If only it was the whole show ..........2007-04-03
When this concert was originally issued on LP many years ago, it contained only 12 songs. And when it was originally issued on CD, it was an import in the U.S. and still contained only 12 songs. But when that CD version apparently sold fairly well, RCA decided to reissue it domestically in the U.S. and add a few more tracks. What they added was "Today," "Calypso" and "Me and My Uncle," as one of the other reviewers stated, plus Denver's introductions of his band. That gave it a total of 16 tracks.
But given the fact that Denver never played under two hours on any of the occasions I saw him in concert, I feel certain that even with the additional songs, only about half the show is on this disc. So why didn't RCA put out the whole thing on a two-disc set when they reissued it? Who knows? SO HOW ABOUT IT RCA? COULD YOU PLEASE ISSUE A DELUXE EDITION OF "LIVE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE?" As one of the other reviewers stated, with the accoustics at the SOH, this might have been a once-in-a-lifetime show.
Several years ago, you put out a deluxe edition of "Waylon Live" by Waylon Jennings. It was originally a single, incomplete disc when it came out on CD the first time, then you put it out again on a double-disc set, which is AWESOME. SO PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR JD at the SOH!!!!
I was fortunate enough to obtain a video copy of an outdoor concert Denver performed in Sydney later in this same 1977-78 tour of Australia. Naturally he has the same band and orchestra. The picture quality is not that great, given the digital age we live in, but it is nice to have.
Apparently that show was originally broadcast on TV in the Land Down Under. The show is more than two hours long and Denver performs many of his hits and album cuts from that period that aren't available on the other live albums/CDs mentioned by my fellow reviewers.
It also would sure be nice if that show could be dug out of the vaults and issued on DVD as well with the sound and picture cleaned up for the digital age!!! Perhaps it could be done in memory of Denver, who was killed 10 years ago this year (2007) as this is being written.
SO HOW ABOUT IT RCA AND DENVER HEIRS?????
But until that happens, this CD is well worth having.

A Great Live Album.......2006-07-04
Right from the beginning intro with John saying, "relax and ease back in your seats" you know that John is pleased to have the audience with him.
All of the tracks here are well performed and arranged. Looking For Space, a favorite of mine, is slowed down and caressed by John's voice and the band. The entire album is filled with favorites of JD fans.
Listen to the consumer Mr/Ms Record Exec, give us more albums like this of John Denver live in concert.

Live at the Sydney Opera House.......2002-10-10
I wanted it mainly for John's version of an Oz folk song, Moreton Bay. This is a fine rendition, very poignant.
John is in good form and obvious good humour on this night, the live album is recorded in a single venue and has a cohesive quality and great mood. All the songs sound better than the studio versions, although I prefer my music live, which colours my view.
A must for any John Denver fan.

Rave On, Van!.......2005-06-15
I listened to this a couple of times 10,15 years ago and forgot about it. Recently, I found it in the back of a trunk and decided to listen to it again. It blew my mind. For me, Van is at his best live and Pee Wee Ellis is top notch on this album.
This album blows away all of the studio recordings of these songs which in comparison sound stiffled and artificial now that I have heard the real deal. If you like the track list, I don't know how you wouldn't like this album; this spiritual journey. Rave On, Van!
"See the man with the stage fright...".......2003-12-20
So that's the "warts", the "and all" is a good representation of where Van was in the mid-Eighties: free-form celtic mysticism in a supper-club soul-jazz setting. I don't mean that to be flip; Van had more "yarrgh" than ever, and he gets his vision across convincingly. Highlights include "Full Force Gale", with a slightly changed melody from the _Into The Music_ studio version, and with more kick, too. "Dweller On The Threshold" is really special, if too short. The mood pieces, including "Vanlose Stairway" and "Haunts of Ancient Peace" are sometimes undercut by Van's skittishness, but they too succeed.
So this is a milepost, a souvenir of where he was back then. There's nothing really raw on here, like "Cypress Avenue" on _It's Too Late To Stop Now_, let alone "Caravan" on _The Last Waltz_--his peak on legal live recordings, btw. But "Cleaning Windows" is a good, bouncing r&b number, a smart uptempo song to end this heavily into the mystic set. He almost sounds comfortable by the end.

Product Description
Thirty years before the current standards craze, and a couple of years before everyone followed Peter Frampton into the double-live-album game, the Pointer Sisters recorded an impressive concert set in San Franciscos Opera House. As was their usual style, the musical program was all over the map, from country to swing to blues. The record begins with a rather extended (over seven minutes worth) Overture, which would make the casual listener wonder if the Pointers were ever actually coming out to perform. But it was all part of heightening the expectation, and the album launches out of the gate in grand style when the Sisters get out from behind the curtain with a version of Salt Peanuts that would do Lambert Hendricks Ross proud. Despite having had only two records under their collective belts, the Pointers were a formidable live act; during the show, they not only reprised virtually every song from their petite catalogue, but they also got a chance to wedge in a credible update of Jerry Butler/Betty Everett (or Everly Brothers, if you prefer) hit, Let It Be Me. Most artists would be wary of approaching a double live album even after their careers were well established; that the Pointers could do it so successfully so early is testament to their capacious talent. Newly remastered by Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen of The Mastering Lab in 2004, this release features the same type of gatefold packaging that accompanied the original vinyl album.Customer Reviews:
The Pointers At Their Best!.......2006-04-15
Back in the day all 4 Pointer Sisters, released 2 breakthrough studio albums that mixed, Pop, Blues, Standards, Jazz and Country. Live At The Opera House captures it all.
Their hits of the time are here, Yes, We Can Can, Jada, Wang Dang Doodle, Steam Heat, as is their Grammy Award Winning Country song, Fairytale. Bonnie delivers a great read of Black Coffee, and the group updates the Pop Tune, Let It Be Me, with the tight harmonies. For an encore they deliver an over the top funky take on Love In Then Thar' Hills. The blues tune, Shaky Flat Blues is another highlight.
This is a great primer on the Pointer's early years.

During the early '90s, the Chieftains embarked upon a series of multigenre crossover recordings. Major pop stars were brought in as guest artists and a few had the goods, but others came across as wannabes or well-meaning if clueless PR victims. This Grammy-winning live album from 1992 features the Who's Roger Daltrey and American singer Nanci Griffith. Sadly, Griffith's husky, thin-textured voice is inadequate to the demands of Irish vocal ornamentation and phrasing. Daltrey, meanwhile, sounds raucous, unidiomatic, and amateurish; plus his presence with a traditional Irish music ensemble in the middle of British-occupied Belfast seems a bit much. In any case, courting comparison with the Chieftains' own singer, Kevin Conneff, is a risky business at best. The instrumentals are typically accomplished and future Riverdance diva Jean Butler provides charmingly percussive footwork, but the trap drummer on the last tune is glaringly out of place. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Why'd you bring Roger?.......2005-09-24
Case in point, Mr. Roger Daltrey; his rendering of "Raglan Road" (an overdone song in any event) is abysmal. If I were in attendance, I would have gone for a hot dog at that point. They follow up with a rendition of "Behind Blue Eyes" that might have worked as an instrumental, but it also falls flat.
That being said, the rest of the album isn't too bad; the band is in fine form, and the song selection is a good mishmash of the well-known and the obscure. The recording also sounds great, as "An Irish Evening" was one of the first digital CD recordings of the early 90s.
A fine "Evening," but maybe Roger could have stayed home.......2005-01-21
Highlights include a fine opening medley that gives the band a chance to show how well they play together , Matt Malloy's outstanding flute solo on "The Mason's Apron," that still stuns me every time I listen to it, and a closing medley that allows each member to shine.
But the guest stars don't really work for me, Nanci Griffith doesn't do a bad job but adds nothing special to the concert and Roger Daltrey sounds out of his element on "Raglan Road," and while "Behind Blue Eyes" is interesting as worked through the Chieftains sound it just doesn't fit here. I am sure "The Stone" (A special Dance when two lovers meet) is fine when you can see it, it loses a bit on CD. But these are not major problems and the sound is solid for a concert performance. For this fan, it's a pretty good time.
Excellent Chieftains, but with some not-so-good extras........2004-10-15
This aside, the CD contains an excellent compilation of vocal ballads and lovely instrumentals. Kevin Conneff does a lovely a cappella rendering of "North Americay." Other standouts include the rollicking "Lilly Bolero/The White Cockade," and the mournful "The Stone."
Nanci Griffiths and Roger Daltrey appear as guests of the Chieftains in several of the tunes on the CD. I enjoyed Nanci Griffiths "Little Love Affairs," and "Red is the Rose." However, I cannot say the same for Roger Daltrey. I skip over his "Raglan Road" and "Behind Blue Eyes," every time I play the CD. I feel that his songs don't fit into the style of the CD, and frankly, I dislike his voice.
Overall, I listen to this CD for its lovely Chieftains pieces, and try to block out its failings.

The Pointer's Cook'n At Their Best.......2005-05-25
The full orchestra completes this richness of the sound, and adds of touch of classical with their intro "Prelude to Islandia". Most of their early hits are represented here from "Wang Dang Doodle", "Jada", "Shaky Flat Blues" to their Grammy winning country song "FairyTale", to a great Medley of "Old Songs" that includes a cover of one the Andrews Sister's classics (Beir Mis Du Schein).
The Pointer's really get down on this set and the funky live reads of "Steam Heat", "Yes We Can Can" and in particular "Love In Then Thar Hills" take these tracks light years ahead of the studio versons. Bonnie's solo of "Black Coffee" reminds me why she has always been my favorite 'sista.
NOTE: There is a concert video that was made by HBO titled "The Pinter Sisters Live in Africa", this benefit for Zaire contains some of the songs on this set, BUT the quality is not there and Ruth was ill at the time so they did this show as a threesome.
If you can find this tape, notice that most of the band is wearing "Live At The Opera House" T-Shirts.

The Answer To A Prayer..........2002-03-04
The precise stereo placement of the 4 (yes, there once were FOUR Pointer Sisters; come back, Bonnie...all is forgiven!) individual voices amplifies the energy of the numerous scat solos. Quite a lot of humor, as well--The "Old Songs" medley still cracks me up. One of my favorite albums of my youth, and now it's on CD.
Prayers ARE answered.
