The Jackson 5's Third Album was not only that, it was their third in nine months. "I'll Be There," the signature ballad and the album's best track, was already ruling airwaves when the LP appeared. The meld of fuzz-tone guitar and soul harmonies on "Ready or Not (Here I Come)" and "Can I See You in the Morning" makes for sweet listening, as does a cover of the beach-music favorite "Oh How Happy." And "How Funky Is Your Chicken" is worthy of the Rufus Thomas hit it riffs on. "Goin' Back to Indiana," however, reeks of showbiz clichés, as does the next album's borderline-offensive "Honey Chile."

The laid-back Maybe Tomorrow nonetheless offers excellent ballad performances on its title single, "Never Can Say Goodbye," and Jermaine doo-wop showcases "16 Candles" and "She's Good." But the late-'71 hit "Sugar Daddy," included here as a bonus track alongside its flip, "I'm So Happy," proves that the once-fresh "ABC"/"Love You Save" lyric formula was running on fumes. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars An extra star added for sound and presentation!.......2000-11-29

The J5's third and fourth albums are, of course, melodic, funky, and fun. The real treat here, though, is the care lavished on these recordings. If you've heard the old US-released Motown 2-on-1 CD's of the 1980's, you may recall how flat and claustrophobic they sounded. Not these UK reissues. The remastered sound is spacious, dynamic, and ultra-clean. Add to that the classy cardboard slipcovers over the slimline jewel cases containing full reproductions of the front and back LP cover artwork of both LPs and you'll wonder what's up with US Motown that the British are doing a better job with American soul music. Anyway, these two albums (one one CD) are out of print in the US, so you'll be doubly glad to spring for this reasonably-priced import.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2000-11-08

THIRD ALBUM and MAYBE TOMORROW contain some of the J5's best non-singles from their early Motown years. They also represent a nice variety of music; on THIRD ALBUM, the big hits include "I'll Be There" and "Mama's Pearl." Some interesting covers are "The Love I Saw in You was Just a Mirage," "Oh How Happy," and a Jermaine lead, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." One of my favorites is "Can I See You in the Morning," which has the group sounding a little edgier. MAYBE TOMORROW features two beautiful hit singles, "Maybe Tomorrow" and "Never can say Goodbye." It also has a nice cover of "Sixteen Candles" with Jermaine singing the lead. Songs like "The Wall," "Petals," and "(We've got) Blue Skies" are all very catchy and have some decent lyrics. All in all, the material on these two albums is pretty ear-friendly. Songs such as "I'll Be There," "Ready or not (Here I Come)," "Maybe Tomorrow," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and "It's Great to be Here" have all been covered by other artists and/or sampled in hits by other artists, which shows the influence of not only the J5 but of these albums. Anyone who likes catchy melodies should look into these albums!

4 out of 5 stars Great J5 CD!!!.......2006-09-07

My dad has both The Third Album and Maybe Tomorrow on lps, but I took the opportunity in purchasing this two in one disc since I do not personally own a record player. I sure got my money's worth. What made me love the Thrid Album was after watching the J5 cartoons back in 1996 on VH1 when they played most of the songs from the album.

Its a shame that only "I'll Be There" and "Mama's Pearl" were the only singles released from the album, but back then, most artists would release a maximum of two singles per album! I love "I'll Be There" and Mama's Pearl" but I love the lp tracks that were played on the cartoon such as the two Smokey Robinson covers, "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage" and "Darling Dear" (B-side of "Mama's Pearl") plus "Reach In" and "How Funky Is Your Chicken" were the Rufus Thomas or early Parliment influenced tracks for the dancefloor! Maybe Tommorow was exceptional and I love most of the singles, but it couldn't compare to their previous album. I loved all the singles (title cut and the #2 "Never Can Say Goodbye"), plus "She's Good", "The Wall", "I Will Find A Way" and "It's Great To Be Here(sampled very frequently by the likes of Mariah Carey and The Notorious BIG)" All the other tracks from that album sucked, especially the Vandellas' cover of "Honey Chile" (Michael's hig-pitched voice on that one was funny though)! The bonus tracks were on point, especially the non-lp track slow jam, "I'm So Happy." This cd (mainly because of the Third Album) is a gift to many Jackson 5 fans and I'm glad I bought this one.

5 out of 5 stars Third Time Around - Two More Classic Albums.......2005-10-19

I bought this album at the sametime i purchased Diana Ross Presents.../ABC and Looking Through The Windows/Going Back To Indiana albums. But this middle set right here is the one I can enjoy the most. Starting off with "I'll Be There" all the way down to "I'm So Happy",Michael and Jermaine really show their vocal growth on these two albums. There's one particalar song on the Maybe Tomorrow album that really caught my attention was "Great To Be Here" cause i recognized the beat from the "All About The Benjimans" song by P. Diddy & The Family. Another interesting song is "She's Good" because of the drummer's consistant bass-high hat-snare drive almost throughout the ending of the song and Jermaine's smooth vocals coasting over the instruments. Jermaine also show the group again on lead vocals from "I'll Be There","Bridge Over Troubled Water","Maybe Tomorrow",and and my most played favorite "I'm So Happy". Michael also does a good job on the two albums also, but Jermaine Jackson is the MVJ (most vocal jackson) in this set.

4 out of 5 stars GROOVY.......2005-02-09

Yep this is one groovy cd. Maybe Tomorrow was always one of my fave J-5 albums. It has soooooo many great songs. Honey Chile, It's Great To Be Here, My Little Baby, Petals, The Wall, not to mention the title track. Third Album is not as good, IMHO. Whoever thought to have them remake "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a moron. How Funky Is Your Chicken, is a good tune though as is Reach In. Check this out. This is when the J5 were at their best.

4 out of 5 stars Classic J5.......2004-09-10

If you're a fan of the "classic" Jackson 5 (early, pre-pubescent Michael & bubblegum soul), this is a necessity. Then again, if that's the case, so is the "Diana Ross Presents.../ABC" compilation. This disc, the 3rd and 4th non-holiday albums from the group, features the group's biggest hit, "I'll Be There." It also features one of all-time favorite songs by anyone, "Never Can Say Goodbye." A third excellent ballad (and top 20 hit) is the title track to the "Maybe Tomorrow" album. Aside from the ballads, the J5 is presented at their most playful on these two albums. Songs such as "How Funky Is Your Chicken," "My Little Baby," and "Goin' Back to Indiana" allow the group to interplay more vocally, with light-hearted subject matter. "Sugar Daddy," a bonus cut and non-album single from late 1971, fits in this vein as well. While a maturing sound is heard in the lovely "Darling Dear" and the dramatic "Can I See you in the Morning" (both from "Third Album"), the group seems to revert back to the overtly bubblegum sound on the follow up, "Maybe Tomorrow" album. A few boring filler tracks pop up ("Oh How Happy," "I Will Find A Way," primarily), and Jermaine got a couple of those as well. That, however, is probably due to his reaching teen idol/sex symbol age, yet getting crappy love songs to make girls swoon. Despite the filler, these albums are important for their lasting influence. Recent R&B and hip-hop acts have uncovered these songs for samples (including Mariah Carey's cover of "I'll be there," the Fugees' "Ready or Not (Here I Come)," multiple covers of "Never Can Say Goodbye," and samples of "Maybe Tomorrow" and "It's Great to be Here"). This is a good glimpse of Motown's best before the great changes brought by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and disco.

5 out of 5 stars Third Album was the first 8 track we owned.......2002-05-07

The tracks on the third album are hard to forget. Reach In, I'll be there, Ready or not. This whole album is slammin' and its a collector's item.
