Editorial Reviews

Chock full of hits and nicely assembled, this two-CD collection focuses on Michael before he left the Motown cocoon, hooked up with Quincy Jones, and changed the sound of black pop with Off the Wall. Does the relatively safe vibe and the less-than-groundbreaking nature of the music make these songs any less enjoyable or memorable? No way--especially for boomers who grew up with MJ. All the hits are here, from the chirpy smash "Rockin' Robin" to the yearning "Got to Be There" (check those high notes!) and a handful of J5 tracks (chief among them the impassioned "I'll Be There"). For fans of R&B and for Michael-maniacs, this is a must. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

3 out of 5 stars English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of a young Michael Jackson.......2007-01-17

This is a superb CD with many selections of Michael Jackson during his preteen years and younger. The mellow of his voice as he carries each song is extraordinary. I would recommend this to all of his fans.

5 out of 5 stars " Great compilation from a young Michael Jackson".......2006-10-01

I believe that a lot of Michael Jackson's earlier albums have really been overlooked. This compilation should still be availabe. Mike as a kid can sing better than 99 pecent of the artist out right now - which is a shame. I don't know why most people don't give him credit for a lot of his work as a child and teenager. I think Motown need to stop playing and reissue the indiviual albums because they really are great.

5 out of 5 stars I love Him always will Period........2006-01-21

No one on Earth or any other planet can make me change the way i feel about this amazing super star Michael Jackson.I will continue to buy all his cds until the world ends.Iam absoluety proud to have this cd as part of my prestigious collection.Extremely highly recommended to all the wonderful fans who share my admiration of this living Legend.

5 out of 5 stars Jammin'.......2004-06-04

Michael was an incredible child prodigy. These 2 CDs I think summs up the reason why the Jackson 5 were so extremely popular and gives the basis for why he himself became the megastar that he became. I was really taken aback while listening to these songs and just couldn't believe someone so young had that amazing ability. I could have cried when I thought about what he has become and then thought about the reason, this wonderful music and all the hard work he had to do at such a very young age. But moving on, some of my favorites are mostly on the 2nd Cd, Music and Me, One Day in Your Life, Happy, Call on Me and many more. The Jackson 5 classics are I'll Be there, Never can say goodbye and an unknown J5 song, Too Late to change the Time (which is wonderful). This compilation is a must for MJ fans and for anyone that wants to hear some great soul music from Motown.

4 out of 5 stars Heaven Sent.......2004-04-10

I have been a fan of Michael's ever since he began. These songs bring back such good memories. However, I think the J5 songs could have been left out, and replaced with other Michael songs. Either from albums or previously unreleased stuff. Small complaint though. "Love is Here and Now You're Gone" has always been one of my fave songs, I think Mike's version outdoes the Supremes. "We've Got A Good Thing Going" also is a highlight. It suprises me that I still love and want to listen to these songs. The songs taken from the "Forever Michael" album also are great. I would love to see that album on cd with unreleased cuts. I know there has to be some of those lying aroung Motown vaults. Funny how, if I never hear "Billie Jean" again, it's ok with me. But these songs, are the songs of my childhood and preteen years and sound as fresh today as 30 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Even my kid likes this!.......2005-11-07

This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

5 out of 5 stars Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

Bassoon Me again!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!.......2001-10-26

I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

The title of 1975's Best of Michael Jackson seems something like an unfunny joke in the wake of the global success that the star found with Off the Wall and Thriller just a few years later. Best offers a handful of charted singles ranging from the incandescent "I Wanna Be Where You Are" and "Got to Be There" to the ephemeral "Rockin' Robin" and the tedious rat-love flick-theme "Ben." The rest is a mishmash of workaday sentiment ("With a Child's Heart," "Music and Me") and a few tracks of the proverbial pleasant-but-unexceptional work that the solo Jackson would soon transcend. --Rickey Wright

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not the best.......2006-08-16

The Best of Michael Jackson is a compilation of Michael Jackson's greatest hits and was released in 1975 by his former record company Motown. It sold 2.2 million copies worldwide and peaked at number forty-four on the U.S. R&B album chart.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Michael Jackson's Best.......2005-02-24

If you are a fan of old school Michael Jackson, this album is a MUST have. I am not kidding you. I own every single Michael album (including quite a bit of J5 comps) and this collection is my favorite. His voice will melt you. It is a superb mix of the innocence that caused us to fall in love with him and the beats that you can't help but dance to. I would have to say that a large majority of the album is slower, emotional music, so if that is your liking, this is for you. If you prefer the musical stylings of his "Thriller" and "Bad" albums, HIStory would probably be a better choice. Quite a bit of this music is featured on his Moonwalker documentary video, which is where I first heard a lot of the songs and absolutly had to have them! A couple of songs are works with the Jackson Five, but most are Michael solo. Also features my ABSOLUTE Michael favorite - Music and Me.

    4 out of 5 stars EARLY MIKE.......2004-12-09

This is a good collection of Mike's early work, though it can not compare to his later success. Neat to hear the changes in his voice from the first track to the two 1975 tracks. A personal favorite on here is MORNING GLOW, a sweet sad song (nowhere near as much as BEN is). Even if you're not a hardcore fan of Mike, this is a good enough collection to taste some of his solo Motown work.

4 out of 5 stars THE GUY I FELL IN LOVE WITH!!!.......2003-08-10

This had to be my favorite album!I really fell in love with Michael's voice at the tender age of 12(now I'm 16).The first song on the album "Got to be there" had to be my favorite, favorite song then.It made me feel magic,it had me mesmorized.I would just have this feeling come over me every time I would listen to it,like you wouldn't believe. The other songs I liked were "Ben","With a child's heart","I wanna be where you are","We're almost there" and "Music and me".I remember listening to that cassette alot when I was younger.I really enjoyed it.It brings back so many memories for me.If you want to listen to some nice (young) Michael Jackson songs (along with his brothers),get this album. It's nice!

    5 out of 5 stars A Young Michael.......2001-04-23

This is a collection of songs from Michael Jackson's solo work for Motown. The early hits like "Got To Be There", the brilliant "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Rocking Robin" and his first solo number one "Ben" are variations of his work with The Jackson Five. They were produced by The Corporation and they are tremendous singles. Some of the later work like "Happy", "Just A Little Bit Of You" and "One Day In Your Life" are not up to high standards of the early work, but are still quite good. If you want to get an idea of what a young Michael Jackson sounded like, then this is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars It is Good.......2005-03-15

You need to be sort of sappy to like this CD. I had the LP years ago (One Day in Your Life) & enjoy the music a great deal. You hear so much crap out there these days- what is wrong with some songs about feelings. One Day in Your Life is the kind of song that everybody feels sometime.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one.......2004-10-09

Like an earlier reviewer said, the "Millennium" edition of this c.d., as well as others are total rip-offs. If you really want a good collection of Michael's solo recordings from when he started back in 1971, buy the Michael Jackson "Anthology" collection - it's much better than this millennium spoof, and offers way more tracks than this few.

1 out of 5 stars The Millenium Criminals Strike Again!.......2004-09-27

It seems like the Millenium brand exists to rip off consumers and trivialize the legacy of major recording artists. First of all, how can you justify putting out an 11-track cd of songs which are usually 3 minutes long or less? Even more so when the artist in question was a legend even BEFORE he went solo? Surely Michael Jackson deserves at least 24 tracks. Millenium has done similar hatchet jobs on the Spinners, the Four Tops and Sublime. If ever a company's product was ALL about the money, this is it! Put these turkeys out of business--don't buy this compilation!

4 out of 5 stars From the perspective of a 24 year-old aspiring music critic.......2001-06-05

For me, listening to any music created before 1985 feels like an expedition through time in search of hidden musical treasures; I really didn't start paying serious attention to the music industry until the summer of 1989 - the summer between my 6th and 7th grades.

So did I find any sonic gems on this album? You better believe it. I was already familiar with "Got To Be There"; it's one of my favorite Michael Jackson slow songs of all time. For those who haven't heard it, I would just describe it as an innocent and passionate declaration of love.

We continue with urgently pleading "I Wanna Be Where You Are", a song I'd heard sampled in 1991 by rapper MC Lyte in her song "Georgie Porgie"; this song is great. "Rockin Robin" is a fun remake - you can almost picture a cartoon video in your head while you listen; the song is colorful and playful.

"People Make The World Go Round" was another surprise for me. I like it, but the reason it surprised me was because in 1996, the group Westside Connection used this song as the basis for their hit, "Gangstas Make The World Go Round"...at any rate, I felt educated when I heard the original, which is wonderful. I always appreciate learning something new (or old, depending on your perspective, of course).

"With A Child's Heart", and "Happy" are both great ballads firmly rooted in the pop tradition; benign, tender and sugary. "Ben", on the other hand is young MJ's eerily beautiful masterpiece. From what I understand, the song was used for a horror movie called "Willard"; the movie was about a boy and his homicidal pet rat...

The next two tracks don't really fit Michael Jackson's voice in my opinion; they were produced with a philly-soul sound that was more rugged than Michael's signature pop/R&B. Eventually, we make our way to track #10, the ultra-somber "One Day In Your Life" - my favorite song on the album. Here are some of the lyrics:

    One Day In Your Life

You'll Remember The Love You Found Here

    You'll Remember Me Somehow

Though You Don't Need Me Now,

I Will Stay In Your Heart

    And When Things Fall Apart,

    You'll Remember One Day...

I think this song is very sad and moving. I admit that it may strike some as ridiculously corny, but it worked for me. The sound and feeling behind this song bring to mind the melancholy that fueled Gloria Estefan's 1987 ballad "Anything For You"...

We close this collection with a ballad called "Music and Me" that ends the album perfectly. On this CD you're getting both versions of Michael - the child, and the adolescent. It's a great buy...

    Thanks for reading

3 out of 5 stars Good Only If You Entertain Sentimental Memories...........2001-04-19

....I like a good tune as well as anyone. And like many folks I was so glad to see MJ perform as a kid, I wanted to be like him. Hell, a lot of us wanted to be HIM. I, for one, had grown out of that, long, long ago....I've become fixated on my own wife and kids. I can be sentimental about them.

But, the issue at hand is what I feel about this MJ CD.

Michael's Motown cuts here are just "alright". Nothing good, nothing bad. "Got to Be There" and "Ben" in particular are good tunes. But until someone makes an all encompassing anthology which includes MJ's solo Motown and Epic years, this will probably only whet your MJ jones. It ain't--noways, nohows--the best thing smokin' though. Unless you take the view that when certain artists sneeze, it should be considered a masterpiece. I say, "Let the buyer beware" on this one...

5 out of 5 stars No superlative good enough for this found in my thesaurus.......2006-03-16

Below you will find a lengthy analysis of one song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.

This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.

The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.

(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding." (If this selection does not feature sound clips, look at other Jackson 5 records here on Amazon to hear the mentioned snippets.)
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
        *The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?

Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.

One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.

I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.

Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?
