5 out of 5 stars An Album ahead of it's time.......2005-01-12

This album is for the most part a musical experiment by the Dynamic duo.Mabe a couple of the songs lost their meanings in their making & arranging, but the few great songs on this album make the album worth buying for any Tina, Gospel and Soul Fan. "Father alone" is really a very interesting track. Ike plays around with disco/funk concepts while still maintaining the origional soul of the gospel hymn. A solo song by Ike, perhaps among his best vocal performances."Walk with me" a solo by Tina is an 11 on a scale of 10. Vocals are top notch and the song is traditional gospel all the way through. A slow blusey feel. The famous "What a Friend we have in Jesus" was a given a pop/R&B/rock treatment and in that process lost the origonal message of the mournful lyrics. Kind of a runaway version. "Nearer the cross" is given a rock and roll treatment, one that gets the listner into a mode of foot tappin and gentle head bangin, a really great interpretation of the gospel standard. "Our lord will make a way somehow" sounds like a passionate R&b ballad. Heartfelt, intense, top notch vocals, highlight this beautiful hymn. One almost has to chocke back the tears."Glory Glory" a testiment to Tina's sanctified Tenesse Child hood rocks the rafters, and conjures up the most vivid images of Baptist Church raucussness. An energetic peice the perfect vehicle for Tinas Rock/soul/blues phrasing & vocal delivery to travell in. The album was way before it's time. Today Gospel is constantly being updated and flirts with pop/funk/hip hop on a regular basis. Ike and Tina did this many decades prior.
Really there 6 essential tracks on the 10 track album.
Father alone(Ike),Walk with me(Tina), Glory, Glory (Tina), Take my hand Precious lord (Ike), Nearer the Cross(Tina) Our Lord will make a way(Tina). The other have arrangments that seem not to go with 60% of the album. Sounding out of place. They are mediocore but still good, worth a listen.

3 out of 5 stars mediocre album finally available on CD.......2002-03-10

Contains some good vocals by Tina, especially "Glory, Glory" and "Nearer the cross". Ike's vocals sound not so good and the music is arranged in a strange way.Maybe Ike 's addiction to cocaine had something to do with it...
Recorded at Bolic sound studios in 1973 and now for the first time ever on CD. Thanks EMI !!! Now all their other albums please.

4 out of 5 stars FUNKY FEEL GOOD VIBES, YOU KNOW THE REST!.......2002-02-14

THIS IS ONE OF THE RECENT REISSUE ALBUM'S FROM IKE & TINA. IT WAS RECORDED IN 1973, DURING THEIR DARKEST HOUR PRIVATELY, BUT AT ONE OF THE DUO'S FUNKIEST MUSIC MOMENTS. THEY HAD JUST RELEASED THEIR LAST HIT TOGETHER, TINA'S LOVING TRIBUTE TO HER GIRLHOOD ROOTS, 'NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS'. THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS IN RUIN AND TINA HAD ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR AND THE OTHER LOCKED IN THEIR BOLIC SOUND STUDIO. THERE IS A COUPLE OF TRACKS THAT JUST FEATURE IKE ON VOCALS, BUT I PREFER THE TINA/IKETTE VOICE THICK TUNES. I LOOOOOOVE 'WALK WITH ME' AND 'AMAZING GRACE' I MEAN THEY HAVE SOUL AND FUNK PRAISE. I VISIT TINA'S GIRLHOOD CHURCH IN NUTBUSH EACH YEAR AND I PLAN TO PLAY THIS CD NEXT YEAR AS PART OF OUR 'ANNUAL TINA FAN FEST'. 'WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING ON' AND 'WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS' ARE OTHER STAND OUTS. GET THIS CD TODAY AND ENJOY, CRINGE, WHATEVER BUT IT IS A REISSUE.
