About the Artist
You may have heard Paul before - he produced, played bass and sang on the first three Grant Lee Buffalo albums in the mid 90s. Michael Shrieve, Santana's drummer, also contributes to this classic recording. Other credits include production of the Velvet Goldmine Soundtrack, David Gray's "Sell, Sell, Sell", Madder Rose's "Tragic Magic" and Luna's "Days of our Nights". Altogether, Paul has production credits on more than 1 million albums sold. He has shared the stage with REM, The Smashing Pumpkins, Bowie, Pearl Jam and Thom Yorke. Real rock star stuff coming through.
Product Description
Two words. Paul Kimble.
The music ranges from the soul of Curtis Mayfield to the pop of the Beatles and early Bowie. With a dash of Prince. The falsetto on this guy is unreal.

The Pretenders Third Album Is Finally Remastered!.......2007-06-19
Released in 1983, The Pretenders third album included several new band members in Robbie McIntosh who replaced James Honeyman Scott (who died from a drug overdose) on lead guitar and Malcolm Foster who replaced Pete Farndon (who was fired because of personal and drug problems) on bass. While The Pretenders debut album (simply titled The Pretenders) will always be my personal favorite, "Learning To Crawl" is a close second (along with The Pretenders II album). The album produced the hits "Back On The Chain Gang", "Middle Of The Road", "Show Me", "2000 Miles", "Thin Line Bewtween Love And Hate" and "Fast Or Slow" ("The Law's The Law") (this bonus track was released as a single and was the b-side of "2000 Miles" and sung by drummer Martin Chambers). The album wasn't as punk influenced as their debut but was more pop rock and the band seemed more mature. This newly remastered edition of "Learning To Crawl" includes seven excellent bonus tracks which are a nice addition to an already superb album. The only downside is that the cd inside the cardboard mini album replica has no inner sleeve to prevent it from scuffing and scratching. It just slips into one of the two the cardboard sleeves and that's it. Why Warner Brothers Records couldn't have included a paper inner sleeve for the cd is beyond me. My disc was scuffed badly and I returned it to the place of purchase and got my money back. Warner Brothers Records (Rhino) really needs to improve it's quality control. Sound quality wise the remastering is excellent with increased bass and midrange and output level. Highly Recommended!
I've got a smile, for everyone I meet.......2007-06-16
Many will disagree with me, but for me this is THE Pretenders album. The songwriting, musicianship, and lyrics which showed so much raw talent in the first two Pretenders albums are overflowing here. On this album, black and white turns to color. This is their Rubber Soul, their Pet Sounds, their Parallel Lines. It's where the rubber meets the road. Whereas the first two albums have some (sorry) filler in the form of extended jams and obscure experiments, this is a self-contained unit that doesn't pander, always entertains, and never disappoints. Oh, and the remastered sound and packaging are great, too. This may be the single best ten dollars you spend all year.

The departure of bassist Pete Farndon, and the drug-related death of lead guitarist James Honeyman Scott in 1982, left Chrissie Hynde's Pretenders in disarray, but she and drummer Martin Chambers rallied to produce the stunning 1983 single, "Back on the Chain Gang" (dedicated to Scott), and over the course of the next year, cobbled together enough material for a new album, some of whose tracks included new members: guitarist Robbie McIntosh and bassist Malcolm Foster. Nontheless, the album held together due to Hynde's uniformly strong material, which ranged from the rocking, bluesy "Middle of the Road" to the near-protest tune "My City Was Gone," to the piercing "Time the Avenger." --Billy Altman

Ain't Pretending.......2007-05-20
This cd I got about a year ago. Mostly because I wasn't a Pretenders fan. This showed me how close minded I was. I have heard a few of the tracks growing up, but my mind would always say, " don't waste your money". Once I gave it a full attentitive listen, I knew that I was wrong. For a few months it was stuck in my cd player. I also own their first release. I enjoy that as much as Learning To Crawl. So, if you haven't gotten it yet, get it. Try it with your lover and a bottle of Red wine. You will not be dissappointed!
Tragedy doesn't detract from this terrific third album (please note this is NOT for the remastered edtion).......2007-01-29
When half your band dies it changes the way you write and view the world. True Pete Farndon had already been kicked out (he was doing heroin)but James Honeyman Scott's death came as a shock. This terrifically talented guitarist and songwriter left the world too soon. Every song here (with the exception of one)continues to see Hynde's songwriting develop. The album opens with the explosive "Middle of the Road" (with a great guitar hook that new guitarist Robbie MacIntosh introduced to the song. Hynde has later stated he probably deserved a songwriting credit as it improved the song)and the album almost never misses hitting all chords perfectly whether it be for "Thumbelina" or the melodic, sensual reading of the classic "Thin Line Between Love and Hate". The closer "2000 Miles" references a classic Otis Redding tune but stands on its own. It's a beautiful closer to a great album. McIntosh is a perfect fit for the band at this stage.
Hynde recorded "My City Was Gone" and "Back on the Chain Gang" (both of which were written BEFORE the death of Honeyman-Scott but the latter sounds like it was written after it and about their attempt to continue without him)with Rockpile's Billy Bremner (a guitarist that Honeyman-Scott admired) and Big Country's Tony Butler (and frequent bass player for Pete Townshend's early solo albums)filling in.
Honeyman-Scott had been trying to recruit guitarist Robbie MacIntosh (formerly of Manfred Mann's Earth Band and who went on to a critically acclaimed solo career and playing with Paul McCartney)for the band so it seems like a natural progression for him to be in The Pretenders. MacIntosh brought along friend Malcolm Foster on bass and The Pretenders were reborn. This is one of the band's best albums inspite of "Watching the Clothes" (every Pretenders album has one or two weak tracks but they still don't detract from the impact of the albums). The more straight forward, muscular style on display here (Honeyman-Scott's guitar playing is missed even though MacIntosh is a terrific guitar player. His style is quite a bit different)promised a renewed start for the band (although their subsquent albums didn't deliver on that promise until gutiarist and former Katydid founder Adam Seymour joined the band and became a permanent fixture of the line up).
I'm looking forward to the deluxe reissue of this album. Hopefully we'll get demos, outtakes and live tracks similar to the band's first two albums.
a winner.......2007-01-03
Where was I in '83 and how did I miss this when it first came out? I bought it after hearing one of the songs on an oldies station and reading some good things about it from various people. Guess what, they were right, an excellent cd.
Good, but not the same band. .......2006-04-12
The Pretenders never really recovered from the loss of bassist Pete Farndon and guitarist James Honeyman-Scott. Honeyman-Scott in particular was an original talent who was truly irreplaceable. Hynde and Chambers soldiered on with session musicians and still managed to put out a very good album with Learning to Crawl, but the sound is already becoing more "classic AOR", and the intensity, excitement and originality of the first two albums has clearly begun to dissipate. That said, I think this record has stood the test of time fairly well and is not as disappointing in retrospect as it seemed when it was originally released.
Solid.......2005-07-15
Considering the loss and tragedy within the band, this is a very strong, if not stunning release by the Pretenders and some of their best material!

Product Description
For their fourth release, Hungry Lucy beautifully demonstrates their passion for the craft of songwriting. Rather than spend months in production, this time around the duo present "Before We Stand ... We Crawl" as a collection of six raw, emotional songs. These basic arrangements use piano, acoustic guitar, strings, wind instruments and sparse drum parts to underpin Christa Belle's heart-felt lyrics and highly emotive vocals. Taking the "less is more" approach, the duo purposely left each song exposed with emotion at the surface, stripping away any pretense that may surround electronic music.

somebody give these guys a record deal in Europe.......2007-03-22
I've been a huge fan of Hungry Lucy since their first album and I was eagerly awaiting the release of Before We Stand... in Europe, only to find out that no label seems to be interested to release it here. So, I decided to order it through Amazon in the US, and I don't regret that at all. Six gems of songs - I can only hope that the next record will be released in Europe as well.

A Leppard's New Spots.......2006-08-07
I love Def Leppard. Who doesn't? For those of you looking for a Def Leppard clone band taking a familiar direction - don't buy this CD! Leppard's blistering guitar maestro Phil Collen takes an amazingly refreshing departure into his own very inventive style on this single. The eclectic new sound that can only be described as pure Man-Raze incorporates sounds of punk, reggae/dub, hard-driving rock, and some seriously wailing vocals courtesy of Phil's trademark gritty growl. The guitar, Collen's signature Jackson PC-1, manages to sound like an entire storehouse of different instruments, and then there's his ability to coax, tease and finesse an amazing array of squeals, screams, warbles, and rumbles out of what is theoretically wood and some strings! The enthusiastic Simon Laffy (formerly of Girl) crashes in with some of the biggest bottom I have heard in a song by a trio - you would think all three were bass players! Simon keeps up a mean, low, speaker-rattling bass accompaniment that keeps you itchy and on the edge of your seat, never allowing you to get too relaxed! And rounding off this incredible trio is the inventive driving backbeat of Paul Cook (the former Sex Pistol) who has learned that there's a lot more to hit with the sticks than just the drum, and showcases that admirably! This is the music of the future. There's nothing like it, but someday, new bands are going to be going for that Man-Raze sound...I did! you can't lose with this CD!

Motor City RAWK!!.......2001-05-08
If you want a CD that is "In Your Face Rock" this is for you. It is only 4 songs but it packs a more brutal PUNCH than anything you'll hear on the radio! Hard driving beats, nails on the chalk board guitars, and one of the greatest rock GROWL's you'll ever hear on the mic. Sample lyric from GIRL - "Girl the things I do to keep you mine, Girl the things I do to keep your A#$ in line!! Enough said about the lyrics. This is simply one of the best rock band to come from the Detroit/Ann Arbor area. That puts them in GREAT company (MC5, The Stooges, Big Chief, & Sonic's Rendezvous Band). If you like your rock bareboned and stripped of all pretentions (like a raw nerve) you'll LOVE this band and this EP. Take a chance on this GEM!
