4 out of 5 stars If only it was the whole show ..........2007-04-03

I agree with virtually everything the other reviewers of this CD have said, but I'd like to add the following: It is a CRIME that RCA did not see fit to release the entire show on CD!!! That's the only reason this CD does not receive five stars from me.

When this concert was originally issued on LP many years ago, it contained only 12 songs. And when it was originally issued on CD, it was an import in the U.S. and still contained only 12 songs. But when that CD version apparently sold fairly well, RCA decided to reissue it domestically in the U.S. and add a few more tracks. What they added was "Today," "Calypso" and "Me and My Uncle," as one of the other reviewers stated, plus Denver's introductions of his band. That gave it a total of 16 tracks.

But given the fact that Denver never played under two hours on any of the occasions I saw him in concert, I feel certain that even with the additional songs, only about half the show is on this disc. So why didn't RCA put out the whole thing on a two-disc set when they reissued it? Who knows? SO HOW ABOUT IT RCA? COULD YOU PLEASE ISSUE A DELUXE EDITION OF "LIVE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE?" As one of the other reviewers stated, with the accoustics at the SOH, this might have been a once-in-a-lifetime show.

Several years ago, you put out a deluxe edition of "Waylon Live" by Waylon Jennings. It was originally a single, incomplete disc when it came out on CD the first time, then you put it out again on a double-disc set, which is AWESOME. SO PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR JD at the SOH!!!!

I was fortunate enough to obtain a video copy of an outdoor concert Denver performed in Sydney later in this same 1977-78 tour of Australia. Naturally he has the same band and orchestra. The picture quality is not that great, given the digital age we live in, but it is nice to have.

Apparently that show was originally broadcast on TV in the Land Down Under. The show is more than two hours long and Denver performs many of his hits and album cuts from that period that aren't available on the other live albums/CDs mentioned by my fellow reviewers.

It also would sure be nice if that show could be dug out of the vaults and issued on DVD as well with the sound and picture cleaned up for the digital age!!! Perhaps it could be done in memory of Denver, who was killed 10 years ago this year (2007) as this is being written.

SO HOW ABOUT IT RCA AND DENVER HEIRS?????

But until that happens, this CD is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars John Denver in Concert.......2006-07-26

This is an excellent concert. This shows his humor and his excellent musical talent. It even contains his flaws when his voice cracks occasionally which just shows that no one can always be perfect. This is a must for all John Denver fans. He always shows his best when he's in concert. I've been to many of his concerts and they are the most memorable and most fun concerts I've ever been to. It's just fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album.......2006-07-04

I really enjoy this album, I really do. Live albums make you feel like you are there and they can be very personal, unlike a studio album. It is too bad that the record execs have not seen fit to release more albums of John Denver performing live.
Right from the beginning intro with John saying, "relax and ease back in your seats" you know that John is pleased to have the audience with him.
All of the tracks here are well performed and arranged. Looking For Space, a favorite of mine, is slowed down and caressed by John's voice and the band. The entire album is filled with favorites of JD fans.
Listen to the consumer Mr/Ms Record Exec, give us more albums like this of John Denver live in concert.

5 out of 5 stars John Denver's best CD.......2003-08-15

If you like John Denver, this is his best CD. It was recorded to be a CD and the concert was at the Sydney Australia Opera House- imagine the acoustics! It is too bad the other songs he sang that night were not put on a second CD.

4 out of 5 stars Live at the Sydney Opera House.......2002-10-10

I inherited this album from my father on vinyl and over more than 20 years, I've worn it out. I had been trying unsuccessfully to obtain a new copy for a while. Surprisingly, for a concert recorded in Australia, the cd isn't released here. It was a pleasant find to see it available at [Amazon.com].
I wanted it mainly for John's version of an Oz folk song, Moreton Bay. This is a fine rendition, very poignant.
John is in good form and obvious good humour on this night, the live album is recorded in a single venue and has a cohesive quality and great mood. All the songs sound better than the studio versions, although I prefer my music live, which colours my view.
A must for any John Denver fan.

5 out of 5 stars A soulful performance.......2005-12-28

He changes up some favorites and blows the doors off some others. Van plays sax like he sings--all growls and mumbles and suddenly soaring highs. And the words "wee wee wee" have never held so much soul. Pee Wee Ellis and Mark Isham make Van's most eclectic and versatile horn section ever and the rest of band is tight. Good recording quality. Great remastering. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great, vocal performance by Van, unfortunately, the band rushes the tempos of some of Van's best songs.......2005-09-25

The titles says it all, almost. The material on this CD is my personal favorite: "Beautiful Vision" (his masterpiece) and the "Into the Music" time period are well represented. However, the tempos almost all sound rushed (I feel like getting a pitch adjuster and slowing down the songs a half step), except some of the slower pieces still sound very good ("She Gives Me Religion", "Haunts of Ancient Peace", are standouts). All in all a good Van CD, which is better than most musicians best efforts. If the tempos were more relaxed, it would rank among his greatest work. As it is, it is the only other place I can get more of the wonderful "Beatiful Vision" material, which is by far my favorite Van music. 4 stars, I am usually a tough grader, and Van Morrison is way beyond what the average musician produces, yet the rushed sound of the performance and the lack of any real musical "stretching out" prevent this from ranking as an all-time classic recording.

5 out of 5 stars Rave On, Van!.......2005-06-15

I am amazed that the reviews for this album are so low! Perhaps they are not ready for this album yet, that is what happened to me.

I listened to this a couple of times 10,15 years ago and forgot about it. Recently, I found it in the back of a trunk and decided to listen to it again. It blew my mind. For me, Van is at his best live and Pee Wee Ellis is top notch on this album.

This album blows away all of the studio recordings of these songs which in comparison sound stiffled and artificial now that I have heard the real deal. If you like the track list, I don't know how you wouldn't like this album; this spiritual journey. Rave On, Van!

2 out of 5 stars "See the man with the stage fright...".......2003-12-20

No, Van doesn't cover the old song by The Band, but on this live date his legendary nervousness onstage is constantly making itself felt. It sounds like he can barely keep from bolting offstage during the spoken part of "Rave On, John Donne", especially when he muffs his lines. "Oh what swine" instead of "Oh what sweet wine", but the friendly crowd didn't burst into laughter. In fact, in another part, they strike up a round of encouraging applause, as he's struggling to get a saxophone solo under control.

So that's the "warts", the "and all" is a good representation of where Van was in the mid-Eighties: free-form celtic mysticism in a supper-club soul-jazz setting. I don't mean that to be flip; Van had more "yarrgh" than ever, and he gets his vision across convincingly. Highlights include "Full Force Gale", with a slightly changed melody from the _Into The Music_ studio version, and with more kick, too. "Dweller On The Threshold" is really special, if too short. The mood pieces, including "Vanlose Stairway" and "Haunts of Ancient Peace" are sometimes undercut by Van's skittishness, but they too succeed.

So this is a milepost, a souvenir of where he was back then. There's nothing really raw on here, like "Cypress Avenue" on _It's Too Late To Stop Now_, let alone "Caravan" on _The Last Waltz_--his peak on legal live recordings, btw. But "Cleaning Windows" is a good, bouncing r&b number, a smart uptempo song to end this heavily into the mystic set. He almost sounds comfortable by the end.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Been There.......1998-12-25

It is very difficult (if not totally pointless) to choose a 'favorite' Van Morrison cd. The sheer volume of recorded work precludes such a choice. Also, works of art (and much of Morrison's recorded work is art) often defy such catagorization. That being said, I find myself returning again and again to this disc. The instrumental arrangements for the most part are spare yet the vocals very lush creating a sort of low-key ecstasy (if such a thing can be imagined) quite unlike almost any other of Morrison's recordings. The pairing of Van's voice with the synthesizers and trumpet of Mark Isham is inspired. These versions of 'She Gives Me Religion' and 'Vanlose Stairway' are absolutely inspired providing a thrilling emotional resonance rare even for Van. I never tire of this disc and recomend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Concise,rich,warm.......1998-08-21

This CD is a beauty. It's not quite the timeless classic that It's Too Late is... nor is it the sprawling (and hence, expensive) collection of live tunes that Night in San Francisco is. The Opera House show has certain concise, yet rich feel. It has been a favorite of mine for years and I highly recomend it!

Product Description

Thirty years before the current standards craze, and a couple of years before everyone followed Peter Frampton into the double-live-album game, the Pointer Sisters recorded an impressive concert set in San Franciscos Opera House. As was their usual style, the musical program was all over the map, from country to swing to blues. The record begins with a rather extended (over seven minutes worth) Overture, which would make the casual listener wonder if the Pointers were ever actually coming out to perform. But it was all part of heightening the expectation, and the album launches out of the gate in grand style when the Sisters get out from behind the curtain with a version of Salt Peanuts that would do Lambert Hendricks Ross proud. Despite having had only two records under their collective belts, the Pointers were a formidable live act; during the show, they not only reprised virtually every song from their petite catalogue, but they also got a chance to wedge in a credible update of Jerry Butler/Betty Everett (or Everly Brothers, if you prefer) hit, Let It Be Me. Most artists would be wary of approaching a double live album even after their careers were well established; that the Pointers could do it so successfully so early is testament to their capacious talent. Newly remastered by Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen of The Mastering Lab in 2004, this release features the same type of gatefold packaging that accompanied the original vinyl album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Pointers At Their Best!.......2006-04-15

This live set was one of my favorite live albums from the 1970's (see my listmania, Live Albums of The 70's).

Back in the day all 4 Pointer Sisters, released 2 breakthrough studio albums that mixed, Pop, Blues, Standards, Jazz and Country. Live At The Opera House captures it all.

Their hits of the time are here, Yes, We Can Can, Jada, Wang Dang Doodle, Steam Heat, as is their Grammy Award Winning Country song, Fairytale. Bonnie delivers a great read of Black Coffee, and the group updates the Pop Tune, Let It Be Me, with the tight harmonies. For an encore they deliver an over the top funky take on Love In Then Thar' Hills. The blues tune, Shaky Flat Blues is another highlight.

This is a great primer on the Pointer's early years.

Ken

Shocked to hear of June's passing today. This live recording captures all four sisters early in their career mastering every genre of American music - funk, jazz, country, pop, blues, swing. Accompanied by a fantastic orchestra.

During the early '90s, the Chieftains embarked upon a series of multigenre crossover recordings. Major pop stars were brought in as guest artists and a few had the goods, but others came across as wannabes or well-meaning if clueless PR victims. This Grammy-winning live album from 1992 features the Who's Roger Daltrey and American singer Nanci Griffith. Sadly, Griffith's husky, thin-textured voice is inadequate to the demands of Irish vocal ornamentation and phrasing. Daltrey, meanwhile, sounds raucous, unidiomatic, and amateurish; plus his presence with a traditional Irish music ensemble in the middle of British-occupied Belfast seems a bit much. In any case, courting comparison with the Chieftains' own singer, Kevin Conneff, is a risky business at best. The instrumentals are typically accomplished and future Riverdance diva Jean Butler provides charmingly percussive footwork, but the trap drummer on the last tune is glaringly out of place. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Why'd you bring Roger?.......2005-09-24

In later albums, the Chieftains have been trying to go the Santana route by adding 'guest vocalists', and too often, the effects are jarring.

Case in point, Mr. Roger Daltrey; his rendering of "Raglan Road" (an overdone song in any event) is abysmal. If I were in attendance, I would have gone for a hot dog at that point. They follow up with a rendition of "Behind Blue Eyes" that might have worked as an instrumental, but it also falls flat.

That being said, the rest of the album isn't too bad; the band is in fine form, and the song selection is a good mishmash of the well-known and the obscure. The recording also sounds great, as "An Irish Evening" was one of the first digital CD recordings of the early 90s.

4 out of 5 stars A fine "Evening," but maybe Roger could have stayed home.......2005-01-21

Representative of the fine mix of traditional Irish music the Chieftains perform, this concert gives the fan of the Chieftains a nice sampling of what they're good at with the occasional error in judgement that accompanies a live performance.
Highlights include a fine opening medley that gives the band a chance to show how well they play together , Matt Malloy's outstanding flute solo on "The Mason's Apron," that still stuns me every time I listen to it, and a closing medley that allows each member to shine.
But the guest stars don't really work for me, Nanci Griffith doesn't do a bad job but adds nothing special to the concert and Roger Daltrey sounds out of his element on "Raglan Road," and while "Behind Blue Eyes" is interesting as worked through the Chieftains sound it just doesn't fit here. I am sure "The Stone" (A special Dance when two lovers meet) is fine when you can see it, it loses a bit on CD. But these are not major problems and the sound is solid for a concert performance. For this fan, it's a pretty good time.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Chieftains, but with some not-so-good extras........2004-10-15

This CD is a recording of the Chieftains playing live in Belfast. As a result, there is some distracting background noise and in my opinion the clapping and cheering detracts from the overall effect of the CD.

This aside, the CD contains an excellent compilation of vocal ballads and lovely instrumentals. Kevin Conneff does a lovely a cappella rendering of "North Americay." Other standouts include the rollicking "Lilly Bolero/The White Cockade," and the mournful "The Stone."

Nanci Griffiths and Roger Daltrey appear as guests of the Chieftains in several of the tunes on the CD. I enjoyed Nanci Griffiths "Little Love Affairs," and "Red is the Rose." However, I cannot say the same for Roger Daltrey. I skip over his "Raglan Road" and "Behind Blue Eyes," every time I play the CD. I feel that his songs don't fit into the style of the CD, and frankly, I dislike his voice.

Overall, I listen to this CD for its lovely Chieftains pieces, and try to block out its failings.

5 out of 5 stars If I Could Give This Six Stars I Would.......2002-10-05

I don't know what the reviewer's problem is, but nobody in the Opera House this night was thinking about the British occupation, they were all too busy enjoying one of the best Chieftains live shows ever! Only Paddy and the Boys can meld rock, pop, country-folk, the dance and traditional Celtic music into one fantastic show like this. Daltrey's pub drinking style is PERFECT for the band, and the version of "Raglan Road" contained here is one of the best ever recorded. Nanci Griffith sounds like she could've been born in County Mayo. I would urge anyone to get a copy of this immediately, there's none better! A topnotch addition to any longtime fan's Cheiftains' CD collection or a good starter for those of you just beginning to get a taste for this worldclass Irish band's music. Long before Riverdance there was the CHIEFTAINS!

5 out of 5 stars A Blast From The Past.......2000-06-27

Dont let anyone tell you that omar&the howlers are Creedence clones From the the moment the blast of omars voice comes growling out of your speakers complete with feedback you have a rare talent out of the same town as Bo Diddley and lately out of the home of rocking blues Austin Texas Crank up the barbecue ,grab a beer and invite a few friends round and set the neighbourhood alight rocking with a slab of pure swamp blues If your foot fails to tap to the beat, ring your local doctor as you must be dead. So in brief ,if swirling organs and chugging guitars combined with a voice out of the deepest part of the gravel pit are your prescription for a tonic for the drabness of life so take this with the greatest urgency

5 out of 5 stars blast from the past.......2000-06-20

You could call me a completist as I have everything ever released by omar and the howlers From the first bars the swamp oozes out of the stereo speakers complete with feedback . many have compared omar with creedence but get real,he has continued and grown, they were at the end heading in a heavier track They must feed singers a diet of pure gravel with a dose of passion ,I am not a 50's style rock fan but this blast from 1987 has its roots in little richard and buddy holly. It is still timeless music that the toes tap to

5 out of 5 stars The Pointer's Cook'n At Their Best.......2005-05-25

Prior to the Pointer Sister's refocusing that started with the 1978 album "Energy", and their ranks reducing from 4 to 3, the Pointer's were known as a tight vocal group focusing on Blues, R & B, Swing, and Country (yes, Country). THis excellent live set from 1974 captures this era to a tee.

The full orchestra completes this richness of the sound, and adds of touch of classical with their intro "Prelude to Islandia". Most of their early hits are represented here from "Wang Dang Doodle", "Jada", "Shaky Flat Blues" to their Grammy winning country song "FairyTale", to a great Medley of "Old Songs" that includes a cover of one the Andrews Sister's classics (Beir Mis Du Schein).

The Pointer's really get down on this set and the funky live reads of "Steam Heat", "Yes We Can Can" and in particular "Love In Then Thar Hills" take these tracks light years ahead of the studio versons. Bonnie's solo of "Black Coffee" reminds me why she has always been my favorite 'sista.

NOTE: There is a concert video that was made by HBO titled "The Pinter Sisters Live in Africa", this benefit for Zaire contains some of the songs on this set, BUT the quality is not there and Ruth was ill at the time so they did this show as a threesome.
If you can find this tape, notice that most of the band is wearing "Live At The Opera House" T-Shirts.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THESE WOMEN!!!.......2003-09-30

Oh my...the Pointer Sisters bring so much joy to my heart. I listen to their incredible harmonies, tight syncopation and amazing energy...and it's all wonderful! This is the very best representation of what The Sisters express in creative power. I love their most recent disco and dance tunes, too...but this is raw Pointer Sisters and it is GOOD! You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Answer To A Prayer..........2002-03-04

This disc should be required listening in every music school in the country. Sure, there are some less-than-polished moments, but it's such a vibrant album...the raw edges just give it that much more character. This is what real voices sound like, ladies and gentlemen, before microcircuitry took the place of talent in the recording studio. I still get a chill right before the Sisters make their entrance..."Whoooo! Here come the Pointers!" yells one of the gals. Indeed.

The precise stereo placement of the 4 (yes, there once were FOUR Pointer Sisters; come back, Bonnie...all is forgiven!) individual voices amplifies the energy of the numerous scat solos. Quite a lot of humor, as well--The "Old Songs" medley still cracks me up. One of my favorite albums of my youth, and now it's on CD.

Prayers ARE answered.

5 out of 5 stars These brown babies gonna boogie for you!.......2001-11-19

Wow, does this album kick! I'm not a big fan of most live albums, but this one is just outstanding, all the way from the incredible opening overture to the walk-off. It just shows how incredibly talented and versatile the Pointer Sisters were and still are.
