD were composed specifically for the instrument, and would fit into any meditation or new age music collection. My daughter is now searching for similar CDs and of all the New Age offerings I have her listen to she says, "I want something quieter and calmer like the 'glass' CD." It's beautiful music. We highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Roby Duke is amazing!.......2006-11-13

Roby Duke has been making records since the late seventies and each record has its own feel. I recently attended the Chris Tomlin concert at Overlake Church in Redmond WA and was treated to the unique musical stylings of Roby Duke. Through out his career he has done a little bit of everything. From solo jazz recordings to vocal soundscapes for major movies like Ray, Crash, Titanic and more. However, this is his only record dedicated to the Lord. Relaxed Fits is a collection of songs that were either written as gifts for his record executive friends and their wives or as blessings to some of his worship leader buddies. His best yet!
