Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Thank God someone thought to record the Godfather in concert at this vital stage of his career--and at the ultimate shrine of black American music, to boot. There is no more exciting document of live performance in the history of R&B: powered by tireless drummer Clayton Fillyau, James Brown and the Famous Flames tear their way through a slew of King hits--from "Please, Please, Please" to "Night Train"--taking soul power to the very edge of gospel abandon in the process. The Apollo audience, hysterical with adulation, plays as big a part in Live at the Apollo as Brown himself. The shrieking buildup and sudden drop down into "Lost Someone" is one of the most heart-stopping moments in soul. --Barney Hoskyns

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Dynamite goes to Harlem.......2007-07-25

With the passing of James Brown at the end of 2006, the lost one of its most its most powerful musical fores, a sweat-soaked juggernaut of white-hot passion and burning soul. For proof of that, consult this very album. Recorded late in 1962, when Brown was still a relative lightweight (commercially speaking), Live at the Apollo is a sizzling slice of raw soul, collection of breathless R&B stompers and heart-shredding ballads that put the Godfather on the musical map long before he got around to inventing funk.

The album captures Brown hooting, hollering, crooning, screaming, and tearing his way thorugh a setlist that hits the highlighs of his early career. He attacks the songs with a seemingly endless supply of energy and ferocity- At one point, he sings a medley of something like nine songs in just over six minutes! It's somewhat hard to believe that his band could even keep up with him, but- okay, actually it's not. They're awesome- their raw, slashing guitars, smooth horns, and tight backing vocals drive Brown on, pushing him to new heights of fantabulousness with every passing note. Combine that with the sounds of a rapt audience (James Brown always got the best audiences), and you've got a platter of can't-fail musical explosiveness. The afformentioned medley is only one of the deliciously crazy tracks here: there's also "Night Train," in whih Brown manages to sound absolutely electric, even though he's doing nothing but listing the names of cities. "I'll Go Crazy" and "I Don't Mind" comes ripping out of the gates with gutteral guitars and dizzying vocal acrobatis, while "Think" sees the star of the show making chop suey out of the English language. Delicious, delicious chop suey. And when Brown slows things down, it's only to rip your heart out with a ballad- "Try Me" is instant gratification, and the epic version of "Lost Someone" (over ten minutes) is simply gorgeous, a soul-shreddingly cathartic bit of group therapy (again, listen to that audience!) disgued as a song.

So......... get it! Play it! Live the 'xperience!

4 out of 5 stars Black Music Treasure.......2007-07-11

This album is a must have for any R&B music catalog. Black music has been forever changed by the performances and performer on this album in 1962.

During the racially chargered violence of the 60's this performance was an escape from the absolute madness of society, giving the concert goers a night of unbelievalbe entertainment from an unbelievably great performer.

Many artist such as Prince and Michael Jackson were not even born yet, when this concert took place, yet thier careers have flourish behind the influence of James Brown electricfying and near breath taking performances.

The album doesnt get 5 stars because I thought the album's performances were redundant. James performs some of the same songs 3 times in the show. The concert is rather short, less than 1 hour. I'm assuming when you do 300 dates a year you can't afford to have 3 hour concerts.

Great album that will forever stand the test of time. Album of musical history that should be a blue print as to how the 21st centuries artist should create and/or put on live shows.

Look toward Prince and Michael Jackson who emulate James Brown... these two artist from James have influences a life time of music to come.

5 out of 5 stars NOT FUNK... BUT STILL CRRRRAAAAAZZZZZY.......2007-02-07

For a lot of reasons this album is pretty much what made James Brown not just an icon of his day.. but for many days to come... and these reasons have to do with politics, as well as music so I'll stay away from them,.. however James Brown is certainly a name that willl never be forgotten at Harlems Apollo Theater.
This album was recorded live in 1962, when James Brown was still exclusively The Soul Brother no.1. He hadn't started developing his funk yet, however had already been tearing up the charts for sometime (mid fifties?) and was rapidly building a reputation as an amazing live performer. In order to prove that it wasn't just hype, Brown recorded this show at The Apollo (an excellent way to nationalize their name in the process, I'd have to say) and released it about a year later.
It's true that James Brown had a solid run of hit singles on the radio for over ten years.. but to hear that stuff in comparison to his live recordings always pales. No matter what era of James Brown you listen to.. the hit singles just ain't half as exciting as a complete live show.. and this proves it. I'LL GO CRAZY is amazing, one of the all time best performances of a song, ever.. and from here we go into a non stop frenzy, which, if you are seasoned to James Brown, may sound a little out dated, but no doubt as wild as his squeeeezieest funk juices. In typical James Brown fashion the songs just keep coming,..no breaks, constant motion. The crowd gets involved too, screaming and clawin'.... songs meld into other songs, then back into the original songs, and then into medleys, that meld with other medleys.. and then finally it all finishes back at the start with I'll GO CRAZY, as if you never left it to begin with. The way James Brown put on a show in 1962 would eventually become the influence for not only any good soul show, but rock, jazz, funk, dance, etc.... they all wanted his chops... and that is mainly because of what is contained on this record.... Enter the Hardest working man in showbiz....

5 out of 5 stars The greatest showman who ever lived..........2007-01-12

If you want to sample James Brown's music, start here. Then, maybe pick up his '20 Greatest Hits'. He was a man of amazing, incomparable talent. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert about six times from 1964 to 1969. You would have to see him live to appreciate it when you hear that he was the greatest showman who ever lived. To see him and hear him live is to love him. This may sound like an exaggeration, but all who have seen him live know what I am talking about.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS ONE LIVE ALBUM I'LL GIVE A SECOND LISTEN TO.......2006-12-29

now i am not keen on live albums because then i'll become too much of a skeptic. however, this album is an exception. first of all, IT'S JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMES BROWN.........BROWN..............BROWN!!!! secondly, that one elongated song that i cannot think of.................just listening to those ladies scream and moan...............MY GOODNESS!!!!! that song alone is enough proof for me that mr. brown was comatose when it came to the stage!!!! don't think so............ask michael jackson, usher, justin timberlake, janet jackson, and plenty, plenty others. if you recorded it, then out on the BET awards that year when they were honoring james and michael came out and surprised him. this is just a sample though, remember that.

Thanks to the paradigm-shifting success of his first Live at the Apollo LP from 1963, James Brown and the famed Harlem theater were all but synonymous in the '60s. By the time Brown recorded there again in early summer of 1967, his music had undergone tremendous changes, as revolutionary for R&B as John Coltrane's sheets-of-sound approach was for jazz. This second Live at the Apollo caught Brown giving full stick to both his classic soul-ballad style and the funk his band was developing practically in front of the crowds' ears. Even better than previous issues is this terrifically remastered version. It adds nearly 25 minutes of previously edited tape, most significantly the pivotal "Let Yourself Go"/"There Was a Time"/"I Feel All Right" funk workout and an "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" that extends to a third of an hour here. The revisions add to the you-are-there feel of one of Brown's must-own albums, as do photos and credits that acknowledge everyone from stellar players like Maceo Parker and Clyde Stubblefield to the troupe's hairdresser and Learjet pilot. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2006-11-06

One of the main reasons I purchased this CD was because of the song "Money Won't Change You." This song is listed as #2 on Disc Two and it is not there! I checked all of the songs on this 2 Disc CD and "Money Won't Change You" is no where to be found. I would appreciate some feedback and an exchange on this CD as it is not what I expected nor paid my hard earned money for.

5 out of 5 stars JAMES and the FLAMES.....PURE DYNAMITE !!.......2006-10-13

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER RECORDED...dynamic and powerful...It was surpassed only by LIVE AT THE APOLLO, VOLUME ONE That is quite an accomplishment for any group ..yes- but for an R&B group...unprecedented ! And yes, JAMES BROWN AND THE FAMOUS FLAMES are,or at least WERE..a VOCAL GROUP ! There's been a great deal of CONTROVERSY and CONFUSION over the last 40 years as to just who the FAMOUS FLAMES were. Were they a BAND?...or were they a VOCAL GROUP ? Many writers and music historians still DONT KNOW .. To this day they still mistakenly write in article after article that the FLAMES were a BAND..that FRED WESLEY, MACEO PARKER , SINCLAIR PINKNEY..AND OTHER BAND MEMBERS were the FAMOUS FLAMES...WRONG!! IT'S TIME TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT RIGHT NOW ...The FAMOUS FLAMES were originally a combination vocal/instrumental group from Georgia fronted by singer /musician BOBBY BYRD...who actually was the man who discovered JAMES BROWN..while he was still in a Georgia Juvenile Detention Facility..BOBBY's family sponsored his release and James and his FORMER cellmate/friend JOHNNY TERRY joined Bobby's group..this was the group,(the original FLAMES), that originally recorded PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE and several other songs over a two year period in the mid '50's..but that group broke up...around '58 James RE-FORMED THE FLAMES ..this time as a straight VOCAL GROUP ....BACKED by the old JC DAVIS outfit...which became the first incarnation of what would become the JAMES BROWN BAND...But the FLAMES were always a SEPARATE ENTITY from the band ...THEY WERE A SINGING GROUP.After several members came and went over a period of 2-3 years,Original members BOBBY BYRD and JOHNNY TERRY rejoined the group...and new members BOBBY BENNETT and the late LLOYD STALLWORTH were added..TERRY (who was the co writer of PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE along with JAMES} eventually left the group ...and the remaining members- BYRD, STALLWORTH, AND BENNETT became the best known and remembered FAMOUS FLAMES lineup...this is the group on this album and that was featured in two Hollywood motion pictures: SKI PARTY (part of the famed "BEACH PARTY" series of movies featuring FRANKIE AVALON}and the 1964 concert film "THE TAMI SHOW " where they and JAMES stole the show from THE ROLLING STONES ,THE SUPREMES , and everyone else.THE FLAMES also appeared with James on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW TWICE ,dressed differently than the band, and ,sadly, uncredited.JAMES has made it clear in his autobiography and even on the DAVID LETTERMAN show that "the FAMOUS FLAMES are not a band - they're a SINGING GROUP " ...yet many writers and music historians still DONT GET THE MESSAGE.This confusion has persisted to this day... and has cost the FLAMES a possible spot in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME along with JAMES.,which they so richly deserve. THE FAMOUS FLAMES are one of the great UNSUNG GROUPS in rock & r&b history .Though they sang with JAMES on such big million selling hits as PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, TRY ME,I'LL GO CRAZY, OH BABY,DON'T YOU WEEP, THINK, BEWILDERED,and others, Their faces never graced a single album cover, and most fans today don't remember that they even existed !! Everyone today only talks about JAMES AND THE BAND. They deserved much better.THE FLAMES were a POWERFUL SINGING GROUP, WITH TIGHT HARMONIES , AND DANCE STEPS THAT WOULD PUT EVEN THE HIGHLY TOUTED TEMPTATIONS TO SHAME !! DON'T BELIEVE IT ? ASK ANYONE WHO'S SEEN THEM WITH JAMES AT THE APOLLO !! In 1964, THE FLAMES stopped recording with JAMES in the studio...but they continued performing on stage with him for another 4-5 years... and their name still appeared on the records ,so most thought people thought the name applied to the band. Although THE FLAMES played an important ,CO STARRING ROLE with JAMES on the the 1st two live albums , LIVE AT THE APOLLO (VOL 1 ) AND PURE DYNAMITE:LIVE AT THE ROYAL, by the time this album appeared ,they were relegated to THIRD BANANA STATUS behind JAMES and the band.On the original album release , KING RECORDS even went so far as to cut their name from the show's original introduction !! At least now , on the EXPANDED CD RELEASE, THE FAMOUS FLAMES' name has been rightfully restored to it's proper place. Hopefully ,one day, THE FLAMES THEMSELVES, BOBBY BYRD, BOBBY BENNETT, LLOYD STALLWORTH, AND JOHNNY TERRY, will be restored to THEIR rightful place in music history.

3 out of 5 stars Should have left well-enough alone.......2005-10-13

Get the original version of this album, rather than the remastered version. The first is tight and powerful; the second adds a bloated, interminable version of "It's a Man's Man's World" and some tepid instrumentals for his back-up dancers. If you buy the remastered version, you'll be hitting the skip button more often than you should on a live James Brown album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-04-20

If you were to get one live album in your life, make it this one. It just blows volume I out of the water.

Highlights include "It's a Man's World", "Sweet Soul Music", "Kansas City", "Let Yourself Go", "Bring It Up", "I Feel All Right", "Cold Sweat", "Prisoner of Love" (except the orchestra and the backup vocals), and the Best Song Ever, "There Was a Time".

However, there are a couple overly-orchestrated tunes, such as "I Wanna Be Around". Don't ask me why. But you should still just get the album. Every song is at least listenable, and there are many gems.

4 out of 5 stars A Funk Is Born.......2005-01-16

James Brown has made four albums at Harlem's Apollo, the first in 1963 introducing the James Brown Show to a whole new audience and staying in the top selling lists for well over a year. By the time of this second album, selected mainly from the second of two shows recorded during a record-breaking 10-day run in June 1967, he had played there a further 200 times and claimed to know the stage so well he would recognize it blindfold from the sound of the fans in the balcony.
The concerts caught the James Brown Band at an important transitional phase. The previous month Pee Wee Ellis had taken as over musical director and with Maceo Parker recently restored to the line-up on tenor sax the music had taken a new, more funky direction (at a time when funk didn't exist), as demonstrated on the first groundbreaking piece they had recorded together that same month, Cold Sweat. James Brown did not waste the opportunity to bring his audience up to date with his sound, performing new titles such as Cold Sweat and Let Yourself Go, the current single.
However, less than two minutes into the latter song the Band go into an extended locked groove jam called There Was A Time, with both Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks whacking out the tempo on twin drum kits, plus bongos by Ronald Selicoe, and this soon developed a life of its own when an edit of the performance appeared as the B-side of the next single, I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me). It did better in the R&B charts than the A-side, reaching number 3, and boosted sales of this legendary live album. The liner notes claim that this track "may well be the single most riveting Brown performance on record."
However, James Brown was off to Las Vegas the following month and also had an eye for the mainstream, so as well there are violin-filled renditions of standards like That's Life and I Wanna Be Around, which owes as much to Tony Bennett as it does to Dinah Washington.
This two CD set reconstructs the original set-list as far as is possible, restoring material edited from the original 1968 double-album because of running-time constraints, including in their entirety Sweet Soul Music from Bobby Byrd's set and the James Brown Band's revival of Duke Ellington's Caravan, and edits removed from longer pieces such as It's A Man's Man's Man's World, There Was A Time, I Feel All Right and Cold Sweat, with its Maceo Parker sax solos, all taken from the four-track remote recording master tape

3 out of 5 stars 24 year wait for "Volume 4"........2000-03-11

I've memorized every note from the first three editions from 125th Street, and can only say that a few parts of the 1995 edition exceed parts of the earlier entries in the series, i.e. an outstanding '95 "Make It Funky" with the Reverend Al Sharpton; a strong biographical ballad "Georgia-Lina"; and two unfortunately abbreviated takes of "Hot Pants" and "The Payback". The remainder are mostly disco-fied versions of "greatest hits". It seems that a great chance was lost to show 'em where the samples really come from.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the previous three "LIVE AT THE APOLLO" albums first.......1999-11-01

With all the other JB product out there, I don't know why anyone would buy this if they didn't already own all of the man's classic albums first. That said, this 'greatest hits' live package proves that even in the '90s, James Brown is very much capable of bringing down the house. His voice these days is a rather pale reminder of the nearly supernatural capabilities he once possessed. But, as anyone who has seen him live recently can testify, his touring band is a force of nature and that is why this album is ultimately worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars James Brown Get's Down At The Apollo.......1999-06-02

This album is one of my five favorites of all time. Brown's performance here gives every indication of his claim to fame of being "The Hardest Workin' Man In Show Business." One song I didn't like of James Brown's until now was "Get Up Offa That Thing" until I heard it on this album. Short versions of "Hot Pants" "The Payback" and "Prisoner Of Love" offer glimpses of James' unique style....even in a brief song he can make the feet move and the body groove. I found myself dancin' to these. "Georgia On My Mind" as James does it on this album serves up a peachy fuck with an kind of tear-jerking emotion that would make any New Yorker long for hamhocks and collards. Rev Al Sharpton's appearance on the album is priceless. Even the Revy is dancin' heavy according to him...at this show. All in all-this is one of James Brown's many masterpieces.

The newest James Brown fans, who possibly have not seen his live clips from the '60s, or have heard some of his best live recordings, are in for a shock - this is one bonafied smoker from Cut One To Twelve! Although there are some issues, namely that Cut Four, "Escapism"/"Make It Funky", (containing elements found in a future full-length version of the studio track), according to the excellent written notes by Harry Weinger, was actually a show opener; that the guitars and bass have little aural impact; and that in too many spots the soulful concedes to the sexual, "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", "Super Bad", "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" and others make up for any technical or artistic shortcomings as they throw off alot more heat than just the July, '71 sun. It's an explosion of sound, of passion, every note carrying the message: baby, you'll never be the same after digging this.
This session, Volume Three in a series, begs for the same "Deluxe" reissue treatment that Volume Two recieved. (Then maybe the most exciting album ever released, "James Brown - Live At The Garden", will follow in similiar fashion and give us a chance to actually *hear* his 1967 band!).

I have yet to hear the James Brown live recording that surpasses "Love, Power, Peace" for sheer energy, band chops, and raw funk, and I figured that this album would at least give it a run for it's money, but I was disappointed with the production.

Don't mistake this for a reason NOT to buy this album; if you check out the medley of 'Escape-ism/Make it Funky' (which contains one of the best onstage raps/grooves JB ever put out) and the intense 'Bewildered', it makes it worth picking up. But I've got to pop the subwoofer up a notch to hear the basslines as they should be heard.

Whether it was a soundboard recording or not matters little... I love James Brown, but his bands were generally as good as he was, and they deserve to be heard on equal footing, and they're too low in the mix on this album.

Still, the versions of the aforementioned tunes, along with a slinky 'Sex Machine', 'It's a New Day', and 'Soul Power' make this a great addition/addiction to your funk/soul collection.

In showing a picture of the JB troupe on stage back in the sixties..it clearly stated that JAMES was..."with the Famous Flames AND the James Brown Band!!Why the confusion? Part of the reason centered around a very strange practice of KING RECORDS (JAMES'record label back then) of showing ONLY THE LEAD SINGER on many of their vocal groups' classic fifties and sixties albums. They did this- not only with JAMES BROWN AND THE FLAMES'albums...but with HANK BALLARD AND THE MIDNIGHTERS'albums as well. People only know what they see...And what they saw was only JAMES BROWN'S AND HANK BALLARD'S faces on the album covers...but not their respective groups.Another problem is the unfortunate practice on the part of music writers over the last 15 years or so of calling the great r&b vocal groups "bands" because their rock- oriented counterparts were. (example..artists such as THE MIRACLES,THE TEMPTATIONS,AND THE FOUR TOPS ARE NOT "BANDS",BUT RATHER VOCAL GROUPS OR SINGING GROUPS...While artists such as THE BEATLES , THE ROLLING STONES,AND THE BEACH BOYS are bands..They actually play instruments on stage). These two factors have combined to cause a confusion toward THE FAMOUS FLAMES in the eyes of the music buying public that has persisted to this day... and has cost them a possible spot in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME along with JAMES,which they so richly deserve.(ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN THE MOTION PICTURE "THE TAMI SHOW" will have to admit-JAMES BROWN AND THE FAMOUS FLAMES STOLE THE SHOW - BLOWING AWAY THE STONES , THE SUPREMES , AND EVERYONE ELSE}.the FLAMES also appeared with James in the Frankie Avalon movie "SKI PARTY" in a non- singing, non-speaking role, and on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW twice, dressed differently than the band, and unfortunately uncredited .THE FAMOUS FLAMES are one of the great UNSUNG GROUPS of rock and R&B history. In 1964,James stopped recording with the FLAMES in the studio,But they still continued to perform with him on stage for another 4-5 years...and their name still appeared on the records,so most people thought the name applied to the band. After the FLAMES disbanded , BOBBY BYRD remained with James, and that's his voice you hear echoing James on hits such as "SEX MACHINE","SOUL POWER","MAKE IY FUNKY",AND "GET ON UP, GET INTO IT,GET INVOLVED" . So,the next time you listen to "live at the apollo", or early hits such as PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE , TRY ME,THINK, BEWILDERED,OH BABY DONT YOU WEEP,or other great songs... remember..the guys you hear SINGING ...NOT PLAYING INSTRUMENTS in the background...are indeed the mighty FAMOUS FLAMES..BOBBY BYRD, BOBBY BENNETT,JOHNNY TERRY, AND LLOYD STALLWORTH. read JAMES'AUTOBIOGRAPHY...IT'S ALL THERE..THE FAMOUS FLAMES ARE A SINGING GROUP.. NOT A BAND!!

1962 'Absolutely' LIVE At The Apollo, I'd consider the LP and CD as about the BEST by James Brown And The Famous Flames.
Since 'Stereo' was still under development for Rock and Soul in the early 60's, the recording on CD 'SHOULD' be in the original mono. If you have a mixer, or mono capability, try mono. Live At The Apollo rates over '5', it's more near 20, very wild, very LIVE. Absolute MUST for any true music afficianado and collector. Mono for this CD. I've already submitted my mono request to the issuing recording label. Don't miss this title!

5 out of 5 stars "Don't Just Say 'Ow!', Say 'OWWWW!'.".......2004-01-28

October 24, 1962 is a date that will live in music infamy. For it was then at the midnight show at Harlem's famed Apollo Theater when James Brown recorded the album that fully introduced soul music to America and gave documented proof that he was indeed the greatest showman alive.

The story behind it is well known. Brown had a few R&B hits dating back to 1956, including the 1959 chart topper "Try Me", but was largely unheard of outside young black America and even with that success his singles career was maddeningly inconsistant in terms of sales and even musical direction. But in person it was a different story, for in front of an audience Brown tore it up night after night on the chitlin' circuit, an act no rival wanted to try and follow. It is safe to assume that anyone who saw his show live was instantly a fan for life.

Therefore what he wanted was to record a concert, much like Ray Charles had done at Newport a few years before, that would show people who hadn't yet bought a ticket just what they'd been missing. King Records chief Syd Nathan rejected it flatly, saying - and not without some merit - that albums did not sell well to the generally lower economic strata of R&B fans, and without even a single to garner from it the venture would be foolhardy at best. Naturally Brown ignored this dictive and paid for the recording himself, and thus with his own ego, reputation and perhaps career on the line gave the single greatest performance ever caught on tape. Nathan had no choice but to put it out.

Sales built slowly, spurred on by enormous word of mouth publicity and frequent airings of the entire album on the tiny R&B outposts at the far ends of the AM dial, until it became the "must have" LP of 1963. Consider this: at the time albums were strictly the realm of pop singers. For the year in question only two other rock LP's (both by the Beach Boys) even entered the Top Ten on the album charts, and before that only Elvis Presley among rockers had been able to sell LP's in sufficient quantities to make releasing them worthwhile. For Brown, who was still relatively unknown, singing in a style few Americans had ever heard of or thought possible, to crack that chart, spending a remarkable 66 weeks there and reaching #2 at one point, becoming the 32nd highest selling album of any kind that year, was absolutely inconceivable. To put it bluntly, THIS is what put James Brown on the map and let the world know that soul music, introduced in the early-50's by the "5" Royales, Dominoes and others, honed by Ray Charles in the mid-50's and polished for the masses by Sam Cooke in the late-50's, had a bold new leader. James Brown forever after was Soul Brother Number One.

If you've never heard it you're surely not ready for what awaits you, but that doesn't mean you should avoid it, just don't expect anything specific, for you'll have no reference points to compare it to because it truly is like nothing you've heard before. Frenetic to the point of lunacy, with an almost religious type fervor in the way he puts over the songs in shortened medley-esque fashion, never pausing for a breath, the tight band turning on the dime, high point after high point reached and then broken once again, all culminating in the extended gospel-like reading of the epic ballad "Lost Someone". It is during that performance where he fully hypnotizes the audience and the listener with a repeated desperate plea, as all the suffering, passion and ecstasy of soul music is delivered with a raw, almost naked, grab for their approval. His quavering voice fading with despair into the shadows, as the tension in the crowd rises to unbearable levels, he drains every ounce of emotion he can muster from himself, the song and the masses before suddenly offering release by exploding into "Please, Please, Please" which detonates the crowd like a nuclear bomb before carrying us all home with the chugging farewell, "Night Train". It is truly a one of a kind experience, yet magically one that can be repeated over and over again.

It will almost surely take you many listens to comprehend what is happening. But give it time. Listen to it in the dark, going to bed night after night, imagining yourself in the crowd that cold Wednesday in '62, seeing the future of R&B music unfolding before your eyes. Before long you too will be rhythmically intoning along to Fats Gonder's famed opening, "And now ladies and gentlemen, it's star time... Are you ready for Star Time?!!"

      Are you?

      4 out of 5 stars This is OK-Vol. 2 is better.......2003-07-01

This CD is just okay. The early JB ballads are the thing here. Gives you a good idea of a good chitlin' circuit performance as typically done for Black audiecnes in those days with approrpiate audience response. The standouts here include the extended version of "Lost Someone" which leads into "Please Please Please." Even without being able to see the infamous cape routine, it's quite entertaining. But overall, Vol. 2 is better since that CD plays up the more uptempo stuff that put JB on the map.

5 out of 5 stars A small point to clarify in the above commentary..........2003-04-16

In answer to the gratitude that someone thought of recording James live during that seminal period of his recording career, it should be known that it was none other than James Brown himself, who put his own money on the line, rented out the Apollo theatre and the recording equipment and financed the entire deal on his own. He was ahead of his time musically and this artistic foresight extended to marketing as well. This album is a must-own for a little bit of insight as to what it might have been like to experience the James Brown band live as they were just hitting a groove that hasn't stopped so many decades later.

It's not that there's anything wrong with this 1990 recording: King's expressive guitar work and vibrant vocals rarely disappoint in a live setting, and this release here he has a top-notch big band behind him. In addition to U2's "When Love Comes to Town," King rolls through nine staples, including "Sweet Sixteen," "Thrill is Gone," and "Paying the Cost to Be the Boss." On the other hand, King has produced a number of absolutely riveting live albums, including Live at the Regal, Blues Is King, and Live in Cook County Jail. They remain high points of blues history, relegating this solid release to the second tier. --Marc Greilsamer

I saw B.B. King in concert last night, in Coto de Caza, CA, as a part of thier "Summer concert in the park" series. At 78 he plays guitar and sings in his prime! As a matter a fact his guitar playing is more on the jazz improvisational side, of the blues. His band was allowed plenty of space to stretch out. Anyhow this cd, is a great example of one of his live shows, and on this cd recorded in 91, he is also in prime form, though the band is strictly used a background prop, BB's highly appealing vocals and guitar solos are highlighted throughout this exellent live session. As jazz critic Scott Yanow has pointed out, King alsways has a way of making his old hits sound fresh everytime he revivrs them, and on this cd is no acception, he does a killer job on Sweet Sixteen and The thrill Is Gone. You can't go wrong with a live BB album, the only thing missing is his jump blues standby song "Caldonia", ah well this is still one of BB finest "recent" cd's. If you can't go see him live, this is the next best thing. I only wish somone had recorded last nights show at Coto. Oh well, pick this cd up!

4 out of 5 stars The Thrill Is Back.......2003-05-22

      B. B. KING: LIVE AT THE APOLLO combines classic and modern blues tracks with a live performance that is more than up to the legendary B. B. King's standard. It's a pity that there's only ten cuts on this album; the band is playing rather well, and it would have been nice to hear their interpretation of a few more songs. Still, for what it is, this album delivers.

If you decide to buy this album, then it will probably be the least surprising purchase you will ever make. B. B. King is as professional as they come, and you're guaranteed a great performance no matter what the occasion. The songs that he plays here are, of course, great blues standards mixed with one or two written either by or for him. The only variable in this album would be the backing musicians. But for this performance, King was backed by Gene Harris, on piano, and the rest of the Philip Morris Superband (insert your own social commentary on that name and sponsor here). They do not disappoint.

One of the highlights on this album is B. B. King's version of the classic, "The Thrill Is Gone". It's a slow and jazzy cover of this great number. The mind boggles at how many times he must have played this particular tune before, yet he manages to make it sound as though this is the first time, and that the words mean as much to him now as they did then. Other standouts include a swinging version of the song U2 wrote for King, "When Love Comes To Town", an upbeat "Paying The Costs To Be The Boss", and a soulful "Ain't Nobody's Bizness".

In fact, there simply isn't a poor track on this album. The sound recording is excellent, and the musicians are all having a terrific night. Any fan of the blues should have this CD in their collection.

Yeah, nothing compares to great B.B...

I LOVE the songs on this CD. Everything is as melodic and hearty as can be.
For me, the BEST I could get from a live CD (better than the one he recorded on that jail years before, much more pleasant).

      3 out of 5 stars B.B. swings!.......1999-04-13

Great swingin' blues from B. B. King and and eighteen-piece orchestra. Starts off with a swing version of the U2/B.B. King song "When Love Comes To Town." Other good cuts, The Thrill Is Gone, Payin' The Cost..., Ain't Nobody's Business. My only complaint is that it's over too soon! Itruns a standard 45 mintues, but every time I play it, it's like it's over before it should be!

      Good stuff, check it out.
