Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ULTIMATE 60'S DIVA & GIRL GROUP MARATHON!!!.......2004-09-21

The great musical sixties is the strongest period to put together a two-disc festival of DIVA & GIRL GROUP CLASSICS and this collection draws from the vast U.S & U.K pool of greats and does an outstanding job that is full of surprises both for its inclusions as well as for necessary ommissions due to the space limitations of a two-disc set! Patsy Cline's early 60's Willie Nelson classic "Crazy" is a hauntingly brilliant masterpiece, Brenda Lee's soulful strong voice has always been a treat to hear as well as Leslie Gore's party songs and passionate ballads while Connie Francis voice was always a magnificent stand-out with British equivalents Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Sandie Shaw, Kathy Kirby, Petula Clark and Helen Shapiro all well represented here. Motown Diva treats in this collection include the Mary Wells masterpiece "My Guy", Martha Reeves athem "Dancing In The Streets" and the rocking masterpiece "Nowhere To Run" along with Gladys Knight's early classic "Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me". "The Great Musical Sixties" is how this brilliant musical period is frequently described and this is largely because a great and distinctive voice was a requirement at that time and those great voices are what made all of these songs so strong and memorable and these real singers such as Gladys and Martha are among the many who still sound in their prime today! Motown's first big girl group The Marvelettes are featured here with the classic "When Your Young And In Love" which has been used in numerous Motion Pictures and Television Series as being representative of the romantic sunny love generation of the sixties! "He Was Really Sayin' Something" and "Needle In A Haystack" from the Velvelettes are great Motown rocking standouts and Diana Ross & The Supremes "Baby Love" and "Stop! In The Name Of Love" sound as awesome today as they did forty years ago!!! Another amazing "Girl Group" The Chiffons scored high with "He's So Fine" & "Sweet Talkin' Guy" and these ear candy delights sound great over and over again!!! Soulful Diva gems like "The Shoop Shoop Song" by Betty Everett and "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass still sound fiery and great today along with athems like Aretha Franklin's "Respect" which is another timeless classic from a great legend. Hot girl groups from Wall Of Sound classics like "Da Doo Ron Ron" to mega-hits like "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" along with "Chapel Of Love" define the sixties and will give hours of listening pleasure to all who love this great musical period that is unsurpassed!! Bad girls are fun and none were better than the Shangri-La's and soulful blues from Nina Simone doing a riveting "I Put A Spell On You" is completely stunning! Smooth master of sophisicated soul Dionne Warwick flowing through "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" makes this timeless classic still sound fresh and great today...Brazilian jazz hit the heights with the smooth and sultry "Girl From Ipanema" with its great blend of Astrud Gilberto with sax legend Stan Getz!! Sophisication hit high on the air waves in the sixties unlike today as the chance for anything great finding its way to the Top 40 is rare and not in the stiff programming formula. This treasure chest of great performances is guaranteed to give unlimited hours of wonderful listening pleasure!! Enjoy and highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Strongest collection of its type yet released.......2004-03-11

Brenda Lee was the star at the beginning of the sixties. She is represented here by Speak to me pretty, her biggest UK hit but never released as a single in the USA, and Sweet nothings. Also from the early sixties are tracks by the Chiffons, the Shangri-las, Helen Shapiro, the Angels, the Crystals, Connie Francis, the Shirelles, the Dixie cups and Lesley Gore. Among their classic songs are Leader of the pack, Will you love me tomorrow and It's my party. Patsy cline, singing Crazy, is the only country singer represented here. The surprise omission from the early sixties is Locomotion by Little Eva. During this period, some American songs were UK hits via covers by British singers. Examples of these to be heard on this collection include Lover please (Vernon girls, cover of Clyde McPhatter), Tell him (Billie Davis, cover of Exciters) and Bobby's girl (Susan Maughan, cover of Marcie Blaine). So, the early sixties are well represented but things got even better from around 1964.

From Motown came Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Marvelettes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Velvelettes and Mary Wells, all represented here and some by more than one track. Among their songs are Dancing in the street, Baby love and My guy. Aside from Motown, there are several other soul and R+B classics here, including tracks by Dionne Warwick, Betty Everett, Fontella Bass and Freda Payne (actually from 1970, but who's complaining?). Jamaican teenager Millie is represented by My boy Lollipop, which you either love or hate. I love it.

Dusty Springfield (three tracks), Petula Clark (Downtown), Lulu (Shout), Sandie Shaw (Always something there to remind me) and Marianne Faithfull (This little bird) are the big British names from the mid to late sixties that you can find here, although Cilla Black and Shirley Bassey are among those missing.

As ever with these compilations, there are plenty of famous songs but there are one or two rarities. I was particularly pleased to discover White horses, a top ten hit for Jacky that rarely gets released on compilations.

It is always possible to argue over song selection - even artist selection - on various artist compilations of any kind, but there is no doubt that this is by far the strongest all-female sixties compilation I've come across.
