A singer-songwriter revered by other troubadours, Iowa's Greg Brown here applies his craggy baritone to a selection of folk standards and obscurities in the public domain. There's an organic earthiness in Brown's voice, while the musical support has a homespun spirit thanks to harmonies from daughters Pieta and Constie Brown as well as Brown's wife, Iris DeMent. Many of the interpretations mine the darker strains of folk tradition--Brown takes the brooding "Who Killed Cock Robin" far from the whimsy of a children's song--while his "Old Smokey" strays a long way from the familiar into a ballad of romantic faithlessness. It would be hard to imagine a lower lonesome than his "Down in the Valley" until he hits the suicidal despair of "I Never Will Marry." Yet the rousing gospel of "Samson" and "Jacob's Ladder" brings the set to a spirited finale, and the spare instrumental interplay of fiddler and mandolinist Al Murphy, banjoist Bob Black, and guitarist and co-producer Bo Ramsey is superb throughout. Without reading the credits, one would never know that the two contemporary songs--Brown's "Ain't No One Like You" and Jim Garland's worker's anthem "I Don't Want Your Millions Mister"--aren't traditional folk as well. --Don McLeese

This isn't a typical folk or country CD. In fact i don't like either genre but this CD is great. The more you listen the more you love it. I listen to it constently and haven't tired of it yet. The way that Greg Brown sings along with his lyrics make this cd fun to listen to.

Easy.......2004-10-19

Greg Brown kind of takes care of you when you put on one of his records. You know he's going to get it right and make you feel the way you want to feel: contented. And so it is with this one, a collection (an odd collection in many ways) of mostly old tunes. The one I love most is 'Foggy Foggy Dew' which is a perfect, rather sad, but lilting folk song, beautifully arranged. Like all the tracks on the album, the sound quality is, as we've come to expect from Greg Brown, to audiophile standards. If you've got a decent hi fi, it's like having him right there in the room with you. Every song on this album is carefully, but simply crafted, and I suspect it's something I'll want to listen to for many years yet.

I'm an Iowan, and I'm biased. I also have seen and heard Greg so many times I have forgotten, but am always real pleased when I hear how he is admired by his peers instead of just his many fans.
He's a melancholy guy with just enough smart ass to keep me
always interested. His music makes the passing of every year just that much easier. Listen to a sample, don't miss this.

Not Bad, but need a second album..........2007-06-24

How can you have an ACDC tribute album without Highway To Hell. The music on this album is very good, but is unfullfilling without the aforemenioned number. I encourage them to make a second CD with more ACDC tunes on it, to really cover all the bases.

An Excellent CD!!!!!!.......2003-12-19

I think that the reviewer that gave this CD a single star has not heard this CD because:

1. It is an excellent CD
2. The guy who did it, did the Coldplay CD
3. The site he gave is the Record Label that this CD is on and this CD can be bought there

i respect the whole neo-classical thing, but this cd is bad. sounds like somone sequenced the songs in their synthesizer. check out http://www.thetributeto.com/acdc/ . they perform their tributes, and do it well. i haven't heard their ac/dc tribute, but their other tributes (linkin park, 311, coldplay) are awesome.

Totally Suprised!!!.......2003-09-01

I read about this CD on an AC/DC Fan site and they had a link to purchase it here. I bought the CD without hearing any clips or anything. So, buying it sight unseen, made me feel a little aprehensive.

Well, when it arrived I couldn't wait. I took it with me to work and played it in the car on the way. WHAT A GREAT CD & A GREAT IDEA!!! I love this CD! After hearing how well done this CD was, I decided to do something special for my wife ....and .... I took the next day off from work (which was a Friday) and prepared a wonderful steak dinner while my wife was at her job. I got a really good bottle of wine and I set the table with our finest table settings ... Candles lit and everything prepared ...When she got home, I had the candles burning, the lights were out, the table was set and I started the CD.... KAHPOWW!!! She freaked completely out! Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and what a way to romance my Rock & Roll Queen!!!

We've been fans of AC/DC since the 80s and this is probably one of our favorite AC/DC CDs, now!

I would suggest this CD to anyone who loves AC/DC and wants to add some spark to their romance .... We have candlelit dinners a couple times a month now and this CD is the main attraction!!!

On Dennis Brown's Milk and Honey, producer Flabba Holt strips reggae's modern dance-hall sound down to the simplest programmed rhythms, usually spiced up by an elementary keyboard hook. Far from hobbling Brown, this minimalism gives his velvety baritone more room to wander. The veteran vocalist fills the cuts with a dreamy hopefulness, whether he's singing about the political struggles of his fellow Jamaicans or his romantic intentions toward a sweet "Darling." BRING FORTH REGGAE, DON'T STOP!.......2007-05-09

MILK & HONEY: I'm quite surprised to see that there's no review of MILK & HONEY posted to Amazon. One of Dennis Brown's last album releases before his premature passing in 1999, I suppose some might expect the veteran singer to be past his prime here. I really don't like to say this because I think that Dennis Brown is probably the greatest all-round reggae singer Jamaica has ever produced, but he definitely did put out some subpar material in the nineties. MILK & HONEY doesn't belong in that category, though, not even close to it. With Roots Radics founder Errol Holt sharing production duties, the one and only Mr. Brown rolls back the years and gives a masterclass in straight ahead roots reggae and lovers rock. Sure, most of the material is not original - neither the rhythms nor the lyrics - but Flabba's beautifully pared-down, bass-heavy production lights the touchpaper that sends the singer's powerful voice soaring into the stratosphere.

The cover of Clive Hunt's popular MILK & HONEY is pretty much the best of the many versions recorded over the years. Equally impressive is the gorgeous, affirmative THINGS IN LIFE. WISDOM is a high grade roots rocker, and there's also an effective do-over of the classic EASY (TAKE IT EASY). Closing out the album, The Jackson 5's NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE simply melts away like butter. My top pick though is the superb NEED A LITTLE LOVING - up and coming reggae singers take note because this is how you do a proper love song: keep it simple, and put some serious soul in it! Of course, it also helps if you're blessed with one of the greatest and most instantly recognisable voices in the business!

In short, this is a great record in spite of its very recent vintage, and ample evidence that you can never underestimate a true reggae legend like Dennis Brown.

He was handsome, hot, had a rich, distinctive voice and was a vulgar SOB, but you had to love baritone Lawrence Tibbett's audacity in falsifying a composer's intentions while he made the music as exciting and flashy as possible. This two-disc collection take from the Stanford University Archives covers his famous roles in Carmen and Barber of Seville, plus his forays into pop tunes and even his rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner." It's an interesting time capsule since Tibbett touch on so many media--even movies. But even though most of these recordings predate his vocal decline in the 1940s, it's mostly for fans only. --David Patrick Stearns

Charles Brown Swings Hard.......2000-12-19

This recording of Charles is a bit harder swinging, a bit more up-tempo, than "All My Life", & "These Blues". All are fantastic recordings. If you can imagine a blend of Ray Charles, Nat King Cole and T-Bone Walker you have an idea of Charles' sound here. This is fantastic swinging blues. On the first couple of cuts especially the guitarist, Danny Caron I believe, pays mighty homage to T-Bone Walker. If you like that kind of blues, you'll love this.

A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29

Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.

I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.

Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13

CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues,who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.

Brilliant.......2006-08-21

If you love Van Morrison's music, it will be impossible for you not to enjoy this CD.

Being a hardcore Van's fan, I took it as a duty to buy this album. Not that I'm against this cross-over idea nor I dislike String Quartet music in general. Only when you like a musician so much, you're always a bit wary towards reinterpretation of his music. Of course many have covered Van's songs so far and some have done a pretty good job (Bobby McFerrin's Moondance being an apt example), but this is an altogether different affair. The result, if not extraordinary as one would hope, is highly listenable and consistent. It demonstrates that Van's forte is not only is other-worldy voice, but also all the other aspects of his music. When a song of any genre is "classically" treated, the result may be double-edged, embellish it on one side with clever orchestration but also ruthlessly reveal the compositional shortcomings. I'm therefore happy to note that Van's songs come out as good as possible after the "washing", at times attaining a true symphonic value and what is someway surprising is that the uptempo numbers work as good as the ballads which were easier targets and in some cases already included strings in the original arrangement. Good on whoever selected the tracks that managed to go a bit ahead of the first albums, including at least two tracks which are more recent and well-suited for teh project. Moondance (the album) gets the lion's share, personally I would have ravaged more Astral Weeks or Veedon Fleece, but I'm not complaining, I enjoyed the album pretty much and would recommend it to Van's lovers who also like instrumental music.
