There's a lot to be said for continuity and high concept, and Coheed and Cambria have invented an elaborate geeky parallel sci-fi world that spread over four CDs. If you follow the story line, it unfolds like some punk Harry Potter series; equally ambitious and didactic and almost as tightly written as the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed." You can also listen to each of the albums without a thought about the story and marvel at the musicianship, the intricately layered guitars, Claudio Sanchez's overwrought and rather pinched vocals and the sheer imagination displayed by these four musicians whose idiosyncratic emo seamlessly flows into prog rock. Epic, surreal, bigger than life, and utterly unlike anything you've heard in decades--even Geddy Lee expounding on free will. -- Jaan Uhelszki

2 out of 5 stars The 'musically stunted mans Dream Theater'!.......2007-07-26

As a prog and metal rock fan for over 30 years, I tried real hard to like this enigmatic release, but in my opinion it falls short on many levels. The vocalist is horrendous. He has been compared to Geddy Lee by many, but Geddy's voice has a LOT more soul, timbre, and smoothness. Comparisons to Dream Theater have also been made as well, but C&C's chord progressions and guitar work sound purposeless and disjointed, and DO have elements of the lousy 'Emo rock' genre. The fact that many here bring this up must mean many of us hear it. I applaud bands that try to 'push or break the musical envelope', but unfortunately, C&C's sound comes across as confused with no real musical direction. You can play with fervor and conviction, as these guys do, BUT if the music sounds forced and boring, there's nothing you can do to 'connect' with some listeners. Not my cup of tea.

5 out of 5 stars If Lord of the Rings was put in a blender with Led Zeplin..........2007-07-17

I wasn't excpepting much from this album before purchasing. I heard the Suffering which I thought was catchy, but I thought there was no way the album could be that good the whole way threw. I was wrong. The music ranges from rythmic harder rock (Welcome Home, and some of the later songs on the album) to really out there fast beats (Once upon your dead body, the Suffering).

Were this album really succeds is in it's great stroyline. The artwork of the album as well as the music relays a sense of epic-ness. You truly will not understand the depth of this Cd until you've heard it first-hand. Buy this CD I could not have been more pleased. In the great words of Apollo I and II, tonight the night on Burning Star IV...

You also may want to check out the Special Edition of the album. The Special Edition comes with a bonus DVD.

5 out of 5 stars a modern experience I'll never forget.......2007-07-09

Luis Mejia (son) - I have to admit that I am one of those guys who love proffesional and complex music but I certainly lost my hope since mid 90's, specially in prog and good rock, and stayed in the era of the 70's, a magical era wich I didn't live. I never met the band 'till I heard the genre "new prog" and Coheed And Cambria was on the main charts, I also recognized the band because my cousin told me about it so I decided to give them a try, and this was the first album I bought seen the good critics and sales. Low in hopes, even when I heard the first track I was surprised they applied that kind of instruments in a classical way. Even more than a year that I've heard this album from the first track to the last one I'm still shocked of how excellent, delicate and professional it is!

I characterize this album more as heavy metal or progressive metal, even a litle bit of alt rock, but it stays a little apart from prog, even when it has certain characteristics of the genre.

The composition of each track is simple superb, delicate, heavy and well thought. Lisetn well, EVERY track is incredible and outstanding, one of the few album you don't have to skip any track; Welcome Home, Ten Speed (Of God Blood And Burial), the four fragments of The Willing Well (specially part 4), The Suffering and Wake Up are extremelly potent tracks that show every characteristic of the album, including soft ballads (until half of the album I never imagined a soft track), rythmical and confortable tracks like The Suffering, heavy, potential tracks with escapist sounds like Welcome Home and Ten Speed, the most likely prog songs like the fragments of The Willnig Well, and so on, each track is different from the other one. The moods of the CD are quite difficult to identify; I quite agree with those reviewers who characterize this album mainly EMO, and though it has many characteristics of EMO (wich I still do not think is a defined or even real genre) it also assimilates alt rock, prog, heavy metal, and so on; within the moods the songs are very different among each other but I can say their moods are agressive, hard, soft, constantly changing, experimental and a certain level of complexity.

Among the artists the guitar of Travis Stever is the best feature in the album, he's such a talented guitarrist, Claudio Sanchez vocals are very melodic and nice to hear but it isn't a voice such talented and trained but stunning as well, Josh Eppard drums are one of those instruments that in every song you listen to them carefully, and Michael Todd bass can be heard, you don't know how it bothers me not to be able to hear a bass in a song, but he makes it sound incredible.

Viewed as a concept album, its a little weird and even a little dumb as a concept album, I trully know that they are trying to make five albums about Teh Amory Wars but it's obvious that Coheed And Cambria would have a lot more credit and much better critics if it weren't for this detail.

In conclussion this band demonstrate among a world full of pitiful new music how still it can be excellent compositions written, if they only take their time, any musician can bring back the flame of music, good music, and the CD is a masterpiece, my sincere recommendations to everyone who appreciates good music.

5 out of 5 stars Alan Dean Foster Meets Rush!.......2007-05-25

As my title states, Coheed & Cambria remind me of a really good sci/fi book set to music. Like a cross between Star Wars and Dream Theatre. I got IKSOSE first and still like that album better, I think simply because it is easier to follow the storyline. This album is much more musically complex though. It took me a long time to get used to the Claudio's voice because I a fan of Doom Metal not pop (not that they are a pop band), so it actually was the storyline that got me so interested. If you like concept albums, this is like trying to solve a really awesome riddle. I love the intro to Good Apollo with the violin!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-05-09

Yes C&C is an acquired taste, everything written in other reviews for all the albums pretty much spells out what people like about them. They are just what the current scene lacks, and bring back melodic, powerful, catchy metal in spades.....call it emo(the stupidest label ever coined bar none) or any other dumb term you want.....these guys simply rock.
The reviewer below is more interested in the album art, if thats your concern stick with cereal boxes or bazooka joe wrappers, this is rock n' roll. He also claims "sub par musicianship", which is an amazingly naive statement by someone who must know little about that which they speak. Grab a guitar and write tunes anywhere near this level. Sub par my a**. These guys are at the top of their game.

1 out of 5 stars as if the album could get any worse: voila, the censored version.......2006-10-06

This is an atrocious stain on modern music. The singer is talentless, anyone with operative ears can tell that. He sounds like a girl yet isn't. Just like New Found Glory and Rush, a bad singer ruins the band. In this case, however, everything that could go wrong has; a different singer would not fix anything. The guitar progressions are entirely lame. Don't waste your time on this piece of trash, or the unedited version for that matter. Terrible, terrible band.

1 out of 5 stars Just a small warning for the edited version.......2006-02-18

I gave the CD 5 stars because it's a great CD, musically Coheed and Cambria's best, but I have to warn anyone who wants the CD edited that, sadly you won't get it. I thought the whole point to an edited CD was to get rid of the profanity. I can tell you that's not what you'll get. I'll show you what I mean.

This is a direct quote taken from the Willing Well IV: The Final Cut: "Marked in your words I'm the joke, I'm the bastard"

Correct lyrics yes, what do you notice though? The word bastard is still left in the song and not edited out, let's look a little deeper at a quote from the same song.

"You're a selfish little _____ A selfish little _______ If I had my way I'd _______ your face in the ______."

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Why? Why leave in the profanity and cut out words that don't need censoring? Very little of the bad language is edited from this CD, but an abundance of words like: Die, Cut, Crush, Door, Kill, whore, have been removed so I don't reccomend buying the edited version. If you want this edited, you'll have to open the songs up on Audacity and do it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2006-01-23

Probably one of the best CD's I have heard in the past five years. The music is incredible and the words are well written. They have a hint of Rush and a hint of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. One of my favorites off the CD is "Crossing the Frame". This one should not be missed and you won't be sorry for buying it.

5 out of 5 stars A vocal spectacle!.......2005-10-27

This just in: Claudio Sanchez is the new Santana.
Here are my thoughts on all the songs:
Keeping the blade: A classy touch Leads nicely into always and never
Always & Never:Cute vocals by Janris Sanchez the ladies love it. Very acoustic, this it the lowest I have heard Claudio sing. The last line shatters the mood and leads into the more violent
Welcome Home:There's a video for this one too. the rythm is amazing and Claudio is playing gut busting Santana style solos on a double neck gibson and harmonizing like no other
Ten speed of god's blood and burial:
If you liked 3 evils you will love this
Crossing the frame:
This one isn't really wowing, but apparently has buttloads of signifigance in the story.
Appolo 1:
pure genus it's like faint of hearts
Once upon your dead body:
Blood red summer all over again love it!
Wake up:
filler but hey they can afford it
The suffering:
There's a video
The song we have all been waitig for. This is favor house on frickin' steroids! features uncle birmy's dirty foot choir (blood red summer). the only song mixed by another dude. "you may be invited but you're not coming in" after you hear those vocals you will never have to listen to music again. It's over. There's nothing better never can be.
The Lying Lies & Dirty Secrets Of Miss Erica Court:
Long name, long lines. Soothing in every aspect
Mother May I:
I laughed at this one, it's kinda funny
Fuel for the feeding end:
"Feed little maggot..." you can't help but mosh to that. Then there's a little spanish in the background that tickles the ears pleasantly.
I- Fuel For The Feeding End
The first and last few lines are among the best in the album
III - Apollo II: The Telling Truth
Has contents from blood red summer and apollo I "Jesse bad boy" is cute and joyously melodic.
IV - The Final Cut
violence
solos that make santana die and then spin in his grave
an amazing hidden track with some nice percussion. There's a ringtone

Buy this and destroy all other music

this cd is awesome. all the music these days sucks. these guys do not. i tend to shy away from new music, but these guys really have a classic quality to them. every song is good. this album is proof that green day hasn't totally ruined the landscape of music. coheed and cambria should be the next journey. buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the extra money or the re-purchase.......2005-12-14

If you're reading this review you already know that Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness is a 5 star completely amazing CD. The CD is phenomenal and I've already written a review of that, so this review is going to be about the bonus DVD that accompanies this CD.

The bonus DVD is well worth the money, and that's what I have to say! The videos for "The Suffering" and "Welcome Home" are cool enough, but all the bonus material on this DVD is awesome. The best part is the behind the scenes of the making of Good Apollo. There is some excellent funny and enlightening footage of the band as they wrote and recorded this awesome CD, and that footage in and of itself is worth the price of admission.

The Favor House Atlantic movie....um....has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen! It's really just Travis walking around to all of the other band members asking them if they think Good Apollo is going to be a good album, but it's definitely hilarious to watch the antics and everything that takes place as he goes around doing it. From Claudio singing about "incense and flowers," to Mike "wrecking" as he falls into the kitchen. For some reason there are bloopers, but the movie itself is basically a blooper of the band, and it's great.

And the animated vignettes definitely have a very epic and awesome feel to them as they place the albums songs over animated versions of Christopher Shy's amazing album artwork.

This is a very cool and worthy purchase for any and every Coheed fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence is Burning.......2004-07-20

When it comes to hip hop, the west coast is widely known for gangster rap. Artists such as Ice Cube, Xzibit, N.W.A. and Tupac always seem to come to my mind when I think of what defines the west coast rap scene. In recent years I discovered a band of brothers whom have brought to life soulful, conscious, and positive hip hop in Southern California. I highly recommend Burning Star debut album to anyone needing to broaden their lyrical horizons; to those who may need someone to look up to in their quest to express themselves through hip hop; and to those who (like me) have a desire for more than what popular radio can offer. These cats aren't about gimmicks or qwerks but their music can be described as surreal. A true "band" in every sense of the word. Burning Star blends jazz and funk with more eastern sounds. Just imagine listening to world music in a language all can understand. If you enjoy bands like Ozomatli, The Roots, Black Eyed Peas, and even the Mountain Brothers, you should have no problem with making Burning Star the latest addition to your music collection. They have the goal of bringing about a positive message and uplifting those with even the lowest of lowly thoughts. This album is lyrically precise, the music is hauntingly contageous, and the overall message will open the mind's eye. Although I do feel that this is a great album, I have had the opportunity to see Burning Star perform on multiple occasions and the impact of their live shows cannot be captured on a piece of plastic. So, buy the cd first, go to their web site at www.burningstarmusic.com, find out where they are playing next, and go to a show. cd... show... either way, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Shooting star - Solid midwestern rock - all american.......2004-09-12

Shooting Star put out some of the best midwestern rock (read all-American rock firmly rooted in the blues) much in the same vein as Kansas in their less symphonic numbers. In fact the inclusion of a violin in most of their songs coupled with their similar regional origins prompted many comparisons to Kansas. But Shooting Star has their own sound and vision and nowhere is it materialized better than in Burning. Lyrically and musically this album is top notch. Highlights are the title track - which they combined with Theme in their live show of the time, to great effect, Winner which is a staight ahead rocker but with prominent violin, giving just so slight a pop/progressive feel, Dreams, and Reckless. They were sort of combination of Kansas and Journey, if you can imagine such a thing. In my opinion, and the opinion of numerous friends that were all into Shooting Star at the time, this is next to their First record as their best.

2 out of 5 stars Not the end, but close.......2004-03-09

After this I pretty much knew it was over for Shooting Star. After the band's first two albums I had this band pegged for superstardom, but weak efforts on III Wishes and Burning doomed them to also-ran status. Too bad. In this case, Straight Ahead started things off as strongly as anything they'd ever done, but after that the well was dry. A fairly pedestrian run through of the old Motown chestnut Reach Out I'll Be There was of interest to anyone who might have been a fan of Gary West's voice, but that was it. 1981 seemed a lot farther away than only two years in 1983. 1985 would bring another token effort, but the title of this album pretty well says it all about the career of Kansas City's favorite sons, and that's sad.

5 out of 5 stars Shooting Star Lives On........2000-05-09

Rock and Roll good buddy. That what we use to say in the 70's & 80's as we sat around, partied and listened to rock and roll. Pure power comes from this band. Rock and Roll to stomp your feet or clap your hands. Yes if you love rock and roll, Shooting Star will not disappoint you.
