Northern Sulphuric soul is one of if not the soul-dance album of 1998.Hotly tipped British Hip Hop producers Rae and Christian have without doubt the ear to pick up underground artists and showcase their undeniable talent. I love this album

Too old for the charts and too young for Beth Orton, it was a relief when a mate pushed this CD into my hand and insisted I listen to it. The album is familiar sounding enough to make it easy on the ear but if you're so inclined you can pick out some of the intricate and (one must assume) lovingly crafted detail in every song. Mr. Rae's scratching is a marvel and all of the tracks shimmer with craft and finesse. Check out 'Counter Culture' in Manchester for a live PA from Mark. Worth the cash twice over for the album, if you fancy a real treat. Go on, it's only a finger of fudge!!

Rae& Christian have put together the most suggestive album of hip-hop/soul/electro since Massive Attack and Soul II Soul. The songs flow right into each other, perfectly mixing the beautiful voice of singer Veba with smooth beats and samples. With guest appearances by the Jungle Brothers, Jeru, and others it shows once again that the Brits are doing it right. Every song is great and the combination of sounds makes for a complete and enjoyable album, sit back and enjoy the future of Urban soul.

Album Description

While a lot of the accolades Rae & Christian received for their debut album, Northern Sulphuric Soul were focused around the individual vocal performances from Veba, Sharleen Spiteri (Texas), The Jungle Brothers, Jeru The Damaja, and Curt Cazal - the album was and still is a seamless UK dancefloor classic.

The slick beats and sweeping musical soundscapes are the result of an alliance between the DJ Mark Rae and the studio wizard, Steve Christian who cut their teeth in the early `90's doing remixes for the likes of Jay Z, Omar, The Pharcyde and Mama Mystique.

Released in 1998, the album managed to tie together many disparate elements into a lush cohesive whole, bringing the best of hip-hop, DJ culture, soul, and pop together. With enough to please even the hardened hip hop head, the most discerning soul boy and the average pop fan, it represented a bold statement from a vibrant musical underground that provided a blueprint for a whole generation of new talented singers, MC's, DJ's and musicians.

Now remastered and reissued for 2004, this new version of Northern Sulphuric Soul will include 3 previously unreleased extra tracks (`Time To Shine', `Premonition' and `Bacalau'), all-new artwork and sleeve notes written by Mark Rae.

Perfect blend of pure hip hop with some great soul vocals. I will continue to support them. I can't compare them to anyone, but if you put together classic boom-bap with the soulful voice of N'Dea Davenport, you'll have an idea. Once again, buy it and support these great artists. PURITY!

By Far the Best Rae & Christian (So Far).......2003-10-26

Northern Sulphuric Soul is even better than their newer releases. If you've just heard of them, you should start with this album. It's been three years since I've heard this album, so the novelty effect kind of wore off. Nonetheless, it won't disappoint you. Rae & Christian carries with them a defining sound with melodies that shame the music makers of pop musicians (i.e. Britney, and all these pop icons with perfect little bodies and no real talent other than to pose and wink and scream). If you want me to sum up what Rae and Christian sound like... it's like the jazz-pop of downtempo. It's how a lot of people think of Thievery Corp and K&D, but they are still, very very good.
