Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors--namely, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti--combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a best-of CD. They gave their first concert in Rome. The event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.

This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles and at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop.

The 22 tracks making up The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La Traviata, to popular songs like "Singin' in the Rain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc; each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc captures the atmosphere of these extraordinary musical events. --Rebecca Agnew

Nice songs from this album.......2007-07-22

This is the first album I have acquired of the Three Tenors, and it was wonderful. The selections were easy to listen to and familiar to me. None of the heavy operatic selections. It is the best. I will buy more albums of them.

Not bad.......2006-03-18

This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.

The best from the three greatest..........2005-08-11

The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone", "Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.

There are no solos on the cd. I think I've read somewhere that they felt there had been enough "three tenors cd's" and if they were to release yet another one it would be one containing what the audience demands, the three of them joining forces and performing together in the songs.
The result, in my opinion is highly recommendable. The three voices blend perfectly together. I have to admit that I have a personal favourite among the tenors and that I would never buy an entire recording featuring only one of the two others, but I recognize their talents and -as stupid as it may sound- since they are performing together I can also appreciate the other two. (I like them too, but in smaller doses....)Some people have commented on their problems with mastering the english language. If anything, I think it just adds to their charm. By the way, who is perfect??

The songs on this cd is a mixture of beautiful songs, heartwrenching songs, toe-tapping songs and powerful songs. It's wonderful to just listen to the beauty in the three voices. It's fun hearing Pavarotti pushing his "high-note-button" in "O sole mio" and Carreras and Domingo copying his stunt. I have no idea what they're singing about in "Manha de Carnaval", but boy does it sound romantic...... And "Dicitencello vuie" brings tears to my eyes (even if I'm still left in the dark when it comes to understanding the meaning of the words...) In "Because" Carreras takes my breath away when singing "because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee...through light and darkness, through all time to be, and pray his love may make our love divine...." (What woman wouldn't like to hear those words..??!?) Their rendition of "You'll never walk alone" should satisfy some of the soccer-fans since it's the anthem of a European football-club and "Nessun Dorma" will probably satisfy the rest of the soccer-fans, being the antheme of the 1998 world soccer championship. In short, there should be something for every taste on this cd.

It's a very "versatile" cd. You can play it almost everywhere. You can sing along to it in the car, you can dance around the house to it while doing your chores, you can put your feet up and unwind after a hectic week. Or you can write an Amazon review while listening to it.... (Feel free to add suggestions of your own here.....)

Just Like the Real Thing!.......2005-07-14

A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio.

Powerful and moving!.......2004-10-21

I got this CD as a gift and it changed my life! I was always a rocker and liked classical music, but never was much into this genre of music. This album changed all of that. Since getting the three tenors I've found a whole new world out there. Thank you guys!

If you think you've heard it all, you're wrong. The three big guys are indeed back, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a rabidly enthusiastic crowd to welcome them. They sing many favorites-- "Granada," "Because," "Nessun dorma"--and there are a pair of medleys: one devoted to love songs, and one called "Medley of the World," which ends with a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that might just bring tears to your eyes. If the truth be known, the three tenors have put on 8 years since we first heard them together, and a fair amount of bloom is off their rose-like voices--with Domingo's ardency sounding a bit hard-edged, Carreras's tone even more spread than before, and some of Pavarotti's gold tarnished and his breath shorter. Suffice it to say that older CDs by these three formerly-really-great tenors are worth their weight in gold, compared to the bronze you'll find here. But the classy James Levine at the helm keeps the "event" going with passion, and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement. --Robert Levine

Standing Ovation !!!.......2001-09-24

Once again, the Tenors electrified the world. It was estimated that over 1.6 billion viewers saw this extraordinary display of musical genius.
The Pavarotti rendition of "Nessun Dorma" was breathtaking as he "hit" his famous high C with VINCERO!!!
With the exception of "Nessun Dorma & Caruso", I felt that it
was Domingo who carried the show. His voice style changes so dramatically to fit the mood and melody of each song.
Carreras, I felt, was lacking the "oomph" in his solos on this tour. However, no one can top Carreras when a line needs to be delivered that has "deep-gut" emotional feelings, almost mad sounding, i.e. the song "Because" -- listen when he sings "his love makes mangle of devile...", you'll understand what I mean.
Combine the Three together and you have pure brilliance. Listen to the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" is almost patriotic like.
"O' Sole Mio" and the show stopper "La Donna Mobile" left the people standing and cheering.
The Paris setting was spectacular. James Levine was his normal go lucky conductor self as he makes the viewing audience and the orchestra feel at ease with his upbeat facial expressions.
An awesome addition to your collection. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see why the world has labled them "The Three Tenors." BRAVO

A mistake that we need to remember.......2001-09-10

I was blessed to have a chance to be in Paris at that time, and really one of the reasons I went to the City of Romance was because I was so eager to go to the Three Tenors Concert. I managed to get a very good seat at the front in order to really experience and enjoy the concert that I had been dreaming to go all my life, because I am so madly in love with classical and opera music. Also I am a great fan for all of these three tenors, particularly Placido Domingo.

Having watched the Three Tenors Concert in Los Angeles, which was so great and inspiring, I was hoping this one can turn out to be greater and more successful. However it really failed my expectation and turned me into disappointment. Several mistakes were made which surely caused this concert to be a failure.

First, the choice of the conductor. James Levine was really the wrong choice for the position which is actually the heart of such an important event. His style of conduct and taste of music was proven unsuitable. It did not make you feel excited, but at sometimes made you feel uneasy and uncomfortable.

Second, something seemed to be limiting Domingo's ability and talent to be fully expressed. In fact he appeared to be much older and less energetic. The usual powerfulness and beauty of his voice really disappeared somewhere that can be hardly known.
As for Pavarotti we can only give him an average mark for his performance.

Third, lack of common sense. Even three years old child knows Granada has to be and is best to be sung by Domingo, just like Nessun Dorma has to be by Pavarotti, but I just can't understand why the organiser or the music directors did not realize this? Were they too commercially motivated or too careless???

Jose was the best and played an instrumental role to keep this concert going, my admiration towards him grow more after this event. Anyway huamns do make mitakes including the famous and popular ones. Although this concert was not their greatest my support for them will still remain.

I Wish I Was There.......2000-12-11

I found this is one of my favorite of all "The Three Tenors" recordings. I would have loved to have been present one the night of this concert. I want to say all of the tenors do a superb job. I cannot understand why people put down Carreras because he proves here how much he appreciates his gift. Domingo is almost flawless. I have been a fan of Pavarotti since I 1980 (when I was just 12). Here is my personal favorite, Caruso.

Not the best tenors album........2000-05-03

First of all, the change of the conductor. We were used to the thundering conducting of Mehta. Then, Pavarotti is not the same man that he was in '94 and in '90. His range fell a lot. Then, he dared to sing a song that is traditionally sang by Domingo (Granada) It lacks opera arias. Not a good purchase. Buy the first or the second albums.

Peggy Lee's Christmas Carousel Means Christmas.......2006-01-18

Growing up my brother, myself, and my Dad all loved this Christmas album. It meant that the Holiday Season was upon us and always made us smile (and we aren't the type of folks that usually run around being happy all the time ).

Anyway, the other Peggy Lee Christmas album that is currently available is not Christmas Carousel (couple of tracks, etc. are different). While I managed years ago to snag a copy for myself I would love to obtain this album for my brother and father on CD.

For some unkown reson to me anyway my wife, sister-in-law, and even Mom don't like this albmum as much as we do. Never could figure this out but the guys always find a way to have Peggy Lee in the Christmas music mix when we get together for the Holidays.

i'm guessing there are a lot of people out there that remember and miss this album from their childhood Christmases! i would love to have a copy of it on CD, but haven't been able to find one, so it's on my amazon wishlist!

Great compilation.......2007-02-07

I though I owned all the Halloween music to be found. But this one has some new ones and old ones done differently. I highly recommend it.

Good memories spoilt.......2006-12-27

The title of the CD is "Scary" but don't be fooled. The only thing frightening is that someone might be suckered by the reputation of the conductor and some fond childhood memories into spending good money for this crud.

While there are a couple of admirable tributes to classic horror theme songs, the cheesy vocals on Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Monster Mash, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Beware of the Blob and Thriller relegate this disc to the trash bin.

Instead of this, I'd recommend Nosferatu (James Bernard), Chiller (Cincinnati Pops), Fantastic Journey (Cincinnati Pops, also - more SciFi than horror, though) and Classics From the Crypt (RCA Victor). All available here.

All I can say is wow- kitschy and delightful in a way. Though the "Thriller" is disturbing. But how can you deny the "Killer Tomatoes"? I mean, how can you??

It was a little short in length, but overall I really enjoyed listening to this CD.

Perfect for a Christmas Train Garden.......2002-12-07

Christmas 2001 my dad and I visited a Santa garden in the local mall and they had a machine playing short clips of Christmas Kaliope music. For the first time in years I saw my 70 year old father return to boyhood in his excitement to hear such an arrangement. Hence my search for some Wurlitzer music began. I was delighted to find this and it's companion Volume 2 CD.

The CDs are a true wonder. I waited until the Sunday night before Christmas to give him the albums - as a gift while we set up the train garden for the many new grandchildren in the family. This music put us in the holiday spirit and kept the adults entertained like kids as we spent all night fixing up the trains, toys and little things for Santa.

Best of all came Christmas Day when we invited the children to explore the train garden. To my 2 year old nephew, the garden was much more entertaining than even Santa! The only trouble we had was getting the kids to leave the garden to eat Christmas dinner.

Volume 2 has more songs (28), but Volume 1 has most of the popular tunes. You also don't need a fancy stereo system to get the best sound from these CDs. Wurlitzers have beautiful music but no stereophonic qualities. The [new]boom player ended up playing these tunes better than the $[more expensive] surround sound stereo system. Just stick your boom player in a corner, pop in a CD, set to continuous and random and you'll have a great magical background to your train garden, Christmas Tree room, or Santa's village.

Christmas Carousel music is really nice........2000-10-26

This CD gives you a chance to listen to the Christmas Carousel music during the Holiday Season, especially when amusement parks are closed. Very nicely arranged by Tom Meijer. The music also gives you a feeling of nostalgia. The Wurlitzer 146A is a nice band organ that still bring in the crowd to the carousel. No carousel is complete without a Wurlitzer Band Organ.

I highly recommend this CD.
