Ace Records, based in the U.K., has just released their second CD of Rosie and the Originals titled "Angel Baby Revisited", a companion to the hugely popular "Best Of Rosie and the Originals" CD distributed in 1999.

In early 1961, Rosie cut an album for Brunswick Records that contained 12 wonderful songs, all with writing credits to Rosie and Noah Tafolla. Many were written the night before the recording session took place. Six are featured here in true stereo. "We'll Have A Chance" was also issued as the flip side of "Lonely Blue Nights" on Brunswick 45 #55025. "Angel From Above" had already been recorded for Highland Records, but not released. This version is much more polished. The remaining six Brunswick sides are available on the ACE CD #738, The "Best Of Rosie And The Originals".

Doo wop fans take note. Two great a cappella cuts bookend the musical portion of this CD. Both recently recorded gems are a treat for the discerning ear. Opening the CD is a fine rendition of the classic "Dedicated To The One I Love", and folks, set your CD player to repeat on track 22, for Rosie and the Originals will take your breath away on the ultimate doo wop rendition of "Angel Baby".

An independent project featuring Rosie, Doug Salma, and Gilbert Quesada was produced during the first major oldies revival almost 30 years ago. This resulted in the upbeat 1973 recording "I Don't Understand" for Wax World records. Rosie sounds as good as ever on this single.

Two very rare gems make there appearance on this CD. "My One And Only Love", coupled with "Kinda Makes You Wonder", are both sides of a 1961 Rosie And The Originals recording for the Globe label. With help from the Cascades ("Rhythm of the Rain"), "My One And Only Love" stands out even though it's listed as the "B" side on the original 45.

Eight tracks are included from Rosie's independently produced project called "Steppin Out In Style". These songs were recorded in 2000 and showcase Rosie and the band's exceptional talent. One of those cuts is an English/Spanglish version of "Angel Baby". Don't expect all the songs to sound like the original "Angel Baby". Rosie has a unique, refreshing vocal style gives the listener a variety of genres to enjoy and a longing for more of her music.

Rounding out the CD is "La Bamba" with Ernie Valens and the Originals, as well as several recent unreleased tracks, most notably "Confessin A Feeling". Time to warm up that CD repeat button again. Rosie nails this 1971 R&B charter for Tony Owens with a passion that drips with emotion and transformed this writer back to the soul sound of the late 1960's. The James Bentley penned "Just Take Your Time" lights a sultry fire and keeps on smoking all the way through.

The CD is accompanied by wonderful pictures with extensive and accurate liner notes by Opal Louis Nations. If you have enjoyed "Angel Baby", "Lonely Blue Nights" or any of Rosie and the Originals' classic recordings, you will be absolutely delighted with this CD. A fine mixture of vintage waxings and newly recorded treasures make this an outstanding package from the fine folks at Ace Records.
