With the '70s back in vogue throughout the nooks and networks of popular culture, Smooth Grooves belongs on the top of your Christmas wish list, alongside those flares and platform shoes. Here you get the Jackson 5's delightful "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" (long before Michael went wack) with lesser known gems such as Bill Withers's compassionate "The Gift of Giving" and Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas." And in a show of the political passions of the period when Black Power was everywhere, the Emotions proudly rally round the Christmas tree with "Black Christmas" and the Impressions belt out a pre-disco dance-floor version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." Great fun and a very cool stocking stuffer. --Martin Keller

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Could've Been Better...........2005-08-17

This must be a first for Rhino, not an edited version of a song in the bunch, and just when an edit could've been used and welcome, too. I'm referring to the way too long Ohio Players "Happy Holidays" which gets simply grating. The phrase "Happy Holidays" gets repeated as the song progresses and the way out of range falsetto used actually squeals. The key players of seventies soul are present, missing is anything from the early eighties, Luther Vandross's ultra rare take on "The Christmas Song" and anything by Stevie Wonder would have been welcome. Bill Withers "The Gift Of Giving" recieved new life and was played on the radio after this comp's release. It's warm and compassionate, but it's a slow one. I remember the Impressions take of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" used for an Old Navy commercial and although I liked the song, I had no idea it was this version and was overjoyed by my happy accident.
