Amazon.com essential recording

Frustrated by eight years without creative freedom or commercial success, Willie Nelson left RCA Victor in 1972 only to be signed by Atlantic Records VP Jerry Wexler, a longtime fan. Willie and a group of Texas, Nashville, and Manhattan musicians (Doug Sahm and Larry Gatlin among them) recorded three albums worth of material in New York, including this benchmark collection. A musical crazy quilt reflecting Nelson's own freewheeling repertoire, it mixed Willie compositions old ("Slow Down Old World") and new ("Shotgun Willie") with a Bob Wills favorite ("Bubbles in My Beer"), Johnny Bush's Texas barroom anthem "Whiskey River," and a stately rendition of Leon Russell's "A Song for You." Literate, sharply focused, and earthy, it proved a turning point, validating Willie's creative quest aesthetically. The triumph was also a commercial one. Acclaimed by the rock music press, Shotgun Willie attracted many younger fans to become Nelson's bestselling album to date, paving the way for his future superstardom at Columbia and beyond. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars The start of something new.......2006-11-06

This was the begining of the outlaw county music trend in the 70's and its great. dont expect all of the songs to be shotgun willie cause theres some slow ones too but they're just as good

5 out of 5 stars Shotgun Willie doesn't run dry..........2006-03-04

There have been better voices in country music, but never a better vocalist than Willie Nelson. I consider him on par with Frank Sinatra or Sam Cooke in terms of singing skill. He knows exactly what he wants out of each line to maximize the effect of the lyric, and his phrasing is inventive and unique. Although he is widely lauded for his song-writing ability, it is his delivery that makes the songs stand out. Shotgun Willie is no exception.

Unlike Red-Headed Stranger or Phases and Stages, there is no unifying concept to hold the album together. This is just Willie being Willie. He's so relaxed and comfortable with the material that the tempo never really makes it above a laid back toe-tapper. And who cares? I could sit back and tap my toe to music of this caliber much longer than the 40 minute running time. Another difference from his string of concept albums is the variety of songs here. Tougher than Leather, for instance, seems to run together a little bit, and even his finest conceptual efforts repeat musical themes throughout, making them more of an overall experience. On Shotgun Willie, every track can stand alone. There is no filler. The title track is wry and amusing with an accompanying horn section that sounds just at home as the strings backing Willie on "Slow Down Old World", or the honky-tonk piano and fiddle on "Bubbles in My Beer". "Whiskey River" is worlds apart from his raucous live version, but none-the-less effective. By the time he chuckles on the second verse of the track, you are so engrossed that you chuckle along with him, even though you're not sure what's so funny.

That's not to say that the songs aren't cohesive, because they are. The arrangements are lovely and uncluttered regardless of what instruments are utilized. Willie's humor is evident on many tracks (particularly on one of my favorites, "You Look Like the Devil in the Morning"). And the covers stand along side the originals in seamless harmony. These are all Willie's songs now. Despite the sad lyrical content (these are by and large break-up songs), this is a joyous album to behold. The only song that breaks the playful mood is the final track, a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song for You". This one may have you spilling tears in your beer, but only because the stark vocal performance is truly affecting.

Shotgun Willie may be Nelson's finest hour (Stranger provides the strongest argument otherwise). There isn't a superfluous moment on this album, and you might find yourself leaving it on repeat throughout the day. In fact, I'm going to start it up again, right now.

5 out of 5 stars superb record...........2006-01-24

this album is a trip - the thoughtful, humoruous, touching, lyrics combine well with Willie's unique voice creating a true "feel" throughout the record. i wish it were longer!!

4 out of 5 stars Textbook of Willie Nelson's eclectic music.......2002-08-05

Having broken free of RCA Nashville, Nelson spent a two album stint on Atlantic. This 1973 debut for the label covers a lot of ground, blending Nelson originals with covers (including a pair of Bob Wills titles and a pair from Leon Russell, including "A Song For You") across country, jazz and Texas storytelling tradition. As fruitfully as Nelson has conquered the charts over the years, album-styled music such as this is clearly his first love.

Highlights include the (then) newly-penned autobiographical title track, a soulful version of "Whiskey River" that greatly changes mood from the live hit single, the tearful (and perhaps ironically self-fulfilling) original "Sad Songs and Waltzes," and a family take of Bob Wills' "Say All Night (Stay a Little Longer)."

This is complex, thoughtful music with the sophistication of its country musical roots and its New York City recording location. Those familiar only with the more readily digestible hits will find a fuller philosophical and musical meal here.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2002-03-12

This is one of the best Willie cd's. There really
isn't a bad track on the disc. The now Willie Standards
Stay All Night and Whiskey River (a more mellow version)
are included which are both great. Other great
songs would be Sad Songs and Waltzes + Devil in a Sleepin
Bag.

This one is worth the money...

5 out of 5 stars Love IT!.......2006-04-29

I will admit, when I first bought this CD, I bought it simply because it had Tony's name on it, and I've loved him since his MMC days. I was very pleasantly surprised when I put it in my CD player, and listened to the first song. I was hooked. I have a bad habit of buying CDs for only one song, and I thought that this was going to be one of those CDs, but with each song, the melodies, the lyrics, the passion just kept getting stronger and stronger

Lucca is a real talent. His lyrics grab your heart, and you can't help but relate. "Catch Me" is definitely my favorite song, but there are so many good one on this CD like the titular "Shotgun," the catchy "Maiden" which is always stuck in my head, and the poignant "Bad Guy."

For anyone who likes Tyler Hilton, John Mayer, or Gavin DeGraw, this is for you. From now on you'll be saying, for anyone who likes Tony Lucca. I can't wait 'til he makes it big so I can get another CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-08-02

Although Lucca's soul comes out more in an acoustic setting, this album is definitely worth adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Man have talent!.......2005-05-14

Shotgun shows the diferent sides of Tony and his incredible talent. You can feel his pasion and emotion on his lyrics. I'm telling you this album goes everywhere with me. If your looking for reel, good music you just found it. So don't think twice and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The studio album I've been waiting for........2004-10-20

As a huge MMC fan back in the day I'm ashamed to say I forgot about Tony Lucca. Then one day, puttering around online, I 'found' him again. I've collected all his music since and have been eagerly awaiting a studio album from him. "Shotgun" does not disappoint. While it's almost a new sound for Tony, the heart and soul of his songs hold true.

I almost didn't want Tony to create a studio album. I was afraid some of his honesty and integrity might be compromised at the hands of music producers. Perhaps because his friends JC and Dale backed him or maybe just because Tony did things his way, the studio album is every bit as amazing as his other self-produced efforts.

This is a great step in an already successful career. Congrats, Tony!

5 out of 5 stars For lovers of singer-songwriters everywhere!.......2004-07-08

All I can say about this album is that it is inspirationalamazingbeautifultimelessinspiringmindblowing!!! I love it and I can listen to it for hours and find something else I love about it. Not only is Tony an amazing guitarist, but his lyrics are universal and allow all of his listeners to relate in some way. Also, if you love his CD, seeing him live will have you hooked forever because he has developed a way to come across on stage even more powerfully than he does on the CD!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST 'UNKNOWN' HARD ROCK/METAL CD.......2007-06-09

When I first discovered this CD a few years ago, I was totally blown away by how impressive it sounds from start to finish. I wasn't expecting a lot, but I had heard some good things about the song Heartbreak Blvd so I wanted to check it out. I am very glad I did! Heartbreak Blvd is truly a hard rock gem that should have become huge. I can listen to it over and over again (definitely worthy of being cranked at high volume from the car stereo)! Nobody's Home is probably my second favorite song. Living Without You, Ride the Storm, and Free are GREAT ballads, but they definitely don't come off as being sappy. They all have a harder edge to them and I hesitate to call "Free" a ballad. The rest of the songs are all good in various ways. None of them are are absolute killers, but I don't find much filler here at all either. Every song rocks pretty hard with plenty of great guitar action and drum pounding to satisfy any hard rock fan.

I own over 600 CDs from the hard rock/metal genre (mainly late 80's/early 90's material) and this CD ranks up there with the best of them. If you already own the material from the mainstream acts from that era (Poison, Ratt, Skid Row, Dokken, Scorpions, Ozzy, etc.) and you are looking for something new to listen to, this should top your list. I have been exploring a lot of relatively unknown acts like this lately, I will say that this is THE BEST overall CD I have come across in the dozens I have reviewed.

5 out of 5 stars This Album will never get old.......2005-06-18

It is a shame that Tim Skold is backing Marilyn Manson on bass. This is one of my all time favorate albums. This has been a staple in my collection for nearly 15 years. From beginning to end, this is glam metal done better. Harry Cody shines and shows us what a shredder can do and does it better. "Heartbreak BLVD" is a guitar driven gem with great hooks and fun to listen to. "Living Without You" is a power ballad that should have been an anthem for the broken hearted. Do yourself a favor and buy this now.

4 out of 5 stars Zinny Sounds Bitter (AKA. Johnny Angel).......2005-06-15

Well if you can't find what is spectacular about this record you don't like hard rock music. I have to say that it took me a few listens to get past Tims voice. He isn't the greatest singer! But there is no denying the songs. The song writing from the first album to the second are leaps and bounds better. Tim and Harry are at the top of their game. Honestly the worst part of the debut record was Zinny's over the top shrieking. It was a good album with a singer who didn't really know what he was doing.
The albums highlights are "Heartbreak Blvd.", "Living Without You" & "Can't Fool Me". With Tim's vocals on the second album it is a much easier listen. As the debut becomes annoying after a few songs in a row. I only wish Nirvana didn't completely kill hard rock because by now Shotgun Messiah would have been a household name. Harry was supposed to have recorded with Matt Kramer who sang on the first two Saigon Kick records. If it really exists let me know I am interested.

5 out of 5 stars Song for Song, one of the best albums.......2005-04-02

As a big fan of rock and metal I have to say that this was one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to. Song for song it refuses to let me down, just the epic sound enough is something I wish I had more of. I know little of the band at this point, but there must have been some serious issues that caused them not to become a mega rock band. Very glad I was recommended to this album and plan on soon picking up their self-titled album. An amazing sound and unique style, wow.

5 out of 5 stars great hard rock album, shut up johnny, I mean zinny.......2005-03-06

with the exception of the reviewer Johnny Angel who I think is the old singer for shotgun, Zinny j. Zan, I believe most hard rock fans will find this album indespensable. It is true SM changed and evolved on each successive release. The first cd was glam, decent but not great. This cd, straight ahead hard rock, delivered better than most of thier competition. The third cd, violent new breed(my personal favorite) was industrial metal. The true test of any band is the quality of the songs. This band passes with flying colors! Second Coming Starts out strong and caries you on a journey through many different styles of rock, each one delivered with power and grace. Not a bad song in the bunch. Looking back so many years later, all that matters is the music, not labels and this is great music. When a band can change styles and still be better at those styles than the bands that stick with their formula, that just proves their veratility and incredible talent.

5 out of 5 stars If you can get your hands on this album... DO SO........2007-06-14

VIOLENT NEW BREED is without a doubt one of the ten best albums I have ever heard, and I listen to a lot of music. Shotgun Messiah started off as a hair metal band, and a pretty good one at that. But with VNB, we see the definitive paradigm of industrial heavy metal. The album itself gives new meaning to both sophistication and aggression, but what Shotgun Messiah has here that makes VNB so superior to everything before it, and everything that came after it (Ministry, KMFDM, Sister Machine Gun, Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward, and so forth) is an uncompromising sense of melody. All the tracks rage hard and fast, but underneath them all is a strong connection to classic, hands in the air arena rock. Beneath all distortion and audio effects, you can actually hum along to "Jihad," and have to fight the urge to bust out your best air guitar skills during the bridge/solo in the titular "Violent New Breed." The majority of industrial rock is tone deaf and too wrapped up in the mystique of adding oppressive layers of sheer noise just to create that "industrial sound." In contrast, VNB maintains a keen connection to classic acts like AC/DC, lending tracks like the aforementioned "Jihad" the same kind of light-on-its-feet rock'n roll feel of "Shoot To Thrill." VIOLENT NEW BREED is a rare beast, and these days finding a copy can be difficult, but fans of this genre and music collectors with a taste for the premium stuff, it's undoubtedly worth it. Shotgun Messiah rocks, and VIOLENT NEW BREED is an album worthy of iconic status.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Anger-Fueled Industrial Experimentation.......2007-02-13

I should start by pointing out that I was a child of the '80s, and a diehard guitar freak, so I went through every rock music trend there was...I knew this band both before and after this album, and I must say, this is the only Shotgun Messiah album that matters, and an industrial milestone that should have mattered, but didn't.

Let's face it kids, hard rock (especially glam rock and hair metal) pretty much sucked. Sure, it had hooks, but it was basically cheesy. When the nineties hit, they really did pop music a favor in a lot of ways....Shotgun took a drastic step in the right direction, dropped the "Oooh baby" schtick of their previous efforts, got pissed and put out a NIN-meets-hard-rock and metal album. Does it work? I'll tell you what, this disc is a permanent fixture in my CD collection, and I have worn out 3 copies. KMFDM and Ministry only wish they could have grooved like this...it is much better than a lot of the popular industrial bands of the '90s. A forgotten classic, mixing elements of rock, industrial and electronica, metal and good-old fashioned American anti-establishment angst. I'll always love this album on those days when you just want to be mad about something....classic!

5 out of 5 stars it blew me away........2006-09-18

Ill be honest. I didnt expect much from this album. Don't get me wrong, I loved MDMFK, but I just wasnt sure if Tim could survive on his own. Well I was wrong....very wrong. An adrenaline packed thrill ride from start to finish. These songs start fast and never stop pounding. Sure, some of them do kinda sound similar, but i'll be honest I didn't care. A great album to blast in your car with all the windows rolled down and a great album to show your friends. I'd recommend this album to anyone and everyone, my new favorite headbanger. ;)

3 out of 5 stars Violent direction change.......2006-07-12

SM were originally touted as a hair metal hard rock act. They failed to find success beyond a string of photos in Metal Edge magazine. And every pretty boy pop metal act achieved that, didn't they? Well the bands first album, apparently released while they were still called Kingpin, was called Welcome to Bop City, their second disc Second Coming followed (Kerrang magazine once called it a 'god among records') and then there was the mini LP I Want More.

But the real history of this album starts with the major personnel changes that rocked the band and it's direction as low and behold this is a proto industrial album. I say proto because industrial metal was still open for futher definition in '94. But Shotgun Messiah certainly give it the ol' college try.

The vocals are cutting, the do fire. Of course they are heavily treated and so lose a lot of expression but that's the sub genre in a nutshell isn't it? The 'drumming' attack is certainly persistent but musically it's the guitars that are so nagging, they just don't let up. On some songs they are more like guitar textures - quite reminiscent of NIN. Other tracks are somewhat more conventional in their guitar assault. This is a nice variation and adds mobility to the music. As for the subject matter - well it's undustrial metal and the album title is Violent New Breed - you figure it out.

Do not buy this album if you liked their early hard rock direction unless your prepared for a shock. Archivists of industrial metal should pick this up, it got missed in the first flush of industrial releases. For the casual hard rock fan there isn't a lot here, there are no lyrics as part of the package, heck you don't even get to find out the names of the two guys that made up S/M at this stage. No communication doesn't exactly inspre the newcomer to connect to the band.

But the riffs do shred. Check out track 6..... almost four stars this one and that's from a guy that normally hates industrial.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Genius Album .......2006-04-01

I snagged this disc as soon as it came out. Let me tell you. I am going to give this five(wish I could give it 500)stars for several reasons. First the Quality of this disc is so far above anthing I have ever heard. I have had my copy for almost 15 years and it is old and scratched to hell. It plays louder and better than any new release out there. Bet my life on it. Second. This is the fourth disc by these guys. Yes Kingpin was a little on the sissie side, but this is a sound that should not have been ignored. I do not like industrial music. I think Sampling sucks. I hate bands like NIN and all those other no count screwheads that cant play so they push the button. But Skold and company had clearly proven themselves by releasing this monster. I Love this disc and try as I may I can not find anything that comes close to it. As far as the snotwad that says Tim Skold sounds like he is singing in a bottle or from a well. Well let me see, there is a such thing as sound effects and I honestly believe that is what he was going for. HEHE What a dork!
This disc is without a doubt the musical lost city of Atlantis. Along with Spread Eagle who why for the life of me did not get a break either. Well Messiah did, but they self destructed in the end.
This is the disc to have, this is where it is at and this is the core of raw and creative purity. A GEM

    5 out of 5 stars Junior ARRIVES!.......2003-09-28

"Tally Ho" is the only cut on this album that I'm not sure whether it made it `out' as a 45, but otherwise this set could have fairly been labeled a "Greatest Hits." It supplied Junior and his men with a roster of sturdy hit singles that spanned better than a year and a half.

"Cleo's Mood" had originally been released on the Harvey Records label in 1962; well before that label was eventually folded into the Motown family. And "Money Jump" from September 1964, was the group's first single release on Motown's subsidiary Soul label after Walker signed with the company. Both of these brought at least some local attention, but it was the gun blast of the next 45 that inaugurated the immediate fame for Junior Walker that lasts to this day.

"Shotgun" backed with "Hot Cha" was issued in January 1965 and is arguably the record that gave Junior Walker instant national (and even international) identity. It is forever associated with him as much as one immediately sees The Temptations when "My Girl" plays, the Supremes, palms-out and declaring, "Stop! In the Name Of Love," the Vandellas "Dancing In the Street," and Levi Stubbs leading the Four Tops dramatically through "Reach Out I'll Be There." "Shotgun" was the signal to increase my personal roster of must-have Motown artists by one. In the 1990s, I can think of two moments in movies where the song was used quite creatively: a key scene late in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X," and even more spectacularly over the opening credits of the Stephen King thriller, "Misery," starring James Caan and Kathy Bates. Like the other songs listed in this paragraph, "Shotgun" doesn't age a bit.

By May of '65, the LP (originally Soul 701) itself along with a 45 of "Boomerang" & "Tune Up" were in record stores. When July rolled around you could buy a single of "Shake & Fingerpop" backed with "Cleo's Back." Come December, Motown re-issued "Cleo's Mood," a fantastically hypnotic and funky instrumental, as an `A'-side single, now on Soul. In March of 1966 - and I'm surprised Motown waited that long - the wonderful Holland-Dozier-Holland party jam "Road Runner" was put out together with "Shoot Your Shot." But we're still not done.

In the summer of 1967 when it was time to put a new Walker 45 out there, and with now three of his LP's to choose from, Motown went back into "Shotgun," to re-issue "Shoot Your Shot" as an A-side along with "Ain't That The Truth." Like I said, it could fairly be re-titled a "Greatest Hits." All of these tracks, while of varying commercial success, kept the legions of fans Walker won overnight with "Shotgun" quite sated. (A lost treasure today is Walker's follow-up album, "Soul Session," originally Soul LP 702, which gathered many of the mainly-instrumentals that had been recorded in the Harvey Records' days.)

I bought the CD of "Shotgun" in February of '93, but then a few years later and for considerably more dollars, I didn't waste a chance at a near-mint mono 1965 vinyl pressing. It's one of the jewels of my collection. Soul music aficionados should certainly have this in their collections in at least one form. "Put on yer wig woman, we go'nout to shake and fingerpop!"

5 out of 5 stars Need more Jr. Walker.......2001-07-15

Motown used to have "Shotgun" and "Roadrunner" - two of Jr. Walker's best albums - available on a single disc. I wish they'd reissue that one. Still, this is one of the best albums of the sixties available at an astonishing price. Grab it! There's not a bad cut on it. Every song is rich and soulful and funky. Great party music, and great for just sitting down and listening to (okay, sitting down while you're listening to this album might be tough, what I mean is, you don't need a party to enjoy it.). Just a perfect record.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with Reviewer Below...........2001-07-12

....Brnn sez, and I quote, SNAP IT UP, unquote...a reprocessing of the original album "Shotgun", in the same sequence? Nineteen sixty five never sounded so good. What's that, you say? Ok, I confess, I could not even imagine how to "Do the Boomerang", though, but I kinda remember The Jerk....

    5 out of 5 stars A Jazzy, Soulful Classic!!.......2001-07-04

First of all, Jr. Walker simply did NOT make bad records! He made that sax SING as well as talk. Sadly, he's grossly underrepresented on CD, so if you see any originals like this back in print, then SNAP IT UP! Now on to this CD:SIMPLY GREAT FUNKY STUFF! We all know about the title track. But "Do The Boomerang," "Tune Up," "Shoot Your Shot" will take your mind to a good ghetto juke joint or house party back in the mid 60s. "Tally Ho" is pretty creative (Check out the fox chase in the beginning and Jr.'s faux-Brit accent at the end). "Ain't That The Truth" has some good funny verbal play between Walker and the All Stars. The Lovely "Hot Cha" is the kind of sweet tune that you wanna hear on a nice drive as the sun goes down on a pretty day (in fact, many a DJ used this tune as their sign-off theme also in the late 60s). Oh yeah, check out Vic Thomas' searing organ on that one. In short, this CD is good for what EVER ails you.

3 out of 5 stars Last hold to the rocker sound.......2007-01-02

I dig all the tracks on this disc, especially the acoustic version of 'nobody's home,' it has balls just like most of the tracks in 'second coming', there's rocker in Tim's voice and it's the real life of sleeze in Hollywood back in the day. There's no comparison to the sound of their first album and those of the ones that followed; if you like striper and all that bubble gum heavy metal, then buy the 1st, but the Tim/Cody sound is real sleeze and it's unfortunate sleeze isn't alive again.

3 out of 5 stars Full of Lead.......2006-01-28

First of all Johnny Angel above has no idea what he is talking about. Zan left the band of his own free will thinking that he could have a better solo career without them. The band was then forced to look for a new singer but found one in their bassist Tim Skold which is not really a stretch since he shared lead vocal duties on the first Cd anyway. This Cd is a set of demos including a cover of The Ramones "53rd and 3rd" from the second coming disc recordings which has nothing to do with the change in style that they took on in the bands 3rd and final effort Violent New Breed which only had Skold and Harry from the original line up on it. Violent New Breed is more industrial driven where as Second Coming and this I Want More EP are pure rock driven tunes with catchy riffs and hooks and a rhythm section that is missing from the other two. There is a lot more focus on the music than the first disc and Violent New Breed. Over all this is a great companion to the Second Coming cd.

      1 out of 5 stars Flop.......2004-09-16

Garbabe, plain and simple. Anybody who gives this album more than two stars couldn't hit sand if they fell off a camel.

Here we have SM firing their singer after a very promising (and hard rock) effort in their first album. Now that album was great. Here we have poser-boy Tim Skold (now in Marilyn Manson, go figure) taking over the vocal spot and pushing the band into the industrial direction. The album tanked, was never accepted by the few fans they managed to keep from the first LP, and shredder Harry Cody and the drummer ended the band soon after(I'd jump off the Titanic if I knew it was sinking too).

Again, the first LP by this band with great singer Zinny J. Zan was incredible and had THEY STUCK WITH THEIR FORMULA they might have had a lot more success, similar to say Skid Row who also released a great debut LP that same year and managed to find pretty good sucess for a hard rock "hair" band that came out in that very late 80's. SM didnt do this tho. Again, if any blame can be placed on this sink-hole, it goes to Tim Skold.

      Avoid at all costs.
