Album Description

Stellar production and songwriting join forces in Here Is Our Praise, the sophomore release from Freda Battle & the Temple Worshippers. Freda transitioned from a regional artist to a national artist with her debut release, Serious Praise, in 2002. She is now preparing to go global with her collaboration with internationally recognized artist & producer, Israel Houghton, on her latest offering. Houghton infuses Freda's signature worship songs with a sound that elevates Here Is Our Praise to `another level', exuberant and unrestrained gospel music that will move you beyond your own experience in praise. Featuring thirteen tracks that are poised to redefine the worship experience, Here Is Our Praise is already one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-10-26

Here Is Our Praise with Freda Battle & The Temple Worshippers is an excellent CD. I believe I listened to the CD for about 3 straight weeks. As always, Ms. Battle's songs are worship oriented. The collaboration with Israel Houghton was a good choice.

I really like the whole CD, but a few of my favorites include Here is our Praise, Everyday, How Great is our God, Over and Over Again, and Hallelu. The title track is awesome, and ministers not only to the listener, but to God. I like How Great is Our God. It's ironic that I heard the original song about a week ago. Before that time, I never heard the song. Over and Over Again talks about how God shows His love over and over again. I wish Hallelu were a little longer. Purchase Here is our Praise, you WILL NOT be disappointed.

Side note--I was surprised to find this CD in Wal-Mart as their Gospel section sometimes has a limited selection.

4 out of 5 stars LIVE & IN LIVING COLOR.......2006-09-18

I HAD THE GREAT PLEASURE OF HEARING THE GROUP PERFORM LIVE AT MY CHURCH IN MAMARONECK, NY & I WAS VERY IMPRESSED. NOT ONLY IS IT CLEAR THAT THEY LOVE THE LORD- THEY CAN SANG(NOT SING). I WOULD HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS CD, BUT EVEN MORE IF YOU CAN GET TO ONE OF THEIR CONCERTS OR PERFORMANCES- DON'T DENY YOURSELF- GO AND ENJOY THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND HIS ANNOINTED VESSELS.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT PROJECT.......2006-06-30

After 25+ years in Gospel Music & ministry, i truly see the growth spiritually, and musically in Freda Battle. I've been familar with Freda's music for quite awhile now. Dating back to Family & Bay State days! Even though this is Freda's sophomore project on the national scence, she's recorded over 10 projects in her career!! This being the third (3) coming from the Temple Worshippers. Dating back to 1998 when she founded the Temple Worshippers, a collection of singers from the Boston area!

This project, is her best effort yet, collaborating with mega producer Israel Houghton!! A very radio friendly, contemporary cross-over project!! Which will be loved by those not familar with her. For those whose been familar with Freda for sometime might be hesitant at first or this project might take awhile to grow on due to not really capturing the 'Freda Sound'! I truly believe this project is going to put her on the map as one of the pre-eminent female worship leaders in America alongside (i.e. Judith McAllister, Martha Munizzi, CeCe Winans, Junita Bynum)

Another hit for Freda was the guest appearances by Israel Hougton on 'I Know The Plans' alongside April Thompson, who has tremendously grown vocally! Not to mention her sister Deborah Thompson on 'Great Is Our God'! Gospel luminary Parkes Stewart did a wonderful job on 'Right At Home/I Love'. It was nice to hear Boston native Clarence Powell on 'And Praise' a favorite of Freda and on 'God Has Ascended'. Another remake on 'For All You've Done' took me a minute to get used too with clashing vocals between Freda and Kerry Strong! It would've been nice to hear more from Kojo Littles who had a short cameo guest appearance towards the end of the song!

The only thing i really miss from this project is the lead vocals of soprano Shirley White! As well as group newcomer tenor Jason Hardy, whose has yet to show the world what he's capable of!

WONDERFUL PROJECT! GREAT SONGS! EXPECT GREAT THINGS FROM THIS GROUP!!!

3 out of 5 stars A Good But Not Great Release from A Great Writer and Arranger.......2006-06-30

Freda Battle is one of the undiscovered talents in gospel music. I say "undiscovered" because although Ms. Battle has been around for a very long time. National noteriety has eluded her for the most part. Freda's strength is as a lyricist and melody maker. She is a very good writer. I believe her best compositions have been her interpretations of biblical passages into modern, contemporary expressions of faith and praise. Despite the Amazon Editorial notes, this project is not her sophmore project. Freda has been a recording artist in the Boston and New England region for many years. She has had several songs recorded by nationally known recording artists and has traveled widely as a conference and convention choral and choir leader and director. She is a remarkably gifted as a writer, arranger and lyricist. As for her ability to transcribe the scriptures into modern day psalms; the girl is without peer.

I looked forward to hearing "Here Is Our Praise" believing this project may give her a platform that has previously not been available to her. Israel Houghton's name may give her the wider audience she deserves but I don't think his influence has enhanced her uniqueness one iota.

I am a long time fan of Freda and formerly sang and collaborated with her for more than seven years. I have known of her music ministry since we were both teenagers (A VERY LONG TIME AGO). I have always appreciated the spontanaeity and the gospel infused contemporary sound that accompanied her music. Her previous releases with Freda Battle and Family #1 and #2 and the two previous Freda Battle and the Temple Worshippers contain more of Freda's essence and spirit than does this release. Something is definately amiss. Her freedom and spirit seems too contained for me. I fear that this offering by Rev. Battle was designed to sound urban-radio-friendly. Sorry Freda, like Bishop Jakes says, you need to be loosed, honey.

This is not to say that the project is not enjoyable or nice to listen too, but I would much rather hear the soaring soprano of absent soloist Shirley White than the purrings of Parkes Stewart anyday. Perhaps I am biased, but then again this is MY review. They have mixed in Clarence "Tank" Powell, Parkes, Israel another Thompson sibling...Why not throw in a little more of Freda's spirit in there? To say it in the cultural vernacular; "Freda do not need Israel Houghton. Well, maybe his name and influence.... Freda has everything he's got and some. Everything except his clout.

Freda has written more exciting compositions than the one's contained here. I wish all of you could hear them. My faves on this CD are "Sing For Joy", "For All You've Done" and "Hallelu", the last two were previously released on another Temple Worshipper's project. Soloist April Thompson seems to have grown as a vocalist and sings with more confidence than on previous recordings. Towards the end of "I Know The Plans" (her duet with Israel Houghton) she gets a little lost in the mix. I also like "And Praise" a personal favorite of Freda's. It gives a glorious glimpse into the day the saints crown Jesus King of Kings on the Great Coronation Day. Good.

I wish for Freda a producer and production that is closer to her energy level and anointing. Spontaneous worship and praise with a biblical emphasis. The production seems a little muddled and not as sharp in sound and clarity as it could be. I wish the choir vocals were a little sharper and less restrained.

All in all a good effort for Freda and the Temple Worshippers. Those who buy it will see it as gold. Those of us who remember and know, will see it as gold colored, brass. Likeable and inspirational. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2006-06-16

Detroit-based drummer Keefe Marzell has assembled a truly inspired group of musicians from both the secular and Christian genres of contemporary music for his debut disc DRAWN WINDOWS, and the quality of its contents is a testament to his belief in having his music embody two crucial elements...a spiritual connection and high emotional content. Both are here in abundance, as he and his collaborators have created a Smooth Jazz project that is far more than the standard stuff... It's infused with an exciting blend of funk, R&B, hip-hop, fusion jazz, and gospel. Keefe explains it this way, "The group is called Vintage because underneath the smooth jazz melodies, all of our music has an old-school funk feel. Everything we do is groove-based - not just rhythmic, but groovin'... We have to play with emotion. That's what makes all the difference." Indeed it does on this disc, from the title cut and first radio single, featuring the great Tim Bowman guesting on guitar, to the very cool "Enter Slowly," featuring the fine sax work of Lenny Price, to the cleverly titled "More Is Pleasure," spotlighting collaborator Marcus Abernathy's superb keyboard work on a tune written by Keefe and Morris Pleasure. So, all the ingredients are in place on this album...talent, creativity, and most importantly spirit. It all comes together effectively and dynamically from this dedicated, professional group of Detroit players. You really need to check Keefe Marzell's DRAWN WINDOWS out for yourself! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

4 out of 5 stars A little erica badu and a touch jillscott equals surel.......2006-07-26

Ok let me say that this cd will grow on you...it has some songs that really stand out that make it worth the purchase.
All the songs that are produced by Erine Green:
"MY VOW TO YOU"
"EYES"
"SAYING GOODBYE"
"DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL"
The rest of the cd is good but these among the best and are in constant repeat. the best song on the cd i loved and adored was "EYES".hey it was worth it just to hear this song. The cd has a more of a jill scott feel with a little of erica badu feel..good debut.

5 out of 5 stars Much awaited for..........2006-07-16

I just purchased Surel's CD today and I must say that I am thoroughly pleased with the overall project. The CD encompasses so many elements of musical styles from the sweet music of the late 70's and early 80's to the neo-soul style with a jazz composite. The gospel and human relations component is portrayed on the CD and if you're looking for soothing, relaxing and even upbeat music, this is the CD to pick up. Most importantly Christ is most definitely represented . I look for so much more from Surel in the future!

3 out of 5 stars To tell the truth..........2006-06-28

Ok I am going to be real. The cd is AVERAGE... I was really excited about listening to this cd but I found myself skipping a lot of the songs. It has some songs that you will like but it is better to take some songs off of it and make a mixed cd with some other songs you like from different cds. The focus of her cd is lifestyle and situations you go through and she does an OK job at it... not extremely good and not bad at all but OK!!!
I believe people that think her cd is great would appreciate Shei Atkins " life In Stereo' Much more.

5 out of 5 stars The Erykah Badu of Gospel is here.......2006-06-06

Surel is a very unique artist compared to the rest of the Gospel Music scene. She has vocal stylings very similar to Erykah Badu however, she stays completely unique at the same time. If you take a listen, you'll see what I mean. Her music speaks on real life issues from a Gospel perspective: love between husband and wife, saying goodbye to your past, and she even has a song speaking on children being raised in single parent homes! With Tonex producing 4 of the tracks here, this makes for a well rounded project. If you like Jazz Neo Soul, (Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Angie Stone) You'll love Surel. This is Gospel Music at it's best. I'll be having this in my iPod playlist for quite some time.

Terry Harrington is SERIOUS. Don't let the fact that he is a top-notch L.A. studio musician lull you into thinking that he can't improvise. I can't describe how burnin' Terry is. Not only he is quite possibly one of the most prolific woodwind doublers ever, but he is a world-class improvisor. Do yourself a favor, check this CD out. Terry, wherever you are out there, you and your colleagues (Dan Higgins, Gary Foster, Bob Sheppard, Dick Mitchell, Joel Peskin, etc.) surprise me everytime I hear you play. This review is for all of you. Can I have more stars for this one?

a lot of times, when i hear new cds by artists not signed to major labels, I'm quick to assume they are bad projects because 99% of the time they really are bad. However, that's not the case here. Although,, I never heard of this artist before, I really like the CD. A lot of work went int it. He has smooth, soulful voice and a gift for crafting easy gospel hooks. The musicainship is good and it's a nix blend of old school soul with modern technology to make a nice cd for gospel fans who like their gospel with a middle of the road R&B feel.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my top five albums.......2007-04-29

I bought this album back in '98. I wasn't going to at first because I thought it would a bit cheesy with the childish video that introduced them to the US "Cleoptra Comin Atcha"... then I was fortunate enough to catch them in a concert special on the Disney channel. I was sold! Cleopatra Higgins is AMAZING. Her voice is one of the most beautiful I'd ever heard. I can't believe she sang with such conviction at the age of 15 years. Her song writing talents are pure genius for a kid of that age as well. I definitely hope she will achieve the stardom she deserves. My personal favorite song on the album is "Whatcha' gonna do Boy?" It sounds a bit futuristic. I could do without the remake of the Jackson 5's "I want you u back" and the boring "Two Timer". Anyway, buy this album, there is much to enjoy here:)

      Listen to:
      7) Bird Song
      6) The World We Live In
      5) Dying Rose
      4) Don't Suffer in Silence
      3) Life Ain't Easy
      2) Touch of Love
      1) Whatcha' Gonna Do Boy

I really miss those days when people actually HAD to sing to sell records. I look forward to your solo album Cleopatra Higgins... You rock!

3 out of 5 stars They only deserved a little more credit than they got........2005-09-15

Seven years is exactly how much time I needed to decide what my opinion was of this album, and here it is: Cleopatra was one of the most talented, if underrated, female R&B groups of the late 90s. That being said, there was definitely room for improvement. While expertly produced, the songs simply weren't catchy enough to have longevity. The title track comes off as egocentric and boring, although the other songs are lyrically skillful ("A Touch Of Love," The World We Live In," "Dying Rose,"). My favorites are "Thinking About You," and their cover of Michael Jackson's "I Want You Back." These tracks depict Cleopatra as they really are - catchy, fun, and sweet.

      3 out of 5 stars Nice album.......2005-07-05

I'm not going to be popular but then I don't intend to be.
When I bought this album I had two reactions. I was absolutely addicted, this music is R&B Grooves at their finest, and the music is very melodic. It's also cheerful and vibrant, and the lyrics are nice, But on the other hand I think Cleo's lead vocals are just too 'forced'. Take the song 'The world in whcih we live', she sings the first minute of that in a natural manner. I think her natural singing voice is perhaps the most beautiful singing voice (outside of operatic singers) I have ever heard. But because her usual technique is to force her vocals out and try to have a 'big voice' that she doesn't have her voice loses the innocent, quaint beauty it should have. The backing vocalists sing straight-forward and although she has to put more in it than a bakcing vocalist, I think she puts too much effort in her singing. Like I said, the first minute of 'the world in which we live' (track 8) is great singing from her, very easy and simple. I can't believe no-one in the studio told her she should sing with a mroe natural technique.

5 out of 5 stars Such pretty voices.....A smooth sounding album.......2004-01-29

They have some pretty voices. And Cleopatra can hit some high notes. It shows in "A touch of love" when she hits the G note. Amazing considering her age. I wish for a new release from these girls. Such talent. "Life ain't easy", "What you gonna do boy", and "A touch of love", and "Cleopatra's theme" thrive, as well as others. A must for late 1990's R&B fans.

      5 out of 5 stars Comin Atcha!.......2004-01-23

The whole album being written by a young girl called cleo and recorded at the age of 14 is crazy! this chick sounds like shes 20-something not 14! her big voice shines brightly and every track is as sweet and meldoic as can be! its rare to get a girl group outta the UK that can sing, act, dance as well as these girls!
This is a must have album for all r&b fans!!!

This is a great cd. The title says it all with "Heart & Soul".
beats are smooth and lyrics are very good. Vacal arrangement is also excellent. Its easy to realate to what he talks about in his songs.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-06-01

This new Artist is wonderful. He takes you back to the Motown days but yet he maintains today's vibe.
