Thanks Mr. Aldrich for your music.......2003-05-03

The sound is perfect (better than the news DDD). The cristal clear piano or Mr. Aldrich sounds like no other. At last a new CD (Magic Mood) with beautiful themes, recorded originaly in 60's by London/Decca. Congratulations for Vocalion for give us again this music. My LPs (of course I have that in the original LP made in England and the LP made in Colombia in those years) are good but the CD really let ear very good all the orchestra.
I live in Bogotá and try to get all the Phase 4 Stereo albums of Mr. Aldrich, Frack Chaksfield, Stanley Black, Ted Heath and Maurice Larcange

The very best is the music that Mr. Larcange recorded with London/Decca under the label Phase 4 Stereo. The music, the arragements, the orchestras, the accordion, all were SPECTACULAR!
For our delicious, Vocalion has reissue (at last! At Last! At last!) after 35 years, one of the 2 better LPs music of London Phase 4 Stereo: "Larcange plays Legrand" and "Larcange plays Aznavour".

They have too the music of Ronnie Aldrich ("Destination Love" and "Love", two beautiful LPs of the 70's in the best sound for two pianos!). Absolutely recomended! 5 stars again!

I own both the LPs which i bought during the 70's,the Aldrich pianos and the strings of the London Festival Orchestra really livens you up!really beautiful music to listen to the good old days!I am glad they have it on CDs.A good buy!

Not for beginners.......2007-07-04

If you're already a big Magic Sam Maghett fan and you're looking to expand your library, then this is an excellent selection - especially given the limited selection. It gives a feel for the early development of the Magic Sam sound that helped define the Chicago west side blues, along with Otis Rush and Buddy Guy, in the '50s and '60s. If you are only a casual fan of Magic Sam, then this album is probably not for you - it gets a little repetitive and the slight nuances are probably lost on you. Personally I have enjoyed this album, but it does get a little tedious at times and the fast forward button is required.

As a side note, notice the similarity between the melody on Magic Sam's 'Do the Camel Walk' and Freddie King's 'Hideaway'. I don't know the history of this (I wish I could've lived it), it is apparently confirmed in 'Voice of the Blues' by Jim O'Neil that Freddie stole the licks from Hound Dog Taylor. I don't know how 'Do the Camel Walk' gets into the mix, as they were laid down on wax at about the same time.

Not ready for prime time.......2006-06-08

A lot of this material is markedly inferior to his later recordings. Some of it sounds tentative. Many of the songs are in a key that doesn't work for the vocals. Strictly for completists.

If you're looking for a first Magic Sam album get "West Side Soul."

Recycling?! Yes, well, there is some really great, energetic blues and R&B here, and some sizzling guitar playing, but you also get the feeling that Magic Sam only knew two or three songs at this point in his career, and he keeps doing them over and over with slightly different lyrics.

"The Essential Magic Sam" is not a career-spanning compilation; it chronicles Sam Maghett's earliest recordings for the Cobra, Crash and Chief labels. This material has been repackaged several times, and it's hard to pick one over the other...the sound is quite good, annotation is, too.
Sam was only in his early twenties when these singles were recorded, and some of the songs show up many years later on the excellent LPs "West Side Soul" and "Black Magic". And while the gritty "Mr Charlie", the classic "All Your Love", the passionate "Every Night About This Time", and the swinging "Look Watcha Done" are certainly great songs, the Cobra, Chief and Crash singles lack some of the variation of Sam's later recordings. "Everything Gonna Be Alright", "My Love Is Your Love", "Love Me This Way", "All Night Long", and "Easy Baby" are simply carbon copies of the 1957 single "All Your Love", and this compilation would actually benefit from being cut down to perhaps fifteen songs.

Still, fans of Magic Sam will certainly want this one in their collection. Casual listeners should start with "West Side Soul", though.

Take a chance on this incredible score!.......2004-07-22

I'm glad I did, as it definitely now resides in my top ten favorite Broadway scores. It's an extremely variable score, from wildly comic to powerfully beautiful, and that may have affected the show's run, but it works great on your CD player.
Don't be afraid to change the order of the songs either. I start off with 2,3, then 1, etc. In fact, the only song I didn't end up liking on the entire CD was "Many Young Men From Now".
When I read a review by someone, I'm always curious about other shows they've liked, or didn't like, to see how similar (or dissimilar!) our tastes are. Some scores I've enjoyed include: House of Flowers, Grass Harp, Saratoga, Camelot, Purlie, Dear World, Mata Hari, The Life, Avenue Q and Wicked.
Some I didn't like include Bajour, Subways Are For Sleeping, The Seussical, St. Louie Woman, Applause, Urinetown, Greenwillow, Big River, Sweet Charity and The Golden Apple.

Failed Broadway musical revived 25 years later........1999-06-05

This is a true oddity. HER FIRST ROMAN with book, music and lyrics by Ervin Drake is a show with some promise. The rhyming in some of the lyrics is clever, the premise of adapting Shaw's CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA to the musical stage a beguiling one. But this is amateurish from beginning to end. Not able to make up its mind whether it is drama, comedy or low comedy, it is none of these. Uggams is woefully miscast but Kiley does a wonderful job as Caesar. There are only two songs of merit - MANY YOUNG MEN FROM NOW (which should be in every gay cabaret singer's repertoire) and the rollicking I FELL IN WITH EVIL COMPANIONS. The rest range from mediocre to downright boring. Amazing that the original cast members and the producers liked it well enough to mount a cast album 25 years after the closing. Valuable to Broadway composers/lyricists in showing how NOT to write a show. This would have been ideal material for Lerner and Loewe, but sadly not for Mr. Drake.

Smooth and sexy...an undiscovered gem!.......2004-12-08

Johnny Bristol possesed one of the most sexy voices in sould music of the 1970s. His understated delivery and smooth intonation puts him on a different level than his peers Isaac Hayes, Barry White or Marvin Gaye for that matter. This was his second album for MGM, after the smashing success of "Hang On In There Baby" the year before. While the cover might insinuate this is a "make out" album (which largely it is) it is also an album with autobiographical touches such as "Morgantown, North Carolina". The title track "Feeling the Magic" might be a soundtrack for a quiet evening in bed while "I'm Just a Loser" goes down smooth with a shot of rum. Johnny's impassioned vocals run the gamut here, which makes this an album a winner on many levels. If unfamiliar with Johnny Bristol, this would be an excellent place to start.
