Keepin Dah Funk Alive [Live]

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Rubber fans and funkateers can finally rest easy: for the first time in nearly two decades (since 1977, to be exact, when he appeared on the Casablanca release PARLIAMENT LIVE/P-FUNK EARTH TOUR), Bootsy Collins is coming to you live and direct, unbootlegged and undiluted by tape hiss and cheap vinyl. KEEPIN' DAH FUNK ALIVE 4-1995 is a specially-priced two CD-set recorded live in Japan, featuring Bootsy and his New Rubber Band, a gang of the original members of this legendary Parliafunkadelicment offshoot -- including keymaster of atmospherics Bernie Worrell -- and fattened up by the presence of some fresh and talented youngbloods.

Incredible as it may seem, in his many years on the road Bootsy has never before recorded an official live album release with the Rubber Band; no doubt the sheer energy and deeply funky transcendence of an all-the-way-live "rubber jam" inspired the right people to think about rectifying the situation. The impeccably mixed KEEPIN' DAH FUNK ALIVE is culled from the hottest moments of a recent stop in Tokyo and, alongside the incomparable Bootzilla on Space Bass and vocals, the CD features two key P-Funk alums: synth-sorcerer Bernie Worrell on keyboards and organ and vocalist/emcee Gary "Mudbone" Cooper on lead throat and verbal rap-ability. They are joined here by longtime Rubber Band mainstays Joel "Razor Sharp" Johnson (keyboards), Frankie "Kash" Waddy (drums and assorted thumps) and the Horny Horns' Rick Gardner (trumpet).

Opening with the flammable intro reminiscent of "J.R. (Just Right)" from Bootsy's 1994 release BLASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE and slamming into the classic "Ahh... the Name is Bootsy, Baby" (with its signature chant of "Bootsy!"), the Rubber Band explores the spectrum of both futuristic and finely fermented funk, including P-Funk classics like "One Nation Under A Groove" and "Flashlight" and the deliciously cheesy and spaced-out balladry of "I'd Rather Be With You" from the 1976 Bootsy debut STRETCHIN' OUT. The overall vibe is augmented by stellar performances from Worrell, who stretches out on his own creepily Funkadelicized synth solo, and newly acquired guitarist Gary "Dirty Mugg" James, who lays into "One Nation..." and the anthemic "Cosmic Slop" with a vengeance.

"We've got an art form here that we're trying to keep alive," Bootsy relates. "We love it and we love doing it, you know?" From the rhythm attack of "Psychoticbumpschool" to the gospel revival of "A Sacred Place (RIP)" dedicated to fallen P-Funk muthaplucker Eddie Hazel, Bootsy and friends infuse the music with a new sense of urgency, giving us 90 minutes of funk that is most definitely alive....and kicking.

5 out of 5 stars Live Funk Music At It's Best! .......2006-06-14

A couple of reviewers had some negative responses on the sound quality of the live music on this CD. I think these negative responses are overly exaggerated. I've heard worse live recordings and this isn't one of them and what did you expect anyways, the music was recorded live, this isn't a studio recorded CD! What I like about this CD is that Bootsy and his Rubber band incorporated a hard rock edge to their nasty funk sound with the wailing and screeching guitar sounds. Love to always hear Comic Slop live and love the tribute they paid to Eddie Hazel who was very underrated if you ask me. This CD smokes from beginning to end. Don't let the negative reviews fool you! They don't know what the funk they are talking about! Keep the Funk Alive! A true hardcore funkateer would love this CD!

3 out of 5 stars Great P-Funk show but not a good Bootsy show.......2000-03-17

If you are looking forward to hearing the 70's bass thumping of Bootsy Collins in this recording don't even think about buying it. The space bass we all have come to love can barely be heard and Bootsy seems not be the center of the action. Now if you want to hear some of the P-Funk hits live and get down to some P-Funk you should but this album. The album is a mixture of Bootsy songs and Parliament songs. The band includes Bernie worrell which is an added plus on Flashlight and One Nation Uner a Groove. If you are a die-hard P-Funk fan and know your funk buy this album, but if you are looking for some good Bootsy and the Space Bass, don't buy it, instead get Bootsy live in Louisville 78. That cd will not dissapoint at all.

5 out of 5 stars Feels like live.......1999-06-24

I really enjoyed this disk. I've had a hard time getting it out of my CD player since I dropped it in the pocket. It sounds like a live album and it does a great job of putting the listener in a concert that they never got to see. Flashlight is an absolute jam and The name is Bootsy sounds like a steam train pulling out of the station. It sets up the groove that pulls you through the rest of the album. If you don't know your funk then this album won't do anything for you. If however, you know the P-Funk universe then this will do you just fine.

1 out of 5 stars Could there be a worse CD out there?.......1999-06-20

This has to be the worst CD of all time. The recording is tinny and distant, the band cannot be heard for the crowd noise, and what can be heard of the band is atrocious and very amaturish. The quality of the horn section is foretold in the liner notes (the "on three days rehearsal horn section"). The band sounds like they have only been playing thier instruments for 3 days max! I have heard better bootleg recordings. Don't buy this one!!!!!!! You have been warned!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bootsy live yeah baby!.......2002-03-28

This was bootsy live in Japan a treat for all bootsyfans out there plus if you miss Bernie Worrell's wizardy you get him along with Mudbone and Frank waddy and a guitarist that took serious notes from Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Hazel. Not only do you get classic Rubber Band material but ya get Parliament-Funkadelic classics like Flashlight, p-funk, and one nation. This is a must have a pfunk party if there was ever one.
