5 out of 5 stars Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10

As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I own........2003-11-04

I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.

3 out of 5 stars Classical classics.......2002-11-12

The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2002-08-27

If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.

3 out of 5 stars Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23

Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Essential!.......2001-10-10

For the curious or the already initiated, this set is a must. Like most greatest hits packages, there are omissions here and there ("Shootout on the Plantation" and the studio version of "Roll Away the Stone" should be included) but, with the exception of the two cuts from "Anything Can Happen," there is nothing here that isn't great (although some people might have wanted to ditch the bizarre "Masters of War". . .I happen to love it).

The only problem with this set is that Leon has another, less inspired page to his resume that has gone digitally uncovered. This is not fault of Leon's though, Warner Brothers won't take the time or spend the dough to remaster and release "The Wedding Album," "Make Love to the Music," "Americana," "Life and Love," and "The Live Album: Leon Russell and the New Grass Revival." Gee, you'd think Rhino would have a field day putting these albums out as twofers and you'd think there are enough Leon Lifers out there that would snatch them up. While those late seventies and early eighties years weren't as prolific or as brilliant as the stuff here, it would still make a fascinating listen and is proably well worth putting out there for public consumption.

Legal and techical stuff aside, this set rocks and would be perfect to put on while conducting a long, cross country road trip. If you dig early seventies Rolling Stones, do yourself a favor and get into Leon Russell.

5 out of 5 stars Leon Russell Should Not Be Forgotten - What a Major Talent.......2000-07-11

This is his finest recording of Prince of Peace. I had a band that toured college campuses from 1973-1975. It was pure raw energy. What times ! People were still actually thinking from the 60's. We always opened with CSN&Y's "Long Time Gone". Somewhere in the second set we always hit "Prince of Peace" and then worked up to "Stranger In A Strange Land" when the back-up singers were in that zone beyond time and space. I loved this guy. Where is that Spirit today ? Change the world or die. There should be a major world religion founded on the music of Leon Russell. When I die and go through the tunnel to the light I hope the sound track playing is something from this albumn. If God is into this guy, the entire universe will eventually turn out all right.

5 out of 5 stars I love it Leon is the greatest.......1999-06-16

I have been trying to locate this cd in Nashville and the stores are so crazy they do not have it. Leon is the greatest

4 out of 5 stars New fan loves unique, free-spirited Leon Russell.......1998-12-07

Until recently I did not know Leon Russel even existed. Now I know that this is not uncommon, since many people do not know about him. This is unfortunate, because Leon Russell has played a huge influential roll in the formation of popular music in the last thirty years.

This compilation of Leon's best works shows why Leon deserves more attention than he has recieved. Upbeat and fun, yet insighful tunes like "Hello Little Friend","Tight Rope" and "She Smiles Just Like a River" get you in a sing-a-long-without-caring-about-tone mood, while songs like "Magic Mirror" and "Humming Bird" make you appreciate the talented musician/composer/lyricist that is Leon Russel. Also has great renditions of Bob Dylan's "Old Masters (Masters of War)" and "She Belongs To Me", and George Harrison's "Beware of Darkness".

Included is an entertaining and informational 10-12 page booklet outlining Leon's career. On the whole, this compilation is very rich in musical and lyrical content. It definitely has me hooked, and probably will for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars Almost excellent!.......2005-10-13

This Ruth Copeland collection is a good one with excellent remastering for stereo. All of the songs are here except "Madam Butterfly". Why they left it out is a complete mystery to me. That is the main reason I could only give this cd 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Former Detroiter and Ruth Copeland Fan.......2004-07-09

I was so happy to come across this CD. I have all three of Ruth's early albums, even have a 45. Particularly relevant in today's political climate is "The Medal" - touches my heart. I also love "Crying". Her voice speaks to me with such soul. Very talented and underrated artist.

Product Description

The Gert Town area of New Orleans has a rich musical history; its also the birthplace of one Merry Baby Sister Clayton. The daughter of a Baptist minister, Clayton began her recording career in the early 1960s, backing pop star Bobby Darin on Youre The Reason Im Living. She made her first solo recording the following year, cutting the track The Doorbell Rings. That same year, she cut a version of The Shoop Shoop Song (Its In His Kiss) that failed to chart for her, though it later did for Betty Everett, Kate Taylor, and Cher. In the late Sixties, she joined Ray Charles Raelettes, but it was her work on Gimme Shelter from the Rolling Stones Let It Bleed album that brought her to rock audiences consciousness. Moving to Los Angeles in the early Fifties, she carved out a significant career as a backup singer, recording with Joe Cocker, Lee Michaels, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Phil Ochs, and many others. During this time, she also enjoyed several R & B solo hits, including After All This Time and Oh No, Not My Baby. Signed in 1979 to MCA, she cut the Emotion album, which was released early in 1980. Regarded by many of her fans to be her finest album, Emotion covers a lot of musical territory, from the Eagles Wasted Time to an ambitious Sly and the Family Stone medley. The album was produced by Steve Tyrell (way before he became a solo artist in his own right).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Song!!!.......2005-12-02

This is one of the most remarkable works ever recorded! Merry Clayton will blow the top of your head off with these vocals! Just one listen through this cd is infectious. The musicians cook and the production is very fine. The tragedy is that this album was never promoted. Had it been played on the air waves when it was first released in 1979, it would have sold out in no time! Merry's talent has no boundaries and the songs are timeless. A musical treasure, this is one to celebrate!

5 out of 5 stars RIVETING & MAGNIFICENT VOCALS~BRAVO MERRY CLAYTON!!!.......2005-11-07

Merry Clayton is THE #1 legendary session background singer who really can out sing all of the numerous superstars that she has brilliantly backed over the past thirty plus years as this classic set clearly illustrates...opening with an incredibly great version of Webster Lewis' "Emotion", Merry hits the heights in this great song and turns it inside out infusing it with an emotional depth and vocal beauty that is extraordinary to experience and this masterful performance should have been a huge hit and a Grammy Award Winner...a tremendous arrangement plus very inspired play by a group of hot cooking musicians including a scorching soprano sax solo by Ronnie Laws and this is just the opener!!! "Cryin' For Love" hits a wild funky groove with hot driving rhythm that perfectly showcase another soaring and burning vocal...a passionate bluesy masterpiece "When The World Turns Blue (Melodies Of Love)" is stirring and hauntingly brilliant featuring a deeply soulful vocal that is just plain heavenly and quite moving with the great Joe Sample sublime on Acoustic Piano...a vocal tour-de-force is made of Don Henley's "Wasted Time" and by now it is clear that this singer is one of the all-time greatest who should be making LOT'S of very successful albums and be a household name...what is wrong with American Radio and the music industry for letting a masterpiece like this go without exposure and to the industry (i.e. Grammy Award Foundation) for not giving recognition to such a great set of songs done by an incredible artist at her peak...Merry turns "Wasted Time" into a gut-renching emotional experience that is sublime and beyond compare and Don Henley must have been thrilled and moved by this magnificent version of his song which is turned into a timeless masterpiece by this extraordinary performance.
Sly and the Family Stone are given a riveting salute by Merry that should have been and still could be a huge dance club sensation...this suite of songs takes it up a notch higher than the original versions and with exposure would have been equally hot on the charts...this is a smoking set of songs done to the max and once again Merry Clayton's vocals are peerless and burn the tracks!!!
Dangerous is this hot and cooking version of "Armed And Extremely Dangerous" which way outdoes the hit version with a riveting vocal and amazingly great arrangement full of fascinating tempo changes that are loose and wildly funky...a real celebration and again what a vocal performance...this athem should have been a huge dance club hit making one wonder where was the promotion...guess that department must have been out on an extended vacation!
Sadly all great things must come to a close and what better way to end this classic set of magnificent performances but with the crown jewel "Let Me Make You Cry A Little Longer" which Merry Clayton turns into a riveting tour-de-force giving a soul-deep performance that should be a must hear for all wanna be singers or anyone who wants to experience one of the great natural wonders of the music world! THANK YOU Merry Clayton for sharing your tremendous talent...anyone who loves a great, great singer do not miss this limited numbered edition of a true masterpiece...enjoy and lets hope that this once in a lifetime AMAZING talent gets back into the studio and REAL soon!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kaleidoscopic Funk Collision, Volume 1.......2003-02-15

Just as Harmless's Make Music showcases the style of music from the early `70s when laid-back hippie folk intermingled with soul and funk, Gimme Shelter (and its follow-up, Paint It Black) showcases songs from the early `70s when acid rock and psychedelia were applied to soul and funk.

There's Merry Clayton's scorching version of "Gimme Shelter" (she sang back-up on the Rolling Stones original); the Rotary Connection's hazily psychedelic "I am the Black Gold of the Sun;" the Isley Brothers provide the best track on the CD with their storming combo of Neil Young's "Ohio" and Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun;" and Rare Earth take psychedelic soul to its jamming max on their remake of "I Know I'm Losing You."

Just about every track is a standout example of this exciting music hybrid, though I don't understand why any Temptations songs from this era weren't included. Their "Papa was a Rollin' Stone" and "Unite This Land" are perfect examples of the type of music Gimme Shelter seeks to promote. (Listeners who want to hear these Temptations masterworks should just pick up the excellent UK compilation "Psychedelic Soul.") Regardless, Gimme Shelter should definitely be checked out by any fan of Harmless's other compilations.
